We decided to do a fun little weekend up in Midway and chose the Homestead over the Zermatt (stayed here several times), which owns the Homestead. Â Our room was nice and we paid for an upgrade to the Executive Suite room. Â The rooms are in these small cottages that have like 2-5 rooms per cottage. Â The bad part about this was that it seems they haven't been renovated in a long time. Â You could hear the guests walking around above us and hear their water when they flushed the toilet and especially loud when they ran the tub or shower. Â So that sucked. Â Otherwise, the room was good.
The grounds are really nice. Â Lots of grass, flowers, gardens, ponds, etc. Â So that is nice, but the main facilities seemed to really need an updating. Â The main bathrooms in the lobby, pool areas, etc. were really run down and old. Â Probably haven't been updated since the 80's is my guess. Â Same with the pools. Â Large pools and hot tubs, but seemed like they were the originals and never updated... just patched up here and there as needed. Â
Phone service on AT&T was horrible. Â Edge connection ONLY and the Wifi at the hotel was very very slow and often didn't connect at all in our room. Â If you need to be able to work here or have access to interent, etc. then stay somewhere else. Â It was a problem for me several times.
Overall, it felt authentic... but we probably won't stay here again. Â Was traveling with my family.
We are driving from Berkeley to Boston with a 15.5 year old dog. We were sick of staying in dives on I-80, so we decided to splurge one night, and stay at the Homestead, after reading positive reviews. We drove 1/2 hour out of our way to get there (after driving 600 miles already). Not only does this place owe us our time for the drive, they owe us our money back for blatantly lying to us, and for the entire night of sleep we lost staying in this dump. I reserved a cabin suite. I was charged almost $200 for a cabin suite. What we got was the worst room in the motel - an end unit attached to another room, with disgusting carpeting that had not been cleaned in decades, a refrigerator that buzzed loudly all night, few working lights, a bathtub that did not drain (I won't even talk about the hairs), and a stench that stayed with us for hours after we left. When we complained at check-out, we were told that we didn't get the cabin suite because they didn't allow dogs in there. Turns out we got the one gross room they allowed dogs in. Fair enough. But why, when I reserved the (most expensive) room, and asked a lot of questions about their dog-friendliness, and told them that we were traveling with our dog, and they took my credit card number over the phone and charged me, did they then turn around and put us in the cheapest (grossest, dirtiest) room? This is a sleazy, unethical place. Anything good to say? After complaining, they decided to only charge us for the cheap, crappy room. Too bad they couldn't give us our night's sleep back.
