Id give it half of a star if I could. Flavorless fish, tan "buttermilk" ranch, and the tiniest & saltiest fries ever. Almost forgot - take a look at these burnt to hell onion rings. I guess this is the place to go for low quality, cheap food. Steer clear is my advice as there are better fish in the sea. Literally.

A divey bar in the midst of Black Rock, with a no-frills atmosphere, but a damn killer fish fry (and a pretty good french onion soup). When I got in here around 2:30p for lunch, I was the only patron here and the bartender was more than excited to serve me. I ordered a fish fry (and I was really happy they had one on a Tuesday!) and a bit of french onion soup.

While I was waiting for the food to come out, I gotta say the dirty floor, flies buzzing around made me feel a little uneasy. I don't frequent these kind of places too often, they had the door to the bar wide open (I'm not sure if they were trying to save electricity by having natural light come in or just vent the place out..?)

The soup came out first and it was pretty good, but simple and uninspiring. They used a pre-made beef broth and added some onions, cheese and bread to it and voila. Tasted like store-bought beef broth with some nice bits of cheese and bread floating inside. Then the fish fry came out.....

Let me just say, it's definitely one of the best fish fries I've ever had. Huge, beer-battered, just the right amount of crispiness to it, house made tartar sauce, cole slaw and macaroni salad. Also came with a heap of fries (which were a little strange because they added a lot of pepper to them and I wasn't used to eating fries that made my mouth burn so much). It was probably the first time in years when I could not finish a whole plate of food. I was impressed. This place is pretty great for the fish fry (and did I mention it was only $7.99?), but the atmosphere just didn't make for a pleasant dining experience. I'll try again in the winter sometime, maybe all the flies will have died off by then..

Okay, so this place isn't glamorous or even up to date, but I am giving them a solid three because I had one of the most killer fish fries ever here when I first moved into Black Rock. A GIGANTIC piece of fish (basically a whole fish, boned, cleaned, de-tailed and beheaded - off with her head!) with excellent breading, large sides (they had a choice between cole slaw, pasta salad or potato salad - I got the latter two, very good), bread and butter and I believe they gave me the option of soup/or salad, all for about $10. The service was prompt and friendly, the dining area is quaint and old school, I had loads of leftovers (reheat the fish in the oven). I've never drank at the bar but it strikes me as a "locals" kind of place - average neighborhood bar, nothing special, nothing bad. They are only open for food certain hours so call ahead.
