Joel's has been a popular destination for good food & drinks for years. But recently the service and food seems inconsistent. The carousel is gone, but the building clearly needs some major updating. Very little air movement in the dining room, furniture is outdated, food is mediocre at best. With all the business from Turning Stone Casino, the owners need to spend some money. Dinner prices are over-priced for the entrees that are not 3 or 4-star meals.
Review Source:We were looking for a place for sandwiches on our way home from the Adirondacks, and didn't want a chain restaurant. Joel's fit the bill. From the fiberglass cows outside, to the clunky pine furniture, to the decor using wagon wheels as dividers, this place was unique.
The service was good and the food was adequate. I would not go out of my way to stop again, but if I were driving by and it was meal time, I would not hesitate to stop.
Barely adequate is how I would describe this place. The kid's meals were better than any of the steaks. Food is poorly prepared at best. The staff, though friendly, was slow and forgetful.
The location is quirky, but poorly maintained. There is little or no AC which is a problem during a heat wave.
All in all a poor experience. I would not repeat.
If you want a "view", forget it. Joel's is a bit dark inside. You can't miss the outside with the longhorn steer! There are all kinds of memorabilia displayed, including carousel horses. But put that all aside. The food has been very good over a 7 year period that we've been going there. This is a total steak/rib/pork kinda place. Don't even think about cholesterol, or portions (which are sooooooooooo big). The rib-eye with Jack Daniels sauce is to die for. And if you think calamari is like Fleer's Double Bubble, try theirs! Not rubbery at all! And the marinara sauce is actually excellent! Now to the "skinny" - you have to ask for Tom, a Scotsman with an incredible voice, as your server. He is so fun, and also knows the menu backward and forward. He will attend to every request (I like mayonaise, A'La Belge with my fries - no problem!) Now he doesn't even ask! The mayo just appears! I have a hard time giving 5 stars to any restaurant in CNY (except for the Horned Dorset in Leonardsville, and La Petite Maison in Waterville) so I would give Joel's a 4.5 if they allowed 1/2 points.
Review Source:What a strange little hole-in-the-wall! Â I went here with my boyfriend on the night before Valentine's Day, so we expected it would be packed. Â It was, but they did have an available tiny table on the carousel near the bar area, and we were happy with that.
Despite being busy, our server was very attentive. Â We ordered the calamari for an appetizer. Â Based on the decor, I didn't expect much from the food (wagon wheels between two pieces of Plexiglas serve as windows), but I was pleasantly surprised. Â The calamari was tender and not chewy like I expected. Â The salad came with mini breadsticks that I couldn't resist. Â We both ordered the chicken parmigiana. Â The portions were huge! Â The chicken was cooked perfectly and the marinara sauce was delicious, although I felt the dish could have had a bit more marinara for the pasta and a little less cheese.
We skipped dessert because we were so full, but we had a great experience overall. Â I will be back the next time I'm at Turning Stone!
