The one thing that always makes me double-think coming here: the cover charge.
This place is basically a restaurant. I don't know about you, but the last time I went to Shakey's I wasn't charged at the door to get in.
This seems to be a go-to spot for fights/big playoff games.
They try desperately to make this place turn into a club, but the dance floor is tiny and it's just all kinds of wrong.
Those wings though? The only reason I gave this place another star. They scratched out buffalo and wrote in pterodactyl for good reason. Those chickens were on roids.
I got here with a party of 7 and the gratuity (tip, for the small vocab.-type) was a rip-off, for sure. Our waitress did take her sweet time bringing me water and seemed to forget about my refill on just water time and time again.
Will I be back? Sure. But with 90% of other places in the world NOT charging me to eat, I'll have to re-think coming here.
Good Micheladas. One of my brother's recommended this place and said they serve some good Micheladas so I wanted to try them out. It was a good experience and the Micheladas didn't fail or disappoint. The vibe was mellow and definitely wasn't rowdy. So, today we returned and had another one. But just one this time and watched a CONCACAF soccer game. I liked the service and they show sports games which is a plus. Great job George!
Review Source:Where to begin...
I like to come here ONLY when I don't feel like driving too far to have a beer or 3. Here is the breakdown:
Wednesday nights is karaoke night w/ a DJ. It doesn't get crowded but it's still fun when you go with a group of people that like to have a good time, or I'm sure you'll be entertain by the Karaoke singers. (No cover charge)
Fridays are the best nights in my opinion. You have a younger crowd. Sometimes George's has a live band. I've been there when a band called "Primo Rock" played... they were AWESOME! and the singer was HOT! Anyway, back to my review. Good music, good prices on beer and the people, well they can be a little ghetto, which I really don't mind as long as they don't mess with me. (Cover charge after 9pm $5 for the ladies, $10 for the guys.. and YES, be prepared to pay a cover charge even if you are just there to have dinner)
Saturdays is an older crowd. Only DJ (from what I can remember). There is a cover charge, can't remember the amounts. Also, be prepared to pay cover charge if you are just there for dinner. I know, I know, bull right? That's what I said the first time I was there for dinner. BTW, the food is... "meh". I've experienced better.
One thing to be cautious about: An old friend of mine and I came here for some drinks. That night she paid with her ATM card. When she was paying, she paid the correct amount of the bill, but a couple of days later she noticed that they had charged her account triple the amount they were supposed to. Luckily she still had the receipt and called her bank ASAP. They refunded her account the difference without any problems.
A couple of weeks later I ended up going with my brothers and the same thing happened to me. What was supposed to be a charge for less than $15 turned into a charge of $90 something. WTH!? Because of what had happened to my friend, I kept my receipt and reported it to my bank. Since then, every time I come here or if I know that a friend will be paying with a ATM/Credit Card I make sure I let them know.
Ever since my experience I tend to take cash, if I don't, I prefer using their ATM machine that charges me $2.50 for the transaction, than getting screwed for triple the amount of my bill.
Went for the 1st time on a Sunday night. Â The crowd wasn't as "hood" as I expected, based on reviews. Â Bar tenders were great! Drinks not too pricey, Music was AWESOME. My girlfriends and I danced all night. Â Def plan on returning. Â Didn't eat. no cover charge, not too crowded. AC on the dance floor was great! Bathrooms were clean. It's a bar people what do you want??!!.
Review Source:For starters if u want to have a successful business whoa lots have to change, at least with the right people in it.. Guess pertains to image ur going with , and reputation u want. This place is just ghetto!! all i can say.. its funny the people working in suits like its some upscale lounge or bar something when its far from it. IT has potential if they had a stricter dresscode enforced. The type of people who go there thug looking cholo dudes and some of the girls , i was like wow okay . lol. Then all these people in this small place and they have fireplace on like seriously its already freaken hot with body heat , told owner he said oh wouldnt maKE A DIFFerence, really dude. Anyways point is i only went here for a relatives birthday and made most had fun with people i was with. To decide to go on my own , no i wouldn go def would not recommend this place, maybe if they clean their image change up things there is potential.
Review Source:Went to Wednesday Karaoke and it was disappointing. The place has A LOT of potential for a really good Karaoke Night, but the waitress that served us was acting bitchy. The DJ was ignoring the sign up list. The regulars were hogging the mic but other than that there $20 George's Super Platter was amazing! And can't beat $2 Coronas!
Review Source:This place Blows hood rats, security that thinks there crazy, and the owner walks around like he is a gift or something and he's just half of a man, WTF! Will never go back Horrable!!!! Food was cold too, and I suggest you use cash for they tryed to over charge me. I did bring it to there attention and they did take care of it but how many people do they do this to? Just not right!
Review Source:what can i say about this spot. honestly this place is hilarious. i cant believe we paid $5 to get into this place but it was for a friends bday .id rather use those 5 dollars for Mai Tai's, this place is ridicoulous small, the bathroom is the retarded small as well, i had a good time either way but only cuz of the people i was with. the ambience, the people, the drinks, all lack something special, and they should just give the security, windbreakers instead of them weraing blazers, trying to class this spot up, really stop frontin' lol.
Review Source:I was convinced to hit the place called George's Bar in Downey aka The Hot Spot for all you true locals.
It was a Sunday night and I was the D.D. for the night, the place looks better then before and the Dj is getting better. The crowd was probably like 30 people sort of a back yard bbq feeling.
Im sure this place gets packed on the weekends but this night it was just the local die hards that didnt want to stay home. This place had a few good looking females hanging out but they were acting like their shit dont stink.
All in all it was a chill night and will come back on a busy night and possibly a sunday nfl game day.
So this is my first review lol....
Ok so a friend told me about this spot and met her up there...Its hidden from the street so thats why i never noticed it before but its in the same parking lot as KFC and in the back. The outside looked decent ...it was nice inside good size place..clean  alot of seating and they have booths ... THe bar is nice size they have tvs .. and a very small dance floor ..they had a special going on with beers i was ordering corona i forgot what the price was but when I went back the second time price had went up and that they werent having that special no more! OH and on top of that they charge taxes on their drinks so your paying like 6.32, 5.44, etc. So its annoying with all the change. I do like there Big beer glasses though :)
They serve food .....ughh stick with the finger food because everything else is a waste of your money. I ordered fish tacos with rice the fish tacos were alright and the rice was cold like they microwaved my food. I also tried there camarones aguas chiles(shrimp cooked in lemon juice and chile)  cuz i love eating those and it had been awhile...I already had a bad feeling about it but i ordered it anyway...UGH WTF! thats what my first thought was...it looked nothing close to how ive had them at restaurants but i tried them anyway  nasty lol and even my stomach started to hurt and its rare when my stomach hurts so i knew i had to stop eating them...So i told the waitress i wanted a refund.. because that plate was like 12-14 bucks... she said she had to go ask she was a very sweet girl so she went and then another girl came and she got rude with me and said "whats wrong with it"  "thats how we make them" and i let her know i do not like them the shrimps dont taste fresh that my stomache was hurting she said i already ate a few of them and she couldnt refund me im thinking oh hell noo..really ? So after awhile of asking for my money back finally i did and waitress apologized for her i told her no need to  ... the girl she sent to me acted like she was the one who made the food! sheesh...I shouldve brought up how shitty my other plate was too but i didnt...One of the bartenders was kinda rude as well....the other two were nice that i met. The owner is coo seems like a nice guy..bouncer was coo...The crowd is not diverse. One of the times i went was on a Thursday i guess they have dj and they were charging $10! and it was only like around 8pm...I walked in it was kinda dead stayed and had a few drinks and left i saw more ppl comming in when we left but we wanted to leave beers too expensive and we were bored....Overall its a chill spot I would go back just wont order the food !!
One of our colleagues thought this was a good place to have our company Christmas party... HUGE mistake. The waitress was ghetto fabulous and had the worst attitude ever. I asked what she had on tap and she pointed to the bar. We took a little long in deciding what to order so in the middle of our order she says "Think about it and I'll come back when your ready." If that wasn't enough, when we were ready we called her over, but she was on her cell phone texting some other looser I'm sure and told us to wait. WTF?!... I swear I thought I was getting punked. I was looking out for Ashton to come out of the kitchen or somthing. The owner, George, is not much better either. He looks like he should be loading boxes in a warehouse downtown LA or something. We paid for our drinks and under TIP I wrote: Take a customer service class!
Never written a review in my life, but I had to get this off my chest. Phew.
Oh hell no!!! This place is last case scenario type of joint. Bad Bad Bad!! The guys in this place... ugh... low quality. the booze shit quality. The bartenders are wicked beings from an extraterrestrial planet. It was not fun, It was in fact bad and they have the audacity to charge me to get in? They are lucky i showed up in the first place. god damnit shit whore!
Review Source:I've been here several times for various occasions many times because my friend's friend George owns the bar. It's a small location and I'be had fun times here until recently. I was never treated more horribly than the final NBA game I attended last month.
I'm a Celtics fan and understandably am the minority in most bars in LA but I've never felt the disrespect I felt at this bar. George's ghetto brother/bouncer completely treated me like a 2nd class citizen and told me I had to remove my jersey from the bar and made me go to my car and put it away. Then he removed all the extra chairs I had saved for my friends saying I had too many. And I had been the first to arrive at the bar to reserve our spot.
This was beyond humiliating. I have no need to go back anytime soon, if ever, even though once my friend showed up she told the owner and they all apologized. It shouldn't of happened to this degree. For this reason alone my review of this once OK bar goes from 3 stars to 1 star in my books. It went from a fun hang out location to a ghetto bar full of cholo's and low lives now. Â I don't recommend it for a low key location.
This place is A-ok I say! Â I have visited this restaurant-bar in different occations, it is a small place but with plenty of potential. Â
During the NFL or NBA season they have raffles for sports items. Â I was actually here on a Monday for, you know- Monday night football and I was the lucky winner of the grand prize which was an Eagles football jersey! Â Yay! Â All the guys were hating on me bcuz they thought I did not care for an OG jersey (...can't say that I was or wasn't, the Eagles is not my team.)
Moving on.. on Friday's it is not exactly a restaurant it is more like a bar/club, and I say club, because they do have that $10 cover... but hey I don't care much for the cover if it guarantee's the good music, and in this case they do as they have a live band and a DJ! Â So if you don't care about the music, then you should drive somewhere else and let the ppl that don't mind it go in and even have more space on the dance floor, lol (the dance floor so small, and it does get pretty hot in there). Â This place can be as casual and as treandy as you want it to be.
Other pro's: the kitchen is open until like 11pm, even on Fridays on the other weekdays I would imagine till later. Â Another good thing about this place is that it has a pool table, and plenty of tables to sit, large bar area too.
The crowd is mostly hispanics and I can say locals, so with that have said it is only ghetto if you surround yourself with ghetto, so if you want to avoid ghetto, check your car look who is sitting next to you and then determine whether you should really be coming to this place. Â Hehe.
I will visit this place again and order my pepinos con chile y limon.
Where do I start? This place is so ghetto they charge you $10 just to get in! The waitresses will take up to 30 mins to bring  2 beers after you order no joke! The crowd is more of a gangster crowd with old cholas trying to pick up on young guys. Security at the door is a joke as well, they will actually try and intimidate you as you walk in haha! Not worth your time.
Review Source:*in my Eric Cartman voice* In the ghettooooooo... in the ghettooooooooooooo!
That's exactly what I thought about this place. The locale of this restaurant/bar is not in a horrible place. It's the clientele that comes here that brings the place down a bit. And you're probably wondering why I was here. Well, my buddy decided to have his birthday celebration here and since we wanted to celebrate with him, we ended up here.
First things first... $10 cover because they were showing the UFC match. It does not matter if you don't want to watch it, you are forced to pay. And as others have stated, if you are already inside and are eating/drinking, they will come up to you and tell you to pay $10. WTF?! Seriously! A posted sign on the door that says something about the cover would be helpful. This is definitely the place to go if you want to catch the latest fight or UFC match. It appears that they show all of them.
Second, hubby and I were starving so we ordered the Burrito Horniado. No, that is not a horny burrito, it is a burrito that is thrown into the oven (horno, in Spanish). Holy crap this thing was good! Very spicy, very cheesy and it had chunks full of chicken. Definitely worth the $8 because it was also huge.
Now if I understand that there's a cover and their food was good, why the 2 star? Well, the staff is not at all kind. The bartenders, and I use the term loosely, are bitchy. Aren't bartenders supposed to be nice to the customers to get higher tips? There was one in particular with a "cara de fuchi" that was just on a rampage.
So, unless there's another shindig here, or I want to watch a fight, I won't be patronizing this place.
I can't believe this bar charges $10 to get in! I don't know if its the same for guys or it's more but they charge women $10. Anyway, moving on the crowd is mostly Hispanic older crowd probably 25+. I really didn'y see that many attractive people . The dance floor is really small. It gets really hot in there. In the beginning  of the night they had a band, but later the dj came who played hip hop mostly all night. So the best thing about this place is the music. That's it.
Review Source:I recently moved to Downey so I was interested in finding cool restaurants/bars in the area. I heard about George's and went on a Saturday evening to check it out.
I walked in and it's really a bar that happens to serve food. 30 minutes into our meal, we were informed that they were going to be showing a "big" pay-per-view fight that night and that we had to pay $15 each to stay. WHAT??? You're going to charge me AFTER I've started eating? I don't think so. Needless to say, we ate quickly and left even more quickly.
This weekend, we decided to give it another shot. Afterall, they had decent bar food and a full bar. My boyfriend got frisked at the door (at 6pm) and the manager said they were showing another "big" fight that night and we'd have to pay $15 to stay. Heck no!
We left and guess what...I'm not going back.
I guess if you're into the "big" fights that seem to happen every weekend, then this is the place for you.
Sat night got nothing to do, decide to go to what my friend describes as an "upscale bar/ lounge".
Well we end up at George's from the outside it looks like an office building. Parked cars either have Laker or Dodger stickers on their windows. So what the hell after paying 10 bucks to get frisked i walk in and its a not so large restaurant / mini club with a small dance floor with mostly a hispanic/ latino crowd. So what do I do? I feel somewhat out of place but I always tend mix in and try to make friends and chat.
Not bad being it looks like a restaurant / sports bar / miniclub/ bar. The crowd is relaxed I did notice a hand-full of hood-rats and some thugs.
I must have some reputation or I must stick out like a sore thumb because I always get some kind of attention from the manager. He shook my hand welcomed me there and asked how I was doing and if I needed anything.
I would say the place itself is not bad, the service was very good, the music I liked - mix of old school, rock, house, reggaton, and spanish rock, however the crowd I am not too sure of, when we all went up to dance, there were people stealing our food - pretty ghetto to be stealing peoples food, and the food was not bad at all - nice sized sampler platter.
Not so upscale in my opinion, but definitely a fun place to go.
drunk yelp--
last night, i witnessed an episode of novelas. Â Don't know? Â Google that shit. Â My friend Juan, Flora, and I decided to catch up over drinks at the local karaoke joint in Downey....
All of a sudden, it was a effin episode of novelas. Â In walks juan's ex....she redefines hood rat..you know, the dark lip liner with the glossy lipstick...yup, that ghetto...
well, what do you do when the ex appears? Â You latch on to the nearest pussy and call her the gf...and Flora was the victim. Â Well....can you blame a lion for eating a gazelle? Â no....can you blame a hood rat ex gf from wanting to throw down? Â nah.
So the hood rat decides to create a stir. Â I'm the biggest fan of spectator sports. Â I sat back....drank my fake vodka (they don't have a liqour license here) and watched the train wreck.
Will I come back to Georges? Â You know...when i'm in the mood for some hood rat...yeah, now I know where to go....but quite honestly, I'm the food slut..but not a slut.
