@ Mark T. Having visited this bar myself, I'll give you the location issue, but why would you purchase a http://restaurant.com voucher and not invest the time to look into the establishment??? The owners do on occasion have their dog in the bar, albeit friendly as could be; this may scare some, but let's face facts, it is a neighborhood bar! As far as the decor being as you say "faintly Irish" you either didn't take the time to look around, or must have your eyes examined! The walls are full of authentic items and ephemera, and the Local Public House happens to be one of the few bars where the bartenders can give you the explanations of such! I would recommend a stop in any time!
P.S your comments about people drinking pbr while the suns out make you sound like a pretentious ass.
We bought a http://www.restaurant.com gift certificate for a location in Waterbury that we had not been to, figuring it would be good to try something new, but we really had no idea what we were getting ourselves into! Â The Local Public house is located just far enough off of the green in downtown Waterbury that I should have been leery of it before my tires even hit West Main Street. Â It was very dark and dingy and the moment we walked in, I knew we had been HORRIBLY misled. Â
The decor has a faintly Irish theme to it, but the bar was filled with neighborhood regulars drinking $2 PBR even a pit bull! Â They did have a halfway decent tap selection and the bartender was VERY nice, but nothing about it gave me any reassurance that I would want to eat food cooked there, or if they even really served food! Â To sum up, I politely ordered a beer and literally drank it as fast as I could and got the hell out of there. Â While I was chugging, I noticed what appeared to be at LEAST three drug deals happening outside!
I almost hate to write this review, because the bartender was very nice to us and you hate to trash any local business that is struggling, but if this place plans on doing any real business, they are definitely in the wrong location. Â In fact, the only reason I gave it two stars was because of the reasons listed above. Â If the Local Public House was magically transplanted almost anywhere else and had a thorough scrubbing and some more light fixtures installed, I could possibly think about recommending it to someone else. Â But, I really don't want anyone else to make the same mistake that we did. Â So, unless you live within a block radius and like drinking PBR while the sun is out, I'd avoid this place and go pretty much anywhere else!
