Just got back from the Lake and had a few bad restaurant experiences and a few great experiences. The Horny Toad's restaurant was definitely a great experience. We went there for lunch and then late one night for dessert and coffee. The service is good - not great, but they are usually very busy and some of the help have to cater to the drunk and rude crowd - so I wouldn't say it is bad. The food is great, entertainment is fun, and for the price you cannot beat it. For our anniversary we went to a new restaurant that opened called Savannah off of HH and paid almost $100 for a horrible meal. I asked for my steak medium well and blood was dripping from the steak when I cut into it. Sent it back and it came back the same way. This was after waiting over an hour for our food to come. I never had this problem at the Toad and paid well under half the price with drinks. This place is worth trying for the food and view.
Review Source:Wow, we felt old. Â Had a spring break atmosphere but upscale prices. Â Way too loud, we couldnt think and actually had to write the order down for the waitress. Â Lots of old guys and scantilly clad girls, felt sleazy. Â For all the hype, the food was very over priced for a pick up bar.
Review Source:Food is mediocre at best and the service is worse. The concerts are so loud you cannot hear yourself think. My least favorite place on the lake. My husband made me come for "Contagious" which was ok but every-time the lead singer yelled into the microphone I thought my head would explode.
Review Source:Had a late lunch here on the Sunday before Labor Day. We were promptly seated at a table for four with a view. Our server was a bit slow in getting to us. Although very sweet, she spoke very softly making us strain to hear her. She took our orders without writing anything, thus two dishes were not exactly as ordered. The food itself was pretty fair. I had the Cuban sandwich with sweet potato fries. The sandwich was large, and the pork was tasty; the cheese could've been melted a bit more. The fries were tasty but a little mushy; I like 'em more crispy. Back to the server-We had four separate checks which were correct, but she switched debit cards when closing us out, so that had to be fixed with a strange series of transactions. All that aside, this is a great place to get a square meal before having a few drinks and catching some great live music.
Review Source:The food was great! Had the filet bite Asian vinaigrette salad. Tons of fresh veggies ( snow peas, yellow pepper, mushrooms). Such a nice option over greasy bar food.
There was live music both inside and out. I wasn't familiar with the layout of the place and I knew that the Journey cover band was supposed to play that night. After a while listening to a really random band, we checked out the outside patio and discovered they were playing outside...We would have sat outside if we would have known.
Like everyone has said, this place is a bar by heart. I suppose it has changed since some of the other reviewers posted, as they now call it H. Toad. Â
My food experience was pretty good. Their prime rib sandwich was done really well, and the coleslaw that accompanied it was great (however, was not as spicy as I like).
We went back again and this time I had the southwest wrap, also very good, just lacked the heat behind it I would normally desire.
The service was as expected, not outstanding, but not slow or lazy by any stretch either. Â You don't go into a Denny's expecting 5star service, why expect the same here. Also, you're at the lake... Chill.
There was live music both nights I went. It wasn't too loud so you couldn't hear those in your party, and came with a variety of covers. All very well done for a local band.
Overall, I enjoyed it and would gladly come back.
It's a Bar, they serve grilled BAR food... If you want an amazing meal go someplace else.
If you want to take your boat out for an afternoon on the lake(have a designated driver, you'll get busted for oui quick on LOTO) people watch, have a cold drink, listen to some live music, and eat a little BAR food. Try it out.
The service is 3 stars, the food is 2 stars, the location is 4 stars.
3/5
Why would anyone go to a 1 star place 4 times?
Amazing, this place is like polishing a turd and hoping for a better result. It has a large sign, please wait to be seated. So we wait, bartender catches our eye and looks away, back to his remote control. So many tv screens so little time.OMG customers what an annoyance. So we walk all the way Â
to the bar and ask may we get a table. Oh sure he says but just can't quite disengage himself from that remote or tv screens.WTF where is the management in this place? Mister inconvenienced sat us and failed to reappear so we disappeared...moral of this story you can change it's name but a turd I mean a toad or the horny toad is a turd.
Place was hoping with a large bar and live entertainment which was fun. Â Food was dicey at best. Â Undercooked hamburger had me nervous. Â Very good hot wings were did arrive after a 20 minute wait. Â Slow service which kind of fit the laid-back feel of the place. Â I liked the eclectic collection of posters on the walls with everything from Clint Eastwood to Gilligan's Island to Charlie's Angels. Â Ode to growing up in the 70's.
Review Source:Not worth the money. Too expensive and poor security. Food is either tasteless or overpowering. Waiting times are very long. Staff is ignorant. No parking. I felt ignored and milked at the same time. I sure feel sorry for that poor neighborhood that has to put up with the noise from drunk tourists.
Review Source:The Horny Toad is an entire resort complex. It has a bar, restaurant, hotel, marina, and pool (with swim up bar). There are lake side walkways that have portable bars too. The atmosphere is very resort like and very much a "party" site.
The food was excellent. It is higher priced than the normal lake side fare but it is very good quality. probably some of the best food I've had at the lake.
The service was not very good though. Â The waiter was prompt but not friendly (not rude but not friendly). The hosting services were terrible. They would take names and hand out pagers, but people would just walk on through and get their own tables and the hosting services just ignored it and caused those who did put their names down to wait longer.
