This is a very good Mexican restaurant. This was our first time there. We were a party of 3 (2 adults, 1 child - 10) on Saturday 7.13.13. We arrived about 5:15 pm and they were not very busy yet (but were very busy by the time we finished a little after 6). Their menu is extensive with all the basic Mexican dishes that most folks look for in a Mexican restaurant. I had the enchilada trio which was very good and my wife had a spinich enchilada which she said was very good (I tried it and it was). My son is not into Mexican food (yet) so opted for grllled cheese and fries and he enjoyed that too. All the dished were well prepared and presented steaming hot as served. As pretty full as we were we splurged and all got desserts - brownie sundie, flan, and cheesecake tortilla. All were really delicious. Service was very good - even after they got busy, checking on us often if we needed anything. We would return to Ixtapa in Groton and recommend to others.
Review Source:Bland food. Â Watery salsa. Â Good guac but that was also watery. Â I had the Ixtapa Burrito and found it to be bland. Â The rice was partly cooked and was hard.
The restaurant was really loud. Â It was not this loud when it wsa the Beef and Ale years ago ... i think its due to the abundance of tile on the walls and floors. Â The makeover was superficial - the old booths and tables are still there - our booth table was stained and spotted from years of use ... bleh,
Overall, meh.
Distinctly unremarkable and bland mexican food. Â I had Enchiladas Mazatlan and husband had...can't remember, might have been fish tacos. Â Good job with the decor but they have tried to crowd too many seats into the space. Â Husband & I had a booth and we could just barely fit into it, and we are not big people. Tables & chairs along the middle of the restaurant are so closely spaced that it might as well be one long table. Â Was very busy for a Sunday supper. Â An indication that there are so few dining choices in the area. Â Also very noisy as its a small space with all hard surfaces.
Review Source:My husband and I stopped by this place on a whim yesterday afternoon. Â We were greeted warmly by staff. The restaurant is small and very clean (including the bathrooms) Â with 1/2 of it devoted to the bar/lounge. That's where all the action was - all the stools were full with patrons who appeared to be having a good time, watching the several flat screen TVs and talking amongst themselves. Â Their tequila selection is limited, but still broad, from your basic Jose Cuervo to Herradura Anejo. The bartender measured my tequila pours for my margaritas, but free poured my husband's Captain. Unlimited tortilla chips and salsa - warm and fresh chips and very tasty, mild spicy salsa. Â We ordered the queso dip, too, and It was a bit runny, bland. It could have used more body and flavor. Â The patrons were friendly and easy to strike up conversation. Â Our servers were attentive and gracious. Â A very BIG plus for me were the menu items designated Gluten Free, as I have Celiac Disease. Â I'll definitely try one of the meals next time and will update my review on GF service. All in all a pleasant way to kill an hour or so on Saturday afternoon while running errands. Â We'll be back!
Review Source:We've been to Ixtapa in Lexington and Lunenburg so we knew what to expect. Â Didn't get much more than that, but lord knows I've spent more for worse.
Chile Verde was okay, but a bit bland. Â My wife had enchilada which also underwhelmed. Â The Chile con Queso was likewise bland. Â Wife had the house margarita, then the next one up on the menu. Â Extra 2$ well spent.
We'll go back. I'm sure, but not often...
Let me first say I am very particular about my Mexican food having had Mexican food all over the southwest and had my doubts about a Mexican restaurant in the 'burbs. Â However I was extremely pleased and surprised at the authenticity and quality of the food. Â The complimentary chips were warm and crispy and are accompanied by the traditional salsa which is served in a shaker jar so you can take just the amount you want. Â I ordered my favorite which was the Enchiladas Suizas with chicken. These are topped with a green tomatillo sauce. Â The refried beans were nicely seasoned and the rice, although nothing out of the ordinary, was tasty. The plate comes heated and the food piping hot.
The prices are on the high side for enchiladas but the portion was huge and you get your moneys worth.
The menu is extensive with lots of selections and you can even order a burger if someone in your group is not a Mexican food fan.
The decor is fresh with a wonderful Mexican flair and there is a huge long bar. Â The wait staff was efficient and cheerful. Â I cant wait to return!
Got take out the other night (I usually never get Mexican take out as it never travels well). I got the 3-way combo of 2 x rellenos and an Ixtapa burrito. The burrito was good but the relleno tasted reheated. The relleno was wrapped in a flour tortilla, which was new to me. The cheese had some resistance to it when i bit into it, so it was either reheated or they put a cheese stick into the chile...either way I didn't enjoy it that much.
Overall...I could have given them 2 stars...but they just opened not long ago & could be working out the growing pains new places encounter. Still looking forward to my return trip.
I found this place to be a little bland and slightly over priced for what you get.
Ambiance: The place was nicely decorated and well lit. The building itself is not that nice but a vast improvement over the last place that was there. Very clean and well kept. The new owners did a nice job turning the previous dive into something pretty nice.
Service: The service was quick and friendly. Our server was very prompt in refilling our drinks and checking on us. No complaints at all with the service.
Food: Ok so this is where the place needs a bit of help. We found the food to be frankly a little bland. There wasn't much in the way of seasoning or spice on any of the food. I had the fish tacos and they were pretty tasteless (nothing like the fish tacos I used to get in LA). The fish was mushy, the tortillas were store bought (I'm pretty sure), and the beans were a bit runny. The chips they brought around tasted a little old (not sure if they were homemade or not) and the salsa was a little bland. My wife had a burrito and it also suffered from a lack of flavor. If the food had been great the prices would be justified but $13 for bland fish tacos isn't going to bring me back.
I really hope this place survives because Groton really needs a few more good restaurants.
Like always I'm not a basher so my email is below if the owners or mgmt. would like to chat further.

Just opened. It's been crazy busy at the restaurant...but have been there twice in a few days. I know - We have problems. Haha. Great food. I had two different things and so did my girlfriend and we were pleased with both. We ate at the bar twice. Met a great bartender in Tony - super friendly and knows what service is! Â We had fun and chatted it up with some other Groton residents. Being new to the town it was nice to meet friendly people.
Since we can hit it with a rock from our house (sort of) we will be there a lot! More restaurants and bars in Groton please :).
Just fantastic, exactly as good as their other locations, even when the place is a total mad house (which it has been, since it's only been open two nights so far!) Â The space is a bit tight, and noisy, and they could do without the massive televisions in the bar, but WOW what a great place for casual food in Groton, MA.
