The Groves is far and away the best dining experience to be had in Southern Humboldt!! Every course was a unique and vibrant combination of flavor and texture. The service was attentive without being pushy and every suggestion was helpful and on point and the menu features organic and locally sources ingredients. Don't skip desert because their pastry chef doesn't miss a beat! If you are coming in from the south exit at the first Phillipsville Avenue of the Giants sign and enjoy 14 miles of amazing trees to put you in a relaxed and expansive mood before dinner.
Review Source:This is an incredible restaurant....
Located in the middle of nowhere on the Avenue of the Giants in Myers flat California. Nicely decorated this small restaurant approximately 50 seats serves absolutely outstanding food.
The baked oysters are over the top. They bake them in a woodfired oven with a little béarnaise sauce, chives and some kind of Italian bacon, OMG are they good.
Also had spicy prawn appetizer - that has me wanting to go back for more.
The entrée, was a thinly sliced flank steak over absolutely delicious french fries, topped with béarnaise sauce.
Great wine pairings for everything on the menu. Best restaurant I have eaten at in a very long time.
Congrats to this out-of-the-way place and I certainly will be back soon
Absolutely amazing! Who knew such a wonderful place was hiding in Myers Flat. First off, Riverbend Cellars is right next door and offers fabulous tastings and good conversation. Afterwards, head to the restaurant and get yourself an awesome plate of food. Our party had chicken penne, new york steak, squash soup and smoked shrimp salads. Delish! One course after another was great and I can honestly say one of the best meals I have ever eaten. If you are wanting high quality food, beautiful scenery and nice ambiance, be sure to try The Groves of Riverbend Cellars!
Review Source:I live close enough to the Groves that I eat there several times a year. Â We are definitely limited in our dinning options in our rural area and the food here is better than the other two "fine" dining options we have available but after a large group meal there last week I am feeling frustrated enough to write this review. Â We had a group of about 16 ladies for a birthday dinner and like always, they put us at four different tables. Â It is almost like they go out of their way to be unaccommodating to large groups, so much so that the tables are bolted to the floor. Â There is a large table they can set up in the wine tasting area but they do not seem inclined to do so, instead causing problems for their other dinners by making the large group table hop and generally cause commotion to speak to someone other than those few at their specific table. Â It seems counter-intuitive to be an upscale restaurant and not want to accommodate large groups for special occasions. Â As for the food, it was hit and miss like always. Â The pizzas are generally a good bet, the salads were passable but not interesting in any way, and the salmon was great except for a large blood line left intact. Â The desserts are always wonderful, don't miss the ice cream.
Review Source:We live about 15 minutes from the Groves so we are frequent customers, whether we sit down to eat or order out. Its the best restaurant in Southern Humboldt.. their brick fire pizza's are so tasty. The filet mignon is cooked to perfection. Pretty much every special we've had has been right on. The location is out of the way but definitely worth the extra drive if you like good food. The service could be better and their house wines arent the best but the food makes it worth the trip. Campers should definitely try this place out!
Review Source:After a long camping trip, my friend and I came in here and ordered a pizza. Â We ordered the arugula and ricotta pizza, and were so hungry we didn't notice (until we ate our leftovers the next day) that it was covered in tiny pieces of bacon!! Â The menu didn't say there was meat on the pizza--we are both vegetarians and we were super sick for 2 full days afterwards. Â This restaurant needs to inform people about ALL ingredients on the menu and not assume that everyone wants to eat meat.
Review Source:We were looking for a place to eat while camping in the Redwoods. Â It was Sunday night, every place we tried was closed, and our kids were hungry and tired in the back seat. Â A clerk at the Miranda store suggested the Groves and it was so worth it! Â We had a great meal -- everything was delicious and very well prepared. Â They were very accomodating with my kids, even bringing over coloring and books while we waited. Â The bread with olive oil was delicious. Â We had a fish entree, the Thai spring rolls, spicy shrimp appetizer, beet/goat cheese salad, and a pizza. Â Everything was superb. Â I hope that business is good because they are really trying to do something special here.
Review Source:Best restaurant by far in the town! The sister winery next door is also open everyday serving free tastings.
I loved everything I ordered! The baked oysters were very tasty & the white bean soup was unique. A bit on the salty side but nothing to complain about. The best thing was the duck cooked 2 ways. It was served with a creamy risotto with a buttery kum kwat sauce.
The prices are very reasonable for what they offer, especially if you split everything so you can try more stuff!
And the complimentary bread is to-die-for!!
I hate to be a kill-joy after reading all the rave reviews, but my experience was terrible.  The host was extremely rude and snobby, and didn't make eye contact  with us or greet us when we entered the restaurant.  Although the restaurant was practically empty, he acted like we were lucky to get a seat.  I ordered the flat iron steak medium-rare ($33), and instead received dry, chewy tri-tip atop greasy fries.  My husband ordered the NY steak ($38), which was mediocre at best.  The portions were stingy for the amount of money they charged, and the service was just ok.  We won't be back.
Review Source:I came here with my family to celebrate my brother's high school graduation. Having grown up in Southern Humboldt, I know there are very few options for decent to fine dining in the area. When my mom suggested a place in Myers Flat, I hoped it wasn't a total dive, and agreed to go.
The restaurant is located next to a winery, and there are flowers and cherry trees outside. The decor is nice, especially considering this is So Hum. My cousin brought her 10 month old baby, and the staff were very polite and accomodating.
But the big shocker, aside from the prices, was the food. I am hesitant to get fish at any restaurant because it's usually not that fresh, but I ordered the halibut anyway. It was a large portion, cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. My boyfriend, a fish skeptic at best, tried it and said, "Now I know what you mean by fish that isn't fishy."
We shared a cornish hen appetizer, which was great on presentation and had good flavor, although it was a bit outside of my range of normal fare.
Two of our party had the steak with blue cheese sauce, which was amazing! Perfectly cooked, seasoned just right, with a pungent but not overpowering blue cheese sauce.
My grandparents had the duck confit pizza. They loved it. I tried some the next day and learned I'm not a fan of duck confit. To each their own.
We splurged and had dessert- chocolate mousse, lavender creme brulee, and russian cream with fruit. All fresh and very flavorful.
Overall, food was excellent. By far the best "going out" meal I've ever had in SoHum. Â My grandpa commented that he wondered how long a restaurant like that could survive in the area. Hopefully a long time, because I'll be saving up to go next time I'm in town.
The one weird thing was that the tables are bolted to the floor, so our party of nine sat at two separate tables which were next to each other.
On a long weekend, my husband and I decided to "run away from home" and take a drive up the coastal highway. Â As my husband says, this stop at the groves restaurant "made the trip."
It all started out innocently enough. Â We were driving along the Avenue of the Giants, when I spotted the wine tasting sign at the riverbend wineries. Â We had come this far up from San Diego, and had yet to sample any of the wines along the way. Â
We went in and tried several different types of wine, my favorite being the "firehouse red " and their White wine. Â When I asked the barrista where was a good place to eat our evening meal, she volunteered," well next door of course, we open here in 15 minutes." Â Now, the outside of the restaurant is unassuming and rather rustic, as one would expect for the redwoods.
When we walked into the restaurant, we observed this was no ordinary tourist cafe. Â The wait staff wore the white shirts and had the cloth over the arm like the upscale restaurants you only see in movies or go out of your way to visit. Â Instead of woodsy fare like barbeque ribs and such, there was "duck two ways" and roasted rack of lamb. Â The dish descriptions evoked visions of "top chef" and we both simultaneously wondered why such a treasure was here in the middle of nowhere, with not even a mention in the AAA tourbook. Â
The proof was in the taste, however, and unlike one reviewer posted here, the bread and olive oil dip were delicious. Â The entree's were out of this world. Â Some other patrons who arrived later also were overwhelmed by the menu descriptions, so my husband recommended the "duck two ways." Â I counted 5 times the lady in the party exclaimed "THIS IS DELICIOUS!" Â The meal was a culinary treat, in a land known for outdoor beauty and seasonal bug spray. Â Â It's easily the best tasting meal we've ever had anywhere in this country or abroad. Â Â We capped it off with a creme brulee' to share and coffee. Â Â
I rate this 5 stars for a couple. Â The perfect honeymoon/date night/anniversary place.
Surrounded on all sides by Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Myers Flat is a minuscule town that one wouldn't ordinarily think rates a restaurant as good as The Groves. Yet here it is, right on the Avenue of Giants, just off Highway 101.
We're very familiar with the local fare, as we take brief jaunts to the redwoods once or twice a year from San Francisco. So it's with plenty of local experience that I can say that The Groves is extraordinary. We were in the area for two and a half days, and we went back our second night for dinner because it was so good the first time (and let's face it -- there's very little else that compares, locally).
I gave The Groves 4 stars because it didn't disappoint, on two separate occasions. I was skeptical at first when some bread arrived with the menus that was far too sweet and fluffy for dipping in the olive oil it was served with. I was also puzzled by the slightly schizophrenic decor that's certainly nice and upscale enough, but had a few puzzling touches that made me wonder whether I was seeing a bit of the building's original use show through.
The staff was professional and friendly, our food was prepared quickly and served hot, and the water kept flowing. We were offered wine from the associated Riverbend Cellars next door, and we tried a couple glasses the first evening (although I can't recall what we had).
The halibut was quite good, I've only had better at restaurants right on the coast, and the braised and roasted duck was excellent -- very flavorful and not at all gamey. We finished with splendid deserts (mousse and homemade chocolate mint ice cream) served in portions worthy of chocolate lovers.
The following day we had The Groves' hamburger and one of their single-serving wood-fired pizzas. The pizza's size was just right after a day of hiking around in the redwoods, not too small as they often are in many California cuisine establishments. Even with the thin crust (my preference anyway), the meal was filling on a day that I was certainly hungry, and the wood-fired pizza and its adornments were extremely flavorful and the crust extra-crispy, just as I like it. The burger was fresh and excellent too, and the fries were great, no ketchup necessary, which I can't say often of restaurant fries.
For those unfamiliar with the Redwoods Region, Myers Flat is located just off Highway 101, a short drive (~10 miles) north of Garberville (which is about 200 miles north of San Francisco and about 70 miles south of Eureka).
Oh. my. goodness. This little gem in the middle of nowhere was such a find. I swear we were eating in a fine dining restaurant in San Francisco or Napa Valley. We happened on this place when we were staying at Myers Inn before a weekend of backpacking. The service was super-friendly and professional and the food was OUTSTANDING.
Everything was fresh, we had a spicy prawns appetizer with aioli sauce (I was tempted to get the foie gras, but was wary because I hadn't eaten here yet). Â I had a delicious green salad with split toasted almonds and homemade baby croutons. My bf had the corn pureed soup. We split the heirloom tomato pizza that we watched made. I'm talking bistro-style pizza. For dessert, we had the lavender creme brulee which was also out of this world. The wine selection was small but fabulous.
I can't explain to you how good this place was. It was as if the chef and owner (also owned the winery next door) were transplanted to Myers Flat to escape the hubub of daily city life. The food was fantastic, pricey, and well worth it.
