I came for brunch with a party of 7 and absolutely loved the experience. The food was exceptional and the service was very nice. I would definitely recommend a brunch here. The best part is walking around the gardens afterwards.
Here's the rundown:
*Bloody Marys are delish, with a little bit of spice to them. Brandy Milk Punch, not so much. They didn't know how to make it. Stick to the basics!
*Their bread basket includes dragonfly shaped mimosa biscuits (awesome!) and they serve the bread with 3 kinds of butter. The pecan spice one was divine.
*Their prices are very good for the quality of the food you get. Put it this way, we went to another Cajun restaurant and for 30% more we got less food and mediocre quality. Latil's definitely impressed!
*Crab Mango Cake Salad - this was very good. A generous crabcake on top of a chipotle remoulade with a side salad and fresh tomatoes.
*Gulf Fish - it was the drum with a very generous amount of lump crab meat on top. Tasty!
*Grits & Grillades - made with veal, and a very nice presentation. Looked fabulous and I didn't hear any complaints.
The only thing is that there are no signs directing you here once you arrive on the grounds of Houmas House. I would definitely recommend some wayfinding signs so the older guests don't have to walk around in circles like my grandma had to do!
Went here for my birthday several months ago and I was extremely disappointed with the service. I have always highly recommended this restaurant to friends and family, but this visit made me think twice. During this visit, our server completely neglected us. We didn't get a single water refill during the entire visit nor were we asked if we wanted another round of cocktails. She was busy catering to her other two tables, checking on them and chatting them up while ignoring us. The few attempts we made to flag her down went unnoticed because she would sail pass our table. Granted, we looked a lot younger than the other patrons in the dining room so perhaps she felt that we would not have tipped her as well. However, I have been in the service industry for about 10 years now and know how to tip accordingly. The server's  blatant indifference put a damper on my birthday festivities.
Review Source:We ate at Cafe Burnside for lunch (it is called Latil's Landing for the more upscale dinner service I guess?) after taking a weekday tour of the Houmas house and gardens because it is there on the grounds. Â The menu is relatively well rounded for its size and for a restaurant serving a tlimited clientele (Houmas House tourists and a few locals). Â Service was good, if a little scattered and unorganized--the poor Swiss tourists seated by us were completely forgotten about for 15 minutes after getting their menus.
Every table gets a basket of bread and sweet pecan butter. Â They did offer daily specials during our vist, but we ordered the burger and the catfish to split. Â The burger comes with basically every topping you could want (cheese, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, bacon, mayo) and great fries. Â It was well cooked and tasted good, not to mention it seemed to be pretty popular throughout the restaurant. The catfish had a delicious cornmeal batter and the crawfish etouffee was decent, but the rice it was served over was a little weird for the style of the dish (curry powder or turmeric flavor to it....hmmm) and the asparagus side was pretty flavorless--not even garlic or butter.
Many around us ordered dessert and I noticed the shrimp po-boy was absolutely stuffed, which kind of made me jealous so you might try it out. Â Overall, if you are in the area or touring the Houmas House then this is a perfect place to stop. Â It is not an overwhelmingly delicious restaurant, but it definitely is good and will please most anyone in your crowd.
Awesome gumbo, the best I had after trying it in several other places in New Orleans. Â The staff were cold and snippy except for the guy that brought us bread 10 minutes AFTER the gumbo was served. Â It's a nice place but the server and other staff showed no southern hospitality at all. Â I loved how our server became super friendly as we were about to leave. Â Just another example of going for a higher tip for the price of being completely phony.
Review Source:Burnside Cafe, as they call the outside Restaurant that is not in the Mansion, serves the same food. Â The food was fantastic! Â The best I have had in a long time. Â The gardens are breathtaking. Â This is a beautiful place even in February when everything is dead. Â Can't wait to see it in the Spring. Â Plan on taking my mother there for the tour and to eat at the restaurant.
Review Source:After a fantastic tour of the Houmas mansion and grounds, we were lucky enough to enjoy a lunch at Latil's Landing. The staff was a bit curt, but that didn't stop us from enjoying the great views of the gardens and friendly diners. Â I ordered a Smoked Salmon Salad which looked like it had an entire fish on it and was very refreshing and lite. I was surprised to find heirloom tomatoes on the salad and coming from CA, am skeptical of heirlooms anywhere else. Â They were great! Â My mom had a HUGE bowl of gumbo which was full of fish and andouille. Â My friend had a ham and brie sandwich and her mom had a shrimp po'boy (which was overflowing with crispy shrimp, so much so that they were almost falling off the plate). Â Now a meal like this in a location like this sounds like it would be expensive...not at all! Â My salad was $14, the sandwich $12. Â It's a steal for all the food you get. Â
