Pros:
I've played in the orchestra for Johnny Mathis for the last three years. Â I drive quite a bit to do it, and it's one of my favorite gigs of the year. Â Johnny still sounds absolutely amazing at 78, and the comedian who comes with him is pretty funny, too. Â I've also seen the Liverpool Legends show once, and we had a good time. Â They are a legit Beatles cover band.
Cons:
After playing the last three years, here's my impression.
The stage crew can get a little cranky with us, but nothing awful. If the orchestra gets a dressing room (one year we were scolded and told to leave our cases/belongings anywhere backstage), it's the older ones that haven't been updated, but they are clean.
The Mansion is a little stingy with discounts. Â Last year, our operations manager was required to be at the show to supervise the musicians, yet he either had to wander around backstage or purchase a seat at face value. Â I called to ask the box office this year -- evidently the Mansion saves a block of seats for entertainers at a discounted rate; this has never been offered to us, even though there were several rows of seats in the balcony that were empty both nights of Johnny's show.
Overall:
As a musician-- I've had better gigs, I've had worse; I do love playing for Johnny.
As a patron-- it's a decent theater for Branson.
