On an early evening in July I sat outside in the museum's ampitheatre listening to a local blue grass band (part of their summer concert series) surrounded by locals who were extremely hospitable. It was a perfect introduction to the people living in the Smokey Mountains of East Tennessee. In fact I found it more enjoyable watching the crowd at times then listening to the band. I had been here once before and found the museum to be particularly insightful. The rear of the museum has numerous relocated wood cabins, saw mills, as well an authentic set up for making moonshine which really gives a sense as to how the not so distant residents of this area lived. Of course part of what made this enjoyable was that I was here as a guest of the Way family.
