How can you not love someplace called Liquid Assets?  With a dazzling menu that boasts such items as delectable pate and lovely cheeses, top that off with a huge assortment of terrific wines  and you have a wine bar that commands attention.  I ate until I was ready to pop and drank until I stumbled back to the hotel.  I was having such fun that I didn't want to leave.  Gotta love a bartender with a sense of humor. Â
If you love good wine and good food, head here for a little, or a lot, of both.
What a nice wine bar! Â The staff was incredibly friendly, it was in a good location and was a comfortable place to hang out for a couple of hours. Â The food was _fantastic_ (best beef tartare I've ever had); I was really impressed at the selection of appetizers, entrees and cheese plates-- definitely more than just a wine bar. Â As for the wine, they had a nice selection, although most wines were on the younger side. Â But they are helpful in letting you taste until you find one you like. Â Also had a decent beer and cocktail list. Â Definitely a place I would visit again.
Review Source:What a wonderful wine bar! Â The wine list is thorough and deep, plus a full and complete bar. Â (Very nice single malt selection, in particluar.)
What sets the place apart, though, are the very nice staff and the unusually robust menu for a wine bar.
We had an assortment of small plates, inculding a great butternut risotto, crab cakes, a very unusual spanish cheese plate and a great, flavorful salad. Â
Can't really go wrong - wonderful atmosphere, drinks and food!
This place has evolve over time from a beautiful wine and beer lounge to a beautiful wine and beer lounge that also has fabulous cocktails and food I'd put up against some of the "best" restaurants in San Francisco. Interesting menu, fresh ingredients, well prepared, flavorful without being over "done." It's one of the pricier tickets in town, but so good!
Review Source:We had reservations at the Ashland Springs Hotel and arrived right after all the restaurants were closed. We were feeling the need to eat a bit and relax before sleeping and a quick search of Yelp brought us to this wine bar. What a great little place! The server was attentive and helpful. I had a wonderful glass of Pinot Noir and my husband had a great ale, both locally sourced. We also had the bacon wrapped dates and the steak tartare, both very tasty. Sitting on the sofa here with a small meal was a great way to unwind from a long day of driving in the rain! We ended up buying a bottle of the Pinot Noir since we really enjoyed it and it's a local winery that doesn't sell anywhere else.
Review Source:I wish I'd had more time for a leisurely meal at this place (but I had to make an 8pm show). Even with our time constraints, the staff was great: so great, in fact, that we went back after the show to eat those blood orange crepes we'd been coveting. Beautiful little place, lots of dim lighting and weird art, comfy couches and an interesting wine list and rack. If they had a TV, as some of the reviews suggest, they either took it out or turned it off. In October, the place was nearly deserted, even during dinner hour before the shows.
The menu is limited, but really, people, that's a good thing: it means that they're not trying to do four dozen different things badly. The beef tournedos were extremely tender and well-seasoned, and I only wish, as I said, that I hadn't had to wolf them down.
Terrible service. Â The waitress becomes increasingly perky as she informs you the kitchen has run out of the already limited entrees and appetizers. Â She ignored us repeatedly before we hailed her down to order. The people who entered after us had to get their own menus. They ran out of 1 of the 4 entrees and had no beef alternatives. The waitress also forgot my salad.
Also tiny bar tables and no table cloths.  Two thumbs down.  The only savior was the manager who at least  discussed our issues in a civil manner and admittedly the one portion of beef they had was well cooked.
I strongly urge you to eat instead at Coquina where the service is great and the food far more refined. Â They too offered a mushroom based appetizer which wasn't overly candied like the one at Liquid.
got a red wine tasting and a whiskey tasting. the place tries, but it's a little off. the seating is not that comfortable and the lighting is a little too bright for a winebar. the place is also a bit loud and cold. their selection seemed pretty good and also liked that you could buy a bottle for just $5 above the shelf price. seems like this place might've started off as a shop then turned into a bar.
Review Source:The only place in Ashland to sit comfortably for hours, savor some wine or a drink, and graze on small plates. Â The service is relaxed and there's no pressure to turn a table. Â If you're a knitter, this is the best place in town to relax and enjoy!. The steak tartare is probably the best I've ever had.
Review Source:This little place was across the street from our hotel, and I watched people coming in and out for a couple of days.  When we finally went in, I expected it to be a little snooty and possibly  unfriendly -- after all, there were paintings on the wall (1) for sale and (2) from an artist I could recognize as having seen before!  And we are doofuses.
Nope. Seated with a smile, waters right away, checked on often and our ordering was a lovely conversation with a knowledgeable server who made appropriate suggestions, and followed up with more information and without rushing us out. Not cheap, but a treat.
Definitely one of my favorite spots in Ashland to get a glass of great wine. This place is also special because it is where my boyfriend and I had our first date.
The couches offer cozy seating, the sparse decor and low lighting make it one of the more sophisticated spots in the valley.
The young male waiter is one of my favorite servers in Ashland-- he's got vast wine knowledge and is friendly and competent as well. He's never made a bad wine recommendation!
The food is way overpriced and the serving sizes are small. I wouldn't come here for a meal, but purchasing an appetizer or dessert with your wine is probably the most advisable way to go. I personally would rather spend that money on some fab wine over an overpriced entree. That being said, the lavendar creme brulee is something special and the cheese plate is outstanding (small portions though, but well chosen cheeses).
I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a nice night out in a classy joint. Oh, they also offer some nice jazz on many weekend evenings.
I went in with my boyfriend last week because of the great reviews. Â
Maybe we should have gone on a day Lucy was there but it wasn't awesome. They seemed to have a good selection and I was really excited to see Nikasi on tap.
We explained to the bartender that we were from out of town- visiting, found them on yelp, what not what not. Â She just wasn't that friendly at all. Like we put a lot more effort into talking to her than she did to us and she wasn't busy. Â I think she just had friends on the other side of the bar that she was more into.
I understand that... but... it can ruin your experience with a place- I liked the art and the light fixtures- maybe I felt like the atmosphere was a lil cold and not as romantic as what I am used too going into a wine bar. Not a fan of the big tv- like another person mentioned.
Besides that my wine wasn't incredible- it had a lot of sediment and tasted like 3 or 4 days opened. Â My bf really liked his beer- they put it in a red wine glass which was weird but didn't really bother me. Â
We also got a cheese plate for $14 and it was sad- good cheeses, there was just an average amount of cheese and 4 pieces of bread. For $14 I was expecting a little more, at other wine bars, that can get you cheese, artichoke hearts, some nuts, bread, olives, and a lil chocolate.
I REALLY REALLY wanted to love this place. I was very excited to go, I love wine, cheese, and good beer. I probably won't go back.
The ambiance is terrific. The food is outstanding and it is a French man speaking. The service with Denise is outstanding. Very highly recommended. In addition, the shop has a great selection of wines and it is great to be able to select the great wine that fit your meal and to pay a great fair price. Very highly recommended. We will be back
Review Source:Wow...what a find! Great wine selection wine Bar/restaurant. My wife had the risotto and I had the halibut entrees. They were superb! Carefully and cleverly prepared. Pared with some of the wines by the glass and exceptional service (thanks to Lucy), made for a memorable evening. Nice locals (and local want to be's) haunt. Comfortable with tables, Â bar, and couches, we couldn't have found a more comfortable and welcoming place. Service was impeccable ( thanks again Lucy). The owner/chef/wine buyer Jim and his wife Denise are charming and more than knowledgeable and have done an outstanding job. Don't miss this gem among the many places to dine, relax and enjoy in Ashland.
Review Source:Jim and Denise are awesome! Â They have considered every possible detail. Â I took my wife to their establishment for our 21st anniversary dinner and we sat in the window watching the tourists wander by as we devoured our dinners! Â We were treated like royalty and would definitely recommend them. Â Oh, also the food was EXCELLENT! Â rs
Review Source:Very nice atmosphere, quiet, subdued, no loud patrons. Â Yay! Â Food was well prepared and fairly priced. Â Nice feature was purchase of a full bottle of wine from their selection carries only a $5 corkage. Â Cheese course (we had 3 with greens and baguette) were excellent. Â We will visit again on our travels through Oregon.
Review Source:I love this place. Â I love to sit at a bar and eat. Â Not sure why, but I do. Â The bar stools are comfy. Â
There are always a slew of great beers on tap, often including Pliny the Elder or another Russian River delight, which are always favorites.
The menu is limited, but I've never had a bad dish. Â Current fave is the Caldo Verde soup.
The bartenders are great as well - always ready to suggest a wine, customize a cocktail and gab with you. Â
If you like to watch sports, it's probably the best non-sports bar sports bar, with a big plasma over the bar. Â You'd never expect it from looking at the place.
I might go tonight!
We literally just walked out of this place smiling, and were inspired enough to write our first review.
With a gallery-like ambiance, this place serves up a great selection of wines by the glass, beer, cocktails, small plates, desserts and a few entrees. We split a sauteed chanterelle appetizer, followed by a Dagoba chocolate lavender creme brulee. Denise advised we pair these with a grenache flight, and a great Zin.
But, really, what made us want to make the trip back to Ashland to visit this place again was the friendliness of the place. Though we were certainly not the only people in the restaurant, we experienced great service. Highly recommended.
This place is THE place in Ashland for wine and beer. They have a great selection of wine from Oregon, Washington, California and around the world. They only have about 5 taps but there are always filled with top notch, hard-to-find beer. The atmosphere is perfect if your looking for a nice relaxing place to hang out and talk with friends or a loved one. The food is a expensive and not all that great but their Spanish plate and their cheese selections are pretty good. I'd recommend this place to anyone.
Review Source:No contest, best glass of wine/app/desert/hang for five/ decide to do dinner after all/ in town.  There are "conspicuously" classy joints in Ashland, understandable in a tourist town, but L-A is "understated" class  with small town friendly feel.
Walk in and check the shelves before you take a seat - there are more bottles on the shelves than on the printed list. Â
Talking of seats the used  looking used sofas are exactly that - distressed rather than well worn - terribly uncomfortable, old springs sticking through the seat, no back support, and really should be returned to the dumpsters they look like they came from.  Sit at a table unless you have a credit  account with a local chiropracter. Only the Varsity cinema can outdo this for torture. They need to go. I have no idea how another reviewer could possibly call these "plush"  couches. Utterly untrue, poor chap. Never mind. Review not rant....
The LA wine list is  comprehensive for such a  small operation with an obvious emphasis on OR/CA/WA  wineries ( Ashland is a tourist town duh - no cheapo chilean wine here) . Their  3 wine sampler flight  is always intelligently selected and makes for fun comparisons, usually a higher end, and 2 middle of the road matched varietal/styles that often surprise. The stock turns over frequently  but real high ticket wines are absent - not least because so many are overpriced (eg  Oregon Pinots and "claret blends") blasphemy I know but sadly  true.. and the selection here is discerning as well as value oriented.
BUT  the food is the "sleeper" here. Rarely does one find a wine bar even in a big city  with such delights. Beef tartare is outstanding  when available, as is the almost liquid exquisite duck pate ( a foie gras style but PC I am told). Local cheeses and other offerings  on a tapas style apps menu can extend for however long you want to drink and graze in style, with a few entrees for backup.  I am not allowed deserts but am told they shine.  Â
Service is attentive and never intrusive. Â Owner Denise is a stellar hostess and can guide you through her stock list informatively although she does need to take an art appreciation course. Â Sizzling service from recent recruit Lucy.
For a town this small we are lucky to have this place - Â locals call it Lick ass, but its really Kick ass.
we were here on a sunday evening, and there were probably all of a dozen people there. Â i don't know why, because it was a great little place! Â the wine menu was interesting and diverse (from the very local to the international), the service was friendly and accommodating, and the food was superb too (with much of it being local!) Â the setting was cozy, but classy, and the prices seemed very reasonable (compared to the bay, anyway.)
... and, in case you were wondering, i had/shared:
the taste of spain appetizer
lobster risotto
dagoba lavender chocolate creme brulee
and a glass of crios' 2008 torrantes (argentina)
My cousin tells me that people near the Rogue River Valley become slightly insane over the quality of their food and wine, because, well, there's nothing else really to do in that neck of the woods. This might be the rationale behind Liquid Assets: the wine, the food, and the decor have been carefully and thoughtfully selected - suggesting that someone is a bit nutty about gastronomy, and has a bit too much free time.
Whatever the reason behind it, I strongly suggest stopping here for a flight of wine and any of their appetizers. I can't even remember what I ordered - just that it was a salty, heavenly mix that involved chorizo and me trying to convince my beloved that we needed to move to Ashland immediately.
