I remember this building when it was an old-timey hardware and variety store called Fenstermachers, with wood floors that creaked as you walked along. Now there is brewery equipment in the front that results in a decent selection of beers, though not edgy choices. Â In the fall, the pumpkin ale is nice, but light. Â The wine is from the local Vynecrest winery, and my pear-y Chardonnay was perfectly fine. Â
Nothing special on the food menu EXCEPT the fluffy soft giant pretzels, fresh baked with a delicious creamy mustard. It's worth going here for these along, and they are quite good with a beer. Â
The place is huge and nicely renovated with an open feel, plenty of brick, cute booths, a parking lot in the back, and different areas for hanging out. It is probably the nicest restaurant in a town where there are few upscale offerings (nothing against the town, but it is geared toward college students).
I LOVE THEIR DRINKS!
I am not a big drinker, a total lightweight and I don't like the taste of alcohol. Â While stating that, the Tavern has THE BEST mixed drinks I have ever had! Â I even go as far as to try and recreate them at home (with near success)! Â Their food is also pretty good, but I mostly enjoy the drinks :D
Oh and my husband enjoys their beers.
This restaurant holds a special place in heart, my (now husband) and I met at Shortys and had our first date at the Kuztown Tavern, although we graduated a few years ago we still like to visit. Â We planned an afternoon lunch date a few weeks back and sadly it will be the last time we ever visit the restaurant. Â We had terrible service from our waitress, I couldn't have been more disappointed with our food and service. Â Food was lackluster, we ordered a panini for $10 dollars and split it and it wasn't any special, the buffalo egg rolls were good but that is all that can be said. Â We received the wrong bill and the waitress acted like it was our fault, just tossed the new bill on the table. Â This establishment has gone down hill since we lived in town. Â I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone, go to Basin Street, they have much better food for a better price and good service!
Review Source:Went to KU for 4 years and this is where I went when I had some extra cash. Â Their beers are pretty pricey but that's the nature of the beast at a micro-brewery. Â Love all of their brews (minus stoudts because I just cant' handle the thickness) and their soft pretzels are AWESOME! Â It comes with home made mustard which is also pretty good. Â I was here for the USA/CAN olympic hockey game that went into overtime (Thanks to Parise) and the atmosphere was awesome. Â I like how they have pretzels at the bar (it's the small things, right?) . Â The decor is pretty cool and I like how the vats & duct work are exposed. Â Service is never really a problem since I'm usually enjoying a beer & watching some sort of sporting event. Â Can hardly notice the time, so it could be quick or really slow, wouldn't know.
Review Source:Beers are ranked on a pint scale 0-5 of how many pints I could drink in a sitting.
A brewery that seems to do their beers right. No frills or pretentiousness.
Blonde Lager similar to amstel light. Light crisp refreshing flavorful. 5 pints.
Youngallens Lager: Lager with a subtle honey finish. 4 pints.
Dinner weis: unfiltered wheat with nice but not tart lemon flavor. 4 pints.
Old brick alt: tastes like a porter looks like an amber. Slightly smokey finish. 3 pints.
Blueberry seasonal ale: like a blueberry muffin meets beer. Not sweet at all. 4 pints.
Onyx cream stout: standard stout. Similar to Guinness. 3 pints.
Bourbon stout: vanilla bourbon flavor. Smooth and not heavy. 5 pints.
I can't review the food. I only had the appetizer sampler which was good.
Good place to stop and have a microbrew. Try the Pumpkin ale or Oktoberfest seasonal brews.
While I can recommend stopping at the bar, I cannot recommend the restaurant. I have had a number of bad experiences with the serving staff and the food is nothing special. If you do decide to eat here, try the soft pretzels with stone ground mustard. They are the best thing on the menu.
As Elmer Fudd would say: "Be veey veey caaaful!" - With my husband and myself and another couple, we shimmied in a cozy booth. I had always taken visiting friends to the tavern, as I thought, most of the food was pretty good. Then - one night:
I ordered some kind of chicken sandwich, when it arrived, I tasted it, as I thought, man, this tastes like turkey. I had my friends sample the meat as well and we all agreed. I said something to the waiter, please check, I think I got turkey, not chicken. (Please know, as a former waitress, I try very hard to be kind to wait staff - they are normally overworked and under paid). He told me no, he was sure it was chicken. I asked him to send it back, that I was not satisified. Surprise! The kitchen manager/cook came out to further tell me it was chicken, as I ordered, and I said, no, I am sending it back, please re-make it, I did not want turkey. So she disappears again - then the friggin OWNER comes out. He actually starts yelling at me! Something like, "This IS chicken, we have the chicken in one place, and the turkey in another, and this is definately chicken!" I said, fine, I don't want it, maybe I could order something else? At which point he really starts in, actually leaning over the table and yelling in my face that, and I quote, "I have had a hard day! I know whats in the kitchen! Things aare going bad for me, and then you come in and say the chicken is turkey!" Spittle flying, yelling. I do not respond well to confrontation. I order something else (Yeah, I was still hungry!) and send back the chiurkey, or whatever it was. THEN when the check comes, its not removed from the check!!! Wha....? I of course, refused to pay for it, and only pay for what I actually ended up with on my second order....What a way to treat customers!! Haven't been back since....
My wife and I came out for our anniversary and after a bit of pub crawling ended up here. Â I've stopped in for drinks and appetizers before but this is the first time I had dinner. Â The food was excellent. Â I ordered the garlic/mushroom flat iron steak which was prepared exactly to my specifications (I'm amazed at how many "steakhouses" can't even produce a med/rare steak properly). Â My lovely wife got the scallops and was quite pleased--she's an even bigger critic than me. Â The broccoli was crisp and bright green and well seasoned-not dull and limp as if it went from the freezer straight to the steam table. Â As for the garlic mashed potatoes--well what can I say, I just had the leftovers for breakfast. Â Our server, Andy, was attentive and professional (I should've given him a bigger tip but times are tough, sorry Andy). Â The place is a bit bright and loud but then so am I. Â Prices are a bit high for a local spot; $76.00 for 2 drinks, 2 entrees and an appetizer isn't outrageous but more than what I was expecting. Â We will def. be back.
PS:avoid Shorty's downstairs--poor service and dishonest bartenders who will rob you blind.
Stopped by for lunch. In short, service was excellent and a large place. Â Had the spinach salad which was very fresh. Â Disappointed in the grilled shrimp as if they were grilled, they did not show it. Â Looked more like boiled in simple water and as such, tasteless.
I would recommend as it is a great place to hang out.
Best beer in town along with some fine tavern faire..Things I recommend include the soft pretzel app and the Donner Weiss beer, which is a European Wheat beer brewed right in Kutztown, PA.
Depending upon the seating, it can be pretty noisy if you have a family of 5 or greater. Â
Great TV's at the bar for watching any of the Philadelphia sporting events while sucking down some of their delicious brews.
The Tavern is the only slightly upscale eatery in Kutztown. When it opened it was a big deal to finally have a place like this in Kutztown, unfortunately for locals we've slowly watch prices rise and service and quality just slightly decrease. Still, there aren't many other local places that have food like this. From what I've heard the beer is underwhelming, but I won't judge without having tried it myself. I love the Pagoda Salad (Chinese salad) and the crab cake burger on a pretzel bun. The fries are called dutch fries and they are pretty good too. If you have the want, get a big pretzel before hand with the mustard they have. Both are amazing and worth the artery clogging goodness. I like the setting of this place too, I don't know what it is, but it's fun and built well. It's too bad things went just a bit downhill, but still there aren't other places in town like this.
Review Source:Apparently, one cannot make go of a brewpub without having Miller Lite and Yuengling on tap. Tried a few of the micro beers, the Alt brick was my preference but I really did not care for the others. I really wish all bars would stop with the frosted pints, or at least offer non frosted glassware for those of us that know how beer should be served. Also the beer was served way too cold.
Can't comment on the food since I did not have any.
I go to this place virtually EVERY TIME I am in Kutztown, and have yet to be disappointed. Â The Golden Avalanche Brewery beer is not my favorite, but the food makes up for it.
Everytime I have come here I have tried something new and always am pleased. Â This past visit I tried the sauerkraut and sausage platter and it was wonderful. Â I also enjoy the corn fritters as an appetizer. Â
It can be VERY packed at times, but is definitely an enjoyable experience that anyone in Kutztown should try at least once.
Two of my friends from the West Coast recently took jobs in Kutztown and moved to the downtown area just off Rt 222, so I decided to welcome to the East Coast by taking them out to dinner. They found an apartment the day before, so they were obviously not ready for guests. Â I looked up about five restaurants on Yelp and they chose the Kutztown Tavern based upon what they had heard about it in town. We ordered the corn fritters as an APP and they were very good; my friends ordered seasonal beers and liked them, and we all had different dinners. The Tavern is a beautiful, rustic-looking sort of building on the outside with plenty of parking in the rear of the building. The inside of the tavern is spacious and quite modern looking. The food is moderately priced and reasonable. One of my firiends had a pretzel pizza which is unique and made out of pretzel dough. My other friend ordered a chicken pasta dish and she also loved hers. She took half of it home in a doggie bag. Â I ordered a jumbo scallop dinner, and I wasn't disappointed at all. If I am in the area again, I will go back.
Review Source:Good food. BUT I have a big problem with their seating arrangements.
I have been in this restaurant about 5 times. 3 with my boyfriend/friends, 2 with family + boyfriend.
CAN I BOLD THIS!!?? It seems if you are or look like a college student they shove you away in the corner.
If you are or with any person over 35, they give you a nice table.
I really have a problem with this. Do not stereotype me!! I am a paying customer, but maybe not for long!! I watched this every time I was there, any college students who came in got seated by the bathrooms....and families in the center of the room...etc...
I've wanted to head out to the Kutztown Tavern for quite a while after hearing some positive things about it from friends. So we took a little field trip over to Kutztown and entered a very brightly lit, spacious bar. There's a convenient little 6 pack shop under the same namesake attached to the left as you enter that has quite a selection of beers as well as a take out menu. The bar was practically empty, but given the time of year (June), the local college kids were probably all gone for the summer, but I hear it can get very busy during the school year.
Their beer, brewed by the Golden Avalanche Brewing Company, is solid for the most part. I didn't care much for their Donner Weiss and the brick alt was a bit too floral for my taste buds. However, both their onyx cream and bourbon stouts were quite good. The Young Allen lager was also palate pleasing and well balanced.
The food was a bit meh in general. It is typical pub grub but with a much larger variety. There also seems to be a pretzel theme going on interestingly enough. The wings were standard but the seafood alt bisque was surprisingly tasty. Meal portions are alarmingly large and not in the good way. My friend's cowboy burger was passable and came with a monstrous serving of fries. My bacon cheeseburger meatloaf was massive but sadly devoid of any flavor.
Service was friendly and efficient but there were only a handful of patrons at the bar overall. Prices are very reasonable. The Tavern is not a bad place to check out if you ever find yourself in this remote area.
I've been here many times and love it! First off, it's a beautiful, rustic-looking sort of building on the inside -- makes you feel like you should be more dressed up once you're inside, but then you look around and mostly everyone is wearing casual attire.
The food is great and moderately priced. As a vegetarian, I can only vouch for their selection in that area, but I've had nothing but good experiences. I especially like the pretzel pizzas -- very unique pizzas made out of pretzel dough. And I'll second/third the others on the soft pretzels with mustard appetizer. Delicious!
I haven't been there in a while and I'm suprised to hear that they don't serve the different varieties of bread with their meals anymore. What a shame! I don't think it's worth taking off a star, though.
i believe i was one of the first to work as the take out guy. Â You know that guy, who looked so miserable on a Saturday night, watching his friends, hot women, getting sauced with indescribable envy.
I would watch the Karate Kid in Spanish, day in and day out, only to open the doors at 11am to find this old guy with his 5.30 for his twelve pack of Meister Brau. Â Dude, I could never understand a fucking word you said, Â but i was marveled by your drinking skills.
I'm giving the Kutztown Tavern the benefit of the doubt with 4 starts, because I love the place and still stop in every time I'm in Kutztown. The soft pretzels make the place. Try the turkey melt. I took off a star because they stopped serving bread and butter with their meals. If you remember the bread and butter, you know why it's worth a whole star: different flavors every time.
I'm tempted to take off another star to punish the place for their micro brew, the unfortunately named Golden Avalanche Brewery. Their beers range the spectrum and they always have a seasonal for you to try. As micro brews go, these beers are just not that good. They get to keep a star for the Bourbon Stout, though, which is one of the best beers I've ever tasted in my life. Drinking the Bourbon Stout is like drinking a Hershey Bar that will get your drunk! Try it!
One of the best restaurants in Kutztown, which isn't saying TOO much, since it's in the middle of nowhere - seriously.
As other yelp-ers have mentioned, it's worth a visit just for their big, soft appetizer pretzels with spicy deli mustard & cheese.
Pretty much anything made from the pretzel dough on the menu is great, specifically the buffalo chicken pizza.
The decor is nice, lots of wood and exposed copper brewing tanks in the main dining room enclosed in glass make for a cool atmosphere.
There is a club downstairs (Shorty's) - stay away, the sticky floors, low ceilings and well-only (low quality liquor) drinks will ruin your night!
I own a mug at the bar, it has my name on it, and it gets me extra beer at the same price! So that's a plus. The food, well its upscale pub food, but nothing to speak of.
I would give it a higher rating if it wasn't so damn BRIGHT in there. A tavern should be dim lit, its like TGIF bright.
Bizarrely enough the buffalo Chicken Egg rolls are really really really good, although will no doubt take years off your life.
the Micro Brews are better than most.
Im a regular so the staff is friendly to me, but they are not nice to all.
I would call this the one "adult bar" in town, you will see the mayor, the provost of the Univ. and the professors- safe haven from students.
But thats about all, I can say.
My younger sister goes to Kutztown so we make a trip there every once in a while and always make a stop at the Tavern.
It's clean, friendly and very rustic/homey. Most of the brewery area is on display as you walk in, which is pretty cool.
So we always start out with the same thing...The Golden Avalanche Sampler. It's basically a huge, fried plate of goodness and the main reason we get this--the corn fritters!!! I cannot express how addicting these little bites are. Its like cornbread on crack with a side of honey hah.
This last visit I ordered the cowboy burger which was so juicy, covered in chedder, onions and some yummy bbq sauce. It was so big I didn't even get through half of it. It came with a side of crispy potato wedges. My mouth is waterering just thinking of it... The others in my group got a turkey club panini and a veggie panini which were also really delish.
Definitely check this place out if you are ever in the area. It's a great spot and has some great food!
One of the better restaurants in Kutztown, it's worth a visit just for those big soft pretzels and lovely mustard & cheese appetizer. Their salads, pizzas and burgers are pretty good as well. They do make their own specialty brew's and pretzel rolls for the burgers. The decor is nice, relatively modern with big copper brewing tanks in the main dining room enclosed in glass.
I have had a few bad experiences here (not enough to keep me away) and I remember when the pretzels came with cheese (instead of the cheese being extra) and the days when dinner came with some sort of varietal bread every day (carrot muffins/whole grain/sourdough) and a variety of butter as well. But it's still very very good and one of my favorite spots in town.
Prices are reasonable and the meny has a nice variety, even some vegetarian dishes and seafood.
My boss and I just stopped here on the way home from a client meeting. I got a white pretzel pizza. It was decent. They also had Kutztown Sasparilla and specialty beers. Definite downers though. 1. There were several small fruit flies buzzing about. 2. Our server did not ask if we wanted dessert and gave us the check halfway through our meal, making us feel rushed. The food was decent, but nothing to get too excited about.
