BEST wings I've ever had. My absolute favorite place in the 5 college area to eat. Great wings - both bone-in and boneless. Wonderful selection of sauces and dry rubs. If you're looking for hottttt wings? They got it. Not into heat? They have some flavorful options.
It can get crowded, but it's honestly worth the wait.

Be prepared to be overwhelmed with the number of flavor choices! Some of the flavors are sauces while others are dry rubs.  You can also get your orders 1/2 one flavor and 1/2 another.  We got a combination of regular chicken wings and the boneless, I definitely recommend the boneless!  The nachos were great as well, and the chili comes in a bowl, so you dont have to worry about soggy nachos!  The server was attentive given how crowded it was; however, the only thing that was frustrating is standing around for several minutes as people passed us waiting there, and nobody greeted us and told us whether or not to continue to wait to be seated or just find our own seats.

AMAZING food for a great price. The delivery is usually fast. My boyfriend and I eat the shit out of these. We went to the location once and enjoyed great service, but we're not fans of sports bars, so we just do delivery now.

The one problem I have with it is that you never know what's going to happen to your food when you get it delivered. Sometimes the bag that they put over the takeout box is stapled 5 or 6 times to the box, and you have to rip the box to get the bag off of it. Sometimes they put it upside-down in their cars, so when you get the bag off, sauce goes everywhere. Sometimes, they put the fries on top of the wings so you have to transfer the fries to a plate or eat them first.

Otherwise, it's great stuff! I dare you to show me better drunk food than this.

This is my favorite place to get wings (Red Alert). The beer selection is Fantastic too with many unusual brews on tap.
This last time that I went they were doing a "Black Wednesday" special selection of Dark beers.   I was a little bummed that they had just stouts and porters no Lagers on the list (say like a Märzen or Dunkel cause i'm into German Lagers), This just forced me to try something that I would normal have and I certainly enjoyed what I got (sorry i forgot the names). Personlly I  enjoy trying new beers so this is my kind of place, if you can't deal with out Sam Adams then you should go to TGI Fridays or Applebees.

    Cheers

    Best wings in Amherst!

Love the food. Been coming here for 10+ years and I can say that the food has maintained flavor and quality. I hope this does not change. This is a popular spot and is usually crowded. The place is super casual (as in they leave a roll of paper towels on the tables for wiping the buffalo sauce and blue cheese etc.)

We love the wings, tenders, burgers and waffle fries!

The house salad was giant and crunchy.

Service was always been decent and quick too.

Stop reading this and start driving to the Hangar.

Pros:  Good place to feed a lot of people cheaply.  Lots of beers on tap.  A few very nice waitresses.  Domestics are cheap, $3 or so for a good sized Coors Light.  Wings pretty tasty, lots of flavors.  Salads good also.

Cons:  Noisy, gets packed on weekends.  Lots of college kids in a small space.  Many more apathetic, inattentive waitresses.  Imports and craft beers are not a good deal.  Dirty.  Tiny, disgusting bathrooms.

Know what you're getting into, and be in the right mood, and you will do OK.  Don't heat up leftover boneless wings in the microwave, seeing the grease liquify in the way it will is really stomach turning.

Great wings, terrible service. Be prepared to be ignored, with long waits at every stage. The restaurant is also crowded and noisy  At Rafters, just up the road, the wings aren't as good but the service is better.

This is what every man cave should be like:  big ass flat screen TV's playing sports on every wall and a steady stream of cute girls bringing me plates heaping with some of the best buffalo wings I've had anywhere.  I split an F-16 (15 wings) buffalo style with the Red Alert sauce with a buddy of mine.  The sauce had just the right amount of heat to it and my friend said their blue cheese sauce was excellent.  Beer choices left a little to be desired but on the bright side they did have Hoegaarden.

I don't know what the name is now, But I always call it Hangar.  Great wings, great staff, the atmosphere is great when games are on.

New England has a problem with calling food spicy when it really isn't.  So the hottest level of spicy wing is actually kind of disappointing.  That is my only complaint for this historic landmark.

    Best wings, hands down.

Whether you like boneless or with the bones in, I don't care. Just make sure you have it with the bleu cheese. Personally, my bleu cheese philosophy is - the chunkier, the better and The Hangar doesn't skimp on the chunk. Like it, love it, gotta have it. It puts bleu cheeses at other wing spots to shame, easily.

Obvious flavor choices are honey bbq, honey mustard, and the 5 levels of Buffalo style. All great choices and the Buffalo sauces live up to their names unlike other places. However, I can't go to The Hangar without having mesquite wings with the bones in (always with the bone in - always). Their wings - boneless & bone in - are also really meaty too, none of that flimsy anorexic shit like at other wing spots. For a side, the mesquite waffle fries are a must. Best little morsel of potato to ever accompany a wing. Don't even think about not getting the processed nacho cheese either. Although you may question its bright yellow color and its not-so nutritional value, you will forget all about that once its in your mouth. Then, and only then, will you understand what I'm talking about.

The restaurant is always super busy around dinner time and of course when there are games on. The wait can be pretty long too since it's not that big of a place but no fear, just come early to grab a table, otherwise you'll miss out on some pretty amazing wings.

Good wings. Got the typical sweat chilli which was the franks version, but I love the one.
Also had the afterburner, good but did not really hit me to the next day! Ha

    I'll return

Quintessential sports bar. Best boneless wings I've ever had, and the Nachos with Chilli second to none.

Hangar is best enjoyed in groups. Order their wings, and get one of them towers of Budweiser.

As a bonus, they have some pretty hot waitresses. Be warned that on the game nights, it is packed. Plan to arrive at least 1.5 hrs before the game begins.

Boneless wings are exceptional. Wide array of sauces, each tasty in their own right. I am a huge fan of honey mustard and honey BBQ.

Most the time I order after a long night on the town; however, I have been inside a few times. It's not a fancy establishment but still offers a fun atmosphere.

Cute employees and the age of the crowd tends to be younger.

The best boneless wings I've ever had. The honey BBQ wings are fantastic. The atmosphere is college-student-ish, but no matter, I'll still be going here when I'm 92.

I've been here about 8 times even though I live 100 miles away and didn't even go to Umass Amherst! I always choose between this place and Bub's BBQ in Sunderland when I'm in the area.

If you like wings, you'll love this place. Buffalo Wild Wings pales in comparison.

This is the perfect place to live at if you are in college.  TVs everywhere for sports viewing and decent specials on wings and beer.  All you can eat trough right at you enter has wings and chicken fingers piled high...I guess this is only Mon and Tues.  Just so happens it was Tuesday the wife and I were there.  The special seemed to be the most popular item that night.  Flocks of co-eds made multiple trips to the trough.

The wife and I ordered up some beers of a very extensive and impressive list.  At such a college influenced bar you would expect the typical American regulars and light beers.  But they had a plethora of micro brew choices as well.  The wife had some Oktoberfest hefeweizen and I had one as well and then a Harpoon Oktoberfest.  We then had some waffle fries along with an order of 10 wings aka the PUDDLE JUMPER (Honey BBQ and Red Alert buffalo sauces) and the Boneless DC-3 about 5 tenders barely dressed in the parmasean peppercorn sauce.  Overall, these are some really good wings.  I am not a hater, but these aren't the best wings.  They are really good though.

Fun place to be at happy hour.  And can understand why the wings are addictive.  Will definitely make it a stop on the next trip to UMASS with the wife.

A small bar / pub that is part sports bar part air travel history...good food but there seems to be a lack of urgency here...if you know this when you go in...you will be fine & roll with it.
Nice beer selection & very good bone-in/boneless wings/chicken.
No frills...but roll with it & you will have a good time.

god goes here to eat wings.  this is the ULTIMATE bar menu with traditional burgers, fries (gravy, cheese & more), super potato skins.  My personal favorite is the boneless wings (DC-10) with honey mustard & BBQ.  There is no bad flavor.  The on-tap beer selection is abundant and there is nothing but sports playing on the TVs.  the waitresses are hot (most go to school in the area) and make the place perfect.

Go early on game day b/c it will be PACKED!  They also deliver & the food is just as good.  Get a 747, some fries and enjoy a full day of football!!

Came here on a tuesday to get the $6 all you can eat boneless chicken. SO GOOD and a great deal. However, they only had 3 flavors to choose from, mild buffalo, honey mustard and honey bbq(I think) none the less, it was good and the chicken kept getting replenished so it was very fresh.

Since it was the special deal, the place was pretty full. And for a bar feel, it was pretty clean. We waited 5-10mins for a table, but it was not so bad. Once we were seated, our waitress was attentive and we started digging in. We also ordered a plate of cheese fries, "The Mess" which was topped with gravy and melted cheese and sour cream on the side. I think this is their take on the Canadian dish called pouttine (sp?) it was so good.

after 3 full plated of chicken i was in chicken coma, but so full and it was awesome, I want to try to stop in a tues one more time before graduating!

Hangar has made a name for itself as the wing house of Amherst. If you want wings with delectable varieties of flavors to try, you should go to the Hangar.

There is a franchise in existence now, called "Wings Over..." that extends the span of their influence. In Boston, one can get Hangar-quality wings from several "Wings Over" establishments. But to be fair, the quality of "Wings Over" is merely a fraction of the original, tried and true quality of Hangar Wings.

I love the Honey BBQ, but they have a shopping list of flavors to choose from. They have 5 different buffalo varieties that range in intensity, so buffalo fans can rejoice and challenge themselves.

They're also a bar, which means they carry great beers to match your meal. It's the best place to watch a sports game, eat some wings, and have a beer with your friends.

Their prices are reasonable. You get a lot for your money, and usually walk away satisfied. They also cater, which is excellent for outdoor events. You simply can't go wrong, but the only negative is the size of the bar. It may take a while to get seated if you go on a popular night (Thurs-Saturday, or sport nights). If you want to avoid the hustle and bustle, simply order for take-out. They're about 9.5/10 times as good as they are in-house.

You will wait for a long, long, long time before you are waited on, and a long, long, long time before you receive your food. If you are not a fan of a loud sports bar atmosphere, you may not enjoy your wait. They are always packed, which is what leads to the feeling of pandemonium.

I strongly recommend calling in ahead of time for take-out, because the wings are just about the best wings ever in the history of ever. You shouldn't miss them. You might enjoy eating them in a timely fashion, in the joyful/peaceful atmosphere of your choice, rather than in the Hangar itself. I always get the garlic boneless wings, and I always feel like I should order seven or eight gallons of wings because they are that good (though I can barely finish even a large order alone).

Roughly 3 lbs of perfectly prepared boneless chicken smothered in honey mustard sauce at a very reasonable price and a great beer list make the Hanger a definite must-eat while in Amherst.

Bonus: The leftovers tasted just as good a couple of days later.

Warning: Parking can be a bit of a chore and the waitress seemed to have better things to do than to take our order in a timely manner or see if refills were needed.

My boyfriend and I arrived here skeptical that the wings could really be as good as the reviews have said. We patiently waited in line, until another person in line took over sending groups to tables. Mind you it was a Sunday Game Night! The atmosphere was loud and rowdy but tables were talking to each other and laughing and yelling for the games. It was awesome! Our waitress came by and was pretty attentive for how crazy the place was. It didn't take long to get our wings. We choose Spicy Teriyaki, Jamaican Jerk, and Honey Barbecue.

Both of us instantly were quiet and ignoring the game, they were amazing. They were crispy and juicy with lots of sauce all over them.  Our favorite was the Jamaican Jerk, we ordered 4 containers of just the sauce to bring back to our part of the state. The Teriyaki was good but not so spicy, more of a sweet and sour, but we loved it too. Finally, the Honey Barbecue was good as well.

We determined that we don't know if these are the best wings that we have ever had. But we know they are pretty close to the top.  By far the best we have had in the state. This is saying a lot since I have covered Texas and he's covered the west coast!

We'll be grabbing our friends and taking a short game day road trip down here just for the wings. Go Pats!

The original Wings Over. If you're within 20 miles of this place, you gotta try their stuff because it's crack!

On high-demand by UMass Amherst students, this is the place to get your fried pieces of chicken, boneless or on the bone. They have more than 15 different flavors, where for the combo meals you can choose about 3 to 4. My favorites are garlic parm, honey mustard, and honey bbq. I wouldn't recommend the teriyaki or their oriental flavor though, save that for when you go to Chinese take-out joints.

They sell their stuff by the pound, not by the piece, which is good because a lot of other spots would count lil' nugget-sized pieces as a whole, which my money doesn't agree with. Their waffle fries are BOMBBB, especially the cajun flavor; I highly recommend them. The regular fries aren't so hot, and they get soggy when you ask for delivery, which is wack. I asked for extra celery and asked the girl if it would be extra charge, and she said no, but it was--just so y'all know in case you want extra celery.

But besides those little tidbits, they have super fast delivery; even though they say it'll take about half an hour, they get there in less than 20!

Best place to get wings in Amherst.  Honey mustard and garlic parm are must haves.  If you go to UMass or live in Western Mass, you need to give these wings are try.

I usually just get delivery.  I gave Hangar 4 stars instead of 5 stars because the sports bar feel crowded and it is very dark.  Buffalo Wild Wings has the better set up and I would go there to watch UFC fights.

They can put tables together to accommodate groups. Went with around 13 people. Some flat screen tvs so you can watch the game that is playing that night. They have a bar. The guy next table over was drunk and annoying the crap outta me. Kept turning around. I believe the girl next to him was his girlfriend who was ALSO drunk. Obnoxious. Don't talk to me please. We ordered a biiggg plate of wings, YUM, 4 flavors, i like honey mustard, garlic parm, we also got the spicy one..and then honey bbq. Also Waffle fries! DELICIOUS. I wasn't 21 yet so i had water. The plates they give you..are the ones we use at UMASS dining! HAHA.

On another note, its pretty fast delievery and if they eff up and forget your drink, then they won't give you another one unless I guess you check your food right in front of the delivery guy.

When you drink..get some wings! nomnomnom :)

Despite being a dingy college sports bar this place has the best wings I have ever had.  Truly amazing.  The Golden BBQ flavor will rock your world.  If you live in Western Mass and eat chicken you must try this stuff.

They deliver but eating them hot off the plate is pretty great.  Just wish the bar/restaurant was more charming.  The waitstaff are insincere hoochy mamas( although some are nice to stare at and some are just plain nice) and the bartender is not very friendly.  The music is turned up WAY too loud to talk and its pretty cramped.  But the food makes it all worthwhile.  This place is an institution.

I'm so, so conflicted over the Hanger/Wings.  I love it - I love it!  I've lived in Amherst for 6 years, I went to undergrad here; how could I not love it.  It's an institution, and its wings and The Mess are incomparable.  Hence, the four stars.

HOWEVER.  1) The wings aren't always a) hot, or b) consistently fantastic.  BUT, more significantly, 2) I have gotten food poisoning twice after eating here, and came close to yakking last night (yeah, yeah, I had dinner there; I got honey bbq wings with my friends, which were great; and an order or potato skins, which were bland, cool, and mediocre at best.  Look, if you're going to get a side here, order The Mess).  That is a HUGE reason that the Hanger isn't getting 5 stars, and why I would consider even dropping it down.

I think it says something in that I have been there - albeit just last night, a year later - after getting food poisoning there and puking in the parking lot.  At the same time...  I yakked.  On two separate occasions.   Immediately after eating their food.  No, I wasn't drunk either time.

Wings, Nachos, large selection of beer, takeout if your a student or around the area. Heck yes.

I've been to other Wings over around the MA area and I will always be loyal to the Amherst one.

The inside is a bit small, so sometimes seating can take awhile, but in the end the food is great the waitstaff is friendly and there are TVs all over the place. As long as you aren't expecting a gourmet meal I would happily recommended Hangar to anyone.

The Hangar is the perfect post-race food for a vicious 10 miler (Jones Group Realtors 10 Mile Road Race for you masochists out there) throughout the rolling hills of Amherst.  By rolling hills, I mean "makes Heartbreak Hill look like a wee bump in the road, so 1.5 hours of that made me ready to chomp.

    You can select wings by:
    1) bone or boneless
    2) spiciness level 1-5, e.g., 2 = cruisin altitude, 3 = red alert, 4 = jet fuel
    3) flavors 1-17, including honey barbeque, kickin barbeque, golden barbeque, spicy teriyaki, garlic parmesan, buffalo, lemon pepper, honey lime, cajun, and many more.
    4) size of platter: DC-3 = enough for 1, DC-10 = enough for 2, and so on until you reach Concorde = HUGE and Zeppelin = MASSIVE.

Chomp I did!  Seven of us masochistic runners gathered after the race to devour a Concorde platter of level 3 boneless wings in buffalo, honey barbeque, spicy teriyaki, and cajun.  Mmm!!  I suspect if we ever did a full marathon out here, we'd need the Zeppelin.

The Hangar is a place of magic. I'll parrot what most people have said: Honey BBQ boneless wings. Failing that, teriyaki. Nachos. Beer. The portions are unbelievably huge. And for those of us that love soggy, mushy french fries? You'll never have better.

The atmosphere is really cramped, as they're not working with a lot of room. I don't recommend going on weekend nights, as the place is usually packed with college kids. Don't go during big sports events, either... there's just not elbow room when there's a game on.

Barring that? It's like the church of the god of pub food, and he's a loving god that wants you to wallow in decadence.

Oh The Hangar, how I love you in so many ways.  Amherst was a shell of a town before you came.  Never did I know what I was missing while growing up in a town without your influence.  And then you came.  I was in college and it was the most glorious thing to happen to me before graduating.  Yeah, it was weird sometimes seeing my dad  sitting at the bar, chumming it up with the staff when I rolled in with my college buddies, but it was worth it every time.

The menu is perfect: big and topped nachos (don't worry, you get used to the chili in the place of salsa); the biggest potato skins outside of Idaho; fresh hot, cripsy fries (waffle or crinkle); lots of  cold beers on tap (including a $2-something Huge Coors Light); fresh, tasty sandwich wraps; endless sodas; pool; a jukebox; and that's not even mentioning the wings yet!

Who am I kidding?  We all go there for the wings, but you know it's a good place when you can order anything on the menu with confidence.  The wings are juicy and bigger than the norm (both boneless and on the bone).  One order can have numerous flavored sauces added to it (according to how big it is).  The plates are huge enough to split and still take some home, even if you follow the sizing suggestions.  And the ambiance is a place that I can call home: pub-like with a roll of paper towels on the table.  Hey, it used to be my dad's favorite haunt, guess it was a lot like home for me.  I need to schedule a trip to visit the parents, and by "visit the parents," I mean we will eat at The Hangar.

I have three words for you: "wings, wings, wings!"
Although the boneless wings are not really wings, this place makes sure that you can get a variety of flavors on yours pick from wimpy to the cruising altitude on the hotness scale or be adventurous and go for a honey mustard, or garlic Parmesan wings that will sure satisfy every student's night cravings.

My roommate has Wings on speed-dial.  Enough said.

Definitely definitely get the boneless.  You really can't go wrong with any of the flavors, but I'm partial to the honey bbq, honey mustard, and jamaican jerk.  The buffalo sauce is tasty but I'm too much of a little girl to handle even the wimpy.  The fries are an essential complement to the meal.

The Hangar gets crowded at times, but worth the wait.  Or you can just order for delivery until 2am.

A word on sizes: the DC-3 is usually enough for one person to feel ridiculously full and still have a couple pieces left over.

Wings I will miss you when I leave!

This place is great.  We got the DC-10 "too much for 1, not enough for 2" which let us get 2 different types of sauces (I'm a straight-up buffalo girl, Tim likes terriyaki) -- the wings were awesome and we got a huge plate of great nachos, and I got a huge beer for $2.

    What more could you want?

I miss this place so bad. For some reason, the west coast doesn't know how to make chicken wings taste good.

Actually the traditional wings here are no good- they are meaty- but the skin hangs off soggily-bad news for people like me who enjoy  a crisp wing. But their BONELESS wings are un-f*ing-believable. There are like 25 different flavors to choose from- my favorite is the honey BBQ. Perfect with a good BBC Steel Rail Ale. And the best part is they DELIVER- up to like 3AM. A must see (eat) if you're in the Amherst area.

My sister used to be a vegetarian.  Then she became a vegetarian who ate chicken, but only if it came in the form of boneless wings from the hangar.  And now she's a full fledged carnivore again.

So the moral of the story is beware of those tasty wings that the hangar's dishing out.  They're like the gateway drug of meats.

Also, last time I checked they had Frank Zappa on the jukebox, so bonus points for that.
