Was looking for some seafood for lunch today, and decided to drop in. Â We go here a few times a year for seafood and really good fries and onion rings. Â
They have changed the french fries to some random, not very good fast food style. Â Very disappointing. Â The fries used to be a real highlight here. Â Â I had the clam strip roll, and that was fine, but the fries were just meh. Â Â My son had the super chicken sandwich, and that was okay. Â Good, not great. Â Lunch for two was $27 -- which is fine, if the food is high quality, but this was just average. Â I don't know if this is the same owners, but everything just seemed a bit off.
Decent enough place.  The food, eh, it's just mediocre.  Salads are very good, but if you're stopping in for a quick burger beware.  The regular burgers are mystery meat and for $6.99, it comes with nothing else but the burger.  Seriously, pick up a box of Bubba Burgers at Target, throw in a handful of fries for heaven sakes, and you would do better Johnson's.  They do offer a Black Angus burger, if you want to experience a real burger at Johnson's.  But  I feel all the burgers on the menu should be "real" meat.  Don't you?  I've never been for breakfast, so I'm not sure of the "cheap" status quoted by other reviews, but typically, I find most things on the menu overpriced for what you get.
It's such a fun, nostalgic place, it would be great if the food was up to par.
We stopped here for ice cream - nice treat on a hot day. Â I ordered the black raspberry chocolate chip - I found a small amount of chocolate ice cream in the cup. Â Perhaps the ice cream scoops aren't rinsed after each use. Â Not a huge deal - I hate chocolate ice cream so I ate around it. Â Just something to keep in mind for any food allergies.
Review Source:It's safe to say this place is in my blood. My family has been going here since before I was born.
Cheap breakfast food, frappes, other stuff. I'd dock them for still using styro. But memories of meals with my grandparents, meals after theatre productions, and after church breakfasts. And that ridiculous merry-go-round-rusted-death-trap that used to be up on the hill.
No, this place is never going to win any awards for innovation. But those lacquered and shellacked tables, benches, and walls...man.
Okay. Johnson's is getting a three because it has cheap, good breakfast deals. Lunch  is just too expensive.
Johnson's has a pretty cool atmosphere, walk up to the counter, order your food, pay for it and sit down. One of the nice waitress will bring you the food to your table. Other than that the food for lunch and dinner is pretty much run of the mill fried food. One thing they have on their menu that is unique is a Pepper Ring, much like an onion ring except made with a pepper. Defiantly something that you will have to try out.
Breakfast is another story at Johnsons, the food is awesome! Also, if you are in a hurry you can call them up and have breakfast ready to go by the time you get there. good eggs, pancakes, french toast...everything...
Groton wouldn't be the same without Johnson's. Â It's been around for as long as I can remember and hopefully things will stay that way. Â The food is A-OK, but the Ice Cream has always been the allure of this family owned restaurant. Â Growing up I would often mow down on smurf ice cream (blue ice cream & marshmellows) and spin around way too fast on whatever the hell it was they had by the picnic tables for ten years. Â I IMPLORE YOU, OWNERS AND OPERATORS OF JOHNSON'S DRIVE-IN, BRING BACK SMURF ICE CREAM!!!!
Review Source:Don't go here for fried clams. Â They are terrible. Â Their fried clams are over-cooked, stiff, tasteless and un-chewable. Fried clams are done when they float and should be removed from the Fryolator not a moment later. Johnson's does better with fried fish. Â
The tasteless aspect was made worse by the sugary tartar sauce. Â If we can go to a rib joint and get a choice of mild or hot BBQ sauce, why don't seafood places give a choice of traditional, savory tartar sauce or the sweetened type? Note that the service is prompt, attentive and friendly.
I LOVE Johnson's. Â It is my favorite place to get ice cream and seafood on the cheap. Â The seafood here is always great. I also love the giant Greek salad and the Giant vegetarian sub. The portions are HUGE. My husband and i usually share a clam strip plate it's so big. The ice cream is homemade on premises and you can tell the difference. A previous reviewer got ice crystals in her scoop, however I have had ice cream here literally 50 times and never had that problem, of course I order pretty popular flavors (oreo, pb cup). Â It is my favorite ice cream place in the area, and there are a lot of them in Central Mass, and this is the only one I've found with homemade ice cream. (Of course I've never been to Kimball's which would prob rival it) The service isn't always the best as it is all teenagers and townies, but it's good enough considering the style of the restaurant.
Review Source:The clams are really that good. Â The other food is pretty good too. Â They toast their burger and dog rolls - most of the time - I guess it depends on which cook is on that day. Â Toasted rolls = bonus if you can get them. Â It's better, I'm just sayin'. Â I'm glad Johnson's is always open as there aren't many fast food joints around these parts. Â Go there!
Review Source:I mostly go here for ice cream and have found it to be good but never amazing. Also be aware that kiddies are actually tiny here and you should order a small if you want more than a single scoop. The food is pretty good and I enjoy the burgers. I don't eat seafood but everyone I have gone with raves about the fried clams so if your into that I'm sure they are worth a try. The seating areas both inside and outside are great places to enjoy your ice cream/food in.
Review Source:Best fried clams between Maine and the Cape. I know that sounds strange, but it's true! A friend mentioned to me that their clams were good and he knew I was originally from Maine. I gave him my best skeptical look when he told me that. But later I gave them a try and was very impressed with the quality, taste, price and portion size. Another time, we were there for a quick ice cream for my daughter and there was a couple across from us and the guy was finishing off a plate of fried clams. As he licked his fingers he said " Worth the 70 mile drive from Rhode Island." This couple drove all the way from R.I. just for the fried clams! See, I told you they're great.
Their lunch/dinner specials are also worth checking out, as I had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich recently that was full of  tender and tasty BBQ pork and was just plain terrific. French fries and onion rings are average though.
I recommend this as a good casual local lunch spot, especially during warmer months, as you can sit outside in the shade on picnic tables. The ice cream is their own and home made with plenty of flavors. Though the ice cream may not be as great as Kimballs' in Westford, it's fresh and a good value. I find the girls that take and bring you your order are very friendly, polite and well trained. You can't go wrong with Johnsons on a warm spring afternoon. 4 **** A'yuh!
I don't really get the love-fest about this place. Â The ice cream isn't great. Â Well, I don't dig ice crystals. Â And they apparently don't know how to make a black and white frappe, as my sweetie keeps having to explain it.
I've ordered lunch here, and it was pretty dirty, which isn't a great thing. Â Plus, for a sandwich, it was pretty expensive.
Not a lotta love from me, in general.
Amendment: Â True to form, right after posting this, I was out riding with a friend, and we ended up eating here. Â Had a foot long, and it was pretty good.
Great place to bring the kids for a burger, dog, or fried chicken or seafood...lunch or dinner. Very friendly staff. Good ice cream. Take-out windows. Very low prices. That said, Johnsons is a weird place. You order at the counter, and the waitresses bring food to you, why not just have waitress service? Â The walls are all shiny wood paneling which looks greasy at first, but are not. The breakfasts are bad, served on styrofoam, and the eggs are dry and overcooked. Very brightly lit. The tables tend to be dirty due to this take-out/waitress hybrid issue.
But overall, I like it.
