Friendly and fast service. Â Nice little salad bar with fresh Ingredients including homegrown cherry tomatoes and homemade croutons. Really good blue cheese dressing. Â I ordered the half rack of ribs. They were tasty with scratch made BBQ sauce. Â Sweet potato fries were awesome! Crispy and cooked perfectly. Â The hubby ordered the ribeye. Â He thought it was tender, almost cooked perfectly but slightly overdone but flavorful. Â Mashed taters were nice too.
All in all a nice surprise for a small town and a little pricey but that's to be expected. Â I'll definitely go back, I'm anxious to try they're breakfast.
In the past, Hindquarter House had a dubious reputation up here on the Divide, but the new ownership has certainly changed things. We WILL be going back! Our dinner was fresh and super YUMMY! The bleu cheese, blackened butter, clam chowder and even the broccoli sides  (just to name a few things) were superb.  The homemade ingredients make the flavors pop and our beef was cooked really nice.  One of the guys in our party had his blackened NY steak cooked well and it was cooked AND still  juicy. The rare meats were superb. The service was attentive and friendly.
Review Source:My fiance and I went for a 4 hour hike not too far from there and on our way outta town to head home we saw this place and thought we would give it a try. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door by the very friendly and helpful bartender. He happily offered us a seat at the bar and asked what he could get for us. We asked for menus and some adult beverages. I ordered a grape vodka red bull which ended up being quite pricey ($15, my only gripe), fiance grabbed an average priced beer. We then ordered two burgers off the menu - one came with fries the other with onion rings. The burgers were amazingly juicy and flavorful, very large patty and "fixins" were on point. We would definitely be regulars there if we lived closer. The fries weren't the greatest but the onion rings were delicious! We will definitely be returning after our next hike.
Review Source:My favorites about the hindquarter house - local grown fruits/vegetables and beef. I like that the owner has considered the quality of products and local economic sustainability.
Beyond that, the beef rocks in taste. My last dinner at the HQ was the prime rib with a side of grilled mixed squash and sweet potato fries. I love that they have sweet potato fries, a mashed/baked sweet potato would be incredilble. Something a bit different to stand out from the rest.
The burgers are a tad overpriced, thus the one less star rating.
Breakfast is awesome (my favorite) and well priced! An omlette serves two adults for our outings. Portion sizes for all meals is great.
The HQ House is my favorite dinning place on the HWY 49 stretch.
The Hindquarters House has become our favorite local restaurant and we eat there at least once a week, frequently twice a week. The prime rib (offered Friday and Saturday nights) is really good and enough for two meals. Their soups are very tasty, particularly the clam chowder. The burgers are really good and the BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato & avocado) is off-the- wall great. I've also tried 2 of the pasta dishes and was not disappointed. So far, other than a chimichanga I didn't care for, the food here has been really good. The place doesn't look like much outside nor inside, but the staff are friendly and attentive.
Review Source:First, the confession - off the beaten path and a coupon got us there. Â
Very low key, but we liked that. Â
It was a hot day and they had cold Sierra Nevada on tap... Â great way to start. Â
The server was great; Â attentive and personable. Â The menu was also comprehensive. Â Food tasty but a little overpriced. Â Salad bar (or bathtub-o-salad) was fresh and had homemade dressings were tasty but a little limited in number of items. Â
Overall, great and we were happy. Â A little overpriced for what we had, but I am kinda cheap that way. Â Give it a try, and you'll enjoy!
Service- 4 stars. Great friendly service provided by John. Â Though there was about a 5 minute delay in getting menus to us, great service was soon redeemed. Â We came during lunch hours and dinner service doesnt officially start til 4pm but we came here specifically for steak all the way from Sacramento as recommended by a friend, so we asked if they had it available. Â He and the chef was able to accommodate us. Â Thank you!
Food: 3.5 stars. Â overall the portions are big. They heavily season their steaks with salt and pepper, too much black pepper and salt for my taste.
12 oz rib eye steak $18.95
12 oz New York steak $15.95
Chicken Marsala $15.95. Â Strong wine taste
Side salad was big and fresh.
Ambience- 3 stars. Â Just a typical roadhouse bar and restaurant joint.
Half the restaurant is a bar and the other half is a small restaurant able to accommodate about 40 people. Casual with stuffed animal decor.
Value: 4 stars. Reasonably priced steaks and chicken for the portion you get.

(I would really give it 4 1/2 stars, but I didn't want to ruin their perfect streak.)
My girlfriend and I went for dinner. Â The place is half-bar, half-restaurant, with a divider between them. Â Since it's only a divider, you can hear everything going on in the bar. Â The night we were there, a drunk & obnoxious woman was holding forth, but we found her entertaining. Â The bar is definitely a country-flavor, both in clientele and music. Â Anyway, we were there for the food.
Before I get to the food, I want to point out that our server (Lisa) is an owner. Â She was more than "nice." Â She was great. Â While we were eating, she overheard me express an interest in one dish (it was a special of the day, but the special board wasn't up when we ordered), and offered to bring me a taste. Â The "taste" was as big as a full entree! Â I'm not saying this because you can count on free meals there; I just want to point out how nice she was to us. Â BTW, she bought the place in the spring of 2011 and is still tweaking the menu, so you should disregard anything negative you might hear from anyone about prior experiences.
Now, the food. Â It was delicious. Â We were starving, so we ordered sweet potato fries to start with. Â I think it was $5.50 (which is high), but it was also a full dinner plate's worth and larger than any order I had gotten before. Â Note: sweet potato fries were not on the menu, but we asked anyway, and sure enough, they had them. Â Since they are still expanding their menu, there might be other things that you can get, too. Â So, if you don't see it, ask before you give up.
We had the Marsala Chicken (excellent!) and another chicken dish which had no name since it was just experimentally cobbled together that day -- but we loved it, too.  It had chicken penne pasta, olives, tomatoes, and more.  With one entrée, we got a chicken tortilla soup, which was absolutely delicious and chock full of huge chunks of white meat chicken and vegetables.  With the other entrée, we got their salad, which was actually an all-you-can-eat salad bar.
We're looking forward to going again to try the Artichoke Chicken Penne, the ribs, and the steaks. Â On weekends, they also have a Roast Prime special. Â (Lisa suggested calling ahead of time to make reservations, since they sell out.) Â They also have fresh seafood specials, but we didn't pay attention because we're not into seafood.
One more comment: we spoke with various locals and everyone of them raved about the food.
So my friend has been living in Pilot Hill for about 10 years, but neither he nor his fiance have eaten there yet. Â It's pretty much the only place to eat or get a drink in a bar in Pilot Hill. Â They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. Â Inside there's a nice bar and dining room. Â They have a pretty comprehensive menu. Â We ended up there around 2:30pm, so we got the lunch menu. Â I had the black and bleu burger with sauteed mushrooms and onions. Â It comes with a huge salad. Â After the salad of fresh greens, a huge burger came out to the table. Â I was thinkin it was a lot of food. Â That burger was yummy in my tummy. Â I could definitely use another burger like that one right now.
The people who run the joint are very friendly and welcoming. Â We were kindly greeted as soon as we stepped in the door. Â The waitress was nice too. Â It's a comfortable place with a comfortable interior. Â Try it out. Â I think you'll enjoy it.
A hole in the wall with exceptional food. (If you're tired of the chain restaurants and a looking for an authentic, good food experience, this is it.)
My family and I decided to go for a drive down Highway 49 and visited Hindquarter House in Pilot Hill. On the outside, it is no great shakes. On the inside it is no great shakes. But when you start to look at the menu, you realize there is a serious commitment to great food going on.
First off, they use fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. The meat is locally raised. Everything is fresh and made from scratch. (When was the last time you had fresh-picked, vine-ripened tomatoes from a salad bar?) All the dressings are freshly made. I had the blue cheese dressing and it was excellent.
They feature steaks, burgers, and ribs, with a few surprises such as Pesto Rosemary Shrimp Kabobs as an appetizer. The portions are very generous. All three of us brought food home.
Dessert was a homemade vanilla bean ice cream with blackberry pie in a gingersnap crust. It was excellent with full, fresh flavors, fresh blackberries, real whipped cream, and homemade ice cream. Best of all, it was not too sweet.
If you're looking for an authentic restaurant that focuses on good, fresh, locally-raised, food in tasty combinations, take a drive to Pilot Hill. We're already planning on taking friends there so they can experience it too.
I moved to Pilot HIll about 2 months ago and I am so glad there is a place in town to eat. Â I was living in a big, big city before. Â Their salad bar is great, homemade potato salad to die for, pasta salad and etc. all good.
The chicken marsala is very good and fresh vegs are done perfect.
I tried a seafood pasta a couple of weeks ago and was amazed to see big shrimp and plenty of it. The owners/mgrs are very, very nice. Â The staff is very friendly also.
