I was driving through Saluda, down scenic highway 176, on a business trip. It was nearing lunchtime, when I noticed Green River Barbecue near a bend in the highway.
Two words: "Saluda Stuffer."
Menu description: The Saluda Stuffer
"A Â 1/2 loaf of our Italian bread hollowed out and stuffed With our famous chopped pork BBQ. Served with slaw!"

The barbecue was moist, sweet, and delicious. The presentation inside a hollowed out bread loaf was unique. Serving size was very generous. The service is friendly. Green River has barbecue that one won't soon forget, in a beautiful mountainous location near Flat Rock and Tryon, NC.
We were in the area and someone suggested we eat here. Â Glad they did!
The wait staff was incredibly friendly. Â I mean, like we knew her our whole lives friendly (okay, slight exaggeration). I loved it.
The lot was pretty full but i was happy to find there were plenty of open tables when we got there. This was roughly 6 pm on a Thursday. Â As we were eating the surrounding tables filled up. Â
All the food looked great but I went with ribs (whole rack), collards, and sweet potato casserole. Â The "plates" come with two hush puppies so I also got to try those. Â The ribs were sooooo gooooood. And they gave me extra napkins and a wet nap without my asking. Â I'm sorry to say that for all the BBQ ribs i eat and all the BBQ joints I frequent that this is the first one to do that. Â I love the thoughtful touch. Also, yeah, that was super necessary.
The collards were yummy. Very fresh. I adore collards. Â I didn't think I liked hush puppies but was pleasantly surprised by theirs. So good! The sweet potato casserole was AMAZING. I almost ordered more but I wanted to try dessert to see if it was as good as the rest of the food. Spoiler alert: it wasn't.
Dessert was mixed berry cobbler (no ice cream). I'm sure the ice cream would have helped (because when does it not?) but this was only ok. Â
Other things to note: lots of groups came in (one big birthday party as we were leaving) but it doesn't seem like a terribly convenient place for groups. Â They made it work, but it's worth noting. Also, the parking lot is pretty small. Â Theoretically, you could park in downtown Saluda and walk up if it were too full.
Next time I'm in the area I am definitely going back.
I had an awful experience last night at Green River. After receiving chicken wings that were cold in the center, we kindly sent them back and ordered something different. I have worked in the service industry for many years, and while I understand that 'things happen' no one addressed the issue nor did they offer to comp even a beer. I don't expect anything for free and would also never send something back so that I could receive a discount or free item, but with a situation that involves cold chicken that I could have gotten sick from it would have nice to have it more acknowledged. We were one of two couples in there, and after the entire kitchen staff including the cook, came out to start drinking after their shift, the cook still didn't acknowledge or say anything. I have been to Green River once before and had great food, but I have to say, that last night's experience changed my mind about the restaurant as a whole.
Review Source:Ok. Â The country sides are awesome. Â Especially the fried creamed corn, fried green tomatoes, and hush puppies. The BBQ is just ok. Â Isn't moist enough and somehow never comes out hot enough. Â Sauces are limited. Â Great place to hangout. Games to play. Sweet tea is awesome, to the point of crunchy -- just like Aunt Polly's. Â Eat on screened porch. Â I'm giving four stars for sides alone. Â BBQ only gets two stars. Get the chicken instead of the BBQ. Â BBQ Chicken gets 3.5 stars.
Review Source:A friend of mine is interning and one of the local churches this summer so after church he said we had to try the BBQ here. The three of us went right after church and it was easy to get a table for a Sunday. The wait staff was efficient and polite. My Mom got the smoked turkey, vidalia slaw, baked potato casserole, and the green beans. I got the BBQ chicken with the sweet potato casserole, corn nuggets, and sweet potato fries. It was all so delicious. If we ever have a chance to come back to Saluda we will definitely be going again.
Review Source:Drove here from Charlotte with my mom. Â She moved to Charlotte in May and I was visiting from Chicago. Â My friend is interning at a local church so we decided to surprise him! Â He said we should eat here, as did many of the church ladies. Â So the three of us went to lunch on Sunday. Â It was a little busy, but there were open tables. Â My mom got the veggie plate with fried okra, tomato pie, vidalia slaw, and black eyed peas. Â She loved everything, and the vidalia slaw was awesome. I got the pork plate with collard greens (yum!), sweet potato casserole(yum!), and BBQ slaw(yum!). Â The pork was also great, and made even better with the BBQ sauces on the table. Â My friend also got the pork, but the large because he eats more than me....not surprising, he's a guy. Â After that there was no room for any other food in our stomachs (unfortunately) so we didn't get dessert. Â Hopefully I'll be able to come back with the madre when I visit again.
Review Source:Fantastic BBQ in the best style there is, North Carolina style (sometimes called Mexican style). Â Very friendly staff, fantastic sides. Â I got there right at opening on a Friday afternoon, we were the first there, but it quickly filled up. Â Didn't have to wait long for our appetizers or our food, they did a decent job of keeping my glass full. Â I'll reiterate, the sides were delicious, best sweet potato casserole I've ever had.
Review Source:We were visiting the Saluda area and Green River BBQ was highly recommended. Â There was a wait list for Sunday afternoon even though there were tables available. Â The place was understaffed but we didn't have to wait long to get our meal. Â The sweet tea was excellent. Â It didn't taste like all sugar that you get at some BBQs. Â We all had pork sandwiches that were delicious especially the ones that used garlic toast. Â The homestyle cole slaw was also very tasty. Â The only issue we had is that we were overcharged by almost $10.00 so check your bill carefully. If appears to be a family operation and they need more help. Â There were tables full of dirty dishes that sat for a long time without being cleared. The waitress told me that they always work with that same staff.
