I decided to have my 26th birthday at Mavericks. Â I wanted to try something different and I figured a country bar close to home was the way to go. Â I called ahead and told them that I would be coming in with a group of about ten people and they told me that they would reserve two tables for us and that I wouldn't have to pay cover since it was my birthday.
It think it was a $6 cover since there was a live band, which was actually fun top 40s country music. Â They also had line dancing lessons, but as I mentioned in my review of Cadillac Ranch, I suck at line dancing and most of the people who come for the lessons are already good line dancers. Â I felt a little stupid out there with them even though I grew up in Tennessee where line dancing was a part of our gym curriculum. Â Eventually, my girlfriends and I decided that we were going to dance the way we wanted and had some fun.
The drinks here are fairly cheap and you can order bar food pretty late. Â I wish there was a younger crowd here, it was mostly older for the line dancing lessons and then the place was empty about midnight.
I want to return for a nuts and bolts night soon!
I was excited to have a local country bar again and couldn't wait to go. I got together a large group and we went last night. We paid 17 full cover charges, 3.50 for beer, and 2.75 for a coke. Not outrageous but I certainly don't feel as though I got my money's worth. The staff was somewhere between rude and disconnected and the music was pitiful at best. They played about 12 country songs, 4 Brad Paisley, 3 Blake Shelton, 2 Sugarland, and of course, 1 Taylor Swift song. After that, the music
devolved into some mix of dance infused with a few bad Lynard Skynard mash-ups. Needless to say, not a great experience. Maybe I'll try again in the future.
The place just opened up three months ago and is one of the best places in the area to go country line dancing! (If you are familiar with the scene, you will know that Sundance Saloon used to be here. Eventually it became Neon Moon, and now it's Mavericks -- bought by back the original owner!) I was finally able to take my husband line dancing last night and I was excited to go again since I've only been once before somewhere else. We also went with two other couples whom had never been line dancing before except for one of the ladies.
The place is huge inside -- there's a large dance floor and a stage for the DJ, along with spacious seating. I might even argue that there isn't enough seating for the people who want to sit and watch, but hey, what's the fun in sitting when you could join in with the dancing!? An area in the back had some games and a restaurant, but I didn't venture over there. The food smelled amazing, though. Apparently the grill opened for the first time while we were there! I also enjoyed the festive holiday lights and decor throughout the bar.
As for a cover charge? Wednesday nights, ladies enter for free and men are $3. Thursdays everyone is $2. Fridays and Saturdays have a $5 cover charge. It's worth it! This particular Friday night was Nuts and Bolts night (first Fridays of the month). Guys and girls were given nuts and bolts to match up; winners got prizes. I'm not sure what they were but my friend managed to find another person in the bar that matched hers! This game is a great way to meet other people in the bar, not that you would have a hard time -- everyone was really friendly and so many guys were willing to help us learn the dances. Â The music was great -- a mix of current country hits, some 90s dance hits, and some timeless pieces. The crowd was a mix of older, experienced couples (40s-60s) and younger people like me that were looking for a great time different than traditional bars in the area. By 11pm, the older couples had filtered out and the floor was more open.
The only complaint I had is that when I arrived, I ordered water because water is supposed to be free. Turns out my water cost $.25 more than the vodka drinks on special! I was a little annoyed about this, but the waitress had no problem swapping out my water order for a vodka lemonade -- which was really strong. My husband's vodka and seven was strong too -- a sign they serve great drinks! I just wish the water was free, especially at the end of the night when I was parched! I guess I could have tried another waitress or gone up to the bar to ask. Oh well.
We arrived around 8pm and left at 12:30am because our feet were exhausted. My husband and I are planning to come back here for the free line dancing lessons in the future (Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays before the rest of the crowd arrives). This place will definitely be our choice to go line dancing!
