We randomly stopped in here on a Friday night.
Definitely has a dive bar feel, but the bartender was friendly as was the owner. We were probably more dressed for a martini bar, but no one even gave us a second look. Most of the other patrons looked like punks or bikers, but everyone was really friendly.
We had a really great time hanging out and chatting up other patrons and downing PBRs. Definitely a fun spot if you're looking for a casual spot. I hear they have a lot of live music there too.
We will surely return!
The only place to find real people working hard to make music and do something real with the dismal opportunities here in Medford. It's not a sit-around bar, it's a venue-bar. If I still lived here I'd frequent John's.
Bad Food
Warm Beer
Loose Women
Great Music, sometimes.
Lyss T. and Wayne P. are right about Johnny B's, but so is Ellis A.
This is the saddest bar I've ever stepped foot in. At least the creepy local pubs in small towns have some kind of historic character. This place is cheap.
Though rockabilly isn't my thing, the "crowd" is less than friendly to people just coming in for a drink or to listen to music. I'll agree that it has some interesting bands coming through, but all in all it's pretty stereotypical for a "rockabilly" bar.
The decor is atrocious, the drinks are weak and overpriced, and the venue is small and grubby.
Medford isn't known for its diversity. Johnny's is the one very unique place in the town for live music other than cover bands. I've had a few tasty sandwiches there but the main draw isn't the food, it's the music and the crowd of regulars. Johnny gets in some great touring bands as well as supporting the local scene. From Punk to bluegrass to rockabilly to blues or even jazz there is always something different ever night and at least once week you can hear a band you know or will like if you have tastes that go beyond just top 40 radio.
Review Source:This is the best live music venue in Southern Oregon. The venue is very intimate which allows you to hang out and have drinks with the band. Bands from all over play here. I recently saw Six Gun Romeo from Canada who were on their US tour. The owner Johnnie B took the stage and jammed with the band for several songs. Six Gun Romeo played a great show and were a blast to hang out with in-between sets. Johnnie B and Chris are excellence hosts and genuinely friendly. A local told me Johnnie B's has the best cheese fries on earth so I put them to the test. The local was right. Props for the Lagunitas IPA on tap and great crowd as well. If your heading north or south on I5 and stopping in Medford, I highly recommend the live music, food & drinks at the hippest bar in the Rogue Valley.
Review Source:First off, i need to say that this review is biased, as Johnny B is an outstanding guy that always treats us well, as people and as a band. Â i love the feel of the place, and the decor. Â Great food, cheap drinks, PBR on tap, (which is the best place to have it, besides in my tummy). Â There is a small, established stage, with its own sound equipment. Â Johnny plays upright bass himself, so he knew what kind of sound ours needed- what a freakin' relief. Â In fact, he is a true musician, so there wasn't much fumbling to get the proper levels. Â The place is a wonderful kind of cozy. Â Business side, the payout is directly related to how many people pay at the door and attend the show.
But, we try to make Johnny's a stop no matter what- he's good people.
The one and only rockin hotspot in the midst of a gaggle of lame bars and clubs in Medford OR. Â Live bands nearly every night of the week, from local bands to old skool punk bands to well know Rockabilly groups, make Johnny B's is the place to go for live music and great people.
The bands and musicians that Johnny B is able to bring to our tiny little neck of the woods is outstanding! Â Nowhere else in Southern Oregon (and sometimes Oregon in general) can you see the bands that Johnny B has booked. Â I've seen kick ass bands like MDC, Lower Class Brats, Chop Tops, 2 Live Crew, Big John Bates, G.G. Elvis and many, many more!!
THAT was a tasty burger. Good fries. A "special" dipping sauce for the fries. Several good beers on tap, plus a full bar. Proper feeding and watering of a band will produce the best results.
Ruh Roh... forgot to do your hair? They sell palmade at the bar, with some really funny shirts to go with.
Good sound for the folks listening. Ok sound for the band -- two monitors that never quite got our vocals at a volume that we were comfortable with, so our drummer was nervous about getting lost and me and Phil both strained our throats singing. Good thing we brought a telescoping mike stand, as the only one the house had was busted.
However... the owner of the place, Mr. Johnny B. himself, did the sound. And when he wasn't at the sound booth, he was right up in front jamming and dancing and cheering and singing along. THAT'S REALLY COOL. You know, then, that it sounds good out there.
Really nice that there was a door right next to the stage we could load in and out of.
Pool table / smoking room to the side; it was sealed with clear plastic tarps, so the smokers could watch the show but the smoke barely creeped into the main room (it did a little, and I felt it in my throat while I was singing, but it beat the hell out of forcing smokers outside where they can't listen or watch!)
What was really cool about this place, though, was its crowd. They were calling their friends to come down, they were drinking with us, they were singing along and having a great time. We sold some merchandise, we hung out and talked afterwards, we moshed with them while the Misfats played. Just a nice, relaxed, fun loving crowd with a great sense of humor.
