Shorty's Bar

This place totally sucks ass!  As an undergrad at Kutztown U. in the 80's I avoided this place (despite the fact I lived right across the street) as it seemed to cater to the lowest common denominator both the University and local population had to offer.  I've dropped in a few times since for nostalgic reasons, much to my regret.  The last time was $2 pony bottle night.  After a few rounds I noticed the bartender taking $2 from my stack of bills every time he took away my empty only to take ANOTHER $2 when he brought back a fresh beer.  When I told him that I saw what he did, he took my beer away (w/o refunding my $) and cut me off.  I tried to complain but they just treated me like I was drunk--220 lbs and I'm drunk from 4 ponies?  Seriously, this place is a hole-dank, dirty and completely without character.  You can get the same ambiance by buying a bottle of MD 20/20 and drinking it in your basement.

I've never been a huge fan. It's cramped and dark and the drink prices are never all that great. It's could be much worse I'm sure as the service is usually pretty good. How picky could one really get in Kutztown when trying to dance and drink? I guess I just did get picky, but still, I go there.

I did my undergrad at Kutztown University, so this review comes from three years and a few dozen forced visits to Shorty's over that time.

Downstairs from one of Kutztown's better eating establishments (see my review on the Kuztown Tavern),  Shorty's is no place you want to find yourself on a Friday evening...or any evening for that matter.

This low-end college bar has sticky floors, extremely low ceilings and well-only (low quality liquor) drinks.

The bands and DJ's that they line up are weak and there is nowhere to move most of the time. I'm not a stingy guy, but it hurts to take my money out when they have a cover charge on weekends.

If you want to save yourself from a crummy night (and probably a hangover from the cheap drinks), pop upstairs to the take-out place attached to the Kutztown Tavern and grab some quarts of their micro-brews.
