This place is recommended as a place to take an out-of-town guest? Really? This place is a total dive bar, but I must warn you--it's filthy. First off, minus one star for service being non-existent. We sat ourselves and after our order was taken, no one came by to ask if we needed refills, etc. There was a line to pay and did I mention it's dirty? Â Minus 2 more stars cuz that's just nasty. In our table was a gumball dispenser with pistachios (who knows how long it's been there), and it was absolutely filthy. It was cloudy from the inside of the dispenser with filth/grease all over it. The seating was uncomfortable as someone mentioned before it is like sitting in a church pew.
As far as the food goes their claim to fame is the "Slopper." Which initially, sounds like a burger topped with some chili, but it's actually a chili soup with a burger in the middle of the bowl. It was ok....I would go with the green over the red chili. Their fries tasted like it came from the freezer. Nothing too memorable and considering the whole experience, definitely would not go back.
What a dive!
There is something that I just love about dive bars, and hole in the wall places. Â Gray's has to be one of the coolest.
My wife and I went on the recommendation of a friend. Â He said we should try the "Sloppers". Â Basically a burger smothered in green or red chili. Â I expected a burger with a little chili poured on top. Â I was all wrong. Â These Sloppers were basically a bowl of chili with a burger swimming in there someplace. Â
I had red and green chili for my Slopper. Â While both were good, I thought the green chili was much more tasty and memorable.
The fries are not quite In-N-Out status, they are quite good! Â You just can't beat fresh cut fries.
If you have the choice between a table or a booth, definitely take a table. Â The booths are super uncomfortable. Â Imagine a church pew - only more unpleasant.
Why not 4 or 5 stars? Â The uncomfortable seating is a one star deduction alone, and the filthy napkin dispenser on the table another star. Â The burger patty also tasted like really low quality beef, that to me is a one star ding too. Â However, If I was rating on the fries alone... 4 stars.
It's is a four star dive bar. We decided to stop based on yelp reviews and thought it was fun they had been featured in a Food Network food challenge. Arrived right at noon during our trek to New Mexico. Parking was a bear but we finally found a spot on the road. Nice dark interior and very apparent that this is a preferred spot for the locals.  One table had a table that had a sign over it that said "Donnie's Office" and we swear Donnie was there eating with his lap top but we were too scared to ask since everyone at the table looked like they could star in Jersey Shore.  My friend ordered the deep fired corn chicken taco. She said it was very good and the sauce was a nice compliment to it. My husband and I both ordered the Slopper's and they were perfect comfort food on a cool fall day. The onion rings  were to die for.  And the pitcher of Coor's beer was the best way to top it all off. Well worth the detour off the main road and far superior to any chain restaurant. If you are looking for local flavor, this is the place to be!
Review Source:Gray's Coors Tavern is an old-school, divey tarvern. Â Overall, I'd say 3.5 stars but opted to round-up. Â Details are as follows:
Service - 5
We arrived with a group that kept getting larger. Â They did a nice job to get the orders in timely and repeatedly checked-in with us for refills of beers.
Beers - 3
Not much craft beer choice. Â But, the schooner of Coors Batch #19 with the Sloppers was pretty good.
Sloppers - 4
The individual ingredients were pretty basic and honestly low quality. Â However, the whole combination worked well. Â My favorite was the Xmas style (both red & green chili.)
Fries - 2
Undercooked & soggy. Â But if done correctly, they'd be probably be pretty awesome.
Ambiance - 3
Outside patio looked good, but was full. Â Inside is kind of like a divey Cheers-bar experience. Â It works. Â We opted to sit inside, but not directly below the office paperwork falling off the bar top.
Parking - 3
On Friday night, parking was very limited and we had to poach the neighboring lots on the next street up. Â Recommend checking the "No Parking" signs carefully so you don't get tagged.
When hankering for Sloppers & Coors beer, we'd go back.
Wow I saw one of my childhood memories on TV. Grey's Coors Tavern was having come kind of cook off with a restaurant in Pueblo West. This must have been what inspired my Pueblo food dreams of the last couple of days. Can't wait to go back this summer..... Grey's, Mill Stop, Passkeys, Do-Drop...........All of my old childhood eating favorites.
First off I am biased towards Grey's in this battle. I used to stop in here with my grandpa to get a beer for him and a Shirley temple for me before we went fishing we'd always get a Thermos full of green chili. Â And some oyster crackers for me. This was like 40ish years ago and I still can taste the local fire roasted chili's and pork stewing in my belly. Man that stuff would keep my belly warm on the coldest days fishing the Arkansas River. Wish I had some here.
I sure miss the taste of Southern Colorado Mexican Fare. Don't know why someone hasn't tried it here in So Cal. There is a void waiting to be filled.
Of course I had seen this on TV - and some locals recommended this place. Â I live in Las Vegas and finding a place that has this kind of character is impossible. Â This has a certain charm that only comes from a locally owned place. Â This is a place where some one loves to serve customers and make them happy. Â This is the opposite of a corporate run place - I hope it stays that way!!!
Of course had to order the slopper! Â I was suprised. Â It is a hamburger with green chili on it... woopdeeeedoo right. Â As stupid as a slopper sounds, it is dang tasty!!! Â I loved it! Â The fries were good too. Â Washed it down with a scooner of beer.
The bar has a bunch of sports memorbilia and local stuff. Â Service was good. Â
I gave this 5 stars because this is what's right! Â This is how a local joint should be.
Just ate here today on our way back from Bishop's Castle (also being reviewed)!
So. Â First off. Â I would be remiss if I didn't start off by Yelping about the uber-delishioso onion rings at Gray's. Â I can't believe none of the other reviewers mentioned them. The onions were fresh and strong with a hint of sweetness and they were crispy-fried to perfection. Â My lady-friend had been craving onion rings for weeks but was holding out to get some better than run of the mill ones. Â She was more than placated by those tasty circle shaped morsels (TIP: splitting a basket between to people is more than enough as a side - - Â -MAJOR PROPS to our waiter for making that suggestion as opposed to just going for the sell !!!). Â Now. . . on to the main course. Â The sloppers. Â Everyone except the obviously taste-bud-absent Trenton T. were right on. Â They were super good. Â The green chile is the best I've had between the Springs and Pueblo in my short time here (I prefer it ten times over that of King's Chef (which I like very much). Â Adding the onions and the little bits of pork really brought out the flavor as opposed to just "feeling a burn". Â Everything else mentioned by the other reviewers (history, ambiance, service, etc...) were right-on. Â The only negative I can throw-in is it was pretty hot in Pueblo today (like 95-ish) and it was a tad warm in there. Â Not sure if the AC wasn't working full tilt or what. Â We weren't sweating but it wasn't refreshing either (even for a dive bar). Â At least I know where and what I'll be eating next time I'm driving the 25 South! Â Damn I wish I had me another bowl of them sloppers right now!!!
Came here for work for a couple days and this place was recommended by someone in the local office. Â Had to have the Slooper of course. Â The food was really good. Â I was with co-workers so we asked for the check to be split. Â The waitress said that was fine. Â Our bill was brought to us by another lady, maybe a manager who said they don't split bill during their busy time. Â My co-worker asked if it was there busy time as there were not all the many people there. Â The manager or whoever replied "Yes." Â Sure hate to see the slow time. Â All in all the food was good. Â Would go back if I was ever in town again.
Review Source:After seeing the Slopper war on the Food channel, the husband and I had to stop here on our latest road trip adventure. The service, the food, and the atmosphere were exceptional.
The Slopper was not as much of a gut bomb as I expected. We had the half order of a single patty on a bun smothered with a delicious green chili, it was filling but not overwhelming.
Definitely worth the stop in Pueblo.
I love this place because I remember going here as a kid, and when I went in the other day not much has changed. I go here for the Slopper and a pitcher of Coors. I hear they were on a food challenge  and lost to another tavern but so what,  their Slopper is where it's at. Basically the Slopper  ( for those who weren't weaned on green chili like us Pueblo kids) is a hamburger smothered in green ( or red) chili, I also insist you add the fries on top, I mean the damages is already done right. If you want a classic Pueblo experience this place and the Slopper should be on the top 10 list.
Review Source:Don't judge food by a tv show. Come to Gray's and you can hear the real story.
Had the Double Slopper with Fries on top and a Scooner of Fat Tire. First bite I took put a huge smile on my face. Everything just goes together so well.
Has a very great atmosphere as well. Service was fast and they couldn't of been more friendly.
If you're in Pueblo Gray's Coors Tavern is a must visit.
