Good Indian food in Franklin area. We had malai kofta, paneer kadhai and chhole and all 3 of them were good. We asked for hot and it was hot!!! The good thing about their spice level was, that it did not come from just adding extra red chilli to the food. But it was all spices together that made it spicy along with thin slices of ginger and garlic. The naan was soft and fresh and overall I enjoyed my meal. The chhole ( chick peas) were really good and different from other restaurants.
The service was not the best. Our server was nice and the food was out quickly. The water wasn't re-filled as quickly though and my friends who come here often commented that the service was much better today than other days.
I would totally come back for the food.
Been here a couple times and both times been very happy with the food. Â For starters I recommend the oversized martini's. Â They are for two so the $13 price is very good. Â There are a lot of good apps so we ordered the combo - a good introduction. Â Lots of vegetarian options to please everyone. Â Our waitress and manager - Kelly was quite helpful .... which is what you need in a restaurant that you're not quite sure of what to order. Â I guess from the reviews that this is not a gaurentee. Â The lamb dishes I tried were all very good. Â The Novratana Korma was also good but didn't expect it to be pureed. Â Naan's a nice change. Â If you want a change of pace to your American pub and Italian rut - try a good Indian place. Â This be one of them.
Review Source:Food is very good. Okra plate in particular is our favorite. Service is fine. More people should go. I bet it is hard to have an Indian food place in Franklin, MA, general population doesn't seem too adventurous.
Go eat, try things out. Good spot to eat before or after picking a friend up from the train.
The food isn't bad - when you get what you've ordered. As some other folks have said before me, this place has some of the worst service I've ever experienced. The waitress I've had both times I've been there is nice enough but has no idea what the food on the menu is, obviously has never actually eaten Indian food in her life, and has not been trained on ingredients. Service is slow, awkward, and the management here doesn't seem to care that their servers are completely untrained and unversed in Indian cuisine - which is not the servers fault, but their own. The meals are incredibly slow to arrive and half the time are not what was advertised on the menu. I'm really hoping this place shapes up - it has potential to be much, much better than this but just doesn't cut it right now.
Review Source:I'm not an Indian food expert, but I can tell good atmosphere, and great service, and Guru has it. I can also tell you the food was delicious! I got the chicken vindaloo, the only Indian dish I'm familiar with. It was fabulous, spicy enough and perfectly cooked, fresh tasting. The nan was so fresh it was warm . My date was a real Indian food aficionado, and she was showing off ordering different fancy sounding stuff that I can't remember..... she said the food was as good as just about anywhere she's been. I am very happy to have a top notch Indian place in my neighborhood!
Review Source:I curse myself for not checking in on yelp before paying my bill, I could have gotten 15% off! My friend and I came here the Sunday after Thanksgiving and so people were still getting over their Thanksgiving coma and staying home watching football and dog shows. The dining area was quiet and in exchange for that, we got really attentive service. My friend got this weird sweet coconut soup as an appetizer and it seemed as if they poured coconut milk out of a can and steamed it in a pot. The lamb vindaloo was spicy and it made me tear up after ten bites. The beers were cheap & it was literally a block from the train station and Dean College. This place didn't serve the best Indian food but satisfies the hunger.
Review Source:indian food atlast nearby. we love good food and indian is my choice.  we went to this bar its very unique in the town did like it. sizzilers are very good in this place worth trying it. we heard live music is good in week ends form couple of others, would come back to enjoy it.  couple of suggestions for the staff and owner  Halloween is celebration in mass should have done some event in the place.   good staff good food and great place will come back.   i like pan cakes south indian style , introduce that in the menu.
Review Source:The worst dining experience in my 33 years on this earth, I swear... nasty atmosphere...but wait wait before you hit on me, its whats inside that counts, and trust me theres nothing "INSIDE" this piece of an excuse of a restaurant bar and grill , pure wanna show off trying to be an indian "cool" place not happening .......enter at your own discretion....BE WARE,,.,, MOUSE droppings and Glass SHARDS welcome you in your entrees....
I can't help but feel that a microwave was the key factor in making our meal. The samosa's were definitely re-heated in the nuker, having a rubbery/bendy, not flaky, shell. Nothing really special about the flavors, which were not all bad, just far from great. Day old, or leftovers comes to mind when describing this meal.
Breakdown of what we ate:
Meat Samosa's :: Â rubbery outside. Â mediocre at best. Â microwaved. Â Fail.
Palak Panir :: Â This was the best of the mains. Â Worth getting.
Dal :: Â Flavor was ok. Â Too soupy. Â Had funky film leftover on top. Mostly Fail.
Chicken Tikka Masala :: can u say "freezer burn chicken thighs" If you can't make this right, you shouldn't be in business. Â Flavor was what you'd expect at pretty much any average Indian restaurant that has a lunch buffet ..oh yea and there was slimy pieces of fat on the chicken pieces. Â Fail.
Garlic Naan :: Â Re-heated in the microwave dried and flaky like day old toast. Â Fail.
Keywords to recap the meal:
Frozen
Microwaved
Leftovers
Re-heated
Not fresh
Theres no option for ZERO stars, or else thats what this place gets, I read another comment about mouse droppings in the sauf, I am NOT SURPRISED if you looked closely as I do where ever I eat,  this place wasn't up to par in their cleaning standards , WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN, I HOPE there were no mouse droppings in our food and or shards of glass...Staff was slow and uneducated about the  food when we asked the waitress what she recommends she just gave us  a look like she just saw a ghost. I usually give places a second try just to be fair, in this case this was our first and last time going there, alternatively theres great indian restaurants in Worcester/Providence etcc do yourself a favor and take your $$$ some place else. This place is run by Non-INDIAN WANNA BE FOOD GURUS. I can easily go to the store and buy microwaveable indian food if i wanted just that.
I went for dinner here tonight expecting some great indian food. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and it delivered, as well as the naan which was hot and fresh. Unfortunately, mid-meal, I bit into a piece of glass. Fortunately, I didnt cut myself, but I immediately called the waitress over to have her take it all away. She was very polite about it and apologetic, offering me something else...but I figured I wouldnt press my luck. SInce I had ordered a drink, I asked for the bill, fully willing to pay for the drink, but not the dinner. Color me surprise that she would include the meal. When I said that I wasnt paying for the meal, just the drink, she had to go back and call the manager to get approval...in my opinion, this shouldnt have been an issue or even a question. After a couple of minutes, she comes back and says that the manager is on their way back and will talk to me. Another few minutes pass and the bartender comes over and does the right thing, comping the bill. They took my number and said that the manager would be calling me in a bit to apologize. I waited until now to write this review expecting a call. Since it didnt come, I would tell others to avoid a place that doesnt do some proper follow up on a customer finding glass shards in their food. While the staff did the right thing, if you arent concerned about your customers health, you dont deserve to stay in business.
Review Source:The food was delicious and the service was great. Â We stopped in and ordered take out and our food was ready in about 15 minutes. Â The prices are little on the steep side. Â Aloo Gobi was $12.95 for a pint container; I thought this was kind of pricey for what amounts to potatoes and cauliflower. Â I would definitely go back the next time I'm in the mood for Indian cuisine. Â I hope they do well; it's nice to have a different dining choice in Franklin besides Italian and Chinese.
Review Source:We ate here at around 7pm on a Sunday night. We were one of 3 parties in the entire restaurant, which made for a pleasant and quiet dinner. Our server was very nice, but seemed extremely inexperienced with serving in general. As soon as we sat down, she asked us what we would like to drink and what we would like for an appetizer, but we hadn't even opened our menus yet. Over all, our server seemed very uncomfortable and any sort of interaction with her was sort of awkward.
For an appetizer, we ordered Vegetarian Samosas, which were pretty good, just a little bland, but great with the red onion relish (?) they give you. In passing, the manager (or bartender?), asked if we were enjoying our appetizer.
For dinner, I ordered the Malai Kofta and asked for it Hot. The server laughed and said she would make sure my water glass was filled at all times. My boyfriend got the Chicken Biryani, which he said was good. After dropping off our food, our server never asked us how anything was, nor did she ever come over to fill my water glass as she had promised. It wasn't until we were done eating that she came over to check on us and see how everything was.
To sum everything up, I think the food is great (although, the "hot" wasn't all that hot). Although our server was very sweet, Â I think that the restaurant would benefit from a little more server training. Training may make the employees a little more comfortable with the menu items and a lot more comfortable with interactions with guests.
We will definitely be back to Guru, but I hope that the owners/managers make an effort to help out their servers with more training.
I am a huge fan of indian food but the best that i could get in the area previously was the bollywood grille in natick. i went here last night for dinner and my friend and i were starving!! The waitress was very nice (sadly i don't remember her name but it sounded something like rupaul) and knowledgeable about the foods.
The decor was pretty tacky but in franklin style it was italian looking with the wall paper and the columns and the gold rimmed mirrors then some bamboo spread around so a tad strange.
we ordered the vegetable pakora for an app. PHENOMINAL ( suggestion try it with that sweet brown sauce they give you)
and for dinner we got the garlic nan, matter panir and i forget what other type of panir dish we got but it was all sooo good. the presentation was very good and the quality of the food was excellent. The only downside was that you were not asked what kind of heat you wanted. i personally like my taste buds to singe so i would have liked my matter panir dish to be spicier but otherwise it was cooked perfectly.
unfortunately my stomach no longer had room to try anything else but overall i would go there again. only downside is that its a tad on the pricey side for the portions you get, other dive indian places would charge half if not less but fifty some odd dollars for 4 orders isn't my cup of tea.
OMG this place is no where near five stars! We tried it because of a coupon in a mailer.  And I really wanted this place to be good.  The waitress was really the worst part of this experience, she did not know the menu, took 10 minutes to bring our drinks and asked if we wanted our Vindaloo spicy (really?). The papadum are horrid. And when I pointed out that papadum are not served cut in half in a bread basket I was met with questioning looks.  Then we got two of our main dishes and the third came out 10 minutes later.  Of the two that were served, one was completely the wrong meal (and was sent back) and the other was not how we ordered it.  Finally the Vindaloo comes out and it is not spicy and the sauce tasted EXACTLY the same as the Madras sauce on one of our other orders.  By this time, one person is done eating, I am halfway through and the meal that was sent back finally arrived.  It's now been ~45 minutes.  So the manager brings another Vindaloo and says "try this".  Again, not spicy.  I asked him sarcastically if there was an actual Indian person in the kitchen cooking this food and if they were tasting before they sent food out.  The answer is no.  Come to find out that they were using paprika instead of hot pepper.  Just as we were wrapping up the meal the waitress then asks us if we would like refills on our drinks.  Then we tell her we would like the check and she proceeds to clear our table for 5 minutes before actually bringing the check. The papadum were comped as was my Vindaloo.  Overall the food was decent  just not what we ordered but the service was horrid even though the manager did everything he could to make it right.  Oh, and we were the only people in the place.
Review Source:The staff seemed a little confused with seating and our table was given away twice while we were waiting at the bar. Â The food was great! Â The server was a bit over eager but that's better than never around, you could tell she was new and hadn't done this before. Â Overall we'll be back!
Review Source:I make it a point to find Indian cuisine whenever I travel an I FINALLY found vindaloo that is worthy of the term "spicy". Good menu selection that is easy to understand.
NOT your typical hole-in-the-wall place! Nice dining room layout, complete with a full bar for us road warriors.
Friendly staff, eager to serve and open to advice to help get the word out. Kelly is the manager... She was very nice ... She also likes to break glasses
It is one of the better places I have gone to in a long time. I love the service and 10/5 stars for that. But I would give 4/5 on the food (because i am an indian and the food at guru is just almost close to authentic indian food). I love hanging out there for hours without getting bored. The bartenders and owner are very friendly. I will definitely refer this to my friends and to you all. But this place can get a little better in the food section.
Review Source:Guru is delicious. I've been here twice so far and everything has been amazing. the chicken tikka masala and chicken vindaloo were both cooked to perfection and the sauces had the perfect amount of hot for me. Veggie samosas were bomb! Decor was really nice too. If I lived in Franklin I would probably drink here.
Review Source:Don't be put off by the semi-cheesy name or the ho-hum signage, the interior is warm and welcoming, and the service friendly, professional and speedy. Â
Above all, the food is absolutely tip-top - some of the best Indian cuisine my wife and I have ever had, anywhere, including London. Â The nan was outstanding, the chicken tika masala excellent, and the lamb vindaloo both fiery and flavorful. Â
Highly recommended!
I just want to say I've never been to a restaurants where not only does the chefs cater to my tastebuds but the staff is amazing!! I know they just opened so I understand if service is a little slow but they made us feel like we were priority. One of the waitresses recommended a lamb dish I was a little skeptical of but I took my chances and was wowed!!! I think that If your looking for a authentic Indian restaurant and don't want to be in the busy downtown atmosphere check this place out!!! I promise you will want to come back!!!!!
Review Source:It's not that impressive looking from the outside but once you walk in it's really nice and comfortable. We don't have too much experience with Indian cuisine but the menu sounded delicious, so it was hard to choose.
Definitely order the nan to go with your meal, because it is amazing!
The sauces on the dishes are spicy and rich and have very distinct tastes from each other. We ordered the vindaloo and korma, both excellent. They serving size are also really good, enough that we ate everything but were not feeling overfull or left unsatisfied. We definitely want to go back for the dinner menu because it was much bigger and even after eating it was mouth-watering!
We had to get desert as well and we got the cream ball in syrup and rosewater. It was very sweet and even though it appeared small it was just enough.
Service was AMAZING, 5 stars.
We have told our family and friends about it and will be back! This is actually a really great restaurant and Franklin does not have too man of those. Definitely better than anything else you're going to find in downtown. Great job! We loved it!
Husband and I have been to dozens of Indian restaurants throughout the country and I'm very confident in saying that Guru's food in on par with NYC's best. It's THAT good. You know that awful heavy feeling you get when you eat too much Indian? Well, for some inexplicable reason, this doesn't happen at Guru--maybe they don't put as much salt in their dishes as other Indian restaurants? I really don't know, because there's definitely no sacrifice of taste in any of Guru's dishes. In fact, the tastes are robust, perfectly spiced, and just plain delicious. We've tried the Matter Panir (SO good. Lots of peas!) the vegetarian thali (a lunch dish that has hefty portions of food and beats the thali we've had elsewhere), panir masala, the vegetable biryani, the garlic naan, the rice pudding and ras mali (for desert). Not one complaint with any of the above--in fact, we've gone three times in their opening week; that's a testament to how good their food is. PLEASE support this restaurant; Franklin and the surrounding area desperately needs an Indian restaurant, and an outstanding one at that. Guru is that place.
