Tragically it's super hood!! Come on down if you wanna have a good ole RATCHET time in Clay co! You can smoke inside, pool tables, a stage for open mic nights and can get a good headache in the morning after a night of drinking with their cheap drinks (their goose IS NOT goose!! **TRUST ME!**). Not to knock the place, but its "AIGHT" AT BEST not the worse but FAR FROM the best! I actually used to work there so take my rating seriously...
Review Source:The Gate... what can I say? The name alone says "hood" to me. I am a 20 something African American female and I heard hella horror stories about The Gate so my first time going was with my female roommate and a guy friend just in case we needed back up. To our surprise we had a good time. The club is small, dark and raggedy but the d.j. and the guests are always turnt up. It was a cover charge (for what I don't know) but we came with the performers so we got in free. The crowd is whack, hoody locals that don't dress like they are going to the club but we danced the whole night. So if you're looking for a nice time on the Southside definitely check out The Gate.
Review Source:The first time I went to The Gate I hated it! It was still called J-Paul's back then and the people there were umm... I don't know how to put it nicely. I went with a bunch of my guy friends who live in the area, so I didn't really know what to expect at first... The positives were the music (hip-hop, my fave :)) and the drinks were reasonably priced. They even charged us $10 for girls, $20 for guys to get in which is a total rip off for that place!!! Thank God parking was free.
The place is kind of a dump, the smell of smoke is unbearable (the low ceilings don't help), and the girls were staring at me like "What are you doing here?!?" since I was like the only white person... needless to say I never thought I would go back.
But I did.... and somehow the second time wasn't as bad. Young LA (the rapper) was there, and i love his song "Ain't I", so that was pretty cool. The performace was good, kinda raw, and the music was on point all night! The crowd was still meh... but I guess they put on their "nicer" outfits for Young LA. If this place didn't play good music it would get 1 star from me. But since I love some good music I'm giving it 2.
