I love Kroghs!
As a South Jersey native, discovering places in North Jersey to look forward to is exciting for me. My boyfriend is from Sussex Co. so a trip to Krough's is necessary for every visit, basically.
I have tried multiple menu items and I absolutely loved the veggie pizza they offer. On top of super cheesey dough are lightly grilled veggies that were soft with a little crunch, they were perfectly done.
As far as drinks go, they offer beers made in-house, which I cannot wait to try. It's the martinis however, that make my mouth water. Now, I don't normally drink hard liquor, I'm a full-on wine nerd who loves beer, but Krough's basil and mint cucumber martini is TO DIE FOR. It is perfect. I kid you not, it was one of the best mixed drinks I've ever had.
They were also kind enough to make it for me out of season.
I can't wait to go back.
Went on a Saturday night, and was told it was a 25 minute wait. We sat at the bar instead, and the service was fantastic! Â Everyone was so attentive. Â The burgers were great, and the seasonal beer was excellent. Â Watched a wedding from the window - great view. Â Good music. Â Would love to sit outside next time!
Review Source:One of the better brewpub's in NJ and maybe one of the coolest looking bars I've ever been to.
Right on lake Mohawk, Krogh's is like an old german cavern inside. Although I'm not a local, it's definitely a "Cheers" kind of bar in that a large portion of the patrons seem to know each other and the staff.
Anyways, on to the important stuff. They have some really great beers. They have about 6 that are always on tap, and a seasonal that they rotate in and out. We happened upon the ESB seasonal, and it was one of the best beer of theirs I've ever had. The Oatmeal Stout, which is always on tap, ranks up there as well.
I've only eaten there twice but the rarebit sauce is tasty and the nachos are awesome.
I went on a Friday at 5 with my wife and son. While it was very busy we were still warmly greeted and quickly seated. The place has a dated feel, but once you settle in you realize there's a comfortable warmth they shouldn't change . Our server arrived immediately and walked us through the specials for the adults and recommendations for the young one. I should mention the service and knowledge of the menu was exceptional. I ordered their house seasonal IPA, which easily holds its own with a Dogfish Head 60 minute. The menu is more extensive then expected, but c'mon when you find yourself in a great brewpub you've got to order pub food! The nachos were outstanding and a generous portion even though we ordered the small. We ended up ordering 2 burgers cooked medium rare and one well done. As is our custom we cut them in half and were pleasantly surprised to find all 3 cooked correctly. The burgers were very good, the french fries were great. There's so many more beers to sample and food to try, there's no question I'll be back.
Review Source:Great atmosphere and good food. My husband is a fan of the brews too but since I've been pregnant each time we've been there I can't year comment on those. We like the nachos, fajitas, burgers, and salads. Friendly staff as well. We went in the day we signed the contract on our new home and when the waitress heard we were new to Sparta she gave us a warm welcome and a bottle of champagne. Definitely recommend Kroghs!
Review Source:As a Lake Mohawk resident of nigh thirteen years Krogh's is sort of near and dear, but with enduring reservations. The big draw is the brew pub. The red ale is robust with a clean finish; the lager "Krogh's Gold" has a light bite while refreshing; the pale ale is duly hoppy with a slightly bitter finish; the brown ale has depth; and the stout enjoyable with chocolate notes and a bitter finish.
The atmosphere is very warm and inviting. Dating back over eighty years. Krogh's was originally constructed from timber from what would become Lake Mohawk.
Service is very professional though not warm. After thirteen years of steady patronage the bartenders and wait staff still welcome me as "Sir," as if I am setting foot in the place for the very first time. No biggie, just thought I'd mention it.
Onto the menu. On the plus side, all entrees come with a cup of soup, salad and warm dinner rolls. The menu itself is uninspired and favors simple bar fare. The food itself is passable though thoroughly underwhelming.
They used to have some good bands pass through (Marty Balin, Richie Havens, The Strawbs) but now, with the exception of the sublime Java, Weekend nights are devoted to colllege kids downing Jaeger shots while some schlocky cover band plods their way through yet another rendition of "Sister Christian."
I'm not entirely sure why this place has such great reviews, because the standards in this area tend to be higher. Their beer is mediocre at best. If you like bud light, you'll probably enjoy it, but if you're any kind of a craft beer fan then it will likely be some of the worst you've ever had. The atmosphere is kind of crappy and they are super stingy with buy backs, but it's kind of a standard hang out and definitely in a beautiful location. Their only redeeming qualities are that they have one PHENOMENAL waitress who could run the place herself, and the nachos and their house creamy garlic dressing are to die for. I still go from time to time because it's walking distance, but I wouldn't recommend the place to a friend.
Review Source:Stopped by here with a friend before heading to Jefferson for a weekend of camping. We ordered a small Krogh's Famous Nachos El Grande as a starter and had Oktoberfest pints. Even though we ordered the small, it was LOTS of food - awesome! Additionally, my friend told the waiter we like our stuff hot and that the cook should try to impress us. Well, think he had a bottle of some hot sauce from home or something that was added to the dish as it definitely had a kick (in a good way!). The full rack of ribs was unavailable, bummer, as I wanted to really try this. Instead we ordered the short ribs with potatoes and everything. Ate half of the dish and saved the rest for lunch the next day. The meat was seriously better tasting than half of the upscale steakhouses I have tried in NYC. It even tasted great the next day being microwaved (yes, sacrilege I know). Really excellent dining experience.
Finally, the owner of Krogh's was one of maybe 5 to ever respond to one of my yelp reviews. This means quite a bit to the dedication to quality of an establishment. I provided additional honest feedback and the owner made up for my last negative bar experience by sending me a gift card. I am impressed.
Hit this restaurant about every other year usually year or so. Â Food is always pretty good. Â Usually get the Chicken Murphy which they always do a nice job on. Â The microbrews are what set it apart from other area places. Â The location is pretty as you're right at the corner of Lake Mohawk. Â What prevents this from being a very good restaurant are things nfortunately can't really be improved upon much. Â Price (in line with the area but still too pricey for non-fine dining- use a http://restaurant.com GC if you can), size (place is a bit cramped where you sometimes feel like you're stepping over people to get around) and parking (just not enough spaces at night and weekends). Â A good comparison would be Barley Creek in the Poconos- same type of food, serves microbrews but no parking issues or cramped feel. Â The pluses and minuses make this a 3 star place. Â With that said it's still one of the better restaurants in the Sparta area. Â Go during non-peak hours if possible.
Review Source:have never had bad experience here. Â the decor is charming and cozy and the staff is always very pleasant and friendly and remember us every time we come back. Â on the occasions that i've been, the crowd seems to be pretty mellow: Â no obnoxious young party-types. Â a good mix of couples, friends, and families. Â the food is excellent and very fairly priced. Â i highly recommend this place to anyone looking for an enjoyable night out for dinner and good craft beer.
Review Source:All I can say is Wings, Wings, Wings! The microbrews are alright--not the best I've ever had but palatable. I always get the sampler--it's the best value oz for oz and I always like having a little bit of everything better than having a lot of one thing.
The wings are excellent, and a great value on Tuesdays (wing night).
It's a bit of a small place and you can get crowded out of the bar on busier nights (it's a little annoying that you must be at the bar to get the wing deal when it's so tiny). But overall I like the long history of the building, the log cabin charm, and the unique plaques garnishing most of the inner walls (an employee told me these used to be awarded for spending certain amounts of money here until the practice had to be discontinued because of some BS law against incenting people to boozery!)
This review is based on Brews only. The pint scale is 0-5 of how many pints I could drink in one evening.
3 sisters golden wheat- bright and crisp with slight hoppy bitterness 3 pints. With a dash of raspberry syrup it goes up to 4 pints. The syrup added a nice tartness.
Kroghs gold- standard lager 3 pints but nothing special.
Brogden meadow pale ale- typical ipa 1 pint
Alpine glow red ale- warm nutty flavor 4 pints
Log cabin nut brown- slightly bitter porter 2 pints
Old krogh oatmeal stout- smooth, creamy toasted oatmeal flavor. 4 pints
Pumpkin spice- not your typical pumpkin beer. Aroma of nutmeg and cinnamon but not overly present on the pallet. 2 pints.
Another time where I wish I could give a place three and a half stars.
Their stout is really fantastic; its got legs and a ton of complexity. But all of their other usual beers are just meh. Their seasonals can be hit or miss--their bock was very tasty but their Oktoberfest is...just ok.
Very good broad menu and yes, the nachos are tasty. Very solid veggie burger.
Parking definitely sucks, so just keep that in mind. You'll probably need to park at the lot a few blocks away. It's also kind of tricky to get in and out of downtown so definitely make sure you're sober enough to drive when you leave.
Good pub. Â They brew their own beer, so if you are not experimental with different beers, you may want to think twice. Â I happen to like most of their beers. Â Food is good. Â The menu a bit quirky. Â You would have to be a real food snob to be disappointed. Â Check it out! Â Parking is a pain unless they have the valet working.
Review Source:Wish this place was closer to me, it would be a regular hang out!
Knew the name already from the various beer events around the state. Â Saw it on that restaurant coupon certificate website and went for it. Â Visited with a good buddy of mine on my birthday in March.
Busy with plenty of buzz inside. Â Nice large bar area with a restaurant seating area on the opposite side. Â Wood everywhere. Â I enjoyed the feel.
Several beer choices I asked the bartender what the standard was for the house half & half and it depends on the bartender. Â I tried it 2 different ways and they were both fine. Â None of the beers wowed me but they are perfect for a local haunt.
Menu is diverse, made me wonder what their specialty is - can't do everything well, right? Â Ordered wings as an appetizer. Â They were OK. Â My main was the sirloin. Â Again, OK. Â When it comes to steak I want to taste the meat. Â Simple flavor when it's not BBQ'd. Â This one was grilled to medium doneness like I had asked but the flavor was 80% charcoal grill. Â I wanted it to taste "cleaner". Â I can't remember what my buddy got - think it was rack of lamb. Â He liked it.
Our waitress was great - fun and professional. Â I ordered chocolate cake to treat myself on my birthday and when she heard it was on the house. Â What a nice surprise.
Overall, Krogh's is a great local place with solid food and beer. Â Staff is just as solid, fun and professional. Â The owners care because I heard from them after using the web coupon - which the place accepted without issue. Â I will be back again this summer to enjoy the lake and a nice slow afternoon.
The best thing about Kroghs is the charming exterior and the carved solid wood doors. Â Inside, it's often stuffy and even when there aren't crowds of people, the tables and chairs crammed in make it feel crowded. Â There is definitely a loyal following and I've always gone in wanting to like it and have it live up to its reputation as a local institution, but the food has always been *almost* good, just missing the mark in one way or another. Â Combined with the prices, it's not on my list of places to eat, though I do like to drive visitors by it for the bit of character it adds to the Plaza area.
Review Source:I am a huge fan of Kroghs! Â My boyfriend I love coming here for the beer and the food. Â The staff is always friendly and the food is always great. Â The beer isn't phenomenal but it is pretty good. Â Their rarebit sauce is great!! Â
Great place to come for lunch or dinner. Â When you go, try the beer sampler to see what you like. Â They do have a few different types and they are all pretty good. Â I recommend the burgers or grilled chicken sandwiches. Â Ask for a side of the rarebit sauce....and thank me later.
I went there with a group of people to try the beer they brew there. Â So we started with the sampler that gave us each of their 7 beers. Â There was nothing special about any of the beer. Â They were all just "okay".
The nachos supreme were also okay. Â Nothing special.
Cool decor though.
First the beer - as a beer connoisseur, the 3 beers I had all were marginal to bad. Â The Red was weak and flavorless, the seasonal Belgian was one of the worst belgians i'd ever had, and the Wheat beer was just ok. Â I've had much much better brewpub beers at Trap Rock, Harvest Moon, JJ Bitings, and a bunch of other places.
Next the food - the french onion soup was okay, my roast beef openface sandwich was marginal at best, and the bar's famous Rarebit cheese sauce was made with powdered cheese (or at least tasted like it). Â I love pub fare and often get it, so I'd rank this in my bottom 25%. Â The apple dessert was okay, tasted a bit fake. Â
The place itself is very nice with a beautiful atmosphere, and Sparta itself is very cute, but for me to drive 35 minutes from Morristown I'd need much much better food and/or beer; even the http://Restaurant.com coupon didn't make it worth it.
Great location by Lake Mohawk. Â Cozy, wooden cabin feel. Â Great selection of food and brews. Â A bit pricy, but thats what you can do when you do not have too much competition in the area. Â Good place to meet up with friends and a nice, friendly staff. I'd definitely recommend their delicious burgers or taco salad with one of their home-brewed beers. I love the Oatmeal Stout!
Review Source:This place just so happens to be a favorite hideaway for my husband and I. Such a cozy little building with good menu and beer options. I know this will sound bizarre, but I also really love the salads in those brown wooden bowls. Will have to go back sometime for dinner when they have live music and see what it's like then.
Review Source:We love this place, especially the rustic log cabin atmosphere. Great place during the fall and winter when the fireplace is stoked up. The service is quick, competent, and friendly. Â We generally stick with the pub menu (even use it for take-out). Â The food is basic and well executed. Â It is best place in Sparta for a quick reliable meal.
Review Source:I've lived in Lake Mohawk for 15 years and am quite famiiar with Kroghs. It's always been ok...the bartenders are fine but the food has had it's moments....some good and some really not so good. I stick to pub fare because I can't take a chance that say, the salmon dinner would be any good for the price you pay. It is kind of pricey but the atmosphere is great and it's right across from the lake so you can tie up your boat and go over for a cocktail.
Review Source:Good local brewpub. I'm probably inflating the rating a little because I'm fond of brewpubs in general, and they're in short supply around here. That said, you can't go wrong with the taco salad, the enchiladas, or the nachos. Their beer is reliably good, if not the kind of excellent microbrew you'd find more readily in other regions of the country; if you find their brews are not to your taste, the full bar will serve you any other kind of drink you might have in mind .
The location is great. It gets crowded on Friday and Saturday evenings. The crowding is worsened by their insistence on using Krogh's as a music venue, a purpose for which the building is spectacularly ill-suited. Parking can also be tough.
What an amazing brewpub!
Before stepping foot into Krogh's I felt as if I was in a different country from the Tudor style homes and shops lining the street next to Mohawk Lake. Once inside, you really get a sense that this place has been here forever! And it has. This place has been around since 1927 before the lake was even there.
I'm giving Krogh's 5 stars for a few reasons. First of all they offer such a unique atmosphere and comfortable feeling for hanging out and enjoying one of their handcrafted beers. There was a great crowd on the Friday night that I had gone. All of the tables and chairs were made of wood and were fire-stamped with the Krogh's logo, which I thought was very cool.
The menu was pretty standard, nothing really jumps out at you as something different to try. Also, most of the entrees seemed to be a little overpriced for what they were. The one thing that sort of jumped out that was different, and is also what I ordered, was the Krogh's Rarebit Special. This was an open-faced sandwich with turkey, tomato, bacon, and Welsh Rarebit sauce (which is cheddar sauce made with beer). The sandwich was full of flavor and definitely hit the spot. What caught my attention due to it's size and smell from across the room was the nacho platter. Holy moly! This plate was stacked high and looked like a meal in itself. I'll be ordering that next time.
The main reason why my friends and I had taken the trip to Krogh's was for the beer. Anyplace can brew a decent lager so I decided to try the Alpine Glow Red Ale, the Log Cabin Nut Brown, and finally the Old Krogh Oatmeal Stout. The red was very smooth and was full of flavor, one of the better red ale's I have had from NJ brewpubs/breweries. The Nut brown was also full of flavor, a great beer but not distinctive from other nut browns I've had. The Oatmeal Stout was excellent. Probably my favorite beer of the night. This beer has a slight texture to it that coats your mouth and gives a silky smooth and rich flavor. Perfect beer to end the night.
Too bad I didn't live in the area because this place looks like one of the best hangouts around. I would make a trip back when the weather is a little warmer and I can walk around the area, check out a few of the other shops and restaurants, and enjoy the lake.
I would recommend Krogh's to anyone who loves trying new places and who loves craft beer.
Hope the review was helpful, now go and enjoy a craft beer!

The food is mediocre and the beer is downright bad. I hate to be so harsh because I love seeing places brew their own beer and try something new especially local places keeping the scene going in North West Jersey but this place just falls flat for me. I went with a friend for his birthday and we each got a sampler and some nachos and the sampler was mediocre, it has been a while but I believe there were 6 beers and only 1 stood out. That was the Meadow Pale Ale. Maybe if you stick to that and the Oatmeal Stout which is supposedly good (seemed bland for an Oatmeal to me) you will have a better experience. As for the nachos they were servicable but left something to be desired.
Review Source:The location across from the Lake is great. Â The decor inside and out is fabulously rustic. Â A great place to enjoy a couple of martinis, a salad, and a steak--all at the bar of course. Â A cozy bar for all seasons. Â This restaurant/pub atmosphere is one not easily duplicated. Â They've got it all.
Review Source:Krogh's should get 4 stars based on Nachos and Beer alone. Actually it's exactly what I'm basing my score on. Â
It's tough for me to review this place because I practically grew up here. It was our place to hangout, play in the open mic night, and listen to townies play their music. As far as a hangout, it's the best. The log cabin setting across the street from the Lake Mohawk boardwalk is second to none in this town.
The food is good. not amazing, not anything new, just good. Sometimes even very good. There was a time there when I think they overreached and tried to be something they weren't, but I am pretty sure that time has passed. They now do what they do best, give fresh, hearty meals, at a reasonable price.
Now the beer. Krogh's is one of the best craft breweries in the state. Â They just churn out fantastic seasonal beer and then they have their 5 or 6 staple beers. If you go there, have beer. Please.
You can't go wrong here.
