We were on our way back to Indy from Richmond and saw this mom and pop place on the side of the road. We continued down the highway, but my boyfriend suggested that we look the place up on Yelp. After reading Joshua G.'s review about the great Manhattans we made a U-turn and headed back. It seems that in rural Indiana (unlike the rest of the world) a Manhattan is an open-faced roast beef sandwich and not a delicious bourbon cocktail. The Lakeview Restaurant doesn't even serve alcohol. However, my lack of knowledge of Hoosierisms--and Joshua G's lack of knowledge about cocktails-- is not the fault of The Lakeview Restaurant so putting that issue aside here are my thoughts. The food was good and a good value for the money. Three of us ate for $30 plus tip, though this did not include dessert. (They did look yummy though.) The service was good, though the high school student hostess who greeted us could have been friendlier. This is standard rural Indiana fare though, so expect canned green beans and corn as your side vegetable choices and your salad to be iceberg lettuce with a slice of tomato and a few shreds of carrot on top. This isn't a field greens and baby spinach sort of place.
Review Source:If you happen to find yourself cruising down U.S. 40 just west of Cambridge City, Indiana, it's definitely worth stopping here. It's true it's definitely where all the old people go. well because it's traditional american food served no fuss and cheap. great Manhattans and great home made pie! My personal favorite the peanut butter is to die for. It's extremely busy on Sunday lunch's which is of course when my family goes. The waitresses know what they're doing and you'll be glad you're here. Definitely a well kept secret in Indiana.
