Great spot to grab a cool refreshing pint after hiking around the battlefields all day. Funky little pub with some interesting beer selections that even cater to those who prefer Miller High Life. Our bartender was even cool enough to not throw me out after I ordered a Lemon Drop Martini! I know, I know...in an English Pub?!? What can I say, I am not a fan of the draft. We ended up ordering the Pretzel Palooza to allow us to enjoy a second cocktail (something Purple and similar to a sweet tart that the tender said was pretty popular here)...it was wicked good and tasted nothing like the Mad Dog that it resembled. It came with a small side of beer and cheese chowder for dipping which was amazing!! Was tripping out that the barkeep actually uses a Dumb-waiter (and I'm not talking about the staff) to send drinks upstairs! Nice seating outside and pool tables upstairs. Would most definitely return when we come back to the area. Very reasonable prices as well.
Review Source:I absolutely love this place.
Beer selection is awesome, service great, and the food...
I'm from Chicago and have stopped here a couple times when passing through Chattanooga. I always like to eat and drink local and this place is all about that.
They have a weekly menu that is comprised of dishes using local ingredients from farms and producers around the area and it is phenomenal. Every thing I've ordered has been fantastic, prices are great, and I will be sure to stop by every time I'm around the area.
We came to Chattanooga to visit the aquarium and saw this little gem as we were walking around the town. I do love English pubs and the big Union Jack on the door caught our attention so we went inside.
The pub has a very nice atmosphere and the waitresses were very friendly - however the only caveat I have is that it's not very "English pub"-y apart from the outside of the place. It felt more like your typical average bar.
The food was great though (we settled on delicious burgers! Not very English of us, heh) and we would definitely go again to try the Reuben that everyone raves about. I'm not knocking more than a star off since the food was so good, which is the most important part of a pub for non-drinkers like me :)
I was in Chattanooga for a business meeting. After the meeting I was wanting to see what all the city had to offer so I paid for parking behind the hair of the dog and walked down... I ended up walking around for awhile. So walking back to my car I decided to go ahead and eat. So I walked into the pub and it was rather empty but it was early so I dont fault them for that. As, I was eating alone I sat at the bar. They young lady informed me that they are known for their local beers which are brewed at a sister location. I ordered one of the amber beers (sorry guys I can't remember the name)
I looked over the menu and it all looked good. I kinda narrowed it down to the jalapeno turkey corn dogs and the fish and chips... Being I wasn't really in the mood for fish. I decided on the Corn dogs... But just then something else caught my eye. Something that intrigued me. Rueben Egg Rolls. I have to tell you I love Ruebens and could possibly eat them every day... So with that being said... I had to try these I mean seriously Egg Rolls and Ruebens what better Marriage of cultures...
The Rueben egg rolls came out with a basic thousand island sauce but thats fine cause the sause is not the show stopper anyway... All I can say is Well done guys, These were the best things I had ever tried before... The corn dogs were ok but I would have prefered to get a little more heat taste when I think of something that has jalapenos in them..
Since "Hair of the Dog" calls itself an English pub my husband and I expected it to actually be like an English pub. Â
The atmosphere is typical of any other dive bar with dim lighting and the smell of stale cigarettes. Â We sat ourselves at a small table near the bar downstairs and our waitress came over fairly quickly. We asked if they served a Diesel and she responded, "A what?". Okay, I half expected that, but I figured if it truly was an English pub she would know what I was talking about. I explained that it was a Snakebite with black currant. Â She again said, "What?". So we ended up just ordering a Crispen cider. Â I was surprised by the selection, or lack thereof, of draught beers. Â Natural Light at an English pub, really?
My husband ordered the Bangers and Mash and I had the St. Patty's melt. Â My husband said his sausage tasted like breakfast sausage so I tried it, and sure enough it tasted like Banquet brown and serve sausage. Â My patty melt was decent. Â The flavor and seasoning of the meat was good, but the cheese and onions were lacking and the rye bread just overwhelmed the patty.
The service was pretty good and our food came out quickly, but if you're looking for authenticity you're not going to find it at "Hair of the Dog"
I've been here several times for "Department Meetings" with the guys from work, but this review is from my visit here with Girlfriend and our friends. Â It was their choice to come here for lunch, but I didn't protest because of my previous good experiences.
If you've ever been here, Hair of the Dog is your typical dive-bar. Â It's dressed up like a London style pub. Â It's in a small, compact footprint... so there's an upstairs and a downstairs. Â And if you want to sit outside, you can do that as well. Â They have a pretty good selection of beers and your standard pub fare. Â You have to be 21 to be in here, so it's great if you're trying to avoid the tourists toting their kids around. Â It's smoky in here, so be prepared to deal with that... even during lunch.
The menu is fun, many of the dishes have interesting names. Â Girlfriend had the "Winner Winner Chicken Fried Chicken Dinner", for example.... and I had "Babe the Blue Ox", which is a hamburger with blue cheese and bacon. Â My burger tasted pretty good and I finished the whole thing along with my fries. Â I took a bite of Girlfriends fried chicken too... and at the time, I almost wish I had ordered that instead. Â
The server was friendly and attentive, bringing refills as we needed them... no complaints there. Â
My only real complaint about this place is that perhaps I should have had that chicken fried chicken dinner after all. Â A couple hours after we left, my stomach didn't feel right. Â It felt like I had blown up like a balloon and my stomach was in revolt. Â I'm not sure what that was from, but that lunch at Hair of the Dog was all I had eaten so far that day.
But that was one experience. Â I've had plenty more where I had no troubles... so I'd go back for more. Â Maybe next time I'll just have a drink or two...
If you don't like smoke steer clear. I don't smoke anymore so I don't mind. One of my fave dive bars in Chatt, kind of a younger college crowd late night but I usually see a few old timers hanging out. GREAT burgers and bar food--I was really surprised by the quality of the food. really. Nice patio and decent service. No kids allowed. Great place to grab a bite, have a few beers and bum a ciggie.
Review Source:Cute little pub that was within walking distance of our hotel in downtown Chattanooga. Â Pretty decent beer selection, awesome beer cheese soup and soft pretzels, and very reasonable prices. The 3star rating is because it was so damn cold in there in there I had to keep my coat on throughout my entire dinner. Â I asked our server why they kept the air conditioning so frigid in the middle of February and her reply was that the staff gets hot running around. Well I am the customer, I am not running around, and I am freezing! Turn the heat on!!!
Review Source:It's smoky. If you can't deal with that, you shouldn't go there. Being an ex-smoker, I enjoy this second hand vice. That's good for me because Hair of the Dog is a classic dive with good food and the best beer list in town.
The most memorable menu item is the Chicken Fried Chicken Dinner. Don't know why I ordered it since that isn't usually my thing. But I can still taste that tangy breading and tender meat and that was seriously, like, a year ago. The taters and gravy ruled, too. Check out the specials for gut-busting bar fare. You'll always find some version of deep fried cheesy goodness.
They have a totally respectable rotating tap selection, but see the list of bottled varieties for something special/ high gravity. Despite the sullen hipster vibe (it is a dive, after all), I've found the service to be generally friendly and competent.
Oh my goodness, this is the best bar in Chattanooga, my absolute favorite. Â I have been here so many times and have some great memories! Â :) Â There are two levels with pool tables upstairs, as well as two levels of patio seating, and the atmosphere is really relaxed. Â The food is rather incredible as far as bar food goes... I always order the black bean burger and french fries, but the reuben rolls are really tasty, too! Â They offer a great selection of beer and drinks, and normally have some interesting specials. Â I love that the clientele is so diverse as well - hippies, hipsters, college bros, middle agers, whatever! Â They don't discriminate!
Review Source:An all-around great pub. It can be kind of noisy inside, but there is outdoor seating (which I recommend regardless). The customers are varied and you could be sitting next to a table of frat boys or thirtysomethings. While I may not like the average frat guy, I like that kind of variety in a place.
Review Source:Great drink selection and excellent pub fare!
Unfortunately, now that I'm well out of college, I don't much care for bars that you can't move in because they are so crowded. I love going here before the party hour starts, have a nice drink, good food and then get outta there before it gets rowdy.
Not a fan of places that serve food and allow smoking, so that was a big strike.
We stayed in Chattanooga for a month on 2 separate occasions and while looking around for a good dive bar, we found Hair of the Dog and frequented it on weekends. On a weekend afternoon, it looks like a nice local's bar with dark woods and pub decor. The bathrooms are decent. they had several things on the menu worth eating and some great micro brews and drink specials, including a bloody mary bar. The staff were friendly and prices reasonable, for a downtown bar.
... On a weekend night it is one of the only downtown bars that doesn't look like it charges a cover or is filled with complete douchbags, although it did have a hovering group of drunk sports fans and high heeled girls limping on twisted ankles outside. On an average Saturday night, the inside was fairly packed, though we did get a table upstairs, next to the pool table where we spent most our time with mens asses within inches of our faces as they gossiped around the pool table and picked fights with one another while bellowing over some game on the TV and drinking crappy cheap beer (and we left smelling like a smoker's ass).
Coolest part of the place, The dumbwaiter that gets the drinks upstairs and the oatmeal stout. The worst part, being there on a weekend evening when you don't smoke, like shitty cheap beer or sports. But, if you don't like those things either, I have no other recommendations for you in Chattanooga and this is probably your best bet.
Pros:
Pretty darn good pub fare with some rather fun and unhealthy originals. In fact, the "Black and Tan" dessert (fried brownies and bananas surrounded by ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup) may be one the best creations ever. (This is why you're fat.) The beer selection is fantastic for Chattanooga.
Cons:
"Dude-brahs" there sometimes get extra annoying when they've had a few too many. If you don't like a little smoke, that's another drawback. It also gets occasionally slammed and/or understaffed.
I would give them five-stars, but they do get pretty slow when they're busy.
Cool old style building another great authentic chatt tavern. Upsairs has pool tables, dart boards, & a small bar that wraps around an old school dumbwaiter. They have a two story patio which is nicely shaded. Pretty good apps & ok drink specials with lots of diff beer choices. Just a cool low key chill hangout for the locals.
Review Source:"'scuse me, brah." Â "sorry, man." Â If not for having to say that every time it's your turn at the cue or slinging a dart, it would probably get 5 stars.
Playing pool or darts here is practically impossible. Â There's just not enough room. Â
Location? Â Excellent. Â
Pub feel? Â Fo sho.
Drink selection? Â Good enough.
I'll admit, I don't think I've ever had any food here. Â Wait, maybe I have. Â Probably just can't remember if I did or not. Â Unfortunately, smoking is allowed, so you'll be smelling pretty D when leaving. Â
There are also some characters that find their way in. Â The 20-something with google-eyes towards the 50+ y/o and the ensuing make-out session leaves me coming back, tho.
Great Place!
Bar and outdoor patio with multi level seating. Interesting menu as some English/Irish spin. Bangers and mashed good stuff. My wife had grilled salmon and home fry casserole, both excellent. Extensive beer list and great bloody Mary! Just ask for extra shot and all is well.
the only thing i didnt like from this place was the fact u can smoke inside and when ur eating thats not so steller.....but the staff was supper attentive and helpfull....the food was amazing we had a turky amazingness sandwich with sweet potatoe fries and i hadnt had a turkey sammish like that in a long azz while....and lets not mention the beer selection was quite swell ;0)
Review Source:I came here for dinner on a Tuesday night. Â I didn't go upstairs, nor did I go onto the deck. Â
First, if you're bothered by cigarette smoke, this is probably not the place for you. Â The place was pretty smoky even at 6pm, so I can imagine that it gets downright China-smoggy during peak pub hours.
The little bit I saw of the place was really charming. Â It came across as being like that one friend that everyone has that shows up to the toga party in jeans and a t-shirt. Â Take it or leave it. Â It's cool without you.
Hair of the Dog is kind of like that.
It's smoky, and I didn't see any Miller/Bud/Coors Light on tap. Â There's no Golden Tee machine and the TV is only visible by 4 seats at the bar. Â
I really like it.
4.5 stars. Â I know I'm a jerk for rounding down... get over it. Â
I grew up in Chattanooga, and Hair of the Dog wasn't around when I lived there. However, no trip home would be complete without a visit to Chattanooga's only real Irish pub (since the closing of Durty Nelly's across the river). Â
First, this place gets really, really crowded, especially after 10-11 PM. When you first walk in, you'll notice a gathering of tables on the right and the bar right in front of you, with a staircase to the left. Upstairs are two small pool tables that barely fit, given the narrowness of the building and two dart boards. There is also an old-school dumbwaiter system that the bartenders use to transfer drinks from the bar downstairs to the waitstaff upstairs. Never seen anything like it, and it's very cool. There is also a huge two-story deck out back that opens up during nice weather that helps with crowd control.
Beer-wise, this place has 12 on tap... 11 mainstays and 1 rotating seasonal. Â They also have a ton of bottles, 30+ if I remember correctly. The food here is decent for bar food as well. Try the fries. Trust me.
The service is just ok. Granted, the only time I'm there is during peak hours, and I understand that it can take a while to get service when bars are crowded. Don't expect instant service during peak times, like most places. Staff is very friendly though, for the most part.
Definitely worth a look, especially late night. Â Good times to be had here.
