I came here after going to the Riverhead Aquarium, which morbidly ALWAYS gets me in the mood for seafood lol. I was really craving a lobster roll, so after looking on my trusty Yelp app, we decided on this place. And it was only a 10 minute drive from the Aquarium.
They have some really nice options for seating; Indoor, Outdoor and then also on deck, so you can choose to sit in the sun or in an enclosed area. We opted to sit on the deck.
The service was good and the staff was friendly. We started off with the Seafood Mac and Cheese and the Calamari. The Seafood Mac and Cheese was good but I feel like it could have been a little more moist. The Calamari looked almost like onion rings. I'm used to Calamari being small and fat. These were long and thin (EXACTLY like onion rings). The batter was tasty, but I really didn't like the sauce. It tasted like it was out of a can.
For my entree I ordered the "Hot" lobster roll, which I was told was "like a lobster without all the work and the roll comes on the side". I wasn't down for all the mayo I saw on the rolls at other tables, so that's what I went for, My boyfriend also went for the same, as it was his first lobster roll experience. The roll was good! It came out with a ramekin filled with lobster meat, a hot roll and fries on the side. oh, and a little side of melted butter, It was delicious! My boyfriend really seemed to enjoy him as well. The bill wasn't too bad, each lobster roll plate was about $24, market price.
It was not my favorite roll (my favorite is still here in the city, Luke's Lobster), but it definitely was delicious and I would not be opposed to coming here again :)
There's nothing like finishing a 5k obstacle race, and going to a restaurant with new friends to sample the foods in Long Island. Yelpers are all about going to places alone and but never eating alone... right?
First of all thanks Lobster Roll for accommodating me, who was still completely drenched in mud and manure (ew). Thanks for not chasing me out with a broom. And thanks for letting wash up in your clean bathroom.
Yard seating and front porch seating are available. Not much good view but still great for the summer weather.
Onto the food. The lobster roll was okay. But supposedly being the flagship menu item, it didn't leave too much impression. The lobster comes as a side from the roll. It becomes cumbersome to fill up the roll with pieces of lobster that will all fall out when you dunk it into the butter sauce. Yes I am that lazy. The lobster itself is extremely buttery. Even without the butter dipping, you could taste the butter inside the lobster. As a fat lover, I have nothing against butter, but I prefer my seafood to be as pure as possible with minimal enhancements. The coleslaw had too much mayo. Fries were crispy and tasty as advertised.
The price is just a teensy weensy bit on the expensive side, but cheap considering the neighborhood. My lobster roll is quoted market price, which was 22 dollars. Service was extremely friendly.
Overall a solid restaurant to enjoy a nice dinner, but not special enough to go a special destinations list.
Lobster Roll!!!! Â
I've always wanted to try a lobster roll and after a day out east, we stopped here. Â I'm always nervous when ordering anything that says market price because it could truly be any price and how would I know besides asking? Â
But when I was here I dove right in and ordered the lobster roll. Â It was DELICIOUS. Â And warm. And buttery. Â And just everything I thought it would / should be. Â
This location apparently is a little more formal and stuffy compaired to the Lobster Roll Southside according to my friends and hopefully I'll try there soon.
Stopped in for dinner after a few hours at the Wineries. Â The food was amazing - we split chowder, lobster mac and cheese, and a oyster po boy. Â The ambiance was great and we were seated out on a deck, which was nice. Â Prices were very reasonable and the service was great. Â I would definately recommend the lobster roll as a stop on any LI wine tour!
Review Source:For a place that is supposedly known for -- and named for -- their lobster roll, the poor quality may come as quite a surprise. My wife and I ordered their "famous" lobster rolls for lunch this afternoon and were terribly disappointed. The pieces of lobster in the salad were tasteless and mushy, clearly indicating the stuff was not fresh. Adding to our disappointment, the cole slaw was watery and the french fries were clearly the frozen, store-bought kind. Oh, and don't look up: the dust covered fake ivy and plants will make your skin crawl. The final kicker? When our lunch bill arrived at nearly $50.
Review Source:I can honestly say I'm not really sure if this place should get 3 or 4 stars but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. You see the only time I stop here and we've been here at least a half dozen times it's been on the way back from visiting the nearby wineries. So with wine goggles on I will say they have the best dam lobster roll I ever had. No filler, big chunks off lobster. They also make an outstanding Lobster Mac and Cheese. They do have fish and other stuff on the menu. But this is the only things I order here.
Also, a tip this place gets crowded on weekends, if they tell you it's an hour wait, just go sit at the bar and have a drink and order your meal there. It's never crowded.
Not gonna lie, I was kinda surprised to receive a deal e-mail for Lunch during the week following MDW, even amid rumors about their recent success (or lack thereof) & endangered sustainability. That said, their Newsday $20 for $40 voucher was only valid for dine-in during the week on non-holidays with a minimum $50 purchase (and can't be combined).
The site for this joint is beyond antiquated and not very informative, 'open at 11:30 for lunch and dinner' - simultaneous meals? '[C]asual family dining at it's [sic[ best and Open: April to Christmas, Fri., Sat., Sun, spring and fall, Six days in summer, closed Tuesday.' - if you can decipher that, you're a better person than I.
A savvy reader may notice that I penned a a rather concise and fairly useless review of the seemingly flawless LRN on NYE a few years back. Naive adolescence and delirious Yelping do not a good combination make...either that  or the quality here just fell off a cliff. My most recent visit was on a humid but relatively cool Wednesday evening and we dined al fresco along with the other families, the fragrances of citronella and cleaning products permeating the atmosphere. Once we were seated, our eyes both darted to the dead flowers, a fitting centerpiece for a disjointed meal for an eatery in decline. Aside from that (and the loud voiced complaint regarding a previous visit of return diners at the adjacent table), the setting is more quaint than I remembered, especially given it's within shouting distance of the main motorist drag of the area. We made the mistake of confirming up front that we didn't need to present our voucher; well, either that or the service is just roundly slow for everyone - waters left unrefilled, plates taking quite a while to be whisked away, etc. It admittedly took us some time to decide on which of the fried items to commit to, given that they comprise a majority of the menu, mainly the same creature manipulated slightly for different portions/courses. Despite realizing the implications of a seafood joint that's primarily submerging their product in the deep fryer to render it character-less, we made the mistake of going with a half-dozen raw clams to start, which were on a bed of water and a couple ice cubes (if the ice is already melted when you receive your raw seafood, you wonder if their off taste is the chicken or the egg of the situation). Despite the most bountiful crustacean harvest in recent memory, the eponymous lobster roll remained $21.95 (MP) and inspired no raves. I went with soft shell crab platter ($22.95), being the tail end of the season, but it dawned on me after ordering that they were a mainstay on the menu and had a fixed price - peculiar & unnerving. The side of slaw accompanying the overly batter-y duo was some cabbage atop a ghastly pool of mayo, a delightful aftermath to complement the rest of the elegant meal.
Service was friendly enough but certainly amateur hour, no fault of the waitresses or busboys. The bill was tricky, taxing on the full price of the meal, contrary to almost all other deals I've redeemed elsewhere (not sure if this is a Newsday or Lunch policy, but do acknowledge that it made gratuity less painful to determine). Concurrent Smartphone users (with the Foursquare app) and Amex customers will also be happy to know that they can check in and load an offer for a $5 statement credit for a $10 purchase. I wouldve been outraged if I truly dropped full price for this outing, something ridiculous like $60 pretip - portions were large and greasy enough to hold you over 'til the next morning, but that's a more regrettable hole in the pocket. Sure, you might counter that the total is a result of the respective 'going rates' (aka year-round market price) if prepared properly, but given that Lunch is a nice outdoor spot if you plan to get slightly raucous and divert focus away from the food, I suppose it's worth the price if that's your intention, and perhaps even if not?
If local law enforcement wielded butter breathalyzers, I would've been arrested immediately after leaving the misshapen lot. (PS They consider it Baiting Hollow, Yelp/gMaps.) If I ever return, I'll stop being foolish and just go with the (of course fried and not-flatteringly described on the menu) Puffer instead. I wish I could recommend Lunch strictly to revive it, but I just can't anymore - we'll see how long these last legs keep it upright.
We saw this 'complex' advertised in the North fork magazine we picked up at the ferry terminal. We had decided to stop in for lunch and check out the new wine/beer/food tasting barn. We were extremely disappointed to find that it hadn't opened yet. So we decided to eat lunch at the Lobster roll where we found the lobster prices to be outrageous. I settled on a crab cake sandwich and my husband had the clam strip roll. Neither was anything work bragging about. I should have stuck with my gut and picked another fantastic option using my Yelp app. You live, you learn and then you Yelp!
Review Source:If you love bottom feeding crustaceans in the ocean that feed on the finest creatures, then you probably love lobsters. The Lobster Roll Northside serves up a fairly decent lobster roll though not the best I've had on the NoFo. That award goes to the North Fork Table's Food Truck. The Lobster Roll originally started in Amagansett and this is their other location, in Riverhead on Sound Ave. AND here goes:
Crustaceans chopped up in a bun:
+ It was generally very good. VERY hearty from a lobsterry standpoint, the mayo was just right though some people might find it overly creamy, the salt and pepper content was good, it had a good combination of veggies (celery, onions etc) though I think it could've benefitted from some tarragon or something similar herby to kick it up a notch. This is one of the things that I think really help the North Fork Table/Food Truck's lobster roll and sets it apart from others.
Carbs:
+ The bun was good, moist, fresh and wasn't stale. It was a bit too thick/carby for my liking however most will find it okay.
Potato things fried in grease:
+ They are greasy, salty, peppery and thick. They pair well with mayo and ketchup...not the worst I've had, not the best.
I'm not sure if the North Fork Table's Lunch Truck is open year round but I'd rather spend the extra $2-$3 for their lobster roll as opposed to the Lobster Roll's Lobster Roll. Though it was still "good..."
THIS has been a review by Gaurav
I'm a little torn in writing this review. On the one hand, this the sort of the place that I want to love and support: a 'small business,' the kind of place that has boutiques and gift shops around it even though it's sort of in the middle of nowhere, distinctly non-corporate and non-chain (even though there's apparently at least one other location).
But on the other hand, the service here really sucks. Came here with a group of eight around 4pm on a Sunday. The place was busy, but by no means packed. So why did we have to wait 45 minutes for a table? When I could see several tables open the entire time? Why did we get paged that our table was ready, only to be told that there had been a pager mix-up and really we still had to wait? Why did our server, Cathy, disappear for long periods of time repeatedly? Why did I finally have to get up and get silverware and napkins for our table even though I had asked two separate people for place settings?
I left a 15% tip out of guilt (I typically tip 20%) and have been kicking myself ever since because it really deserved more like 5%.
I will say that the Fish & Chips dish was yummy. But I can get that just about anywhere. No need to drive all the way out here to be treated like a second-class citizen.
I recommend avoiding Lobster Roll. And you can trust me; I'm an Elite. ;)
If you want to have one of these famous East End lobster rolls, you have a much better chance here than at the popular Amagansett one. They have several different rooms (the outside being really nice) and have your standard fish sandwiches, burgers, and fries. But the star of the meal was absolutely the onion rings. I don't know what they do to them, but they are heavenly.
Review Source:The food is great! They have little shops around the area. The family and I go out there during the fall when pumpkin picking. The have a great lunch menu. And I love the atmosphere. They have an outdoor area to sit also. And it is decorated for Christmas and Halloween. It's great for children and family's. I simply enjoy getting the Clam Chowder and crackers on the side.
Review Source:My husband and I used to live in Long Island and wanted to share the authentic Lobster Roll experience with our kids.
The Lobster Roll slider with cole slaw is as good as it gets. Â The roll is filled with chunks of fresh lobster claw meat, celery and mayo. Â Simple and the best we have ever had.
On a personal note, I want to especially thank Dana Bondsen. Â We drove back to our hotel in New York when my daughter realized she forgot her purse. Â We called The Lobster Roll and Dana assured us that the purse was there and had tried to locate a number to call us.
Needless to say, we drove back to Riverhead (two hour drive from New York) and decided to have dinner. Â We tried the Lobster Bisque and the Seafood Gumbo. Â Both were outstanding!
Customer service is lacking in many places it seems, but Dana was fantastic!!! Â Dana went above and beyond and we really appreciated it.
Our meal was delicious, and the service was even better.
Yuck for the second time. Went 5 years ago and said never again. I have no idea who writes these reviews but their lobster roll was bland back then. So tonight we were in the area and decided to try it again and give it a second chance. Hubby ordered the fried oyster po' boy sandwich and I order the crabcake sandwich. He tasted his (the oyster) and said he didn't like it. Being he is much pickier than I am, I switched with him thinking I would enjoy it. Well this is the fist time in my life I have ever eaten fried oysters that looked fried on the outside and raw on the inside. It was like eating a deepfried coated snail. BLECH!! We love raw oysters too but to have a half cooked half slimy raw one is not appetizing. Either cook it or chill it but never in between!!! The crabcake was ok but nothing deserving of the raves here. We also tried their award winning seafood nachos. UGH!! it was bean chili with some shrimp in it in a smokey tomato based sauce. The flavors really didn't work. Plus that was it! Chili, cheese and a tiny bit of scallions, nothing else, no lettuce, onion, olives or anything else that traditionally comes on nachos. It was almost convienence store quality. So it is the last time we will ever go to The Lobster Roll. The experince does not live up to the hype and the food is horrible. Â I gave it one extra star than it deserves in case the oyster roll was a mistake in prep. If it is instended to be slightly cooked and then slmiy raw on the inside minus a star!
Review Source:After pumpkin picking out east, this place was conveniently located across the street from the pumpkin patch so we decided to come here (plus, we heard they had good lobster rolls...well you better if your name is "lobster roll").
You can tell immediately that the entire staff was stressed because of how busy it was. The hostess told us it would be 45 minutes for a table which we weren't too happy about. Apparently she could pick up on it and then told us we could sit immediately if we wanted to go outside. It was a little cold, but we opted for the outside table.
Apparently when she did this, she offered this option to 3 other tables simultaneously which meant that one waitress had 3 new tables all at once. The waitress was nice, but way over her head with everything. Â That being said, food is what's most important and overall we all had a great meal.
We started with seafood nachos which were pretty good, but not "amazing" like the waitress indicated. It was mostly regular, ordinary nachos with a couple pieces of scallops and shrimp thrown in. For dinner I got the lobster roll slider with a cup of lobster bisque. Lobster bisque was very good and so was the lobster roll (the cole slaw that it came with was one of the best I've had).
Funny thing was they kept bringing candles out to our table so we could see when we were waiting on drinks and things that were more important (and plus the candles didn't really help with the lighting at all). The waitress did try really hard and she was nice so points for that.
If you're in the area, definitely recommended although I'd try and go when the crowds are a little less.
I came here by accident and it was a pleasure.
I was going to a vineyard with my family and looking for a place to eat. Due to my trusty iPhone Lobster Roll showed up when did a local search. Since we were in Riverhead my sister called a friend who grew up there to see if she knew about it and as it turns out she used to work there so she recommended it.
My dad went to college and lived in Boston after graduating so he's a bit of a snob when it comes to seafood and he loved the New England clam chowder as did I. I also got a lobster roll which was very yummy.
I would definitely recommend this place and would for sure go again.
What makes a seafood  restaurant in Long Island famous knowing the high concentration of nasal, yappy, elitist New Yorkers that vocalize every unpleasantry over dinner with relentless, perpetually dour, gusto?  Offering a kick ass Lobster Roll Slider packed with luscious lobster claw for only eight dollars a pop certainly helps. The Lobster Roll in Riverhead New York, gives you a taste of Cape Cod without the forced Kennedy accents or the silent, gloom and doom, , Samuel Adams sipping routine.  The Lobster Roll is less preppy than those family friendly vacation haunts in the Cape and much less class conscious than those sand dune hoarders that resent tourists as much as Arizona resents illegal immigration.
I sat on the Patio with my fiancé while a two man band played in a charming courtyard while belting out classic covers like Midnight Hour and Knocking on Heaven's Door which isn't your typical Saturday afternoon set list in the Cape where Jack Johnson is considered too heavy . I keep on bringing up Cape Cod because the Lobster Roll restaurant is modeled after those  bright yet white worn summer cottages that radiate warm, nurturing vibes in that safe 1950's enclosed, cocoon sort of way. .
The Soft Shell Crab Po Boy was beyond wow worthy. I've never tasted such flaky, lemony light specs of greatness in my life. The wedge indented fries that came with it were delicious. So was the creamy fresh slaw that was savory, crunchy and filling by itself. Â I even fell in love with my dill Pickle, which I considered packing up and taking home with me but I'm not a 85 year old Jewish Grandma so that's not acceptable behavior yet.
I only skimmed the surface at the Lobster Roll yet this menu is loaded with fish filled treasures that are more substantial, dinner worthy events. Don't take it from me, just check out the list of all the famous Jewish Comedians that have dined there, it starts from Jackie Mason to Rodney to Seinfeld, icon, icon, icon. Can a Seafood Restaurant that housed such big names in comedy get any more iconic than that?
This is a great place to have a meal before you start wine tasting along the 25 route. You can either take a carryout to have a picnic at the wineries or eat there. We tried the puffer, deep-fried puffer, aka blow fish, for the first time. It tastes great, a cross between frog leg and cod fish. The lobster is perfectly cooked. The lobster on the croissant is nice. My daughter loves lobster bisque. The best of all is the service. The staff is very kind and efficient.
Review Source:The place does a great job with fried seafood. Â Let's face it at $22 per, the lobster roll is really hard to justify, even on a holiday weekend. Â Try to look past the dingy surroundings, the crinkle cut Sysco french fries and the powdered tetley tea iced tea. Â The fried clams and flounder were pretty awesome. Â I suppose you could do the chowder and the lobster roll here if you were ready to plop down $150 on a cheesy snack bar. Â I'm not sure I know too many people who are signed up for that in this economy.
Review Source:The place is decent for the atmosphere and taking a easy day, the food is eh ok but nothing that blows me away, we ordered for two of us, a Calamari that was decent but possibly frozen which was upsetting, it was slightly chewy but crispy. My girlfriend had fish and chips and I had a soup, hmm this is where it got interesting... We do not drink (A iced tea) and our bill for lunch was about $60+ with tip? For lunch, with no alcohol? Seems a bit pricey for mostly fried food. Try Buoy one next time in Riverhead, cheaper and better.
Review Source:Where to start...how about with the food?
The stuffed flounder looked like it was cooked in an Easy Bake oven. Burnt to a crisp on the outside, the inside was mushy and flavorless.
The "jumbo" soft shell crabs were just barely over the size limit. Far from jumbo, unless you're counting the 2lbs of batter that covered each one.
The french fries, which we were told were "amazing" by our friendly server, were nothing more than frozen diner fries.
We left with unsettled stomachs and a gaping hole in our wallet which we couldn't quite understand. In what universe, other than at the airport, do you pay $22 per plate for food that make McDonald's look gourmet.
The help was friendly - the only saving grace for this establishment. They get one gold star for that.
Recommendation: if you're in the area and looking for a good meal, head on down to the Cooperage Inn - great food (including seafood), same prices and you won't feel violated in several ways as you pay your bill and leave. It's just a stone's throw to the west on the north side of Sound Ave.
Worst dining experience of 2009 so far. Thanks Lobster Roll!
I was not impressed at all with the food and it is definitely overpriced. I will give it one more try because I didn't really try any of their seafood dishes other than the peel n eat shrimp which were just okay. The chicken fingers were dry and didn't taste good at all and the fries were bland. The ice cream was pretty good but the chocolate mousse cake was terrible - dried out and stale.
The kids menu is decent - my daughter had the mac n cheese which was just Kraft but that's what she likes so I can't complain. There is a cute playground there for the kids and the outdoor seating area is very nice. The staff was wonderful and it' would be a nice place to stop for lunch while driving around the north shore but it didn't meet my expectations considering all the hype it has.
we did take out for lunch, yeah we noticed there is  a lot of staff there - just thought it was cause it was between the lunch and dinner shifts . . . anyway flounder sandwich perfect, just perfect, as well as the coleslaw, my mom had the soft-shell crab sandwich and she liked it as well.  both clam chowders were great (Manhattan and New England) - yeah the quarts of chowders to go did seem pricey
