Went on a Sunday. So it's an odd place, had creepy, pissed off looking biker guys starring and everyone in the outside seating area. And so, if your a punk, which i pretty much am, you'll love the motif. which is, I found cool shit to nail to the wall, and everyone, please feel free to add your own art ^_^
Pretty much u order your drink, get a free pizza, and you seat yourself.
But of course, like a dummy, I could not figure out why everyone took all the seating towards the front. I then realized why, for some reason, further back, around the bathrooms, the area i was sitting wit mah crew, smelled like barf and/or dirty diapers.
I dunno, maybe someone forgot to clean.
Well whatever, I wanted a beer, they were good, but then I won a free shot and ordered vodka and coke and tasted like rubbing alcohol. I don't wanna be sexist to my own gender, but the guy who was serving me, gave me the best drinks! The lady bartenders, not so much.
So yeah, don't trust a pretty face to serve you a good drink
Pizzas are good, OH! and they gots skeet ball, pretty fun for a dollar, and about 20 seconds.....you gotta feed the machine in order to keep playing, no free rounds for high score.
Oh! and they had bar trivia, which i lost at -_-
I was gunna give this 3 stars, but I feel bad because it used to be such an awesome spot. Now, going on a Friday or Saturday is a waste of time. So damn crowded. However, the music is the biggest change to me. I felt like it used to be all sing alongs that we all grew up on in the 90's and early 2000's. Now its like they have z100 playing. Â Free pizza is dope if it doesn't take you an hour.
Review Source:We work nearby and decided to try out this place on a weekday evening. Boy, it felt like a weekend to me! Great music and ambience, $5 beers and coupons for a free plain pizza with every drink! The pizzas are freshly made in front of you, and add a dollar for every topping you want. Very friendly bouncer and bartender and even the pizza guy. They were doing a breast cancer awareness thing when we went and my cousin was happy with the pink beads she got & the perfect cocktail. Overall, fabulous end to a tiring work day, I would love to come here often!
Review Source:Keep in mind that this is a review for a one-time visit on a Friday night.
....It. Was. Fucking. Packed.
I mean, it was so packed that I could barely walk from the front door to the bar. Â I was with a group of 5 or 6 and we had a hard time navigating the crowds. Â We did eventually find a spot for all of us to hang out, but we would send one person at a time to the bar because you could NOT walk comfortably through the venue. Â If someone is full on groping my boob and I cannot see WHO IT IS, that is a problem. Â I don't know why it was so crowded, but I don't think I'd go back to find out.
Free omelette with a drink purchase on Sundays? $3 mimosas and bloody Marys? Yes please! Fun, campy bar with great food/drink specials (including free pizza), a huge jug of free candy and skeeball machines downstairs. It looks like they have a ton of cool events like speed dating, drag contests and weekly skeeball tournaments. If we lived closer, I'd definitely make this a regular spot!
Review Source:Free pizza with a drink beverage and free omelet's on the weekend's - you had me at hello; what an eccentric and legendary place, definitely has the Asbury Park atmosphere going for it and I'm soakin it in; the pizza guy has turnover (we miss Manuel) but the pies come out hot, cheesy and delicious considering their free; a good place to get grab a pint of Guinness and read the writings on the walls and chat with friends or loved ones
Review Source:It's been a while since I've done a bar scene. This particular one was pretty good actually. Very lively, the dj spun a very eclectic variety of music which I actually enjoyed.
It was a Sat night and it felt like a lady's choice night...so many guys for each girl it seemed...the staff from the bouncers, bartenders and bar backs were cool and they actual had a decent bottle of scotch so I can't complain. Bartenders were really on it so you didn't wait a long time to get your drink either. Location works because there us plenty of parking both in their lot as well as  on the street. Free pizza in the back, skeeball machines downstairs, fun time for all.
Definitely one of my favorite bars. This place has the most "personality" of any I've been to. You can't beat free pizza when you purchase a drink, and they even have skee ball. Doesn't get much better than that. The outside bar is perfect for the warmer months and allows for a bit of an escape from the loud music and crowd if you want. I always have a great time at Johnny Mac's.
Review Source:This BAR gets 5 stars. The name of the bar is the "house of spirits." If you came here to eat, you A. Walked into the wrong place by accident B. are really cheap and came in for free pizza or C. You were misinformed.
This is an awesome bar. Great beer choices, wonderful bartenders, and guess what, free pizza.
Oh and one more thing. Skee Ball in the basement.
Love this place. Super cool blonde bartender (who chases Weird NJ legends/places like we do) with drink specials and free pizza! Skeeball in the basement and random discoveries thrown about.
Yes it is true, free pizza with beer purchase =) and the pizza is really good. Â About a 12" pie, thin crust that goes well with a pint. Â This is the kind of place you could spend all day hanging out in. Â We have been twice, and had a great time on both occasions. Â Officially one of our Asbury Park fun spots.
Well we read all the reviews and were very excited to try it out. Â Pulled up and it looked pretty cool, we walk in and are immediately greeted w "IDs" .. I looked around at the scarcely filled restaurant/bar... like where did we just walk into. Â My bf gives him the ID and I go to give mine and the bafoon/bouncer/male host WHATEVER goes as rudely as humanly possible yea dont need to see yours. . Idk if its because I'm a woman but I have never been so offended walking into a restaurant. . He then just walks away and chats w the bartender. . As new patrons. . We were just like ugh ok lets walk around and figure out what we are supposed to do w ourselves.. few minutes looking around at the bartenders.. noticing there are sittings areas but no cocktail servers... or really service of any kind.. any empty spot was littered with trash and empty glassware. . I have never experienced a place that lacked service like this one.. it was quite baffling honestly. The bafoon at the door we thought was some random patron.. and then found out nope hes just hired to turn you completely off.. we go out constantly. . You couldn't pay me to step foot in this place.. guarantee the only patrons were regulars which is great until you want to pay your bills.. if you're looking for new clientele .. good luck! Â They will probably do exactly what we did.. run the hell outta there! Spent $100+ for 2 ppl ( we like to have a good time =P ) ELSEWHERE. Will not be back unless I want to kick the bafoon in the nads and go.
Oh and if I could I'd give it a -5 stars I would just for the ID comment alone.
Went to Johnny Mac last night for the first time and I LOVED it. Â The decor is quirky and the atmosphere inside has a great vibe. Â Drinks were cheap and the pizza is free...yes free....and it's pretty good. Â There are multiple levels, lots of little nooks to sit in, skeeball machines, an outside area, free parking lot, and a stove full of candy. Â Not to mention we went there after Zombie Walk so the place was crawling with funny characters. Â The staff was on the pretentious side and I wish they had a better set up for the bathrooms...only 2 for the ladies and one downstairs for the men...but the lazy guys who didn't want to go downstairs would just use the ladies room....kinda gross. Â But the venue itself and the value for what you get definitely makes up for it. Â I will definitely be going back!
Review Source:After a day of frolicking on the beach in Belmar, I got on the Parkway and it was bumper to bumper traffic! Â Fortunately, I got off the Asbury Park exit and waited it out at Johnny Mac. Â For a Sunday night in August, it wasn't packed but it is a large space.
A couple helpful hints: parking in the adjacent lot is FREE. Â I paid an hour of parking then moved my car. Â SAVE YOUR DOLLAR! Â Coupons are for free pizza that are pretty good. Â The quotes on the walls, tables, etc are dying to be photographed and placed on all types of social networks. Â There is a life size mannequin in the woman's bathroom that I imagine after a few rounds may make someone jump. Â
I had a great time! Â Such a cool place!
I only spent a short amount of time in here one night last year, so that's why it isn't five star rating.
Where else in the world are you going to find a bar that as two fully operational ski ball machines (which causes them to have weekly tournaments for prizes), free pizzas with every beer and trivia written on the walls? Yes, I know that you can probably find a bar like this in NYC, but it probably wouldn't be as awesome as it is in Asbury Park.
Johnny Mac's is pretty much half way between a traditional Irish pub and a straight up dive bar. The crowd isn't like the crowd you would find at the Pressroom or Brickwall, these people know how to have fun. It's a little off the beaten path, on Main Street instead of Cookman, but it's well worth it to go and find it.
If this place was in long beach I'd be an overweight alcoholic skee ball master.
Its quirky, oddly decorated and has so many little funky signs and stuff all around. Â When you order a drink...you get a free pan pizza. Â And it doesn't taste like crap, surprisingly enough. Â They have different theme nights, and seems to attract an interesting crowd.
The mannequin in the bathroom is spook-tastic, but hey....whatev.
A nice establishment with great decor. Strong drinks and a fun environment. Free pizza is always a plus but bartenders forgot to hand me a ticket each time I bought one of my six drinks. Only gets ThReE stars because the bouncers Literally bring the bar down two stars. The hillbilly biker bouncer by the outside portion of the bar needs a life lesson in how to talk to people. Insulting and rude
.
This place was awesome! Â Was here for the first time last night and can't believe that I haven't visited this place sooner! Â Absolutely love the laid back feel and the crazy decor. Â The kind of zany feel to the place just puts a smile on your face from the minute you walk in. Â Plus, they have skee-ball....seriously, SKEE-BALL!! Â Who has skee-ball in a bar?! Â Great prices for drinks and the pizza's pretty good. Â Was here with a large group of pirates on a bike tour, so our visit was relatively short lived, but I will definitely be back to take some more time here!
Review Source:Cheap Beer. Free Pizza. Great Staff. Skee-ball. Outside Smoking Area. A parking lot. What more can you ask for in Asbury? Great place, the FREE pizza is actually REALLY tasty. They have woodchuck on tap, get it  with a shot of Jameson in it, free pizza and some quarters for ske-eball... you have your self a night for 15 bucks MAX..... great time.... thank you for  opening.
Review Source:Cheap beer and free pizza are the obvious reasons for three of the stars. The fourth is for the quirky charm of the place - the quotes and random questions written all over the walls; the answers to the questions scattered elsewhere on the walls; the strange and interesting curios hanging everywhere; the free candy in the old-school iron oven... This place has tons of charm and none of the pretense.
Review Source:This bar is awesome! The drinks are really cheap (especially for Asbury) and you can request a ticket that gives you a personal size pizza for free with the drink. Theres a skeeball located downstairs, and a lot of interesting distracting decorations throughout the bar. It has a divey feel to it without being too hipster. Would completely recommend if you're looking for a great atmosphere with a group of friends without a huge line or duschiness.
Review Source:This was a completely unintentional visit, but a welcome one. We were originally heading to the Asbury Park boardwalk for lunch, but when we saw the exterior of Johnny Mac's, we drove around the block to came back to check it out. After coming in the side entrance, we took a seat at the front bar and ordered a draft ($4). Beer selection was decent; nothing too fancy, but workable.
As we sat there talking we couldn't help but be pleasantly distracted by the eclectic decor; random trivia questions and popular quotes written on the brick columns, a TV behind a mirror above the bar, checkerboards and musical instruments hanging on the wall and even a model train track suspended from the ceiling. The random theme continues even into the restrooms (photo).
Another eyebrow raiser was when I noticed the "free personal pizza with any drink purchase" frying pan on the wall. Yep, free pizza. They also have free omelets during Sunday morning brunch. We didn't partake in the pizza deal, but I think it's a cool and unique idea, even if it's the only food they have.
Very cool bar with a lot of character. Nicely done, JM.
After 3 or so months of good times, I'm done with this place.
My friends and I are quiet customers who had been regular Monday night customers over the last few months. Skeeball, pizza, take-in sushi, zombie walk, and quite a few drinks. This all came to an end last night.
After a long day, my significant other and our friend were heading to J Mac's and invited me to go along, a request I was happy to oblige under the pretense that I would not be drinking (at least not until my headache went away).
Fast forward: 30 minutes and one glass later I asked for a second water. This time I was ignored for a good 5 minutes as the tender known as Joe severed everyone else in the virtually empty bar. When he returned to me he asked for my ID and walked away to the DJ behind me. Working in quite a few bars in my "career" I was instantly taken back. When he returned he asked me in an aggressive and rude tone "Are you going to spending any money tonight" to which I replied "You don't have to (expletive) talk to me like that." He readdressed me sharply saying "If I'm going to play rock and roll bingo I have to buy a drink in order to win prizes"
It turns out my lady friend and our female friend (who never drinks and the bartender knows it) had gotten all of us cards for Rock and Roll Bingo while he was ignoring my request for water.
If I had been presented with this predicament in a polite or even respectful manner, I would have declined to play or just gotten a drink that seemed palatable to sip on and moved on with my night. Anyway I responded with "I didn't even ask for the card, and I come here every Monday Night" It was this point that he went through the motions of throwing me out. I responded with "(expletive) you" and he threw my ID that he was still holding across the bar with a smug look on his face.
Nothing like getting thrown out of a bar in front of two people you hadn't seen since High School, while completely sober. After this, I'm happy to take my business and cast of characters to the much more charming Bond St. Bar as well as The Brickwall Tavern in case we're hungry.
How awesome is it that they turned the tragic old Tap House into such a cool bar? This is my Go To bar whenever I'm back in Asbury Park. A great place to be able to sit down and have a conversation with friends, in a fun atmosphere.
I seem to always end up here on Christmas Eve.... so, if you need to escape the stress of Christmas and relatives, Johnny Mac will be open and ready to help you out! :-)
Thanks to the free pizza and candy, Johnny Mac is the perfect place to start or end an Asbury bar crawl. Missed dinner and don't want drink on an empty stomach? Free pizza. Getting late and want to sober up before heading home? Free pizza.
Sure, they don't have any other food except for assorted candy (also free) Â but the beer selection is very decent and pizza with beer is a no-brainer. If you're looking for cheap eats and drinks with a fun, casual atmosphere, Johnny Macs is a very good bet.
Also: SKEE BALL! Not free though, so save your quarters.
A fun place to go with a group of people. Â The skee ball in the basement can't be beat, and they have a nice tap selection. Â Also - free candy by the front bar! Â This made the recent trip here even sweeter (pun intended). Â
A great addition to the Asbury Park bar scene. Â Reminiscent of a bar in the village vis a vis Jekyll and Hyde's.
I don't get this place - I mean the decor. It reminds me of old-school Fridays, but on crack and acid. The whole place is just covered wall-to-wall with trinkets - some people say it's cool, for me it screams "FAKE!". Seems very artificially vintage to me. The writings on the wall want you to think they've been there forever, when in reality they're just a year old.
Beer selection is pretty decent and priced right. The layout is a little awkward. Their pizza is good but that's literally all they serve in terms of food. Still, the place draws a friendly crowd and the bartenders are great. It's a good place to go if you're in the mood for pizza and beer.
-Great concept- this is what Asbury needs
-5$ bar pies (free with alcohol purchase during 7 day happy hour)
-Great selection of beers, reasonably priced.
-Skeeball in basement is nice touch
-Lots to look at on the walls and in bathrooms.
-You have to be 23 or 24 to get in which keeps all the children out for now.
-Friendly bar and door staff. Â
Local bar owners should take a hint from these guys- they have a great thing going on and that is why Johnny Macs is on point.
Free (quality!) pizza with drink purchase everyday 12-7! Â Best deal in New Jersey as far as I'm concerned.
They have a lot of beers on tap too so it's not like you're getting a Budweiser and an Ellio's pizza.
The place is big and has a lot of trivia on the wall. Â There are 4 skee ball lanes in the bottom floor which is very cool. Â
Got some TVs to check out the game and the crowd is very mixed. Â
You have to be 23 to get in.
Bars with a wide selection of good beers are few and far between. Especially on the Jersey Shore where sophistication is not something one runs into on a daily basis.
The bar offers a very substantial bar pie that is pretty much big enough for two people. It's obvious that a great deal of money was spent decorating the bar and I'm sure that you'll notice something new each time you visit.
There are plenty of big screen TVs to watch your favorite team.
This could be a good second home for the beer and pizza lover.
Awesome awesome place. Â
BYO (non-pizza) food
A fishtank table
A potbellied stove
Beyond random furniture
The most random little stuff on the walls
and. . . 25cent Skeeball. Â
And oh yeah, it's a bar.
Opened around the beginning of August, this place looks like it took a crew of 8 a month to put together. Â It's almost too much random stuff, but it works. Â Good draft beers (Brooklyn, Harp, Palm, Doc's Apple Cider etc) for $5 and pretty good mixed drinks per others. Â Jukebox music and big plasmas. Â
And of course, it's Asbury Park, right off of Cookman. Â Just a great vibe, great spot, cheap bar pies ($5 +$1/topping), large outdoor sitting area on the sidewalk, and just good people. Â Definitely give it a shot, with this, Bond St Bar and Brickwall there is a decent bar district developing on Cookman, I strongly suggest you give it a shot.
And yes, 25cent skeeball lanes (hint-the right one is better). Â Pretty damn awesome.
Talk about funky - This place has more eye candy than you can care to think about. Trying to be a real Irish bar they are all about the booze. Â As a matter of fact the one and only food item that you can order here is a bar pie.
Did you ever hear of a BYO food joint, well that's exactly what they are and they invite you to bring your own food if you don't care for pizza. Â But, if you do be sure to bring your own silverware as Johnny does not provide any.
Great assortment of beers and spirits along with a very comfortable bar - this place will soon become the new HOT spot and darling of the Asbury Park bar scene for sure. Â Run by a family out of Brooklyn NY, this is their 17th beer joint in the NYC area. Â Give them a shot ... and while your at it give yourself one too.
