This place is now a complete joke. The "owner" is a complete moron named William Ashmore, at least that is what he is telling everyone down in Dennisport/Harwhich. Then we find out that the staff says otherwise.
Hey William if you are reading this grow up. Pay your bills. What happen to Paul Yates? This place used to be a great fun place.
Stumbled in here a few weeks ago after a good day at the beach. Got in around 5PM and the rest is history - it's SO FUN. If you're in the area you must go. Only issue was we had a little too much fun and it put us out of commission around 10pm, but hey - worth it! Bud lights in a bathtub, great music, dancing, daylight. It's perfect.
Cash only!
A must-do if you are near Dennis- especially on a Saturday! Â Such a fun, casual, friendly atmosphere. Â I brought my 2 friends with me who had never been to the Cape before. Â We went to the beach before all day long and showed up here around 3ish in our bathinsuits and coverups thinking we would just grab a couple drinks before going home and showering, etc. to go out to dinner. Â We never ended up leaving until last call! Â It didnt even matter what we looked like, as with a lot of the stuffier bars on the Cape. Â It will definitely be a staple every time I go back down there!
Review Source:I didn't think I would like this place. Â I really didn't. I'm not a club person at all. Â But the atmosphere here is different. Â Jim Plunkett does the music and he's pretty great. Â The only weird thing is that the place is run by a bunch of old men. Â Jim Plunkett is one of them. Â The bar tender was nice too. Â It was. A good time.
Review Source:I spent my entire summer at the Improper 2 years ago and it was the best summer of my life. Live music, a dance floor, a dj, generous amounts of alcohol, and the most fun (and sweaty) Happy Hour I've been to!
To this day it's my go-to spot when i'm in Dennisport. But I get the evening started a little earlier since they need to close down early.
My only issue, aside from them closing down early, is paying the cover. I understand it but I don't like it.
We tried to go here last night. Some stupid lady who lives next door complained about noise and now the bar has to shut down at 10:00.
Why would you move next to a bar? Yeah it should make the value of your house lower but that should affect the closing time of the bar.
I hate america sometimes.
This place makes me feel old when a glance around should really just make me feel very, very good about myself and my choices in life.
First of all, there is usually a cover charge. I hate paying cover charges. Especially for cover bands. But the cover band is synonymous with Cape Cod nightlife so goodbye $5-10.
Secondly, there is a $20 minimum to use your card. I know this shouldn't be tough to do even with their cheap drinks, but what an annoyance! Bring cash.
Now on to the experience...
The bar is divided into two floors. Upstairs has a barn kind of feel, downstairs feels like someone's basement. Neither are very inviting if you are not: a) drunk, b) a lover of 80's/90's cover bands and/or c) looking to be surrounded by either of the former.
Even on slower nights, the bartenders are busy enough shuffling around on their own agendas behind the bar that they will ignore you for a few minutes. Slug down a few reasonably-priced drinks if you haven't already (before entering the bar). I also suggest getting really good at not breaking the seal. The bathrooms here are atrocious. The bathroom door not only lacked a lock, but only came up to my neck. What fun having to hold the door in place with my head while I hovered holding my drink, phone and purse in that tiny stall. Ick.
The music upstairs precludes any casual conversation with friends. Prepare to yell. A lot. At least the Improper makes no pretension about being a "kick back with friends" type of place. Oh no. This is a "pound your drinks and scream along to the music" type of place.
Downstairs we happened upon a very depressing open-mic night. It may not have been so bad if the room wasn't so akin to a dungeon. Concrete, metal and dark colors abound. Work with that shizz! The whole high school band practice in a basement thing sprung to mind. A solitary guy sang to no audience until my friends took over and a few others trickled in. So glad we paid a cover to provide the entertainment.
The Improper would be a grand destination if I were 19 or 20, single and had developed an affinity for average cover bands..oh! and was already trashed when entering. As a 26 year old, not so much.
Definitely a good choice of a night out on the Cape. Live music upstairs, dance floor and DJ downstairs. Enough room to wander around, but not look like you are a moron.
There was no cover the first night I went ($10 another night) and $3 gin-and-tonics both nights! A definite win right there.
Dive Dive Dive right into happy hour here at the Improper! Â If you are searching for a last call type of atmosphere at 3:00 PM head to Happy Hour at the Improper. Â You will prob want to have a few casual ones before walking into this crowd especially if Jimmy Plunket is on the mic. Â This is definitely a good after beach spot to hit up to start off your night on the cape.
Review Source:This is pretty much what a cape bar should be. Solid live music in a very cap coddy atmosphere. The outside patio setup is a solid addition, and the drinks are solid (gotta go for something summer-ish here, no guinness or winter drinks).
If you're on the cape, gotta check the bostonian.
