This is difficult for me. We've been coming here quite often for take out over the last 1+ years. We noticed the last few months that the quality and any special instructions (all beans, no rice) was lacking. I'm giving this a 1 star because I DID call and talk with a woman/manager but felt I was just put off. Â The chile relleno was the WORST! Â omg... The taste, texture, appearance, etc. The crunchy (soggy) taco was just thrown in the one big mess of relleno, beans AND RICE and it didn't look eatable. The burrito was just o.k.
So I took the time to call the restaurant to just make them aware of the obvious downfall in their quality the last few months. "Nothing has changed. We make it exactly the same. If you want something special you have to ask. If you want your taco separate, you have to ask." Â (oh, like when we ask for all beans and we still get beans and rice?)
Anyway, I would never write such a scathing review without calling the restaurant first in hopes of some glimmer of hope and redemption on their part. Â Nope, I think their original 2 stars turned into 1 because of my conversation with them.
OK... back to my original favorite.... Las Quesalas Cafe in PD on Hwy 111.
I'm always skeptical of strip mall restaraunts, and rightly so in this case. You can do better than this with all of the other Mexican places so ubiquitous in the valley.
The carnitas were way too greasy, not in a good way at all. The next meal I ordered (shoulda never came back), was a torta, a torta with a slice of good old processed American cheese on top. WTF? Plus I thought the food came out way too fast. Better than way to slow, but made me wonder why. Then the waitress wasn't really all that on top of anything either, but we got by. Probably would avoid next time.
Oh, gawd, this was just crap. Â Took an hour to get dinner on the table. When I inquired to the delay, was informed "everyone ordered at once". Â Huh, only one couple has come in the last 30 minutes and the kitchen has only sent out 6 plates. Â Only about a third of the tables were occupied. Â How long does this take. Â My Cilantro soup took 20 minutes. Â Once the food did arrive, pretty bland, slapped together, not a lot of flavor and salty. Â Also, Even through we waited an hour, had to constantly ask for more chips and salsa. Â However, before the first pitcher of Marg's was done, they were on it. Â At least they know where to make the money! Â Horrible place.
Review Source:Absolutely horrific service. Â Waited 45 minutes for a cup of soup, then were told after waiting more than an hour for dinner that our "appetizer" put us at the back of the line for dinner. Â Since when is ladling a bowl of soup prepping an appetizer? Â We never did get our dinner, bailed after an hour and a half. Â Don't waste your time here!
Review Source:This is the second time that my family and I went to this restaurant. Â The first time was pretty good however, today was a complete failure. Â We were seated immediately and ordered pretty quickly and after over an hour wait, the three adults had not received their food. Â The server advised that it was because one of us had ordered soup as an appetizer which supposedly pushed our order back behind three other tables. Â In my view and my wife's view, this was piss poor execution of expediting by the person in charge of the kitchen. Â Soup is definitely not something that takes a while to serve nor eat and there should not have been a 60+ minute wait for our food. Â After this delay and excuses (because that is what the server was giving) got the bill for the two children meals and drinks and paid for those and left without having the adult meals. Â The restaurant may call it what it wants however, Gordon Ramsey and Robert Irvine would have been a bit more bent that I was with the poor performance of this restaurant tonight.
Review Source:I went here with my son and elderly parents a few days ago and I would have to say the overall experience was not great. The waiter took a long time to get back to us after we asked for a few more minutes to look at our menus (which happens a lot of places, so not such a big deal), but more importantly, the food kind of sucked. The cheese inside My cheese enchiladas was not melted, and our refried beans were so salty my son would not eat them. Overall, Mexican food should be a lot better than this, especially in CA. Try the Chinese food place across the street - we had a much better meal there.
Review Source:We stopped in for a quick lunch. It is a nice place, small but clean and quaint. The staff was very friendly. The chips and salsa were quite tasty, although the salsa w ahit thin for my taste. The entrees were also good, the carne asada burrito was strong and the salsa verde I asked for on e side was spot on. My fiancé had tamales, one of which was amazing, the pepper and cheese, but the chicken one was rather bland.
Overall would recommend and return. Give them some business, they deserve it.
It's California, so the measuring stick for Mexican fare should be more stringent. In that case, Los Pepes suffers. I've eaten better Mexican food elsewhere in the Golden State.
The staff was very nice. They accomodated shrimp tacos for me, which wasn't on the menu at all. For that I was thankful, because it was decent. The other dish was not so good, essentially a pretty dry chicken burrito.
Looking for an authentic mexican restaurant....read some reviews and showed up....but was disappointed. Nothing authentic but the water they serve.
The atmosphere was nice. The service was so so. The chips were stale. The food was edible but nothing spectacular. The tacos were deep fried waaay to crunchy. They give you one scoop of rice like the size of a small ice cream scoop. The beans were dry. We paid $73 for 4 peeps. I'm kinda wishing we went to El Ranchito fast food mexican place down the road for probably less than half that cost and better food.
My co-worker and I were trying to find some good places to eat while we were in town for work. Â We decided that this place sounded decent and we are always up for Mexican food.
The atmosphere when we got there was very festive. Â Lots of cheery people waiting in the lobby. Â We found out that it was so busy because the Palm Springs Film Festival was going on. Â Though after waiting for about half an hour, it got a tad comical. Â There wasn't enough room for all of us to stand in the waiting area. Â There was a lot of moving this way and that way as more people showed up. Â And I think we were the youngest people there by a good 30 years! ;)
The salsa was very good which we thought was a good sign at first. Â It had a kick but not too much. Â I ordered the carnitas platter and my co-worker got the combo plate with a cheese enchilada and a beef taquito. Â We were disappointed. Â :( My carnitas was dry and the refried beans were flat. Â The rice was fine but nothing too special. Â I guess this is what happens when you live in Santa Ana. :D Good Mexican food can be hard to find elsewhere... :P
Overall, service was great but the food was just okay.
Order the food, but don't order liquor. Â Watched them poor drinks while picking up to go on a number of occasions, there is a breath of tequilla and even less orangy liquors in their margies. Â It must be how they make their money. Â Their food is good, particularly the prime rib, but get it to go and buy your own bottle!
Review Source:although we were a large group (10) it still shouldn't take more than an hour to be served. I used to cook in a Mexican restaurant in college so I know that most of the food is already prepared. I had the Halibut that was pretty tasty but the rice and beans were blah. It was also a small portion for $20. my daughter ordered the ground beef taco with just Spanish rice. usually when you hold the beans and veggies most of the time they give you a little more rice. Not here. just a tiny scoop of rice and the ground beef taco. Oh the first time it came out a chicken taco and the second time it was a shredded beef taco but lucky for her the third times the charm! My water glass sat empty for most of the meal because refills where hard to get. The wait staff was confused and easily distracted. While filling water glasses our waiter stopped and ran to the kitchen for something else. crazy. I would save your money and walk next door to Grill a burger!
Review Source:The atmosphere was definitely older local crowd that knew the staff... Â So well it was my girlfriend and I on date night... And not sure what the waitress deal was? Long day or what but not very enthusiastic... Very lackluster at best....Need to watch your own commercials and pickup some "ENERGY" Â Food was OK.. at best... As competitive as the valley is with Mexican food... We chose shrimp dishes. Rice is good.. Everything elso was AVG. at best?? Â This Place is probably permanently removed from our places to go.. Sorry.
Review Source:The queso fundido was better than I expected, but it was still just melted cheese with tortillas on the side. At least it was mostly real cheese and not Whiz.
I left most of my mole poblano behind. I was hungry, so I took a few bites. But it was terrible,. I don't know what was wrong, but it was awful mole. (I love mole, and this was far from my first experience with it.)
The bf got the fish special, and he thought it was okay. i found the fish to be a bit too mushy and the sauce too heavy. He tried my mole and was turned off as well.
At $12 per entree, I won't be giving them a second chance.
Wife and I ate hear the other night.
It's a nice little family Mexican restaurant. Â They do have a full bar and margaritas start at $7.75
We had queso fundido as an appetizer and it was real good, and fattening. Â The flour tortillas are excellent !!! Â Also ask for their hot sauce. Â I prefer it over the salsa.
Rest of the food was pretty good. Â Had a chile relleno that was pretty good. Â The guy next to us had carne asado burrito looked real good.
All in all a good spot, I would go back.
Like this little Mexican place well hidden on the road in the mall seated right away(wasn't busy for a weeknight) started with Margs which were good but not potent, ordered chicken enchiladas came w/usual rice refried and was perfect portion for little eaters like me the hubby inhaled 2 soft tacos all was good still needed to toss a couple of drops of Tabasco on to spice it up, service great and priced reasonable for two I loved the quiet atmosphere after being in some noisy restaurants this past week this by far was the best for talking eating and relaxing thanks PEPE
Review Source:Since, I was staying around the area I thought I give Los Pepes a try. I did a take out of carne asada burrito. It was pretty good. I was disappointed with the size of the burrito. I thought it was on the small size. Rice and refried beans were included with the take out. Rice was fluffy and had a lot of flavor. Refried beans weren't bad. Chips and salsa was OK. Overall, I would give this place a 3.5 stars and happy with the food. I have to deduct .5 star for the size of the burrito.
Review Source:Prime Rib Carne Asada Rocks!!!
So after seeing several TV commercials we thought of trying Los Pepes since they're right across from us on Country Club. We had high expectations comparing it to our favorite Mexican in Palm Springs. I was pleasantly surprised.
The chips and salsa were just OK, but the prime rib carne asada was really tasty. It came with rice, beans, guacamole, cream and salsa. They gave a sizable portion of the beef, and of course I shared with D, who got the mole crepe, which he thought was OK. But I'm raving about the carne asada which was nicely done medium and well flavored. The cadillac margarita was pretty good too.
When we return I will definitely have the prime rib carne asada.
