Beer update: after chilling in the refrigerator for a couple of days I decided to pop the top and give it a shot. it was amazingly good. I like wheat beers and this is one of the great ones. It is not a pretty beer it has a cloudy appearance and almost no head. I poured it into a pilsner glass. There is not a funky aftertaste which a lot of microbrews have. I would recommend this beer to everyone (over 21 yrs old) and will probably buy a bunch of it next time I am in the area.

"Meers" Mining Camp Restaurant is one of the true restaurant treasures we have here in this great country the United States of America! Older than Oklahoma since 1901. Meers is listed on the National Registry of HISTORIC places. The place is OLD indeed! Uneven floor boards is its charm & cant be changed or updated as it is a Historic Building! It is also the only restaurant in the whole United States that serves 100% fresh (never frozen) ground organic grass fed longhorn beef from their OWN herd of longhorns!
Farm to table. Let me say that again, locally sourced from their FARM to TABLE!

In today's world we have fast food burgers, diner burgers, gourmet burgers, craft burgers the list is endless. But NONE of those burgers can possibly compare to the quality of the longhorn organic fresh ground beef that is leaner and healthier for you period. For starters BEEF comes from old dairy cows that have been fed hormones & antibiotics and we all know that the residue of these chemicals are NOT GOOD for us! And BEEF even organic beef, a 3.5 ounce serving has 20.7 grams of fat when the longhorn organic grass fed all natural beef has only 3.7!!!!!

Yes, you know exactly where the Longhorn BEEF comes from and it's 97% LEAN!!! No other restaurant in the whole United States can say that! And for me personally, that is what makes it The BEST!

Food network stated the same thing on their show. Bon Appetit Magazine named Meers as one of America's top restaurant and it has been consistently in the top 10 best burgers in America year after year.

Meers is located right smack in the middle of the Wichita Mountain wildlife refuge. It's miles and miles from any city. Btw, Carly N. It's in a giant COW & BUFFALO PASTURE Girl! Lol The reason there is no wifi and phone reception is bc there is only a dial up connection available. That's why it's CASH only! Duh! There is a cash machine but it is also on the dial up and it takes like 20 mins to get it to work. They don't split checks bc it's CASH ONLY!!! Work that out amongst yourselves Duh!

The cowgirls that work here will be more than happy to make change for all y'all!
These ladies work very hard out here in the country and with only a population of 380 year round they appreciate your tips and kindness as its their only seasonal income and cowgirls like bling too! Be kind to your servers or they might stomp a mud-hole in your arse and walk it dry with those boots! Lol With no phone reception and wifi y'all are screwed! Lol (wink)

So, if y'all want a craft burger/fancy pants burger like with pretzel buns, foie gras, fried shallot, and cranberry fennel aioli please stay in the city with your high heels, high standards & high flutin tootin attitudes these cowgirls & cowboys don't know nutin bout that "foodie" crap. I been a gourmet chef for 25 years and I never once heard anyone jump up in the mornin and say "omg I have to have that burger with the foie gras" lol

But, if you want fantastic American grub, a real American cowboy & Indian "experience" in the only restaurant in the whole USA that serves farm to table kick ass burgers & beer, especially local made MUSTANG beer that is made from Oklahoma grain! WOO HOP HOO! (drink a 6 pack of those and ya might wake up naked next to the creek in a fire ant bed wit temporary memory loss lol) Anyhoo, ya'll dust off yer cowboy boots, throw on yer oldest pair of Levi's & ride on over! As long as ya got the grace of God in yer heart, cash in yer pocket and no cow crap on yer boots yer mighty welcome at this fine historic establishment!
I was just there for the weekend and had a few Meers burgers when this military guy from Ft. Sill was talking to the cashier about how great the burgers are and that the original Meers burger is not even on the menu! The really good one is the "seismic" burger but dressed with just lettuce tomato pickle onion not all the other stuff. Just a regular topped "seismic" is called a "prospector" It's a full one pound when the regular Meers burger is 1/2 pound. So depending on how hungry you are. The giant buns are made especially for them and they are delish!
The "frickles"(bread & butter fried pickles) are amazballs! The chicken fried steak, amazballs! And if you drive all the way here you better NOT leave this place without trying the COBBLER!!!! It's triple threat Amazballs! They make their own homemade ice cream that is a rich & creamy "experience" from the heavens!!!
Also, The blues festival is going on in medicine park Labor Day weekend & the flute festival is the last weekend in September. Put THIS on your bucket list!! See you there!

I had been meaning to check this place out for a while, I had been to the Wichita Mountain area before but had never gone inside to eat there, it is on the corner of the end of the road leading out of the wildlife refuge in the area, when you walk in you are greeted by this long stair ramp like thing that leads to the top of the restaurant, there was a line to my surprise so we had to wait for our seat, and a huge thing to remember about this place it is CASH ONLY

So... me and my friend get to the of the place and were told to go to another room, we walked into the other room and we had assumed we were in the dinning room as we saw there was dinning chairs, much to our surprise we were NOT in the dining room yet, we were in a holding room waiting on a a table to open up! It wasn't too much longer though they called our names for our table

The place is what I would define as rustic... gives you that old miner kinda feeling to it, old signs everywhere, wooden floors, chairs, tables, etc, a head of a longhorn cow is in 1 room

I was told there was a buffalo burger offered at this establishment but to much surprise I did not see it on the menu! What was another thing I did know about however was a 16 oz burger that is uniquely cut into 4 sections, I did order a burger however I did not order the mammoth size that this place has become known for

When you order you also order sides individually so you there are no "combo" meals so to speak, I ordered a side of cheese potatoe wedges, I also ordered a coke which comes in a Mason jar! Something much appreciated since it was a hot day!

The condiments and "napkins" were a interesting offering... they were in a metal wire cage like contraption that served well for holding things in place, the "napkins" were actually paper towers stuck on a wood pool for you to roll off for however much you needed. One thing that was awkward was the placement of our table, it was on a uneven side of the wood floor where it started to slope, so my chair felt like it was going to fall at some points, but I kept my balance

Now the most important part of my review... food quality.... to be honest... the food quality was ok, was nothing super special to be honest, and that was kind of a disappointment given this places reputation, I was expecting this place to be a awesome/fresh tasting burger and dont get me wrong it was not bad, but it didnt blow me out of the water. The potatoe wedges with cheese fries were okay as well... but again didnt blow me away

As a previous poster mentioned... this is a once in a lifetime experience... you go there cause it looks fun from the outside and is unique looking... but would you go back for the food quality? That is up to the person I suppose, but I most likely will not

Lots of reviewers said you come here for the experience. What experience? The building is super old, the floors are uneven, and there are trash everywhere. As far as decor goes, there are a ton of random stuff on the walls - license plates, money, pictures, and mounted animal heads.

My friend and I were already in the area so we decided to stop here for lunch. BBQ sounded good so that's what I got. It was decent but I've definitely had better and at a cheaper price.

Observations:
-drinks come in mason jars
-there are kennels outside for your pets
-you can order anything on the menu to go
-no phone reception
-cash only
-won't split checks
-it's loud inside the restaurant

I don't have any desire to come back. The food was average, nothing special.

Infamous Meers Store in Meers, OK. Worth the trip if your in the area. Very cool drive to get there and a neat old store with great burgers.

I can't believe all the hype surrounding this restaurant. I'm wondering if the reviewers claiming this is the "best burger ever", have ever had a decent burger. Our table split a cheese Meersburger - it wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't anything special. Just an ordinary cafe burger. We also ordered the cheese fries, which were covered in some type of jarred cheese sauce (Cheese Whiz?); they were inedible. The peach cobbler and homemade ice cream were very good. I doubt I'll return.

Regardless of where you live, this place is worth the drive. There's nothing, and I mean, NOTHING to draw you to Meers OK, except this restaurant. Located literally in the middle of nowhere, you'll find this place, and the parking lot is surprisingly full, yet once you sample the food, you'll understand why people continue to drive out of the way, for some excellent Cowboy Worthy Vittles.

The inside is anything but modern, and adds the perfect, thoughtful charm to the food. Lemonade is served in large mason jars, and hits the absolute spot on a hot summer day. I'd tell you to steer clear of the "Something Else" appetizer, but only so I could greedily eat your share. Get them, the marinated fried beef is served with a ranch dipping sauce, and were gone so quickly we actually ordered another one. We ordered from the heart of the menu...Meers Burger(1/2 pound of real ground beef), BBQ Sandwiches(hearty chunks of crusted brisket) and a Slaw Dog (Solid Frankfurter loaded with chili, cheese, red onions and mustard based slaw). Served on Cowboy tin plates, there's not a single thing we didn't enjoy. The end of the perfect meal, was a perfect dessert suggestion of cherry cobbler, which a single serving was big enough for our party of four to share. Get it with their homemade vanilla ice cream, they'll pile it on! The whole meal was simply fabulous. Four drinks, two appetizers, four entrees, some extra fries and a dessert cost an extremely reasonable $60(including tip).

The food is simple, but fresh and masterfully prepared. It's not really convenient to drive there, as the Meers Restaurant is a minimum of 20 minutes from ANYWHERE, but after just one visit, you'll understand why Patrons continue to go off the beaten path and eat here, time and time again. CHEERS.

Wow, it lives up to the hype! The burger was great, HUGE, well prepared and full of flavor. I love that they use long horn beef they raise...it's so much leaner too!! I sort of splurged while I was up there, I'll admit. I think my husband was in shock when I told him I wanted to order the peach cobbler w/ ice cream! As many of you know, I'm a personal trainer and fitness competitor, but HELL I'M"M HUMAN TOO, sometimes a girl just wants dessert, damn it! LOL Well, I think I bit off more than I could chew with that one!! A huge, and I mean HUGE bowl filled w/ hot homemade peach cobbler comes to the table w/ a MOUNTAIN of their homemade vanilla ice cream. That thing was bigger than my head! After the burger, I wondered if I'd have room, but let's face it...don't we all have a separate stomach for dessert. Well, obviously I did that day! Though we didn't finish it, we ate about half. I was sort of sad, cause I wanted to bring it home w/ us, but it turned into a soupy combo of what was left of the cobbler and melted ice cream. It was so good, even though you were ready to be rounded out of that place, you still wanted more. I was thankful I went hiking and paddle boating that morning...cause I must have eaten a day's worth of calories there, but so worth it.

It's definitely worth the drive and stop out there. It's fun, it has great history, and though nothing fancy, well done food doesn't need a fancy place for you to sit in to enjoy a great meal!! I'd love to go back to try their BBQ, and since we're here for another year, I'm sure I'll venture out that way again.

This was a once in a lifetime trip. Meaning it won't be worth another trip here. We drove from Oklahoma City for this burger, but I am not sure why people would even drive from Lawton for this burger. The burger was just okay. Nothing to really brag about. People who say this burger is great have never had a great burger.

The highlights of the trip were the Frickles, onion rings, and peach cobbler. The Frickles surprised me because I am not a pickles fan. The onion rings some of the best I have ever tasted. The peach cobbler was also really good. Also had a few bites of the pecan cobbler, interesting... Kinda like pecan pie.

Overall I would say pass on this out of the way destination. Not worth the drive.

This place is in the middle of nowhere out near the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Preserve. The wait was about a half hour when we got here.

The burger is the true reason why there are so many people here. The meersburger, meerscheeseburger, or seismic burger all come in the gargantuam sizes and are the width of a pie. The meat is from longhorn cattle and pretty decent. One thing I did not know is that mustard comes standardly on the burgers. If you want another condiment, you have to tell them not to add the mustard.

We also had sides of onion rings, okra, and fries and these were all great and plentiful.

The craft beer served here is made from a Choctaw recipe and was tasty and strong. The walls were spinning after getting up while drinking this. The bottles only come in 24 ounce sizes so they are kinda large.

The dessert here is excellent. I had the pecan cobbler and homemade ice cream. Both had that handcrafted taste going on.

When it comes to a "burger joint", this place is truly as good as it gets! The Meers Burger - especially when paired with their Meers' Gold Beer" - is so increedibly succulent that you want to kiss the owner and simply thank him for owning/creating such a unique treasure. The establishment is old, super old, and has just enough grime to add to its authenticity.

This is a place to try at least once for the experience. It's up in the Wichita mountains in what was once a gold-mining "town". The "town" consists of 3-4 attached buildings, several of which are occupied by Meers. It can be kind of difficult to find so take your GPS! Definitely a hole in the wall kind of place. Inside you'll walk across uneven floors, up and down stairs, up a ramp, etc - you can really tell it's an old building.

I've been 3 or 4 times and always got the Meers Cheese Burger. They do have other dishes but I've never tried them. The burger is huge and very good. The beef is apparently raised by the owner and grass-fed, which is pretty cool seeing as how we city-folk usually don't know where our food comes from. Because the cows are grass-fed, the meat is pretty lean and doesn't have a lot of fat/juice. So it may not be your thing if you like thick juicy burgers. The food comes out on tin plates and the tea comes in mason jars.

Overall, Meers is a great experience with delicious food!

Excellent food. The servers are attentive. My husband has a gluten allergy and the staff was very careful to make his burger without coming into contact with anything that might have contained gluten. Don't be taken aback by the rough exterior. This place is packed all the time. Get there early or be prepared to wait. The desserts are delicious and I highly recommend the cobbler. Be sure to take cash though as they do not accept credit/debit cards. If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would.

I've procrastinated writing this review because, honestly, I think I wanted to avoid any backlash from my friends whom I was stationed with at Fort Sill for nearly a year, and whom I would join at Meers on a very regular basis. Now that Uncle Sam has seen fit to scatter us across the globe, I can share my disappointment openly.

Hello, my name is Tim and I'm a foodie... more accurately, I'm a gourmand. Not to be snobbish, but I know what truly amazing food is; and more importantly, I know what it is not. The meers burger is not. You want to blow me away with a burger? Try creating something you might find in the recipe book at http://www.cheeseandburg… Those are amazing burgers.

Instead of ruining the experience for everyone, I chose to withhold complaint, as my friends enjoyed their burgers to no end. Meers' saving grace was the cobblers. I did have that to look forward to, after suffering through a burger equal in caliber to a White Castle slider... only much, much bigger.

The only way I'll go back to Meers is if I happen to be at Fort Sill with the same crew again, and we decide to go back for old time's sake. Otherwise, I'm content knowing I've already checked that box.

After hearing rave reviews from friends, I was very anxious to try Meers when in the area. I was sorely disappointed by our experience.

The inside is cute, decorated very quaint & old-fashioned. I like the way they serve drinks- in huge mason jars. While browsing the menu, I spotted that they didn't take cards. I understand they're trying to keep it authentic & everything, but at least put an ATM outside of your restaurant. We told our waitress that we didn't have cash, so my husband & his friend would be leaving to go get some. She suggested we go ahead & order so we did, assuming she would understand not to bring the food out until they were back. Our food was out within 10 minutes of my husband being gone, so my friend & I just sat there with four plates of food for a good 40 minutes (oh yes, the closest ATM is nearly a 40 minute round trip drive!)

I got a simple Meers cheeseburger, and while it was certainly decent, it was nothing special by any stretch of the imagination. The fries were downright disgusting- cold the minute the waitress set them on our table, and had an odd green/brown tint to them, and were rock hard. They tasted pretty much like what you'd expect a month-old fry you found under your car seat to taste like.

Their "frickles" were the best part of the experience, for me. They were the best fried pickles I have ever had (and I love me some fried pickles, y'all.) They were made with bread & butter pickles and the breading was sort of spicy- a different, yet awesome taste. Also, my husband & I split their pecan cobbler with homemade vanilla ice cream for dessert and it was delicious, and huge. So big we couldn't even finish half.

Despite their frickles & cobbler, I don't think I will be returning to Meers. Disappointing, because I really, really wanted to like it.

P.S. No sweet tea?! What?!

Like many others on here I heard about Meers because:

a. it was featured on the Food Network, for
b. raising their own longhorns to serve in the very old store and restaurant

I'm glad I experienced the whole Meers thing, but I can honestly say you aren't missing anything. The beef really is great, but is proudly:

a. unseasoned
b. cooked to medium well (they will not ask for a preferred temp and the menu says essentially, "don't bother asking.")
c. formed into a flat, wide patty. A standard Meersburger is a quarter inch thick and about six plus inches in diameter.
d. served with iceberg, tomato, pickle, raw onion, mustard, period.

If you're comparing the experience to fast food it's mind-blowing. But I wasn't comparing it to that. I drove considerably out of the way to hit this joint. To me, if you're going to use meat that good and that local DO SOMETHING with it. The whole point of using crazy fresh ingredients is to take a normal simple dish, like a hamburger, and make it something fit for the gods. I don't grow my own kale to eat it raw out of the garden and I wouldn't serve it that way to a guest and expect anything other than a "you want me to eat that?" look on their face.

So, basically, don't go out of your way. But, if for some reason you're in the middle of nowhere and hungry, it's better than Burger King.

Went here this weekend after having heard that these burgers are world famous.

The restuarant is made up of several very old saloon style buildings together. While this may not sound like a place you want to eat, the old-school style actually contributes to the experience.

I will say one very important thing, IT IS CASH ONLY. We didn't know this when we went (luckily we had it covered) but we saw a couple in front of us leave because they were unaware of this policy. The woman at the front desk informed us and pointed to a very small and easily overlooked piece of looseleaf that stated such.

To start we ordered Frickles (fried pickles) for the table. Honestly, this made the meal for me. The burger was good - the pickles may have been even better. They are sweet pickles in a perfectly non-greasy dough. They are crunchy, sweet, tart, and spicy all at the same time. I'd highly reccomend trying them. We also tried the fried jalepeno poppers which were decent - I'm unsure what they were stuffed with, possibly beans, but they were not spicy enough and I like my popper to have more cheese.

The burgers are made of farm grown longhorn beef and are 97-98% fat free, they are delicious, and leave behind no greasy fingers. I got a standard cheesemeers burger. It was beef, american cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, mustard, and sweet pickles on a bun. it is served cut in fours on a tin tray.

All of the non-alcoholic drinks are served with free refills, the lemonade is delicious. However the drink that stole the spotlight was the micro-brew they serve exclusively. It is a 22oz beer called meers gold. It is light and delicious - i highly reccomend it.

This restaurant is not a crowd-pleaser because of its ambience or service, neither of those things are great, however, they don't need to be when dealing with such delicious burgers!

After hiking all day, we really enjoyed the burgers and the beer at Meers. I was told it was featured on the Food Network for having the nation's best burgers and they were right. Served on a pie plate, the burger is already cut into fours so that you can actually fit it into your face. The meat comes from local longhorn that isn't treated with antibiotics and feed a healthy diet etc. The closest thing I could compare it to would be really good quality Kobe beef that was fresh and not overcooked. The meat almost fell apart while you ate it because it was so tender and juicy. The fries were okay, but the beer they claim to make with some native american recipe was amazing. It was light and hoppy with a flavor that allows you to enjoy the beer just for the taste. We also ordered coconut cream pie which was huge, fluffy and delicious.

Remember, cash only!

Their longhorn burger is one of the best burgers i have had. I have been coming here since I was a little kid and I have never had a bad experience. The service is fast and good and the food doesn't disappoint. It is worth the drive out there!

I've been considering this review for a while and how I felt I should handle writing about such an institution in Southwest Oklahoma. Since I was a kid, a trip to Meers was considered to be a treat at the end of a long day of hiking in the refuge. Unfortunately, despite possessing very good beef (for those with an inclination for leaner beef anyway), the numerous shortcomings of the restaurant make me feel an obligation to steer people away.

The major problems with the Meer Store come as a direct results of their success. After experiencing years of praise and business from tourism, they fail to recognize even the basics of customer service.

As many of the previous reviews mention, service can often be slow and impersonal. Don't even try and make a custom order, I've never ordered a burger without the standard toppings and successfully received my order. This kind of unflinching character of the menu might fly in a more gourmet restaurant where a chef truly crafts each dish, but at Meers, the menu is so basic the failure to give the customer what they request comes across as poor and lazy.

Also, the restaurant refuses to split a check, even with a party of two. This strikes me as possibly the most self-interested behavior I've ever encountered among restaurant management. As someone who has worked in food service, I can understand the slight inconvenience, but Meers' failure to adapt reflects only a undeserved pretentiousness. Simply put, the customer is not important to their operation.

I don't want to be completely dismissive of the service. On a personal level, I found my server to be friendly and generally pleasant, if stretched-thin. As far as the food goes, everything but the actual beef in the burger can be considered strictly average.

The two stars are a result of the novelty of going and the longhorn.

People will continue going to Meers because of the "experience." And for this reason, the issues addressed in this review will not change. However, if you're not set on a visit to Meers, you can do just as well elsewhere.

Probably one of the best burgers I've ever had. They use their own herd of longhorn steer for the meat so it is very lean and clean.

The sides were quite good as well. Had the beer battered onion rings, stuffed jalapeños and cheesy potato wedges. No complaints. Their signature beer was also a great complement to the meal and I highly recommend it if you appreciate a good beer.

Just eat it

As mentioned by Jeremy S, it is a love/hate kind of place. It's dirty, old, and crowded. You go there more for the experience I suppose.

I went there on May 28 (Memorial Day) and it was ridiculously crowded. I had eaten here before probably 20 years ago, so this was basically just like the first time again.

After standing outside in the 90 degree weather for 40 minutes (listening to LOUD Harley Davidson bikes), and another 25 minutes in line inside, we finally got sat at a table. There is nothing fancy about this place. Dust is all over the ceiling and pillars. The floors are old and slanted. The chairs don't match at the tables. The list goes on and on.

If you can get past all that, you are in for a pretty good burger. Is it as good as everyone says? I don't really think so. It's good, but nothing special. It's somewhat pricey for what you get, but not overly. The fries are your standard fry. Nothing remarkable about them.

I am not sure how this place became so popular. I do like that they raise their own beef, and it's all organic or whatever their tagline is but it doesn't get them a pass on the fact that it was just "good". Maybe I was expecting to much.

All in all, it makes for a good day. Go by Meers, have some lunch. Head up Mt. Scott, go swim at Medicine Park. It's all the experience in my opinion, and for that, I give them 3 stars.

I don't eat burgers as health food
Fat free beef makes crummy hamburgers. They are big, but they did not thrill me, they need to put some fatback in with that meat to get away from that wierd dry stuff, loved the place, but the real trip is the cobbler with home made ice cream

So I have spent the last 30 minutes reading reviews of this place on multiple sites, and I have concluded that you will either love this place or hate it.

I loved it!

The place is a dive. It is old with slanted floors and obnoxious signs. If that bothers you, then you probably will be put off by this place. While a little run down, I did not find the place dirty.

The place is busy. If you don't want to wait, then try getting there early or during off times. I had spent the morning hiking in the Wichita Mountains. I was starving and waited over an hour. I didn't complain.

The service is not amazing, but the women are busy. The place is packed, and they deal with hungry, short customers. I found if you smiled, said thank you, and put out good vibes, the servers would reciprocate. I enjoyed my server.

Finally the food. A lot of people think the burgers here are dry and tasteless. But this is not Meers's fault. Their burger is 97% lean Longhorn steer. It is unsalted. If you don't think the burger is good, it is probably a consequence of eating fatty, over salted, hormone-injected beef from cheap American fast food restaurants. I loved my Seismic Meersburger. It was huge, and I definitely stuffed myself. I wish I had saved room for dessert. I did have the Meers Beer, and I found it a great compliment to the burger.

Lastly, bring cash. They do not accept credit or debit cards, and there is no ATM. The accept checks, but they say only from banks they know/trust. Out-of-towners should probably have cash. They will also not split a check.

If you are a picky individual with taste buds shot by terrible, cheap, American food DO NOT EAT HERE. If you are willing to try a burger the way it used to be back in the days of the cowboy, made the way it was before capitalism made meat a cheap mix of hormones, fillers, and antibiotics then go here and enjoy it.

I was remiss for not reviewing Meer's when I was on my trip.

a) Not only locally raised beef, these are their own cattle which they slaughter and butcher themselves so that they can grind exactly the right blend for their burgers.

b) A carefully selected combination of garnish and condiments intended to work _with_ the flavor of meat they have crafted, not smother it.

c) I love venues that do one thing well and stick to it instead of trying to be all things to all people.

d) Fried pickles. Your world is not complete until you try these.

Meer's has ruined me on burgers _FOREVER_. I may literally never order another burger anywhere else ever again. What would be the point? It will just fill me with longing for that ramshackle, crooked venue at the end of a highway in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma.

Even without Meer's the local scenic drives are well worth the trip. You can start in Wichita Falls and make it to Amarillo in a reasonable amount of time by taking all the scenic ways from one to the other, which takes you not only through gorgeous countryside, but also to various curiosities like the "Holy City" -- and Meer's !

If you ever do an Americana style road trip, find a way to make Meer's part of your event.

We were up in Oklahoma for a day trip. After strolling around two parks, we were hungry. I pulled up "food Ft. Lawton" on my phone and the first thing was this place. My companion said that he'd been told by others that he had to try a Meers burger.

So we traveled the very short distance to Meers. Wow. It is very easy to find but the parking is ... adventuresome. Make sure you check three ways before trying to cross the street.

Expect a wait. We had a 20 minute wait in line to be able to rest our bones in the waiting area. They did offer free lemonade or tea while waiting. It's a bit close so if you are claustrophobic, you may want to wait outside and let your party call you when they are seated.

If you are so lucky as to get a signal, that is. I finally got one but I had to stand on one foot, cross my eyes, tug my ear twice and spit into the wind. Cell hell. But I digress.

The place is a 19th century early 20th century mining camp. It is quaint in its disarray. Old pictures, new business cards, slanted floors and tables thrown in here and there make this a feast for the magpie eye. There's even a quake-meter there which I found fascinating.

The service was pretty good. Our wait was prompt even when slammed but she did not bring out the appetizer we ordered. I forgot to check the bill so I may have paid for that. Ouch.

The fries were good. I thought my burger was very good. My companion said it wasn't the best burger he'd ever had but it ranked in the top ten. I concur. I think the hype of the best burger in the area stands. It's the only burger in the area. The meat was definitely superior quality.

So yeah, I'd go back if I were in the area and had on good shoes so I could stand a while. We wish we'd had room for dessert.

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE. The meat patty is cooked on an iron grill and is pressed down till almost flat, therefore making the beef tasteless and dry with an unpleasant crust..... Fail!!!!
Any good cook will tell u that the trick to a great burger (beef) is never disturb the beef while on the grill. This keeps all flavors n juices inside the patty.
Thank god I didn't have to make a line to get in or I would have been very upset.
Now, for the good part...The peach cobbler with ice cream is heaven on a bowl. The consistency of the baked peaches is perfect and the crust is buttery and delicious. Unfortunately, I can't give this review a five star based only on the dessert. Besided who in the right mind would drive to Timbuktu only for dessert, specially with the price of gas... Fail!!!!
Service was ok, a bit pushy to get you out the door.

OK, I think this will be a longer post because the Meer's Store and Restaurant was the last stop in my quest to eat every burger from the film Hamburger America (based on the book of the same name).

So let me describe my experience chronologically. I veered off-track 150 miles (75 miles off I-40, 75 miles getting back) on my cross-country trip. The ranch is really in the middle of nowhere. I did not realize they did not accept credit cards. I had to pay by check. Be advised, if you lack cash or checks, you shall be driving 10 miles back to "civilization" to find an ATM.

Nevertheless, I was still excited. I was completing my quest. Well at least I was proud. At Dyers (Memphis) the girls behind the counter chatted me up, and were personable. Even if they were faking interest in my quest, I still felt happy to be there. The staff at Meer's were just grossly disinterested. I wasn't in your face, but they still seemed unhappy that I was there. And the eyeroll I got when I made the girl walk 20 feet to buy their t-shirt was wonderful.

So I got my burger and went outside to eat it. Some other yelper have noted the kennels outside. I have not seen mention of the pack of feral cats lolling about outside. These cats will eventually steal 1/2 of my burger. It happened like so:

I opened my Styrofoam box containing the burger and began eating 1/4 of it. It was ok as a burger. Comparing it to the other 7 of my quest, it was mediocre. Well, as I was eating the first piece, a kitten jumps on the table and starts sniffing at my food. I shoo her and pick-up my second piece.
Once I do this, I realize I am surround now by two more, larger cats. Again, the kitten makes for my burger. I shoo her. But this time, as I am shoo-ing and distracted, one of the larger cats steals a 1/4 of the burger and runs off. Shocked and watching the bravado of this cat, the second large cat runs off with my remaining 1/4. I was essentially conned by wilily felines. I will try to upload pictures of this. Anyway, Meer's Store. Not worth 150 miles. Burger three stars, but with overall experience, two.

I first heard about The Meers Store from a coworker. He said he had the best burger in this place in Meers Oklahoma while stationed at Ft. Sill. I said sounds great, how long ago was that. He said 31 years, What! That place won't still be there. Sure enough, I checked on Yelp and it was! This place has been around since 1901. OMG. That is pretty impressive.

All I have to say is, Holy seismic burger!! This is 160z of pure goodness topped with bacon, cheese and condiments.

Meers has it all:

Location - check - out in the middle of nowhere backed up to a wildlife preserve

Ambiance - check - over 109 years old with crooked creaky floors and old signs

Food - best burger I have personally eve eaten.

If you are ever lucky enough to be in the area, this is worth the drive.

The burgers are lean and yummy-- a huge burger that comes cut up in fourths (which is what I do with my burgers anyways due to having small hands and a small mouth) with all the fixings. It was too much to finish by myself...I was so full that I had absolutely could not try the cobbler + ice cream (but it looked delicious. Will be back one more time before leaving Lawton so I will try it then)

It's the perfect start (or end) to a visit to the Wichita Mountains. Oh! and I love how they have a little kennel area outside for your doggies.

I love finding unique places to eat that aren't chain locations. Now I would've never found this place if it weren't for the suggestion of a friend. But I'm really glad that I did. Meers is kind of out of the way. But the drive to it is relaxing and actually reminded me of a country drive through Colorado. Who would've known that there were mountains in Oklahoma?!?

The burgers are amazing. 7+ inches round. They serve it in 1/4ths. It's kind of like eating 4 oversized sliders from White Castles. But this burger is much, much better.

The best part is that the Meers folks (all 4 or 5 of them) are friendly and excited to engage in a conversation with you. Plus, it's not that expensive either! My buddy and I only spent about $10 each for dinner. Dare I say its better than In-and-Out burger? I think it is. I'm kind of glad I don't live closer, I'd probably eat here way too much. And while it's a great place to eat, its not really the type of place that would be great for one's waistline.

A solid 5 stars...Worth the drive.

Meers hails from regional (also national given its rave Food Network reviews) fame. Locals faces light up when describing this hidden gem (seriously it's off the beaten path) which is truly an experience. Location and décor reminiscent of a scary deserted western ghost town, complete with 10 black cats roaming the premises. Drinks are served in Mason jars and the hamburgers are very large and unapologetically messy.

The burgers are good (but by no means a life chancing experience as some said) super lean, and messy. I had the cheeseburger - I was not as brave as my dining companions, many of whom shared the rather large Seismic Burger. I also had the cherry cobbler and homemade ice cream for dessert and should really be shared between two or three people.

Alas, Meers only takes cash and in this technological age, I find it hard to really like a place that doesn't want to make my life easy and just swipe my Visa. Also they don't split checks making reconciling the bill for large parties even more problematic for cashphobes like myself.

One of the best burgers in the southwest. Three sizes, hand made patties, buttered buns, and fixed in the traditional way - mustard. You can get them yankee style (ketchup) or sissy style (mayonnaise). Don't miss the pies and cobbler. And their beer is cold, golden and delicious.

This is a t-shirt, shorts, and sandals kinda place. Somewhat out-of-the-way location but absolutely worth the drive. After a suit and tie day or uniform day it's a great way to unwind.

If you're traveling to Lawton or Duncan it's worth the time if your a burger fan. It ranks up there with HoDads in San Deigo, Harbor House at the Kona Marina in Kona, HI, and the Post-Pub in DC.

I love Meers. Not only are their hamburgers awesome, they have the best peach cobbler, EVER. They cobbler takes me back to my childhood.

A huge serving of cobbler, that I would share with NO ONE!.

Awesome place.

I was raised in Lawton and I finally got around to making a trip up there this month. I have to say that I'm quite angry with myself for waiting till now to experience such an outstanding burger! What the hell was I thinking?!?

I'm so thankful when I showed up when I did because right after I placed my order, about twenty or so bikers poured into this little place. There's limited seating as it is. So there is no telling how long we would have had to wait in line.

I wanted to get the full experience of this place. So I ordered the Seismic
burger with all the fixings and a side of Freedom Fries. The burger held up well considering the size and the flavor was great. The freedom fries are your typical "bowling alley" kind of fry. So don't expect the same result as you did with the burger.

On my next visit, I will have to try one of those Buffalo Burgers and a dessert if I have the room and endurance for it. One more thing, they make their own beer, which you can purchase at the register. They sell them as a 4 pk for around $20.00 after taxes.

Just be sure that you have enough cash on hand prior to making the trip out to this great place.

I was on a rappelling trip one weekend near Lawton with a small group of friends and they decided to come here, touting it as the "best burgers ever", etc. I shrugged and thought, "what the hell".

Awesome place that captures the rustic & quaint aspects of Oklahoma's cowboy culture.

All I remember from my meal is delicious, freshly squeezed lemonade served in a mason jar and the biggest, juiciest most delicious burger I've ever had!

I have a lot of Okie pride when I think of this place :-)

The Meers Store is a popular attraction in Oklahoma's Wichita Mountains and features some of the best (and biggest) hamburgers you'll find anywhere.

Naturally lean Texas Longhorn beef is the main ingredient in those big burgers. Although it is not advertised as a menu item, the Meers Store has on occasion served buffalo burgers -which is even more lean and healthy to eat than the Longhorn beef.

The Wichita Mountains is home to a herd of over 500 wild buffalo. As a measure of population control a few buffalo are auctioned off to buyers once a year. Sometimes the Meers Store buys one or more buffalo for the restaurant. When you visit you'll have to ask if they're currently offering any buffalo burgers. If not, just get the regular Longhorn fueled Meersburger or Meerscheeseburger. It will not disappoint.

Along with the burgers, the Meers Store serves a number of other meat related items, including some really good steaks and barbecue.

The restaurant has an additional attraction: a very sensitive seismograph to measure earthquakes along the Meers fault and to pick up geologic activity from many distant areas. The seismograph is right there in the restaurant.

My review of the Meers Store would rate five stars, but there's a couple areas that could be improved -none of which have anything to do with the otherwise great tasting food. I wish there was more seating inside the restaurant as well as more parking outside. On a busy day (like a warm weekend evening) the situation can get cramped. I would also prefer it if the place didn't look sort of junky. It is possible to make a restaurant look authentically quaint and rustic without it feeling like Junior Samples could walk up any time to sell you a rusted out old pickup truck, "jus' call BR-549!"

Who'd've thunk that Longhorns could be so healthy? Apparently the people over in Meers, Oklahoma did.

The Meers Store (featured in "Hamburger America") makes a burger that has to be seen to be believed: a 7-inch wide longhorn burger served in a pie tin. Wow. I think I'm in heaven... Super lean longhorn burger, grown just outside, placed in a fresh, giant bun, surrounded by fresh lettuce, onion, and tomato...Oh-my-gawd...

This burger was almost too good to view. It had me at 'hello.' I had to wipe up a small puddle of drool on the floor after watching the burger wizards at Meers prepare this awesome meal. If you're ever down in Oklahoma, you have to stop by this place for their burgers. And then you have to buy me one and ship it overnight to California!

Disclaimer: I haven't been to the Meers store...yet. I hope to one day. This place was showcased in the documentary "Hamburger America" on the Sundance Channel .
