I love this place! The menu had plenty of flavorful options. Our waiter Scott was attentive and personable! We tried the 6 beer sampler for $6. Money well spent because we liked them all. There was however a favorite, Hoffman Weiss. This beer had hints of banana and clove. We were not ready to part with it. Scott let us know we could continue our love affair and take home a growler for $15. We will be back, not only because we can refill our growler for $9 but because everything was amazing.
Review Source:We came here hungry after a long tiring hike to Mt Washington from Pinkham Notch, and we were not disappointed. The $6 beer sampler was the perfect cure for my fatigue, loved every single one of them. Then came the amazing food. To save a few bucks I went with the salmon burger which had be floored with the white sauce that accompanied the neatly done patty. The salmon entree was great as well, and veggie friend went with the homemade veg patty burger which turned out sensational. The servers were very friendly and quick. All in all, if I ever come back to hike the white mountains, this is one place I won't miss!
Review Source:This is, hands down, my favorite place to go in the North Conway area, and maybe even most of New England. It is indeed a busy place, and they do pack a lot of folks in the restaurant. If you're looking for a quaint, quiet nook to contemplate the universe, this is probably not a good place to go. But if you want good food and beer in a lively atmosphere, this is it! Like many other have said, don't show up at prime time super-hungry. Get a reservation for best results.
I've never been disappointed in the food, but the beer is fantastic. They have a very skilled head brewer and their consistency and quality is on par with large breweries.
OVERALL: Worth the wait, just don't show up super hungry (like we did!) Food and beer are outstanding. Service is just barely mediocre; atmosphere is chaotic. Nevertheless, there aren't a whole lot of good dining options in the area so I would definitely recommend making the trip!
PRO. The extensive menu is eclectic and interesting - every staple dish has some sort of twist to it. We ordered the Santa Fe nachos: cheese (TONS of ooey-gooey goodness), chicken, and mango salsa - absolutely out-of-this-world fantastic. There were warmed mango chunks with the cheese as well as cold ones in the side dish of pineapple/mango salsa - a surprisingly nice contrast, especially on a warm summer evening. Overall a great take on nachos and there were about 4 other types of nachos that all sounded equally as interesting and good. We ordered them to share as an appetizer and I was almost full after just the nachos!
We also got the ultimate slider combo - 2x bacon and cheese hamburger - cooked perfectly and idyllic proportions; 2x crab cake sliders - SO MUCH crab! I hate it when crab cakes are mostly bread. These were a little hot (spicy) but I'm a baby about heat. But SO GOOD. 2x pulled pork sliders - also great. The Cajun fries that it came with were (as the waitress said) more like seasoned fries (not spicy at all) but delicious, delicious seasoned fries. Beers: pale ale and brown were both refreshing, light and fresh flavors.
CON. We walked in at 7 pm, Sat., July 4 weekend and were told there was an hour wait (there was a crowd waiting on the lawn) but we could wait in the bar area until a seat opened up there or for our table. The bar was so crowded there wasn't even a place to stand without being in someone's way. We asked the waitress if there was a wait list for the seats - there wasn't - it was "first come, first serve" which meant that we got hustled out of 2 tables by groups that happened to be at the right spot at the right time. Slightly annoyed because we had been waiting there for a while and ahead of them, we finally found some seats and it was entirely worth the wait. Why they didn't have a system in place for bar seating if it's that busy on a Saturday night, I have no idea.
My husband and I sent each other the link for Moat Mountain at the same time while independently researching someplace good to go during our quickie anniversary getaway, so we took that as a sign that we needed to visit this place that we had never seen in the 10 years we've been going up to North Conway. Â
We were not disappointed...the beer (Blueberry recommended by a friend) was delicious, and I am not a real fan of brewhouse beer yet...well, I guess I am now. Â The pot stickers were yummy, but the real star of that dish is the sesame slaw - incredible flavor!!!
Next day we went back for more beer, (we brought home a growler of Iron Mike) ordered the brisket nachos, intending them as an appetizer, and picked our entrees...no need. Â The nachos came on a full cookie sheet and were amazing! Loaded with toppings, and the homemade salsa and guac were delicious. Â So, being full from a giant platter of nachos, we ordered only the crab cake sliders, and I can honestly say, I have never seen crabcakes with so LITTLE filler in them, and the crisp on the outside of them was excellent. Â Very tasty, the aioli they are served with was perfect, and the fries, whatever they are seasoned with, were different, but yummy. Â
Overall, very good experience, we even brought home a growler that we had no problem finishing off the next day (it only keeps about 48 hours, so it had to be done.) Â The waitress even packed us a bag of ice and gave us a box to transport it for the three hour drive home - good service and great food...we'll definitely be back, with more people in tow.
A definite must stop through the Valley.
The Moat is one of our favorite places to eat in the Valley. Â The food is always consistent. Â We eat here about once a month and I've never had a meal that I would consider bad. Â
All of the BBQ dishes are very good. Â Their Austin style barbecue sause is one of the best BBQ sauces I've ever had. Â (The KC style not so much). Â Their BBQ Nachos are amazing.
I don't really like the atmosphere here. Â You don't have a lot of privacy because they pack a lot of tables into large open areas. Â
Pros
+ Good, consistent food.
+ Reasonable prices.
+ Good BBQ dishes
+ Beer (They brew their own)
Cons
- Atmosphere is so so.
- The menu is very BBQ centric. Â The non BBQ items I've tried have been only average quality.
Appears to be a hot spot in town for dinner per the number of cars in the parking lot. Â
We were expecting quite the wait but we only had to wait in the bar for about 10 minutes for our table. Â Service in the dining roon is quick and efficient.
I ordered the bbq pork burrito and my date ordered the 1/2 rack of ribs. Â The ribs were good; not the best ever, but decent. Â The burrito was odd. Â Sour cream and a salsa of sorts came on the side but there was no sauce -- nada, zippo -- on top of the burrito and no bbq sauce inside. Â Huh??? Â That made for a rather dry experience even when this salsa thing was placed on top. Â The pork itself had good flavor but made me hunger for just a simple pulled pork sandwich, instead (where I could douse with bbq sauce). Â Just don't understand this dish and don't recommend.
Anyway, I'd come here again but would try other items on the menu or maybe I'd just come to drink in the bar.
There are so many positive things I have to say about this place. To start, it is VERY KID FRIENDLY which, these days, it greatly appreciated. The food was awesome and the beer was even better.
They have a huge menu that can please everyone. So. Many. Choices.
I loved the crab cake sliders with spicy hand cut fries. My husband got a slider sampler and the pulled pork was to die for. Poor choice of words? Maybe. Delicious? I think so! The staff was super nice and the overall aesthetic of the restaurant was very casual and cool. Can't wait to visit again!
This place is good. Stopped in during a vacation stay in the area after reading what fellow yelpers had to share. Food was decent, we ordered nachos and a sandwich wrap and had leftovers. House brewed beer was also good, ordered a sampler to try them all and made the full commitment to the "bone shaker brown" and "violet b's blueberry." We'll be back.
Review Source:Yay! Like really yummy unusually creative bar food, without the dive-y feeling afterward! And all while sitting on an adorable indoor front porch!
The hubs and I split black bean pizza (so good!) and a sweet potato and apple quesadilla, and both of us were extremely happy with our order. Unique and not pretentious- bring it on. We also both tried one of their craft beers gave them a thumbs up....especially at $5.50/pint.
The only thing that didn't meet my expectations was the appetizer we chose. Â Those New England Hush Puppies were kind of bland and didn't match the deliciousness I had hyped myself up for.
We'll definitely go back next time we're in North Conway, and trying one of the beer flights is on my to-do list!
The bathroom walls are stuccoed and people have carved into them. My favorites were "Coke Zero" (as I don't believe the Coca Cola Company gets enough exposure) and "Brisket". My first thought was that people who just carved what they had eaten into the wall. Then I realized that this place serves neither Brisket or Coke Zero. So, I am assuming that these are pleas for menu items that are being ignored or a guerrilla marking thing for an upcoming, no calorie, brisket flavored Coke product. If so, I think Moat Mt should break with their Pepsi associations and stock such a product- not because it would be good but because it would be horrible. Then, by stocking Coke Brisket Zero, Mt Moat will actually be boosting the fortunes of their Pepsi overlords and destroy Coca Cola and forever release us from kitschy antique Americana consisting of empty Coke bottles. That kitsch really what is destroying America and supporting it is nearly as bad as joining al Queda. So we must stop it and Mountainous Moater Boats is the best place to start! Machiavellian? Yes. But that is how the game is played, son.
Review Source:We found our new favorite restaurant in N. Conway! We opted for the "Family Style Dinner" for $14.99 for each adult and the kid was $6.99 what a deal! click this to see the menu http://www.moatmountain.…
All of us were very happy at the end of our meal. All you can eat except for the ribs! Served family style and perfect..
Just a few constructive criticisms; the slaw is so good but too spicey, and so is the red beans and rice..not everyone likes spice... Our server didnt check back with us very much because we really needed more bbq sauce. A nice sampling of bbq sauce on the table would be nice (different kinds) and maybe dill pickles..The brisket was the best!
how about adding fried okra, hush puppies and steamed cabbage to the menu ?? (yes Im from the south!)
The whole place didn't wow me, because it is a brew pub also and the beer was just average. Drinkable by any measure, but just average. So it *should* have 3 stars at least. See below.
For food, the brisket was perfect! And anyone who loves BBQ knows that good brisket is the mark of a good smoker/BBQer. The St Louis ribs were good, not great, but good.
The sauces are awesome. I loved he hoter one. But they charged me 75¢ for extra to take home, so that cost them a star.
Maybe better next time.
Hands down the best place to go in North Conway, went here two nights during our 4 day April ski trip, that's how good it was. Reasonably priced, I had the Portabello Mushroom chicken sandwich, and the second time had a burger. the chicken sandwich was !$@% amazing! The burger was good, nothing mind blowing though. Good selection of beers with a few that are brewed on site, pretty cool. I definately know where I'm going the next time I come up here!
Review Source:This place never fails to amaze me. I really like eating on the porch now, close to the fireplace with a superb view of Mt Washington and the Presidentials out the window. Figured I tried a few new dishes and would update my review.
- Texas Style Brisket: Served with homemade mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and brisket on bread. Just wish it wasnt white bread :( An excellent meal and fills you up. Loved the homemade Austin BBQ sauce which had a small tang to it.
- Long Horn Nachos: I saw someone else get this a few days ago, and decided it would be a good appetizer to split with my skiing buddy, he agreed! The chips are toasted in the oven with cheese, brisket, and a few staple mexican toppings. This was served with what appeared to be homemade salsa (they need to give more in a bigger sized bowl, haha) and sour cream. Really excellent quality.
- Smoked Salmon: OMFG, this was hands down the best salmon I have ever eat at a restaurant! Smoked and served with a jambalaya type rice and black beans. The homemade salsa on top was an excellent addition. We both ordered this and would order it again!
Yeah, I love this place. They are also chill about giving you a few small samples of beer before you commit to a 20oz. Yes, they have 16oz pints as well, but if they have 20oz and you just came off a mountain - splurge!!
I've been coming here with my friends since 2006, but I don't remember it being so packed in the past. I guess everyone has caught on! The beer is very good, and the food is a winner. No wonder why both Friday and Saturday nights that we came here this place was packed to the rafters!
The BBQ is excellent. I recommend the brisket, pulled pork, and finally, the Long Horn Nachos. They don't sound good, but they're amazing!
A wonderful evening dinner with five others was had at this establishment!
A smokehouse and a brewery?
How can it be wrong?
Well it wasn't, it was right, and right in every way imaginable.
Built in an old house, a huge old house.
Turns and rooms everywhere set up in very pub like fashion, yet very homey and quaint in it's own way, i loved the decor, and set up!
Being in a smokehouse i had to eat meat - so i ordered the smoked pulled pork sandwich.
Best pulled pork I have ever ordered.
(almost as kick ass as mine - actually it was better.)
Juicy, tender, delicious.
To wash it down I ordered the Moat Mountain Sampler.
All 7 of Moat Mountains beers.
All were amazing, Â with the Stout and Porter taking the top two places in my books.
Although the rest were very awesome.
My co-patrons tried some ribs, sushi grade seared tuna, chowder, pulled pork burritos.
They were all very happy with the food they ate, I can attest that everyone ate every bite, and the talking subsided substantially whilst we ate.
I wish they were located closer to my home town, so i could spend more time and money within it's walls.
We had an excellent lunch at Moat Mountain! We always love to find local breweries with great food when we travel, and this definitely hit the spot. The atmosphere was really cool and the service was spot on!
We had the Curry Corn & Crab Chowder and it was so good! We ordered a cup and both agreed we should have ordered the bowl. We also had the Thai Tofu Wrap and the Crab Cake Sliders - both excellent choices. We tried both cajun and yam fries and I'm glad we did because they were both awesome!
Can't say enough good things about this place!
The boyfriend and I went on a skiing getaway for Valentine's day and after much thought decided to try out Moat for dinner. Originally planned on the Red Parka Pub, but after checking out the Yelp reviews - we figured MOAT was the better of the two. We definitely weren't let down!
Nachos were thee very best I've EVER head and the BLT pizza was delish. We were seated right away (which we weren't expecting, so that was fabulous!) Service was great.
If there were one downfall, it would just be the lack of dessert. Didn't see them advertised anywhere and none were offered. :-/
All in all -- great experience!!
This place lived up to expectations. I had a sampler for $6 (6 beers and they're all good) and the bartender said the Bison Burger on special was "bomb." He was right. If you don't like this burger then you're a vegetarian. Â
My friend had brisket and I tasted his texas toast and cole slaw (no mayo). I thought it was all very good. Â They have a large menu and I am wary of an establishment with so many items. I would believe it if someone told me their meal was just OK. Â I think burgers and BBQ are popular items.
Lines can be long for a reason - it's a popular place with good food. Â Solid choice for dinner, but get here early if you don't want to wait!
My family and I ordered a bunch of items including:
Meat Loaf
Blackened Catfish
Cornbread Crusted Catfish (recommended by employee)
Quesadillas
Ribs
Buffalo Wings
To start off with, when we ordered, we were told that the items we were trying to order weren't part of the current menu and that the menu that online was out of date. Â We decided to chance it and go down there to order and were then told that the menu was absolutely correct and we could have ordered everything over the phone... fine, simple misunderstanding.
We brought back the food and excitedly unpacked everything, mostly excited by the appearance of the food. Â We were quickly led to disappointment that would last an entire meal...
To start off with, the ribs, though not of bad meat, were poorly done. Â There was a smokey smell, but no smokey taste. Â There was a rub visible to the eye, but not present to the taste buds. Â The sauce was in another container with the wings and barely redeeming. Â We all tried them...the word 'terrible' was used.
The meat loaf was acceptable, basic, good meatloaf. Â It had a firm moist consistency, and a sweet ketchup glaze. Â This was the best item we got.
The blackened catfish had mixed reviews around the table, ranging from okay, to tasteless. Â I thought it was rather bland and not as spicy as I would have liked it, another thought it was tasty. Â The beans that accompanied the fish were unanimously denounced as having "a weird spice" in them.
The cornbread crusted catfish, which was recommend by an employee, was soggy, breaded, watery tasting fish with a "chipotle aioli" which tasted like red tartar sauce. Â The accompanying fries were soggy, but nicely seasoned.
The quesadillas were fine, but though the name would suggest ample cheese, there was none.
The buffalo wings were crispy, and while not very spicy, were well seasoned and had a tasty dill sauce to go with. Â Not awesome, but okay.
Perhaps, if there were a different chef, different ingredients and much more alcohol consumed, this would have been a five star review.
Fun place to grab a beer after skiing or shopping. The sampler is a great deal. A mix of light and dark, 5oz each, that's 30oz of good beer for $6. Not too shabby...
Crab corn chowder and beef brisket were great.
Don't even try to get a table without a reservation or wait on a Fri/Sat night. Us being from out of town thought we could at least even find a seat at the bar, the place was MOBBED! We ended up going back on a Saturday mid-day and were just fine. Good prices and a unique friendly atmosphere..we'll be back.
Are we all eating at the same restaurant?
This place is a tourist trap, and the food is awful. We first went to the bar, sat at a table for 15 minutes and nobody even acknowledged that we sat down. We walked out and asked to be sat at a table.
APPETIZER: We started with Smokehouse Nachos. This is how they are described:
SMOKE HOUSE NACHOS Â ........................................$10.99
Our Own Texas Chili w/Cheese, Red Onion,
Fresh Tomato Salsa & Sour Cream
The "nachos" were chips out of a bag spread out thinly on a baking sheet. The cheese was so sparse that instead of oogy gooey, it was crisp and burnt. The salsa was generic sysco brand salsa. The chili was sparse as well. We did get a ton of those bagged chips though.
ENTREE: We got the Texas Style Brisket. This is how it was described:
TEXAS STYLE BRISKET Â .............................................$14.9Â9
Texas Style, Dry Rubbed, Smoked Beef Brisket,
Austin BBQ Sauce, Garlic Mashed Potatoes and
Slaw on Texas Toast.
The brisket was so dry and well done, that it was crumbling into little pieces that resembled beef jerky chew. The brisket was then slathered with BBQ sauce (tasted like Cattlemans), which only tells me they are hiding the crappy product underneath. A good brisket that is rubbed and cooked low and slow does not need to be covered in BBQ sauce. Â Mashed potatoes tasted factory produced as well.
The beer is pretty good, but the service and awful food doesn't make up for that. I absolutely despise chains, but I would rather go to an Outback or Chilis to get better BBQ.
I would give the beer 4 stars and the food 2, so I'm averaging to a 3 star review, which actually feels a little too generous for me.
Moat Mountain Smokehouse is another in a list of disappointing food experiences in North Conway. Â I love the atmosphere of this place - cute parlor rooms with nice murals on the wall, but the menu is overwhelming, the food is sub par, and the heat was way too high.
The beer was good, so at least they have 1 thing going for them. Â
My advice: decide what kind of food you want to serve, and then work to do it well. Â The menu currently has BBQ, Mexican, Thai, Mediterranean, and Pub. Â It was so much that one of my friends almost didn't order anything because she couldn't deal with the decisions. Â I will say that the waitress tried to help, but ordering shouldn't be this hard.
All 6 people at my table were disappointed with the food for different reasons. I'll just talk about my experience: Â I ordered the pulled pork sliders with the regular fries. The pulled pork has no taste and I asked for extra sauce to try to flavor it up, but it just wasn't worth it. The fries were way too salty.
I ordered the combo platter (ribs, pulled pork, and a quarter chicken). I have ordered combo plates like this from many restaurants so I understand how much food it usually is. Here, it was way more food than anyone could want (even if it had been good food).
Everything on the plate was of poor quality. The food was dry and tasteless, and the ribs were like biting into charcoal.
The beer was nothing to write home about either. I drink Sam Adams as a favorite, so I ordered their Brown Ale, and it tasted more like Guinness. I tried the Pale Ale next, and it was very sour.
Overall, it barely deserves 1 star, I gave it 2 so people would read this review. I don't understand the long wait for a table; we would have had a better meal at a chain.
When we Ohio residents decided to stay in nearby Glen for a few nights while doing some hiking in the White Mountains, we had no idea that nearby North Conway was basically the Pigeon Forge, Tennessee of New England. Â In other words, a broad highway featuring about five miles of around-the-clock traffic gridlock and lots of motels and family tourist attractions.
And what seems like about two dozen large restaurants with nearly identical menus. Â Moat Mountain is one of them. Â Viewed by itself, Moat Mountain is a big old attractive, charming New England Inn. Â But it faces the gridlock on the highway and is abutted on one side by about three acres of parking: Â these features are not so attractive or charming.
We had a long wait in the bar area for dinner; the bar is modern, attractive, and has a good cozy vibe. Â And Moat Mountain Iron Mike Pale Ale was terrific. Â Despite the wait, we were off to a promising start. Â
But once we got seated, things turned chaotic. Moat Mountain's dining area, at least on this very busy night, kinda felt like a rangy mess hall. Â The hostess sat the six of us--four adults and two kids--at a five-top, which was a little awkward. Â Our server did an OK job with what she was given, but the general disorganization of the restaurant on this night meant that food came out of kitchen somewhat haphazardly and that that she was dealing with too many other tables to give us full attention.
Food was only pretty good. Â My pulled pork BBQ sliders were so-so: Â The meat seemed more like oven-baked than slow-cooked in a smoker. Â My wife and one of our friends ordered different fish dishes--salmon and catfish--and both were cooked properly enough but both were served on the same gloppy black-beans-and-rice mixture. Â The kids plates, which came only with Kraft mac-and-cheese and fries, seemed like a rip-off at $6.95. Â
The gist is that Moat Mountain has some really nice features, but is dragged down by some pretty serious drawbacks.
I swear I dream about this place nightly. You MUST stop here. Must. The beer sampler is incredible. Loved every single one, even a blueberry that I was ready to not even try. (I expected sickeningly sweet and it was just the perfect hint of blueberry!) I should have gotten some big cans to take home...
Everything on the menu is delicious. BBQ smoked pork sandwich... amazing. Hush puppies with maple syrup? YES! Â I won't even waste my time repeating what others have said. You just have to stop here. They have a great sense of humor with their decor, too, and a pretty view off the porch to boot. LOVE!
