Oh my God! What a treasure in the middle of nowhere!
I drove by and decided to stop last weekend. The sign outside said that they had the best reuben and donuts in PA.
I had the reuben and donuts. They didn't lie!
Mamie's had the best bakery selection I have ever seen. You must go to Mamie's!
This is the best breakfast place hands down. My boyfriend and me we were celebrating our three year anniversary and he surprised me and drove 3 hours there just to eat breakfast. We have been there when we visit Raystown Lake but this time the trip was only for their food. It was definitely worth the trip.
There is nothing that isn't amazing there. The monkey bread is to die for . Â The donuts are so good that I cannot eat donuts anywhere else because they don't even compare.
Besides the food the atmosphere is great. It is a great family environment and the staff is always friendly and eager to accommodate . By far the best food ever ( this is not an exaggeration )
This place is amazing! We went there on the way home from Raystown Lake! There were four of us that were intrigued by the best doughnut in PA signs! My best friend and I love Reubans as well, and they had signs that said they had the best of those as well.  We were pleasantly surprised when we came inside.  There were baked goods everywhere in a help yourself kind of style.  The doughnuts were amazing looking from birthday cakes ones, s'mores ones, coconut cream, creme brûlée, and maple bacon! They had oatmeal cream pies, cherry cookies, apple dumplings!! An amazing amount of mouth watering baked goods!
We decided to eat first and you order at a counter and they bring you your food to the table. Â Some of us ordered breakfast and some if us lunch. Â I went for the Reuban with homemade rye bread! Unbelievably large and just soooo delicious! I got the sweet potato fries but we also got fresh cut french fries! Sooo yummy! One of my friends got angel food cake french toast, with lemon curd and fresh fruit! There were big chunks of fresh cut pineapple, strawberries, and the plumpest blueberries. Â The woman who took our order brought out extra lemon curd that had been freshly whipped! We devoured it! Sooo good! My husband got a blt breakfast sandwich with cheese, fried egg, the best garden tomato, and thick cut bacon! Simply amazing! Â They had mason jars of fresh squeezed lemonade some infused with strawberry that were absolutely delicious! The lemonade was tart with just the slightest sweetness! Perfect!
After we ate we had to get doughnuts! My husband got the maple bacon one.. It was thick filled with maple cream in the inside, glazed with maple on top, and crispy bacon covering it! Decadent!! Unbelievably good! I got the creme brûlée, which was filled with the brûlée! Like eating two desserts at one sitting! Loved it! We also got cherry filled cookies and cinnamon rolls.
What a little gem this place is! The staff all so friendly! The decor simply delightful and inspirational! Wish this place was closer to home.. Or maybe not because I would weight way more than I do! Haha
Mamie's offers the best breakfast ever. Â Period. Â The omelets are loaded with all that is good in the world, and are served with wonderful homemade bread. Â The French toast is made with that same, wonderful bread, and the pancakes are a work of art. Â I am sure their lunches are of similar quality, but we have not made it past the breakfast menu to try. Â One caveat - Mamie's is no longer a well kept secret, you may have to wait for seating for a large group.
Review Source:Mamie's is excellent! From the fresh made doughnuts to the delicious Berry's Open Face Steak Breakfast sandwich.. you can't go wrong at Mamie's. Martinsburg at one point didn't have much to offer, but now thanks to places like Mamies.. there is a whole new reason to swing into this charming farm community. This place is doing everything in a really great way! It's one of those places you go to....and will definitely be back too!
Review Source:Yelped around for a bite to eat (besides the overpriced Marina) while at Raystown Lake Lodge. Found Mamie's and we stopped on the way home. None of our group of ten had anything but praise to share. I had a meat & cheese omelet with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, wheat toast, FRESH squeezed OJ, plus, there were 7 coffees to choose from in the standard issue hotel type pumpers. I recommend "Mamie's Blend", a medium roast with a smooth finish which goes great with the AMAZING donuts, cakes, muffins, and fritters. I would not even consider a trip to Raystown without stopping here for breakfast at some point. Very accommodating and friendly staff, fair prices, and great food. Highly recommended!!
Review Source:Mr. Local Eats writer covers it all. I loved sitting at Mamie's for three hours doing work between appointments, free wi-fi, an absolutely amazing Reuben sandwich (1/2 sizes available!), delicious cream of potato soup, and locals coming in and out. The bustling, clean cafe is fantastic, charming, friendly, and a great find in this small PA village. Oh, and the bakery - unbelievably tempting, but I was watching the waistline.
Review Source:I heard about Mamie's from a friend who lives in the area and said it is a must for the best baked goods around. Â I decided to give Mamie's a try when I was already in Hollidaysburg, as it was only another 10 minutes out of my way. Â
When I got there, there were tons of pastries, cookies, cupcakes, doughnuts, cakes, "gobs" and other assortments lining the open shelves of the bakery as well as a display cooler. Â Being that it was near closing time on a Monday afternoon, I was surprised at how much inventory they had. Â There was no one around, so I just browsed through. Â I was also surprised at how the items were wrapped - on large trays with Saran Wrap over them. Â Unfortunately, half of the trays were open from people getting out assorted treats and the food wasn't even covered...a large turnoff for me. Â Also, for the area, the prices were unusually high (for a less than good product).
I decided to opt for a cupcake platter of "Sunflower Cupcakes" (aka vanilla cupcakes decorated like sunflowers). The platter was $12 for half a dozen or so cupcakes, so roughly $2 per cupcake. Â Being the cupcake connoisseur that I am (considering the DC cupcake craze) I was hugely let down by these cupcakes. Â First of all, they were dry and crumbly, with no moisture whatsoever. Â Second, the bottoms were near-burnt, and third, the "buttercream" icing was straight from a can. Â There is no way that you can make such a generic-tasting icing that is pure WHITE, as butter adds a light yellowish brown tint to any icing, and vanilla does the same. Â Maybe its just because I'm used to some really, really good cupcakes, but Mamie's treats were a huge letdown, especially for the prices. Â Half a dozen cupcakes in DC will run $15, and I paid that much in the backwoods of Pennsylvania for the worst cupcakes I've ever eaten in my life.
I won't be coming back.
There are so many positives here I don't know where to start.
The baked goods look amazing! I say look because their portions are large and food so good I didn't get to try them, but they looked incredible.
Everything is made there an fresh. It's a very homey feel. You grab a cup from the collection of mugs and get your own coffee for example.
They spend their money in the kitchen, and it shows. I had the stuffed French Toast which was decadent! The omelettes are overstuffed and looked incredible. The pancakes were light and fluffy and extraordinarily delicious.
The coffee was roasted locally and was clearly fresh. They had Sumatra, Kenya, Mexican, and their own unremarkable blend. The Kenya was the favorite at my table.
This place is an amazing treat and is by far the best place to eat for many, many miles.
An Excerpt from my book going LOCAL!
I heard about this place from an unlikely but very reliable source, my friends Mark and Jeff, the Beer Geeks. Some may assume that my esteemed colleagues don't frequent "dry" establishments but, they do and that's what makes these dudes geeks to begin with - they appreciate, embrace, and support the indie spirit whether it's wet, dry, baked or brewed. Beer advocates as well as wine connoisseurs have a knack for sniffing out unique, cool and cozy places - Mamie's has all those adjectives and more!
I arrived one sunny morning aboard The Steed to find Mamie's Café located along the main drag of Martinsburg in an old building with windows along the entire front. A vivid red and white striped awning hangs high above the sidewalk and black ironwork flanks the steps leading in. I noticed that it was filled with people at tables and the look was subdued with colors soft and muted in the café, but the bakery side was bright and bustling with folks standing in lines holding bags of goodies. The décor here was of stainless steel, ceramic, baker's racks and bread baskets. This was a cool place for sure so I walked in.
As soon as I did I knew why Mark and Jeff told me to check this place out! You know how some places take awhile to warm up to? Not here, not for me. As soon as I entered Mamie's I caught the sweetness (and it wasn't the enormous rack of sticky buns either) and knew I was in a great place. High ceilings paneled with decorative tin, white walls and white and red checkered tile floors. These floors were covered with racks and racks of fresh baked goods, cakes, muffins, pies, doughnuts, cookies, whoppie pies (or "gobs" as they're called in this neck of the woods), and of course, those luscious gooey treats - sticky buns.
I ordered a latte and saw an opening in the brick wall that separated the two large spaces that I noticed from outside. I walked through and was totally impressed by the décor and feel. Luckily a high table opened up by the front windows and I sat down and began to write in my sketchbook to make notes of the cool vibe. After a bit of writing and seeing all the delicious food being served around me I decided it was time for a late breakfast.
The woman making a fruit tart behind the counter took my order but her hands were deep in dough so when she called on her daughter Valerie to help me I realized this must be Mamie herself. I asked her and she said she was the owner but her name was Karen and Mamie was her grandmother.
I returned to my table and within a few minutes my veggie omelet arrived, hot and accompanied by Karen's homemade bread which was thick and toasted to perfection. The omelet practically melted in my mouth - I think it might be the best one I've ever had. It was huge but super light and fluffy, full of veggies and cheese and damn good! I settled in with my breakfast and remaining latte, continued writing and enjoying la vie at Mamie's.
After a two hour breakfast, I paid my bill and introduced myself. Karen held out to me the most wonderfully gooey, soft and warm, brown sugar and cinnamon coated hunk of goodness I ever tasted - her famous sticky bun - for free! She didn't even know why I was there at this point, just my name. She just must have been proud of her buns! Ha ha.
As we chatted I told her about my purpose there and it was all she could do to talk and keep up with the folks coming in and out for baked goods, pastries, breakfast and lunch. She did tell me that the reason she is there is because she had always dreamed of opening a bakery and café but never could take the risk. After loosing both her husband and son to cancer she realized life was just too fleeting and risks where nothing compared to the joys of life. She decided to make her dream come true and live life while she could.
A few years back Harvard University did a survey of folks over 80. They were all asked if they were to do it all over again what would they do differently. The number one response was "take more risks." Karen Wyland took her dreams, rolled them out, added a cup of passion, two tablespoons of courage, a pinch of risk, a dash of grit and a whole lotta love. Then, warmed it all in her heart and offers it up everyday for you and me at Mamie's Café.
Enjoy!
