Absolutely gorgeous views. One of the most beautiful wineries I have ever visited. Â Wine and beer? Yes. People were walking down into the vines and no one seemed to mind, so we went on a little adventure down to the pond. The staff was very friendly and accomodating.
The Viognier and the Cabernet Sauvignon were my favorites. The Viognier didn't carry the strong perfume that they typically do, but the taste was right on point. Â It's a perfect summer wine, or all year if you live in California like I do! The Cabernet Sauvignon, with soft touches of cherry and cedar was very exiciting.
This is, in my opinion, a great place. Â I only wish they also served food so I would have an excuse to stay longer. Â
Their red wines are serviceable and we particularly enjoyed the Cab Franc and their Petite Syrah and bought a bottle of each. Â
We live in Cool so it was a short 10 minute drive up to this place, but there were three factors made me want to check them out:
1. Wine tasting here is complimentary! Â I will not generally go to a place that charges for tasting. If I have to pay to taste then the bar you have to cross to get me to buy any wine is REALLY high. Â When wineries offer complimentary tasting my standards become considerably more liberal. Â At least where I am concerned it has never been to a wineries benefit to charge for tasting and I suspect that that is true as a general rule. Â If you are a major production winery in Napa I guess you can get away with it, but otherwise you are being pound foolish.
2. Â They allow dogs into their tasting room and onto their patio! Â Dogs like children come in ill behaved and well behaved varieties. Â People with ill behaved dogs don't take them into public venues usually. Â People with ill behaved children seem to take them everywhere! Â I love the fact that this place is dog friendly and there were quite a number of friendly dogs and owners around when we visited. Â When we decide where to spend an hour this weighs heavily in their favor.
3. They are also a brewery and if the wine doesn't suit you maybe the beer will. Â The patio makes a great place to enjoy a couple of brews.
Beautiful vineyard. Nice atmosphere. I give them 4 starts for the location, friendliness, diverse tastings of wine and beer, mustards and the fact that I was able to bring my dog into their tasting room!
The atmosphere was pretty relaxed. Beautiful view with outside seating. Â
The staff were super friendly. They allowed a few more than the alloted "5 tastes" and were able to recommend some wines to cater toward my picky taste. As a Zin and Petite Syrah girl, I liked their Syrah the best. In addition to their wide selection of wines (reds and whites), they also had a selection of beers. Seven dollars for 5 sample beer tasting. I don't really like bitter beer, but I was a big fan of the Scotch Ale. In addition to the wines and beer, they had mustards. There were only two put out to try, but they were both delicious! Â
I liked that there's a little something for everyone.
My now husband and I accidentally located this vineyard as we were looking for other vineyards to potentially host our wedding this summer. We enjoyed the drive in, the polite staff, the delicious wine, the pale, red, and scotch brews, and the venue for our wedding. The view is gorgeous and it's relaxing to hang out here. The day of our wedding, the staff were professional, helpful, and mostly behind the scenes. As a bride, I am very grateful for their ability to keep our guests satisfied while keeping the party rolling. Every guest exclaimed how beautiful the grounds were and how polite the staff were. The one thing to work on? Help the one staff who isn't as professional and polite withold some of the behind the scenes and/or personal info from the tasting room experience. We were overwhelmed when we were just trying to have a relaxing day in the woods.
Review Source:We came for the brew, but stayed for the view. Â This has one of the better views in the region from the balcony!
They offer complimentary wine tasting. Â The beer sampler $7.50 (5 x 5oz tastes).
Brews:
Gold Trail Pale Ale - Light, lower quality, not hoppy, not fruity (4/10)
49er Red Ale - Malty, sweet, caramel notes (3/10)
Old Miner Scotch Ale - Malty, blah, sweet, mineral taste at end. Did they just pour syrup in this instead of sugar? (2/10)
Hank's Honey Porter - smooth, good finish, balanced, better quality (5/10)
Axe Pic'n Stout - Fail! Is this water out of a river? (1/10)
Estate Wine:
Viognier was good, smooth, ready now - 6/10
Reserve Chardonnay - 6/10
Cabernet Sauvignon was smooth, notes of vanilla, good finish - 7/10
Barbara had a peppery finish, drink now, good - 7/10
Zinfandel had a peppery, sweet taste with a finish that was too strong on alcohol - 6/10
Overall, this is a laid back venue with a great view. It is refreshing to see a vintner take on the challenge of brewing, and while I appreciate the bravery, perhaps they should stick to wine making... There is some hope there.
My family and I have been here several times over the last 10yrs. We love the location and the view is beautiful. But the last few times we've been here the dark haired server has been unnecessarily rude to our group, over simple questions. We will continue to visit the winery, but its definitely not as friendly and as welcoming as it once was due to that individual.
Review Source:We came for the wine but we stayed for the beer.  Someone spied the beer taps behind the bar during our wine tasting session.  We found out they offered a  5 beer sampler for $7.50.  A few of us abandoned wine tasting for a chance to taste the brews of Gold Hill.
"Light" Beers:
The Gold Trail Pale Ale - Crisp and refreshing.
"Dark" Beers:
Old Miners Scotch Ale - Â Creamy with rich coffee notes.
Hanks Honey Porter- This had a subtle sweetness that wasn't obnoxious and didn't result in a "dumbed down" version of beer. Â I took my time with this one after the first sip. Â I regret not buying a few bottles to take home.
I've been here three times, and I think the quality has gone down in the last 2 years. Â It's a nice location, but the wine is more expensive than I think the quality warrants and if you get to try the beer (which has only happened once in my visits) it's good enough but not particularly memorable. Â I might stop here again if visiting friends and wine tasting in the area.
Review Source:My fiance (now wife) and I chose Gold Hill Vineyard for a 65 person wine and beer tasting the night before our wedding. Â We are from the east coast and wanted to treat our out of town (and local) guests to something uniquely Californian. People were blown away. Â The view was incredible and since not everyone drinks wine, having beer on tap was a home run! Â The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the evening was a complete success. Without hesitation I would recommend this venue for any type of gathering!
Review Source:I was here for the 2011 Barrel Tasting and was sad I didnt get to try any of the brews also. Â Darn! Â I am not sure why no one was working the beer tastings table but we were here for about an hr and no one came to work the table. Â The view was great, pretty pond and really peaceful area.
Anyways the wine was great, it is at this winery I learned how to say Meritage correctly. Â It is Meritage like 'heritage'....who knew?? Â Their Meritage-like Meriticious wine was smooth and delicious. Â Definitely my favorite wine at this sweet spot!
One star for the scenery.
We should've tried the beer...maybe that would get them another star...but probably not.
The wine is terrible. Poorly made, overpriced and just flat out bad. Â I can almost assure you that the Chardonay never fully completed fermentation...it had enough residual sugar that it could probably get classified as a dessert wine. Maybe the positive reviews here are from people who like sweet wine...nothing wrong with that, but you don't have to shell out $25 / bottle if that's the type of plonk you enjoy.
They're certainly generous with their tastings...the woman just kept filling our glasses as we tried to figure out how to politely make our escape. "Please, don't pour me another glass of wine" is not a phrase that I think has ever passed my lips...until now.
Couldn't get out of there fast enough.
We had our wedding at this winery/brewery which is located in the breathtaking hills of Coloma/Placerville. Â The reception hall and 1500 sf deck overlook the vineyards and hills making it extremely beautiful. Â The wine is amazing and must have gotten better since Tabatha Y wrote a review unless she knows very little about good wine. Â The people tend to be very laid back although the owners wife was quite rude to our decorator. Â Major downfall...over half of our deposit was withheld due to people entering the (unlocked) reception hall early. Â However, the staff failed to mention this the day of the wedding and nobody could even guess at who it might it have been when we contacted them later. Â My guess is it was just a cheap ploy to keep our money (over $400). Â Also, they charged us for carpet cleaning ($110) which they said they had just done before the wedding. Â They carpet however was nasty and smelly with dirt stains all over it (not "spotless" as the owner claimed). Â Plus, there is no kitchen whatsoever for the caterers, so be prepared to have your caterer bring a portable kitchen. Â For wine tasting and atmosphere, this place gets 5 stars. Â For organization and wedding amenities...2 or 3. Â If you're on a budget, it's alright, just plan on losing half of your $800 deposit.
Review Source:A pleasant drive up a winding road, through green fields full of sheep and ponies, ends at the top of a hill where Gold Hill Vineyard sits. Â It's a beautiful, although somewhat motion sickening drive..but well worth what awaits you at the end of your journey! Â My friends chose to have their wedding reception at Gold Hill and it was really really nice. Â The view from the outdoor patio overlooks sprawling green hills, which is the perfect way to compliment a crisp, yummy glass of champagne. Â The red wines (cabarnet, shiraz, barbera) are good but I was left with some sediment at the bottom of my glass. Â And I would stay away from the chardonnay (which tasted like soda water). Â Overall, though, Gold HIll is a wonderful location for a wedding reception, a warm summer evening with your friends, or just when you're in the mood for A Walk in the Clouds (Keanu Reeves style). Â Go, it's great.
