Have you ever had a planned night out with friends, but then completely dropped everything for parents? Well, this is exactly how I ended up at Mark's Sports Bar and Grill.
Ok, so let's be real here. This place is extremely smoky for cigarettes, semi-divey and certainly doesn't have the feel of a sports bar. I think the only sporty thing about it is the electronic golf arcade game they have settled beside the restrooms, which is ok -- minus the stench luring from the bathroom aftermath.
The whole purpose of this visit was because my boyfriend's dad called and said, "Hey, come out to play poker with us and I will buy you drinks all night." Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet! It was Easter weekend holiday. It should be about family, right?
We get there, order food and drinks and settle at the poker table. J's dad was providing the cards and poker chips. I had not played poker probably since I was a tween or even younger since learning from my brothers while camping one summer. I was able to remember the basic of the basics, but my lack of knowledge on the blinds and overall complete understanding had vanished.
After a few hands, I finally got the grasp of it. We took a break where I was able to eat my cheese burger and bbq chips. I had initially had asked for a cheese burger with ketchup, lettuce, and mayo with bbq chips, but some how she interpreted that for a plain burger with cheese and a side of bbq sauce. How did this happen? Completely beyond me to know. Turns out it was pretty good though. Bonus points on the food -- now subtract the bonus for lack of writing down my order properly.
I ended up 2 having margaritas during the whole night. Drinks were weak, however, they were tasty for having them at a bar that is probably more used to pouring a Budlight from tap.
Out of 8 players and a game of poker, I managed to kick my boyfriend out when he made the shameful mistake of going 'all in' when I had the upper hand. His mom and I ended up being the last 2 and decided to split the pot. I walked away with a whole $10! His dad and I made an agreement that if he bought my way into the game, then he would get half. Alright, fair enough. Jason's mom got $10 and his dad got $20.
To conclude this night, which mind you this will always be memorable, my boyfriend's mom and I sang 'Bitch' by Meredith Brooks in karaoke. It was most definitely epic. Side note - this place has karaoke every Friday and Saturday night.
Lovely night, and a semi-decent place for the St. Charles County crowd. I don't think I'd ever go out of my way to come here again, but for a game of poker and Jason's parents -- say when and where and I will be there.
Cheap drinks, games, food, bands & karaoke...
The newest sports bar recreation of the old dive pool hall location... Â With few TVs, the sports bar name is a stretch... Â They do offer food ($2 shrimp kabobs)... There is a stage with a dance floor... I think this is another identity crisis.
The bartender said it best "we try to make everybody happy".
There still is plenty of pool tables, steel & plastic tipped darts plus a lawn darts, air hockey, shuffleboard, Buck Hunter, pinball & golden tee to play. Â They also offer poker nights & karaoke so check website... I am sorry facebook page.
The jukebox switched from country to R&B to classic rock toMetalica. Â The bartender said the cover bands that perform on weekends (check facebook updates) play about the same range.
I will come back. Â They offer Sam Adams Seasonal, Blue Moon, Amber Bock and the "beer with drinkability" Bud Light 16 oz pints for $2 & $8 pitchers DURING ALL BUSINESS HOURS!
FYI (WI-Fi has a code 2454862592 ... Why the code?)
What is funny is the owner bragged about how quickly he sold out of the daily specials - pork steaks, brisket, corned beef, chili & his "dad's recipe" meatlaof, Â BUT... none was on the menu....
IDENTITY CRISIS!!!
