Visiting relatives in Versailles. I am a bit of a food snob, this place was just great. Cute atmosphere, great southern menu, extremely reasonable prices and best desert menu of homemade items I have seen in some time. This is not a place for black tie, but I will go here again and again while in Versailes. Our whole meal for 3 adults and 2 kids and some beer and a desert and tax and tip was $44. And the food was great. Hard to beat that.
Review Source:I think it is all about the atmosphere as far as the four stars because the food is just so-so. Although my sweet girl LOVED her meatloaf. I had the hot brown and I did like it. My boy had the chicken pot pie and he just thought Meh... The true gem is the PEANUT BUTTER PIE!!!! OMGosh! That is not to miss! YUM!
Review Source:I frequent this place because it's close, the food is decent  - not original but better than the average American type cuisine (which I'm not usually a fan of). They specialize in quiche and it's pretty good. I like Joseph Beth's better but it's still good. I usually get the clam strip dish and it's good. They make a great bourbon beef sandwich as a special (not on the menu). I like sitting outside but wish there weren't so many trucks through downtown.
Review Source:This was a southern-style cafe we stopped by when driving through Versailles. The service was a little slow, but we were extra-sensitive to this since we were in a hurry. The food was pretty delicious.
We ordered fried clams, the hot brown sandwich and an order of smothered fries.
The fried clams were cooked well and had a very delicious breading with them.
The hot brown sandwich was pretty good tasting, about like we expected based on the numerous descriptions on the internet. Melissa's seemed to have lots and lots of toppings on it, which is a plus. Since we ordered fries as a dish, we got stewed tomatoes as a side which were cooked very well and had a nice taste.
The fries themselves had bacon and cheese in plenty. About how you would expect, but they weren't overly greasy which was a pleasant surprise.
Overall, this was a really nice place to stop for lunch. The decor and atmosphere inside was peaceful. Wish we could have stayed longer.
One of the only places to get dinner (or any meal!) in Versailles. We went there by default but it turned out to be great.
My husband and I had salads and burgers--I wish I'd been hungry enough to try the pot pie, which sounded really good. All the dishes are homemade, although I'm pretty sure our fries were once frozen (crinkle cut, very nondescript and unmemorable). The burgers were fantastic, though--pay the extra $0.50 or so for the smokehouse burger!
Our waitress was really nice and attentive. The food is really filling, which is too bad since the desserts sounded great. Next time I won't eat all day and try to eat a whole meal with dessert!
Only downside: no alcohol, just beer and wine. The beers and wine we had were great, though.
Very southern. Fried catfish, chicken pot pie, burgers, pinto beans and corn bread, meatloaf - do I need to say more. The atmosphere and decor scream main street cafe in any small country town.
The food we had was well prepared and portions sizes were great. I found the food to be slightly under seasoned but a little salt and pepper solved that problem. Â
The staff were really friendly, courteous, and helpful. Â They had 13 pie choices listed on the dessert board.
This was really a nice surprise in such a small town. I should mention that this restaurant was totally full at 2:30 on a Friday afternoon.  Seems  the locals know all about it.
This place is super cute and does have pretty good home cooking. I'd give it four stars but every time I've eaten here its been super super salty. I definitely would and have gone back, its a nice cozy cute place to grab a bite in Versailles. I haven't had any but some of their desserts look very yummy.
At night a little before or after dinner rush is better, they get busy and its super small. If you sit outside make sure they no your there, we had a bit of "who's your waitress" last time.
All in all its Versailles ky, devoid of any real good dining, so if your in town and need to eat this would be my top choice both quality and cost wise.
If you need to eat in lexington, this is the best place that's open. Â It's adorable and Cozy and small and has all of the feel good foods you can thing of. Â
If your not a fan of salt choose wisely because it can be a tad over the top. Â We've had a good experience every time, a little slow if you sit outside, but your outside and it's a cute little town.
The desserts look yummy, and it's super cheap. Â I had the chicken Croquets with mashed potatoes and creamed corn, OMG was it comfort heaven. Â They also server beer, but just your lager lights, nothing fancy.
I have and will go back, it's within walking distance of our Lexington Office. Â It can get busy so a little before or after the dinner rush is better. Â It's not open late, so if you plan to dine after nine you may be out of luck at this cute little place
My husband and I frequent Melissa's 2-3 times/month. Â You can never go wrong with their comfort food and quaint setting. We recommend everyone to Melissas.
However, the customer service we where given this past week was totally uncalled for. Â After 45 min. of waiting for someone to take our order (we were already served drinks & bread), the hostess came outside and informed us she let the servers know we were waiting to have our orders taken but they said "that table wasn't there's." Â We were flabbergasted by that comment b/c all the other outside tables (maybe four) had been served (even by management). We obviously left the restaurant very upset. Â Despite my phone conversation w/ one of the supervisors, the owner has yet to get back with me. Where is the customer service these days? Even in small towns.
Melissa's Cottage Cafe has three of the best C's a restaurant can have - Comfy, cozy, and comfort food.
My parents were raving to me about the place, so we decided to try it out tonight. If you don't go expecting flights of gourmet fancy and love simple, Southern cooking, you will be very happy at Melissa's. And really, who doesn't love a good hot brown once in a while?
The place is tiny, but the decor is lovely, and you immediately feel welcome. Â The staff are friendly and attentive without hovering.
I had the chicken pot pie with a house salad and their wonderful homemade ranch dressing. Their ranch is creamy and full of delicious herbs, including lots of dill, which I love. None of the vinegary tang that plagues many restaurant ranch dressings.
The chicken pot pie - was chicken pot pie. Simple, creamy gravy, fresh vegetables and lots of tender white meat chicken. Top it off with a puff pastry crust and an amazing portion of fresh fruits, and you've got yourself a wonderful dinner.
My husband had the hamburger steak dinner with onions and brown gravy with mashed potatoes. It will be my go-to dinner the next time we visit. The gravy was rich, the onions soft and sweet, and the beef well done but still tender. The potatoes were a bit too dry and underseasoned, but I'll remedy that by ordering french fries. Too bad I can't find anywhere that will serve poutine, because the gravy would be fantastic with some french fries and fresh cheese curds.
There was no room for dessert. Our bill with tip came to less than $30.00, and considering the portions and the food quality, it was definitely worth every penny and more. How wonderful it is to be able to eat locally again.
The first time I went to Melissa's, I gave it five stars because it was a new location and I hadn't had food this good in Versailles in, I don't know, forever! Since I've gone back, however, the menu hasn't changed and it's become the place I go that's an old reliable.
This place is good comfort food: I've eaten the meatloaf, had a burger, and have found both good. My mom has had the chicken noodle soup, roast beef, the baked chicken, and raves about them all. My sister has eaten off the kids' meal and tends to get the chicken fingers (you know how kids are). All the sides are tasty: my favorites are the green beans, which don't need any seasoning but can be a bit salty.
The desserts are amazing: I highly recommend the hot fudge sundae--it's big enough for 2-3 people. You could have that for a meal on its own.
The seating is tight, and, because it's one of the few good places to eat in town, it's often crowded, but people seem content to wait for the food--a good sign that this place might stick around for a while!
