Been here so many times in the past couple years here at ucr. They do have really good food! But its also really greasy... only the junk food is good. My friend wanted to order something not greasy, (Avocado Melt) but came out kind of gross.

But they have a nice staff. They always give me a smile when I walk in and they have free delivery on orders over $10. Which is awesome if you live in UCR housing and you feel lazy to go out. :)

Pretty good prices on beer, as well as a surprisingly good selection.  Food is ok, and gets better after a couple pitchers ;)

This is the ONLY bar near campus, but that shouldn't detract from any endorsements.  The patios is may favorite spot, as the inside can be loud and crowded.

A nice, student-friendly place to drink and grub. They also do free delivery!

Their food is mostly okay. I love getting their pizzas and calzones. There are many great varieties of pizzas, and they all have a nice, crispy crust. I recommend the blazing chicken pizza ($20 - Large). I like their calzones ($6.25) because they're enormous and you can fill them up with all sorts of pizza toppings (75 cents each), such as chorizo and artichoke hearts.

I would like to give a special thank you to Getaway Cafe on behalf of The Highlander newspaper for being open and delivering to campus when we're working late past midnight! Also, thanks for the ensuing food comas...

Super laid back sports bar type of place. Great beers on tap, friendly service, and you're bound to see someone you know there if you go to UCR.

The (3) fish tacos are my favorite here- I love that chipotle sauce on top and I always ask for extra limes ;) The pizzas are good and the kabob plate was pretty tasty (I loved the grilled whole tomato).

It's a great place to watch a game, kickback, or just meet up with for a quick bite before class. This place is definitely worth a try!

So you're stressed, right? And you don't have class until 7 pm, and are thinking about ditching because you're just so tired of doing nothing but studying? Here's a suggestion, instead of going to Starbucks and getting a cup of coffee, come on over and get yourself a nice pint of Stella Artois. Then go back to class, relaxed of course, and make that the best class you've ever had. Cheers!

Best place to eat near the UC Riverside campus.. Good food and great selection of craft brews.

Enjoyed the Caesar salad--great dressing and crunchy lettuce. My brother had the Hawaiian chicken sandwich and really enjoyed it. Quick service, good prices.

We ordered 2 pizzas mushroom and pepperoni,  spinach dip, buffalo wings,  and jalapeños.  The pizza is great! Definitely get that. Wings were really good. Jalapeños could have been better about a 3/5. Spinach dip was not good at all. However overall, we liked this place, will order from here again!

Decent food but I really like their free delivery! You do have to order $10 worth of food for them to deliver but when you're stuck at work and haven't ate lunch, the Getaway Club (Turkey, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato on Sourdough) hits the spot. Also their french fries are actually pretty good. If you want a decent burger, sandwich or calzone, Getaway has a good location and cheap prices.

This place is definitely a college student's type of place.  A place to go for a beer and some decent tasting, unhealthy food with friends.  The atmosphere is great, but this review is mostly about the food, right?

We ordered the Stuffed Jalapenos as an appetizer which were delivered to our table frozen.  When we told the waiter about it, he gladly offered to remake us an order, informed us that they prepare them the day before and freeze them, and apologized for the incident.  When they came back out, they were cooked to perfection, and we were pleased.  These are HUGE peppers, and about as tasty as stuffed jalapenos can get.

I ordered the Pizza Burger.  It was exactly what you'd think of; a burger with pizza sauce and pepperoni. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't AMAZING.

My wife ordered the Roast Beef Sandwich. Again, not bad, but nothing to write home about.

Great place to go celebrate with classmates after a midterm or final. Their beers here are fairly priced and decent.

They also have a wide selection of foods that don't disappoint.

This is the first and last time I order food from this place. It was nasty! The hamburger meat is simply the worst quality .. Not good at all. The jalapeño poppers are pretty nasty too... The cheese inside is tasteless. Jack in the box has better tasting jalapeño poppers. The ground beef taco is gross. The meat simply didn't taste right. Macho nachos were simply ok but I didn't care for them at all. We ended up throwing away all the food ... This food was not good. Never again . Everything we ordered had a funky taste.

Yup! I must admit that I like it! Good pub atmosphere - sports games, drinks a-plenty, and bar food. Amazingly, I'm surprised by how good the Calzone is for the price. For under $7, it's a huge wrapped pizza! What's good was the marinara sauce that came with it. The burgers were decent; spicy tuna melt sandwiches tasted good.

The place also has a weird entrance to it which made it seem odd to find such a pub in the middle of what looks to be an apartment complex. There's plenty of seating indoors and outdoors.

The beer selection here is kinda boring. Some local stuff, some standard stuff, nothing too wet and wild.

Got a pastrami sandwich and some "Monster Fries". The saucy fries platter was awesome, but the pastrami was funky dirty. I knew I shouldn't have gotten it. But their enormous menu disoriented me. I ABSOLUTELY DETEST LARGE MENUS!!! Just make a few things and be really good at it!! They have a salmon burger, meatball sandwiches, burritos and french dips...it's like they're little food hoarders, and their storage is a menu.

They have an internet  jukebox here also, which is cool, because that means I get to listen to Burzum while I drink, and nobody can stop me.

Memories... I frequented this place during my UCR days of yore (1998-2002).

It's always a good place to relax, have a pitcher of beer, and eat some greasy food that only young college kids like to enjoy on a daily basis. I'm certain it's why many gain weight and skip class.

I'm not one to judge. I gained weight frequenting this spot in between classes. And whenever I made the unwise decision to drink beer, I would find myself having to get up to go to the restroom every 10 minutes during class because I "broke the seal".

I have a friend who goes to UCR and I'm super jealous they have a place like this! It's open late too on weekdays! I would be a big fan of beer and homework if I lived closer.

The food is also really good!

Looooove this place. Super casual atmosphere, totally decent prices, and the food is CRAZY CRAZY good!!! It's totally above average- you know, a little more creative than your standard place for beer and pizza, etc.
I live close by and when I realized they deliver, late-night, my life was changed. Now I can eat something besides pizza if I want when I'm totally inebriated and starving at home. But their  pizza is way good too. Gotta try the carne asada fries! YOU JUST GOTTA!

If I was a UCR student I would be here DAILY. This place is awesome! I love the sports bar atmosphere. Everything is priced great for the area and the food/drinks served.  I LOVE the avocado melt, and the blazin chicken pizza is AMAZING with an ice cold beer :)

Can't wait to go back next time I'm in the area.

Great prices on delicious food and beer.  Has a college pizza parlor/pub vibe.  Great place to catch Thursday night football. Across the street to UCR.  They deliver free! The front door is confusing to find.

Order the pizza--their crust is to die for (well, and die of because it tastes like a mound of buttery bliss).

One of the guys who runs this place is so nice, and recognize me and my boyfriend whenever we come in the door. He looks at us and goes "Totally Veggie" ? (It's the our favorite pizza on the menu)

Riverside (and So Cal in general) has a terrible reputation with pizza (nothing like the East Coast), but the Getaway manages to make a pretty tasty pie for a reasonable price (around 10 dollars). They also serve beer, and beer with pizza is a great combination.

This is a great place.  It's like a pub with a surprisingly nice menu, and definitely much classier than a bar or dive.  Since it's right on the edge of UCR, the place caters to middle-class college students, rather than to your typical barflies and drunks you'd expect to find in other pubs.

Their menu mainly consists of your usual college cafe entrees.  All sorts of pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, that sort of thing.  I've had multiple dishes there, each one I would rate between "decent" to "great" in regards to taste. I would personally recommend the Pastrami Burger.  I'd have to say that's my favorite dish here.  And of course, there's a lot of beers to be enjoyed.

The service is friendly and prompt, and the facilities are kept clean enough.  Nice big TVs, all sorts of interesting decor, digital jukebox, and an outdoor patio that is pleasant on warm Riverside nights. There's also a small game room, which comes in quite handy when waiting for your food. And if you're in the middle of a game of pool or darts, they bring your food to you and you can choose to eat right there in the game room (they have counters and stools in there as well so you can eat comfortably).

My only gripe is the price.  Their sandwiches and burgers are a bit on the high side, no free refills.  But other than that, it's what you'd expect to pay in a place like this.

Overall, I greatly enjoy hanging out here.  I've read some reviews below that complain about not being waited on hand and foot.  But remember, this place is just a simple pub/eatery designed for college kids who need to unwind.  So if you're looking for a place to go to just relax, eat a nice burger, watch the big game, and shoot some pool, Getaway Cafe might be right up your alley.

As I began to fall in love with beer during my 4th year in UC Riverside, I came across Getaway Cafe, a pub-like place for college students to hang and drink. It's just so awesome to find a place close to campus at night because I easily can chill with friends, watch a basketball game, and get a pitcher of Hangar 24's Orange Wheat all at the same time.

Because of the decent price and large variety of beer and food, Getaway Cafe is a great, late-night hang out place for college students. Enough said.

Been here so many times this review is way overdue.
Always get a pitcher of the Lev on tap by Stone to compliment their pretty dank pizza.

Had a great burger here with fries once but the pizza is the real stuff. Also.. bomb cobb salad here too! I guess everything just tastes better when you're sharing beer with your friends.

And yeah it goes without saying that if you're a 21+ student at UCR you should go here sometime!

I went to this place with some friends of mine. The setting was pretty simple and the facilities were quite dingy. There wasn't really "service" because it's not that kind of restaurant; you order at the front and choose your seat. This was the only interaction I had with any employees and I had no problem with the man I spoke with but he wasn't super friendly. But onto the food. I ordered the Chicken Club. The chicken was kind of dry but I guess it was okay. But for $7.95 it should have been great! I heard they have good pizza, but from a look at the menu, it was pretty expensive. I don't know why this place has so many good reviews here, maybe I ordered a bad item, but from my experience it was very mediocre and not worth the money. So my ratings are:
    Quality Of Food: 3/5
    Service/ Friendliness: 2.5/5
    Cleanliness/ Atmosphere: 2.5/5
    Price: 2/5

Okay, I can honestly say I wouldn't have walked in here if it wasn't for my roomie. Two years into being at UCR and I always walked past this place walking to and from campus but it always looked kinda sketchy to me for some reason. The painted words on the outside never seemed to change and I never realized where the entrance was.

After trying it... I don't know how I feel about it. It's definitely a college kid spot though, cheap beer during happy hour and simple bar type food. I ordered the chicken tenders and fries with ranch. The portion seemed kinda lame and I had to pay extra for another side of ranch. It could possibly just be a bad first experience. I would probably go back if a friend wanted to go, but I personally wouldn't just stop there to eat.

Overall, decent food and cheap beer with pool tables and all for college kids.

The Getaway is UCR classic.  The beer selection is surprisingly good, and the food also surprisingly good for such a divey place.

I came here often after tests and other events on campus for a drink.  Pitchers of beer are reasonably priced.  I sometimes feel like the kegs are old or they are not cleaning the lines though.

The food is pretty good for what it is, but still not really that great.  I generally stuck to the sandwiches and calzones.  The burgers aren't my favorite, but other people seem to like them.

When they get crowded it can take a really long time to get food.

It's not bad at all, and that combined with nostalgia is what will bring me back.

I really, really want to give Getaway a better review. They were the most amazing place when I was in college. However, service and quality has become greatly sacrificed since that time.  When Getaway is busy, it seems as though they do not have enough staff to man the location.

I ordered the potato taquitos and they were awful. They had no flavor and were over cooked.

They have an amazing selection of beer and it is a fun place to hang out with friends. However, if you are looking for food when they are busy then this isn't the place for you.

This place is awesome. Very publike and you can't call yourself a UCR student without visiting this place once. I've been here every year as a freshman and its always been great with friends.

They also have a wide enough selection of beers, including Stone Brewery, which made me love them immediately.

This is mostly bias, but its a UCR destination for students.

Getaway is perfect for UC Riverside. Its a chill place to get a few drinks. Getaway doesn't try to be the hot hang out place in Riverside (if you want to go to a business that tries to hard, go to Mediterranean Cafe) and doesn't pretend to be something its not. Its a fun chill out place on Campus. Lucky me, I live in crappy Bannockburn so I am just a few steps away from here.

Getaway offers a satisfying selection of Beers on Tap and the food options is better what you get at most other bars.

If you are a student at UCR, you will or have been here at least once. It's not a place you show off to your out of town friends, but a place just to chill, drink a few beers, and play a round of pool or watch a game.

    Could you ask more?

Aw Yeah GETAWAY!!!! For the locals it's pronounced "Ghetto-way Cafe". I don't know where to beginning. You stole my heart, you had me at hello. Before I start my review, I would like to address a few of the negative reviews. Now I understand 3 star reviews, this place is not the best for everyone, but anything lower.. I don't know what you are smoking. Take that stick out of your A$S and take your "I've had better" attitude and just leave. We don't need your kind at Getaway anyway. If you don't drink beer, what-the-f**k are you doing here? You don't see me going to a Vegan restaurant and giving it 1 star, because there's no meat. If you are only willing to eat Costco Pizza or some crappy Domino's because of how cheap you are, just leave. Deuces!

Getaway has very reasonably priced entrees and has great portions. Its hard to truly describe this place without you actually going here. The food is kind of like a ghetto gourmet. It's not fast food or Denny's, but it's got a very light sprinkle of gourmet to it. Your best bet is to go with the Burgers. They are not out of this world, but still delicious. Take it from a picky burger eater, they get the job done. Also, the sandwiches are all pretty good. The pizza is a tricky one, some are either good or nasty. It really depends on which favor you choose. I'd say go for the basic meat varieties and play it safe.

To truly appreciate Getaway you must be UCR student or Alumni or at least live in Riverside. Or else you wouldn't understand, it's Riverside thing. Maybe that saying will stick... its better than hearing someone say "it's a Jersey thing". No offense to Ghetto-siders, UCR is freaking the bomb dot com. Great people, great parties, great b**.. I mean ladies, and Great Engineer, Business school (now/soon a Med school and Law school, so suck it other UC's that don't have either) besides going to UCR, RIVERSIDE F***ing sucks! I lived there for a little while after graduating and I was slowly rotting away in the Inland-SMOG Empire. Ghetto-way is your only Getaway!

From the outside.. there isn't much to see. In fact the first time I met a friend here, I wasn't sure if this place was part of the apartments directly behind it. I walked in to what appeared to be a side door, but is really the front door. It was completely dark and only lit by neon glow of sport and beer signs. I almost walked out, because I thought there's no way I will like this place. I was just barely under the drinking age (haha like it matters in college) and hated the taste of beer, but something about this bar smell of wood and beer, and the taste of a decent burger made me feel at peace. Also, a few quarters can buy you a game on a very horrible, but fun pool table. Even before I would learn to give up fruit drinks and have a love for great tasting beers, there was something about Getaway that just felt like home...

I most likely will never be caught dead in Riverside with the exception of catching up with friends, but I miss my favorite beer. DROP TOP!! Try it! Stupid Yard House has it listed on their site, but nearly every YH I went to in socal does not serve it. If you are a UCR student, you must try this place at least once. Bring your buddies and relax and don't take life too seriously. If you are looking for something unbelievable and with white table clothes, don't bother. If you like decently priced beer and kick back atmosphere. It's Getaway time for you.

**I have no idea why I'm writing a review at 3:30 AM on a weekday, but I felt I need to give back to Getaway. I am grateful for all the good times. Thank you Thank you. Until we meet again. For now if my buddies are reading this, please poor some Drop Top off to the side for me. **

When I attended UCR, I usually met up with friends at the Getaway Cafe to celebrate the end of finals. It was a fun place to hang out and share a pizza.

Remarks: Casual atmosphere. Good variety of food and drink options. Affordable prices for the starving student. Within walking distance from campus.

Once a month or so, I have a little book club meeting.  And last month, two of the regulars were planning to go to Getaway Cafe afterwards and invited everyone along.  They sold it as "great place, cheap beer."  I didn't personally care about the beer as I was driving, but one of my Carpool Amigos decided to take the opportunity to get himself a Guiness on tap.

Before I continue, I should mention that the ones who had this idea were really excited about going here, and really built it up.  If I am remembering right, they go to Getaway every time they are in town, especially if it is Wednesday, because of the beer pitcher special.  So Carpool Amigo is getting a little excited-- he hasn't had a Guiness for months and is really looking foward to it.

So we get there, and there's a small group of people around the register with dumbfounded expressions.  A couple more people were hesitating about even getting in line.  But instead of tuning into the "I have a bad feeling about this" station, we all order some food.  (After I ran to the back to see if they had Dance Dance Revolution.)  (They do not.)  Carpool Amigo gets stuffed mushrooms and a Guiness.  AND THEN he watches in horror as the bartender holds his glass about two feet below the tap and pours him a glass of Guiness foam.

From all other observations on this evening of horror, I can say with some confidence that this bartender was about as smart as a bag of bricks.  Like, ten pounds of clueless in a five pound bag.  I'm thinking the Line Hesitators recognized him and were thinking about coming back some other night.

On the plus side, the mushrooms were good.  And we got to play some pool and some Time Crisis (I think it was Time Crisis) (the left side gun is busted, FYI).

In conclusion, I really wish I'd have been somewhere else.  I mean really-- all that for a cheap pitcher of Pabst?  That I couldn't even drink??

I'm guessing this place gets a lot of visits from UCR students considering it's rightttt across from the campus, haha how convenient is that?!

My friends, Johnny T., Nhan P., and, Nam N. took me here for some drinks. Actually, so that they can drink, because I told them I don't drink beer, but they ended up getting me to drink it anyway -_- Good thing it was hella good! Johnny ordered us a pitcher of Guinness beer mixed with cider? Yeah, some bombass beer! I downed that cup within 2 minutes! I told my friend Johnny that from now on the only beer I'll ever going to drink will be Guinness beer, haha.

Anyway, I only gave this place 3 stars because I didn't get a chance to try any of their food, pizza, nachos, fries, wings.. so next time when I'm back here, I will definitely try out the food.

I take this place for granted. I've been at UCR since 1997 (1997-2001 as a student, 1998 to present as an employee; full time from 2001) so I've been going to the Getaway every so often for the past 13+ years.

That said, it's a pretty decent place to go to and have a beer and a burger or pizza while watching a game on the big screen. The menu selection is primarily burgers, sandwiches, and pizza. Various beers on tap.

The food is hit or miss. The pizza is good. Some of the burgers are excellent. A couple of the sandwiches (i.e. meatball) I didn't like.

Price can be cheap ($10 and under), but I rated it 'moderate' ($11-30) because you're most likely going to spend $15 if you come here to get a meal and some beer (in which case you'll probably get more than one pint).

The crowd is usually UCR related. Indoor and outdoor patio seating. A few big tables to seat groups of 10+. Several 4-6 person tables. There's also a billiards table, arcade cabinets, and what not for further entertainment.

Atmosphere is pretty solid, though it can get crowded on some evenings, particularly during the UCR campus school year.

One time I was at the Getaway on a Thursday evening after an intramural softball game. I was in line to get a pitcher of beer and the customer in front of me paid for a pitcher and immediately turned around and bumped into me spilling a some beer on me. The guy gave me a lame 'sorry' and walked off, but the guy running the register saw what happened and gave me a free pitcher of Guinness.

I was about to give this place three stars, but after thinking about all the great memories I have from here...I couldn't help but add another star.

If you go to UCR, you have to try this place if only to be apart of the crowd. I know I sound like a boy, but go with a bunch of 21+ friends and get a pitcher of Hef, a couple of pizzas, watch a game, play some pool.. easy formula for a good time :). It's kinda funny how many random ass people you see at Getaway.

This place delivers too! I used to work on campus so Getaway saved me and my co-workers from starving multiple times.

The food is pretty greasy, but it's a dive so it's hard to expect less. Greasy, gooey, loveliness though! I think it's a bit overpriced, but ehh...beer, food, memories? I guess it's okay.

Recommendations: blazing chicken pizza, pesto pizza, tuna melt

A classic UCR spot and a place that definitely holds a lot of undergrad memories and old school rush shirts. Everything inside the joint is definitely dated: from the games, the furniture, to even the old school big screen. But hey, we go for the good times, good food and good friends. You'll find your typical bar food here and the beer doesn't disappoint either. You can't really go wrong with your order, so long as you keep it simple.

Recommendations: Blazing Chicken Pizza, Fried Mushrooms, Spinach Dip, Buffalo Wings and any other typical bar food. Also, the Hef on tap here is great.

Warnings: The food is a bit overpriced for the quality you get and sometimes they cheap you on the portions.

It was a pizza night free of tomato sauce and it was fu(kng great! We decided on 2 small pizzas and some appetizers.  We ordered their famous Blazing Chicken which has been so well reviewed here on Y- chicken breast, 3 cheeses on a light herbed sauce. A little bit of heat, lots of cheese!  And a variation of their Totally Veggie- Artichoke hearts, ricotta & sundried tomatoes instead of fresh with a basil pesto sauce & no pistachios.

Wow.... Nicely crisped crust, flavorful toppings, made to order by a great and funny staff. What else could u ask for? I even bugged the server to indulge me when I said I had a bet with my date over how high a certain movie would rank if u asked a random person what classic comic movies would be in their top 3.  Sadly (for her) she lost!  Boo-Ya!!  Soooo not only did we have good food, good conversation, I also won a bet, and believe me she paid up on her bet nicely!!!!  I can't stress this enough people- settle up your bets! Gamble hard and heavy but pay up when u lose. Your friends will thank you (and respect you...if u care about such things).

This place is definitely a college hangout spot as UCR is across the street and dorms (or off campus apts?) are behind the place. That and all the young pups in here who think their lives, conversations, etc are so important that they can't move their seats to let u pass.  Lots of Greek plaques, t-shirts and other Little League memorabilia tacked on the walls. Pool tables in the side room, approximately 10+ beers on tap. Some local microbrews as well as the usual biggies- Newcastle , Bass, Hefiewiezen, Stella, Heineken and a few ciders as well.  Great place to hang out and will definitely will be back

This place sucks less than it should.  Despite being forty feet from the UCR campus, I don't get that I-want-to-kill-all-you-little-twerps vibe that I would in most college bars.

The food isn't spectacular, but it's pretty good, and there's a decent variety of American/bar-and-grill stuff.

No liquor here... you'll be drinking beer for the night.  This is one of those places where you see all the taps and are impressed until you realize that not one of those taps is interesting at all.  Aside from one San Diego beer, I could get every single one of these beers at any ratty dive here in San Francisco.  They also have a bunch of tin Anchor Steam signs plastered all over the counter, but that's apparently the extent of Anchor's influence, because there's none of their beer to be found.

There's a nice outdoor patio, and tons of seating inside and out.  Decent game room with some arcades and pool tables.

Not a place you'd want to hang out alone, but bring a group of friends and you can probably make a pretty good time of it.
