This place really hit the spot after spending the weekend backpacking in Shenandoah! Eating dehydrated food for every meal for two days can get old fast. I had seen a sign for Marshall Diner on the drive up I-66 and it was in the back of my mind all weekend. We stopped in and it was crowded so we parked in the back. I ordered the Eggs Marshall (like eggs benedict but with smoked salmon instead of ham). My husband ordered a large breakfast platter with all the fixins and loved it. The food was good, service was fast and friendly, and the price was right. We just might have to make stopping here on the way home from the mountains a new tradition!
Review Source:Probably not a bad place overall but my 1st impressions were kinda on the low rent divey side.
I stopped in for an egg sandwich since it's a quick and easy on and off I-66.
I got a fried egg sandwich on whole wheat toast. It was OK, nothing too special but adequate for a quick meal on the go.
Better than a MacDriveby
Wife and I stopped here today while out riding on the MC. Â She ordered the French Toast with two eggs and NO meat. Â She stated it twice and the lady repeated it back. Â Guess what showed up, smaller portion of FT and bacon AND sausage. Â Normally this wouldn't be an issue but the bacon and sausage here is anything but good. Â I ordered the pecan Waffle with bacon. Â Asked for the bacon to be crispy. Â It wasn't. Â It was limp and extremely greasy. Â I'm hesitant to send food back as the idea of it being adulterated always crosses my mind. Â I just won't go back here.
Review Source:A few friends and I went apple picking in the area, and once we were done, we needed some real food in our tummies. Yelping places around there were only a few options including Marshall Diner so we thought we'd give it a try.
Having never really visited a small town in the US, the street where Marshall Diner is located reminded me of American movies where small towns are pictured as having one diner and one dry clean with the town's name on the front of the door :D
The food was good, a bit on the greasy side, and the service nothing special. The prices were inexpensive to what you'd pay closer to the city.
If you're around here and want a cheap meal, then this is prolly a good spot.
How many bones would you like to find in your Hot Turkey Sandwich? Â How many globs of fat, how many small scraps of turkey that made the presentation of this mess look like something that was pulled off a turkey carcass 8 days after Thanksgiving dinner? Â Would you like dinner with an unidentified "off-smell" which seemed to have nothing to do with food? Â Would you like your side of mixed vegetables to be shiny with grease, but basically cold and crunchy? Â Does warm chicken vegetable soup with no taste at all sound good? Â Would you like to sit there for too long watching re-runs of the Monkees on the wall TV while the "cook" got this repast together?
If all this sounds really good to you, then do stop by Marshall Diner. Â Me? Â I could not leave this place fast enough.
It was ok, although I would have preferred a visit to Waffle House. Its odd placement in a strip mall is a little off putting. I ordered the sausage and gravy on biscuits and agree with the other poster about it not having any flavor. It wasn't terrible, but it certainly could have been much better. At the table next to mine however a gentleman was eating what looked like a club sandwich with steak fries and it looked quite good.
Review Source:"So far, the coffee is good."
That was about 5 minutes into the Marshall Diner experience. It didn't get any better. I don't like to give mediocre reviews, but I've got to tell you that this diner was barely that - mediocre.
The good - Service and $$. The waitress was genuinely nice and friendly. Â She promptly took my order and kept my coffee topped off. Also the prices were relatively inexpensive. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for.
The bad - Everything else. I wasn't impressed at all with the food. I ordered a Garden Omelet w/ home fries and toast. I had one taste of the home fries and left the rest. To me, they didn't even taste like potatoes. The omelet was "alright," I probably could have done better myself if allowed back in the kitchen. Â
I would suggest that if you're in the Marshall area, and you have a hankering for a good breakfast, Â just keep on driving past this diner, and head to the Old Salem Restaurant. At least they have a Southern Brunch Buffet on Sundays.
I went to the Marshall Diner once, about 3 months ago, so this review may be affected by what I recall (or don't recall).
I had a ham and cheese omelet with home fries and wheat toast -- my normal diner breakfast. Â It was about a three egg omelet, somewhat generously filled, and had nice texture. Â The cheese -- which I believe is the make-or-break component -- was a mild cheddar; it wasn't anything special, but was more flavorful than ordinary tangy American. Â The ham (diced) was fairly ordinary, but it thankfully wasn't too salty. Â The home fries were adequate, but could have been crispier. Â The toast was your basic grocery store wheat bread.
Overall, a solid, but not particularly remarkable, diner breakfast.
I actually ate here twice yesterday, once for breakfast then again for lunch; only due to convenience because of my day. I thought the breakfast was just okay, I ordered the 3 egg omelette with bacon and cheese with a side order of hashbrowns. The omelette got points for being very warm however the pound or so of cheese on it took all the flavor of the egg away, so it was more like a cheese omelette(is that even possible) with egg and bacon. However the hashbrowns were cooked exactly to my likings crispy on the edges and soft on the inside, I completely destroyed those.
Came back later in the day for lunch and ordered the Monterey Burger, which was a cheeseburger with sauteed onions on grilled rye bread and came with fries. The sandwich was surprisingly good but the fries were a little cold an undercooked. Overall the service was really good and if I were in this area again I would more than likely eat here, although there did not seem like too many other choices around. Not worth a drive from DC but worth it if your passing by and hungry.
After the debacle at Main Street Deli, driving further west on Route 55 brings you to the Marshall Diner. I'm thinking to myself - Diner coffee! And maybe some breakfast as I have not eaten anything today - it's about 11:00 am - so this is a bit of a late breakfast.
I go and sit down - the waitress brings me a menu - the front cover advertises a couple of specials - creamed chipped beef or sausage gravy and biscuits. I've not had Sausage Gravy and Biscuits in a terrible long time - so I order that, along with two eggs over easy, and a side of bacon.
Now in my humble opinion - there are certain things diners need to and should do well to be considered a diner - and traditional, greasy American breakfast foods rate high on the capabilities list. You need to be good at things like Corned Beef Hash, Hash Browns, Sausage Gravy, pancakes, and such.
This Sausage gravy could have been anything. It looked like Sausage gravy, it had the right consistency - but it had almost no flavor. It was like a flour paste/gravy. I loaded it up with Black pepper, salt, and hot sauce in order to give it some flavor. A big fat zero stars on the Sausage gravy. I sure hope it's not like this all the time. I sure won't stop in and order it again unless someone else comes along and tells me it has changed.
The fried eggs were decent, as was the bacon, and two cups of coffee, which elevates it up to two stars.
