    One of the best hot dog stands around!  You have to get 'mild sauce' on your fries.  Its somewhere between bbq and the sweet and sour sauce at chinese restaurants.  There's no place to sit down and eat, so I usually just lean against the building in the shade.  There's a lot of birds, so if you drop any fries, you will be attacked.  The sport peppers are hotter here than most Chicago hot dog stands.

    The gold-standard of The Depot is thus necessarily replaced by the platinum-standard of Jim's Original.

    Arguments regarding originality notwithstanding, Jim's is simply the most superior "Maxwell St" option in the context of pure flavor (-- though it merits repetition that The Depot is still great, and hence the forthcoming comparison).

    In most salient categories, Jim's - despite my bias, anterior to visiting, against an establishment claiming to be the provenance of such a fine culinary style as "Maxwell St" - appears to eclipse its competition:

    (a) the fries were a crispier, ruddy golden-brown, yet still nicely moist in their interior;

    (b) the polish-sausage was a dark pinkish-red, slightly charred, and tremendously more flavorful than the (still quite good) dark grey-brown polishes of Depot and places of similar ilk (and, for that matter, most purveyors of polishes in the city);

    (c) the grilled onions retained less grease but more flavor than I've found customary, which more than compensated for the slight mustard deficit relative to the (or at least my) polish ideal;

    (d) apparently - according to my two companions - the cheeseburgers were likewise incredible, though I shall return to ascertain their quality for myself.

    The original Original currently rests on Union Street in the Loop, and empirical desideratum may now dictate pilgrimage to University Village.  As it stands, however, the satellite location at 95th Street and the Dan Ryan (just 500 feet east of the Red-Line terminus) is more than worth the journey -- especially since it offers the al fresco dining option of scenic Abbott Park.

    Great greasy spoon-style food in the Maxwell Street assembly-line tradition. Quick as you can order a pork chop sandwich, a delicious polish sausage or a chicken sandwich, its in a warm bag framed by yummy fries yearning to touch your tongue and waterfall into your belly. Boy does this make riding the CTA at the 95th Street Station much more tolerable especially after the latest round of service cuts.  By comparison, a nearby McDonalds can't make a meal as fast or happy as the men at Jim's can. It's amazing that I've used this station for years but waited this long to taste this Chicago delight.
