had the crab cake sandwich and it was good but I'm having a little bit of a hard time separating the food from the fact hat the place is... ummm... how should I say this... a total rat hole. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a shack/hole in the wall with the best of 'em. But what I'm not into is eating amongst flies because they can't get a good trash situation down. I also don't love, though being undercover, constantly being dripped on by a/c fluids? I don't know what it was and don't want too. lastly, when we asked for sweet tea, the response was that they had snapple in the fridge... WHAT?! isn't Virginia still considered part of the south? ... no sweet tea?!!! Not completely sorry I ate here but kind of wish I hadn't.

Looking for a quick lunch during my drive down to Norfolk, I stopped at Metompkin Seafood, conveniently located right on US 13.  Metompkin Seafood is a small, family owned fish and seafood market, but they also sell various seafood platters and seafood sandwiches for lunches and dinners.  Since I wanted something quickly, I ordered a crab cake sandwich.  While the sandwich was tasty, I felt that the portion size was a little small.  I was able to enjoy my meal at one of the picnic tables outside (there really isn't anywhere to dine inside).

Have to admit we made a huge and highly dangerous u-turn when we saw this sea food shack. It was just what the doctor ordered...local, cheap and weird.

I had the oyster sandwich which amounted to literally just that. Four fried oysters on a cheap bun. No frills but it was pretty damn tasty. My girlfriend had shrimp which was lightly breaded, large and plump. Spicy thanks to a splash of hot sauce.

Now I will be honest that the food was about 3 star worthy tops. The extra star comes from the selection of gun magazines to read while waiting for your order and for the out dated duck mural on the back wall. And I will never forget the copy of the Holy Bible sitting on the condiment table. Church and state are separate but I guess, in the south, religion and fried food are still in bed together.

After driving by the hand painted signs for years, finally able to stop in during their limited hours.
As described and the furthest from fancy that you can get.

Decent fried seafood at fair prices.

My aunt lives on the Shore and I always send her a credit for seafood for Christmas and her birthday.  She LOVES the prepared and fresh seafood at Metompkin Seafood, so I give the owner and his wife a call twice a year, they charge my credit card, and call my aunt to let her know her credit is ready.  Then she can go in whenever she likes and they keep a record of how much credit she has left.  It allows me to give her a gift she adores, and makes things easy for me.  The couple who own this small business have always been wonderful to me, and I have been doing this for so many years that I feel like I know them.  Service is wonderful and I have a happy aunt (who REALLY knows fresh good quality seafood).  Highly recommend.

Walked in the door at 4:30 and there was already a line. Selections were written on a board behind the counter. Asked for a combination that wasn't on the menu, not to be a $&@, but because they're my two favorites; fried clams and crab cakes. My order was taken with a smile and a thank you. About 10 minutes later, which given the line I thought was great, my food arrived. I had a schedule to keep so I took my food and left. I did have one bite before I left, and had to turn around and go back in to tell the owner how good it was.

I'm a southern boy, raised in a "if it ain't fried it ain't cooked" household, and I've got to say these folks know what they're doing. The breading was light and flavorful, the clams were perfectly done, the crab cake even though fried wasn't the least bit greasy, the slaw was great, the fries were some of the best I've ever had, and I can't even attempt to describe the hush puppies.

If you are on the Eastern Shore, driving up or down the Eastern Shore, or need an excuse to go to the Eastern Shore, Metompkin Seafood is a place you should make plans to eat.

$5 fish-n-chips right on the highway!  Really good fish, with a unique breading.  Basically, you walk in, say "excuse me" if no one is at the counter, and order.  Then, wait in one of the chairs and swat flies.  Soda cans are 75¢.  There are grungy condiment bottles on the one indoor table.  When you get the food you can eat at the two picnic tables in the front.

We've been coming here for years.  Just can't drive to the Easy Coast of the US without a stop for a fresh crabcake sandwich and an oyster sandwich. Yum-yum.   They also have platters of fine combinations of fried seafood.

No "eat-in".  But there are a few outside tables.

We also purchase crabcakes to put in RV fridge to fry up for dinner that night.

If you want real homecooked seafood, this is the place. Forget Stingray's.

This place has the best and cheapest fry fry we've ever had (and believe you me, we seek it out).

$12 for an enormous mixed platter with tender fish filets, juicy scallops, perfect fried shrimp, and fries.  Then you decide to head back in for another plate, but decide against it because you don't want to fall asleep during the last 6 hours of the drive south.

It's a tiny store with both take away and fresh seafood at incredible prices.  A lot of locals who may or may not appreciate your presence. There's a sign prohibiting patrons from eating inside (there are 2 picnic benches), but there's a table inside, usually occupied by a local eating.

Service can be grumpy, but the food is so good that it doesn't matter.

An incredible gem.  Look for the large painted crab sign.
