Cheap drinks and an authentic Whiskey Row experience are what Matt's has to offer. We were there pretty early so I didn't experience the crowds or cover charge that the other reviewers complained about. But I did get to see some cowboys and cowgirls two-steppin' out on the dance floor. We went with a group and everyone had a good time. Even though its not a place I would usually visit (not a country fan), it was a fun night.
Review Source:This place is really cool. We were here for our anniversary and had a blast. Fun to watch everyone dance, band was amazing. Beer was very cold. Solid 3.5 stars. This would be a 5 star but the problem was the fights that broke out while we were there, the bar tenders were not friendly and they are a cash only bar. With that said, we will be back.
Review Source:It's a fun atmosphere here--we stopped in to take a look around and enjoy a drink even though we don't get into country music. There is a lot of history to this place and it definitely typifies the kinds of bars you expect to find on Whiskey Row.
There is a large dance floor where lots of people are having fun, and the band playing was quite good. It seems that a lot of country bands put a lot of work and energy into their stage presence, which is something a lot of bands of other genres miss. You can't just stand up there and stare at your boots--people want to be entertained! I don't know the name of the band, but they were entertaining.
Check this place out, even if country isn't your thing--I think you'll have a good time.
Other reviews to the drinks, ambiance and general nature of the place are accurate.
This is exactly what I picture when I think of a Whiskey Row bar. I like the history, all the old wood, and being born and raised in the West, this is what I grew up with.
When it comes down to it, I don't exactly blend with cowboys and bikers - but we don't cross paths, either.
Decent bar - though I am not sure how skilled the bartenders are for anything beyond beer, shots and highballs. No matter, really. When on Whiskey Row, drink as the regulars do! :)
OTB is definitely a plus, even if The Fantastic Mr. "It's Complicated" didn't win on his wager. Sometimes a Saturday drinking and playing the ponies in a new town is just about as good as it gets.
Matt's is a Whiskey Row bar, so that's that. The best part about Matt's is the stage above the dance floor. There is almost always a live band (except on Thursday nights, do NOT go on Thursday nights) and although I don't love country, they are usually pretty good. They also are a cash only bar. Thursday nights are hip-hop night, and it's not great. At all. Just wait til the weekend. Get dressed up, get in the spirit, it's fun.
Review Source:I'm pretty amazed. I love horse racing. I can watch AND place bets at Matt's Saloon! I was hankering to watch The Kentucky Derby...Yavapai downs is closed for now, so this was the next best, without being at Churchill Downs of course. It was a great atmosphere, and the bar was even making mint juleps. I sure can't complain! -and I love that dogs are allowed at Matt's!
Review Source:Horrible Service, surly bartender, over priced drinks.
We stopped into Matt's Saloon for a quick drink. Nothing fancy just a couple shots of Jameson on the rocks. The bartender immediately looked angry that my friend and I had walked through the door. She loudly told a near by customer that she was hungover from the night before and acted like we were completely ruining her night by simply breathing the same air. She served us out shots with a huff and then charged me $15.00 for the two drinks. I didn't dare ask her if she had made a mistake; I didn't want to risk having my face ripped off. I have been a bartender for several years so I'm familiar with prices and service. Needless to say I won't be going back to Matt's Saloon ANY time soon.
I paid $3.75 for a bottle of Coors Light (w/o the tip.) Â I thought it was going to be cheaper, too. Â No cover charge, and the band was very good. Â Just enough room to dance. Â Haven't seen individuals dancing freestyle in a country dancing place before, but then I haven't been to one in quite a while. Â Makes it hard to move around when the dance floor was full. Â Wide variety of people and ages. Â Mostly well-behaved, a bunch of people were drunk. Â Overall, I enjoyed it.
Review Source:Hmmmm..... how to describe Matt's Saloon. Â How about WEIRD? I was in Prescott for a conference, and a large group of us decided to go to Matt's. You have to pay a cover charge to get in, but the drinks are cheap ($1.00 domestic draft bottles). Sweet. Â But the crowd and the music, WEIRD, and I mean WEIRD!! Â All they played was hip-hop music (which sucks) and got to watch very weird women. Â One was 2 feet high. Â Most were ugly, and it seemed most wanted to make out with each other. Thank God I was with some beautiful women, otherwise I'd would have been out of there. Maybe I hit Matt's on an off night, or maybe the the crowd decided to leave their houses located in abandoned mine shafts and try to rejoin the human race. Â If you are into fat women with lot's of jailhouse tats, Matt's is the place for you. Â Enjoy!
Review Source:Matt's was our first stop on our Whisky Row Pub Crawl. Â Good service, cheap drinks and good live music make for a great night. Â One of the best features was the outdoor smoking area with propane heaters - made 30 degrees a little more pleasant. Â If we hadn't been trying to hit up lot's of places, I would have loved to stay and gotten a little dancing in. Â They are on my list of must try again for my next Prescott trip.
Review Source:For the real "Whiskey Row" experience, and a few ice cold longnecks, Matt's Saloon is the place. You'll find some genuine cowboys and genuinely cute cowgirls. The Bar has a history, as do most of it's patrons, and with the help of a few cocktail you might get a good tail (oops....tale ) or two. Amador, a fixture on Whiskey Row, has been behind the bar for more than ten years and knows how to serve a great drink quickly, even when the bar is three deep with Rodeo fans. Matt & Marco, who are surprisingly young to have made such a success out of this "Landmark", are friendly and mingle through the crowd on a good night. And Marco's family recipe tamales are the real thing.....but are only seen around the holidays. The staff is professional and handle the random punch or shove with a show of force that quickly moves out to the sidewalk.
Say "hey" to Jessica if you get the chance....she the one in the black cowboy hat, and watch for some great bands that tour the area and stop at Matt's for some real music, both kinds...Country AND Western. Thursday is dollar beer night and the crowd loves hip-hop, so leave your hats at the door unless you wear it backwards.
