Okay, so Local Joe's may not be the fanciest place. It doesn't have every beer known to man like the Flying Saucer, and it isn't Foundation with innovative cocktails. But, Local Joe's has some very important things in its favor:
1: They have a solid selection of beers. I'm a beer snob, and Joe's is pretty good at whetting my whistle. I'm never stuck debating if I want to suffer through Bud or Coors.
2: Bartenders who can mix a drink. Far too often, I've been to bars where even simple drinks - think a gin and tonic - get messed up. But not here. At Joe's, I can ask for lesser known cocktails and the barkeeps come through with a stiff drink made the way I like them. Â
3: Their bar food is fantastic. The wings are fantastic, the fried pickles and jalapenos one of my favorite things to munch on while enjoying a few drinks.
4: The bartenders! The staff at Joe's is always rather friendly, and will gladly talk with you, trade jokes and help select a drink. Someone commented that service was slow, but that's true of any bar at peak times.
I feel pretty lucky to have a watering hole like Joe's here in Sanford.
Personally, I love Joe's. One of the few places in the area that has something on tap aside from Miller and Bud. The bartender knows how to mix a traditional Old Fashioned (for my husband) or a Manhattan (often, for me). If you just want your basics, though, they do have PBR and others next to the Shiner and New Belgium handles.
As for food; the quesadilla is good, wings are delicious and fried pickles and jalapenos are awesome! It's your basic bar food, but they do it well. We normally just go in for drinks, though and find the bartenders to be convivial and willing to mix whatever your heart desires.
Also, they've recently renovated and the new look is very polished. Nice new hardwoods and fixtures.
Solid food with the ambiance of a hometown bar. Â I ordered the Aujus Burger with Fried Pickles and Jalepenos and a Guiness. Â Burger meat was just ok, but the Au jus sauce/dip reminded me of my mama's french dip equivelant. Â The fried pickles/jalepenos were addictively tasty. Â Guinness...good pour. Â Friendly, attentive, non-annoying staff.
