First visit to Greenbush Brewery took place after a long day of hiking the Indiana Dunes. Even cold bongwater would've tasted good that hot day, and I thank Yelper Dan G. for the reco. Having had Greenbush beers before and since this visit, a visit to the Brewery/Tap room is highly recommended.
There's not much space at Greenbush, but there are a few hightops, communal tables, or belly up to the bar. Our waitress was nice- although not the best with the beer descriptors. When asked about a certain type of beer I had never heard of (let's just use IPA as an example) she replied back with "I don't know...it's like an IPA!" Kind of hard to read the chalkboard of beers all the way from the tables, I recommend having a printed menu of the daily beer selection with descriptors. That would also help with the Adjective-less Waitress. We did get to taste test the beer in question, so there's that.
We really enjoyed our sandwiches and brews. My friend had the turkey melt, but my roast beef on homemade ciabatta was the star. It was so good. Had the Retribution and also the UFOnation IPA. Both great brews. They have a nice variety of 4-packs to go at bargain prices. I took home the Brother Benjamin, and wow, what a great beer!
Greenbush Brewery in Sawyer is definitely on my radar, I'm a fan!
A perfect stop while exploring Michigan. Right on the main drag in Sawyer, this brewery has that Midwest feel that makes you feel right at home.
I tried out the $2 6oz. beer samplers while my partner-in-brewery-crime tried the $4 pint samplers. The beer is inventive and has that super hopsy taste not common to East Coast watering holes. Not only did the drinks please mah taste buds but the food topped it off. I had the BLT ($5) and shared the Blue Cheese and Bacon Dip ($3.50).
Worth the drive up for sure. I also saw this beer on tap at a very hipster/trendy place in Chicago - a sign of its likeability and great flavor.
This place is GREAT, but don't tell anyone because its already too crowded.
What can I say that has not been said. The beer is exceptional and the vibe is cool. They expanded the sitting area, which had to be done, but it did lose some of its charm when that happened. Either way, try the Anger which is a dark IPA.
I love this place! My fiancé and I spent the weekend in the New Buffalo area in February, and went to GB. We ended up hanging out for a few hours. I love the ambiance here--everyone here is happy and laid back. The snacks were great for beer drinking--loved the chips, pretzels, beer cheese, and bleu cheese dip.
The beer is heavenly--innovative, thoughtful, I love it. We live in Chicago and basically every other day I fantasize about us getting in the car and driving to GB brewpub for a mini staycation, which is what it feels like.
If you don't know about Greenbush, you should. You'll find their beers on every hip menu, and for good reason. They don't go so hard for hops as many craft brewers, working instead in darker corners, with beers named things like "Retribution." With beers so dark, you might expect a surly staff, but quite the opposite is true. Everyone I met was knowledgeable and wanted to share what they knew. Good job! These beers pair well food, and they have a nicely put together menu.
Easy to get to from points elsewhere, this is about it for Sawyer. Broad open space fills the streetwall, with hightops along the windows and a long bar with lots of seating. Still, went there in February and it was packed, I could imagine "in season" it gets jammed. They got lots of merch available to prove you were there and show your love for rare beer.
Get 6 packs here, apparently they are somewhat rare... all my beer geek friends were excited to see them, at least.
Excellent beer! Loved the Oatmeal Stout and the Porter.
Lunch was very good, I had an exceptional beef brisket sandwich.
Also love the logo and their marketing. Â They are in the. Isn't of renovating and enlarging, we will definitely be going back to check up on their progress! If you are on your way to Chicago make the very short detour off the interstate and heck out Greenbush, you won't be disappointed!
We went to a beer fest on Sat and Greenbush was there. Â They have quite the following. Â The line was the longest the entire fest. Â We enjoyed the beer we tried so decided to go to brewery after to drink some more and buy some to take home.
The brewery is nice, on the small side. Â The people were cool, the food was good and the beer did not disappoint. Â I loved "Retribution".
The only thing that I didn't like is that they didn't have 6 packs available for purchase. Â We live out of state and really wanted to take some home. Â Our car was packed so picking up a growler and then a cooler was not an option. Â Its the first time I've been to a brewery and was unable to buy bottled beer of the beer we drank. Â
I only hope they continue to grow and at some point distribute to Chicago area. Â I would definitely buy Retribution if it was available. Â
The Unicorn Killer pumpkin ale was great as well.
Brewed on site, small batches, run by locals who grew up in the area. Â This is a casual, easy place to hang. Â
It used to be a laundromat and video store a decade or so ago, I am glad that something relevant and noteworthy took over the vacant space.
The beer is good. Â There is a beer for everyone who likes beer. Â The atmosphere is fun, unpretentious. Â They did expand the seating area (thank goodness), so you should be able to sit down now. Â But because the space is cavernous, it gets hot in there during the summer and it can be pretty loud.
They close early, oddly enough, earlier than what I would expect. Â But this isn't the city.
The employees are so friendly and remember their customers. Â Come once, they'll remember you next time.
Make a stop. Â Have a great beer. Â Try samples if you want.
Great brewery in Sawyer.
Okay, if you like small breweries this is the place for you. Â We started going here about a year ago to get a growler of their local brews. Â They recently have expanded and added food to the menu. Â Best are the brisket and pulled pork sandwiches. Â Service can be a bit hit or miss and the air conditioning struggles on really hot days - like today when it was 101 degrees. Â Definitely worth a visit. Â
After you've had something to eat and drink, stop at the Sawyer Grocery Store on the opposite side of Sawyer Road and pick up the best pie in the county!
The beer they make here is some of the best in the nation. Â The food is just enough to soak up the beer in your stomach. Â
Expect to see a bunch of cool people from a broad area who like to drink beer, at any point of time, particularly in the summer. Hopefully they keep making their "PhD" malt liquor.
