Great local bar, everyone is super friendly and very helpful. They make a strong little margarita, and the place has a lot to look at. You mite be skeptical about going in because it sort of looks like and office building on the corner of a residential area, but doesn't like an adventure.
Review Source:Medicinal Purposes has potential, but they need to consider a few changes... I had lunch here on a Saturday with my wife. Â On a Saturday, early afternoon, we expected a few more patrons, but it was just my wife and I, plus one other couple. Â Walking in I was pleased by the decor, a nicely remodeled, open space with a bar and a few tables on the lower level, and additional seating on a mezzanine level a few feet above the main floor. Â There is also a small, dog-friendly outdoor porch area. Â The ambiance is what I would call cajun chic' (if there is such a thing), and it felt very comfortable.
I asked about their draft beer selections; they don't have any draft beers, only bottled. Â Strike one. Â They do have a good variety of bottled beer, but St. Arnold's was the only local (Houston area) beer. Â They do have Shiner and a few other craft beers, plus a good variety of national and imports. Â We were told they were still expanding their beer selection.
The menu has some interesting selections. Â I chose a more traditional pulled pork sandwich and the included side dish (potato chips). Â The pork sandwich was good quality pork and tasty barbecue sauce, on a fresh po' boy bun. Â A pleasant surprise was that the potato chips were freshly cooked and hot, a nice touch!
My wife had the bratwurst, also on a nice, toasted and fresh po' boy bun, with sauerkraut and a unique, tasty mustard on the side. Â She opted to upgrade to the homemade onion rings. Â The onion rings were made on site, were hot and fresh, but we agreed the breading missed the mark. It had a strange spice and was not crispy but surprisingly soft. Â Just not what I would expect in an onion ring.
The food is served in plastic baskets lined with paper and the mustard was served in a small plastic cup. Â The plastic baskets really seemed out of character for the nice decor and unique menu choices of this establishment. Â If the food had been served on real plates with the proper presentation it would have made a big difference in the overall experience. Strike two.
Bottom line, if you want decent food and a bottled beer, Medicinal Purposes is worth a try. Â They threw two strikes at me, but there is still a chance for a solid hit here. Â If the owners would make the investment to bring in some local/craft draft beers and present the food more appropriately, MPs could be an outstanding and well-needed neighborhood gathering spot in Galveston's UTMB district.
Great little local place in the downtown area of Galveston. We came in for a late lunch and really enjoyed ourselves.
We sat at the bar and they have huge comfy bar-stools. We were greeted right away and given paper menus that we could also take home. I noticed they have a large selection of bottled beer, so I ordered a Saint Arnold Summer Pils. Our bartender was friendly and conversed with us and told us what their specialty items were. I wasn't really hungry so I just ordered a baked potato and a side salad. Both were delicious and satisfying. The blue cheese dressing tasted homemade and fresh.
I did not venture outside to check out the patio, but they do have one. They also have specials for every day of the week, as well as happy hour specials. We really liked the vibe of this place. The owner/manager was actually there and that's always a good sign of someone who cares about their business. We will be back.
This place is great! I go there all the time for lunch and dinner. My husband works for UTMB so he gets a 15% discount because all UTMB employes, all Galveston cops, and Galveston fire department get 15% off! I have had just about everything on their menu and I have never had bad food or service! Thursday's is mine and my husbands favorite time to go because all beers are $2.50 from 6-close and the food special that night is the ribs which are amazing. My favorite thing on the menu though is their club sandwich it is amazing! I can make two meals off of it and it so cheep! LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PLACE! Also they have the best burger I have had on the island!
Review Source:As the manager noted, the bread cuts have been improved and my Philly cheese steak now stays in the bun, where it belongs. Overall, my husband and I noticed a general improvement in the quality of the food the last time we visited. This place has moved from 'Okay' to 'Yum' in my books. Kudos to the staff and management for taking feedback and looking at ways to improve their food quality. Also, I've heard good things about their appetizers (especially the fried pickles) from friends and colleagues, but have yet to try them since I usually can't even finish my fries.
Review Source:Was riding through the neighborhood and stumbled on this great place!
It opened about a month ago. Â They're open from 10am to 2am 7 days! In Galveston, that's rare. Â Lunch and dinner. Â American fare. Â Pub atmosphere. Jukebox(with good variety) ATM inside. Â Outdoor patio (pet friendly), full bar, no draft beer. Â Generous portion of very good food. Service was great. Â Price was good. Â A block or two from the hospital and a couple from the beach. Private parking lot as well as street parking. I had their pulled pork sammie with seasoned fries. Yummers! Great roll! Â Go check it out! I'm bringing by friends next time!
I had the special of the day - Â Philly Cheese Steak. I thought it was really good, and it came with two sides. Their slaw is really light and fresh as opposed to the creamy stuff elsewhere. Waitress was very attentive. Lots of things on the menu that i'm bound to try, like their fried pickles and the bratwurst.
P.S. They have a dog-friendly patio (awessssoooome) :D
