My girlfriend and I have been driving by this place for years so we finally decided to check it out. Â The inside is amazing it has the upscale look with the casual feel. Â You can go there in a suit or shorts and sandals and feel just as equally comfortable. Â The Mockingbird is known for having the largest martini menu on the South Shore and they aren't kidding when they say its large, there are 90 different house martinis. My girlfriend is the martini drinker of the two of us so I had her order whatever she thought I would like and her drink as well. Â I had the smelly cat martini and she had a mango cosmopolitan. Â They were both delicious and perfectly pink in color, I did enjoy hers more than mine but they were both delicious.
We started our meal off with the blue crab and cheese dip appetizer with homemade tortilla chips.  Our extremely friendly waitress brings it over and the look of the dish is great except for the over cooked white tortilla chips, they were brown and had the over cooked taste to them but the blue chips were fantastic.  The dip is delicious but it was kind of luke warm not piping hot like I would expect a cheese dip to be when it comes to the table.  No big deal we ate it no complaints because the flavor of it was outstanding.
Time for the entrees;  I always base my American casual restaurants from their burgers so with 1 burger on the menu thats what I ordered.  My girlfriend ordered the mango salmon special.  While we wait for our meals we both order another martini this time the Satin Manhattan.  If you are a Manhattan drinker I would definitely recommend this particular Manhattan. DELICIOUS!!!!  Our food shortly comes to the table and I instantly cut into the middle of it for 2 reasons, 1 to see how it is cooked and 2 to make it easier to eat instead of being classless and stuffing a burger into my mouth in a more upscale place as this.  The second I cut into it I see that it is well done, I ordered it medium rare, obviously a problem.  My girlfriend dives into her salmon and it is over cooked as well and the vegetables are ice cold.  We flag down the waitress tell her our grievances and she  politely and attentively brought that back to the kitchen for a re-cook.  This is when we met manager Tom.  Tom comes over to  the table apologetic and probably one of the friendliest managers I have ever met. Especially being a table that sent back both entrees.  Tom personally brings the re cooks out at a haste pace and we have take 2 with the food.  My girlfriends salmon was perfectly cooked and the veg was of proper temperature and everything is happy in the land of the mango salmon special.  I of course cut right into the middle of the burger with Tom still at the table and low and behold its well done.  Tom then tells us he is going to leave my plate so I have something to still pick at and eat and he is going to personally get into the kitchen and over see the cooking of the burger.  My girlfriend eats and I pick at my delicious steak fries as I wait for my 3rd burger.  Tom brings the burger out a short time later I cut into it and it is cooked perfectly.  Finally I can eat my medium rare burger and we can continue enjoying our night.  The burger was a tad bland and was nothing special, I would assume that the burgers are frozen even if they are cooked right because it was just solid and nothing special.  I would suggest trying something else maybe ask for the mango salmon because my girlfriend was in heaven eating it. Â
Tom then brings us out two slices of cheesecake for the re cooked food and the aggravation of everything. Â They were amazing, we had the key lime raspberry cheesecake and a smores cheesecake and both were amazing, I would suggest either or both of those if you visit this establishment.
I was originally going to give this place a 3 star rating just based off of the overcooked food and the send backs but I can't. Â Tom is the reason this place has 4 stars and the reason why I will be back. Â He made it his personal mission to make sure we had an enjoyable night and he went out of his way to make sure everything was perfect. Â He can hold a great conversation and makes me want to come back just knowing they have excellent people like him managing the restaurant. Â The ride home was a nice long discussion about how we will go back just to see Tom and have a casual conversation with him. Â
JUST A LITTLE FYI AT THE END 3 MARTINI LIMIT!! Makes sense but it isn't stated anywhere on the menu so it just kind of feels degrading when the waitress says "oh its a 3 martini limit" after you order your third. Â I just don't like the feeling of being parented when I am very responsible and would never drink and the drive intoxicated. Â Great policy just state it somewhere on the menu or have the servers state it at the beginning of the night so I don't feel like a kid drinking too much soda!! Â Def a must go though!!
First time to Mockingbird, we had an overall great experience. Â
Seated immediately and it was a quiet night so we had plenty of space. Â
Waitress very personable and attentive.
Calamari was boring, but the hot pepper relish it came with, although small, was great. Â The calamari is what's keeping this review from getting a 5 star rating. Â It was essentially the only thing I didn't like about the evening. Â I mean it was edible and we ate all of it, but any bar could have deep fried this and thrown it on a plate.
Meals were good. Â Chicken parm was as expected, and my wife had the butternut squash app and beet salad as her entree. Â She lilked it, I'm happy. Â
Manager came over, talked to us for a few minutes. Â Nice touch. Â Walking by the bar, bartenders also very friendly and talkative. Â
Martini list is extensive and expensive but if I want a cheap drink I should stay home, right?!? Â I would recommend this place. Â The decor is very unique and needs to be seen.
They have a VIP thing that is free to sign up to. Â They want to keep you coming back by offering coupons, deals, etc. Â Yes we signed up.
Oh yeah, they have KENO for gambling nuts as well if you are into that.
We will definitely be headed back as we both had a great time.
The Mockingbird is not your run of the mill south shore eatery. Â The Chef owner has a solid handle on the cuisine. Â The staff is very friendly and attentive. Â And the atmosphere is comfortable with a modern flair. Â We have yet to have a bad meal here.
On our last visit we got the Chicken Saltimbocca and the Baked Haddock with Blue Crabmeat Sauté.  For the saltimbocca, the Chef always accommodates our request to sauté chicken rather that have it breaded and fried.  As always it was fantastic!  For the haddock, what a surprise!  I usually don't order seafood but it sounded too good to pass up.  I was not disappointed.  A generous amount of crabmeat sautéed with onion, tomato, artichoke, and baby spinach on top of perfectly done haddock. Â
Service has always been solid here. Â The waitstaff is very busy but efficient and attentive. Â
Over the last several years the owners have freshened up both of their dining rooms. The atmosphere has a modern clean feel to it. Â It's the perfect place for local date or a small family gathering. Â Plus there's always the martini bar if you're not that hungry.
My husband and I went for dinner on Sunday night and it was a pretty lackluster experience. It was disappointing all around. I got the stuffed scallops which tasted fine but for the price I know many other places I could go  and get better food for less money. My husband got the short ribs and minestrone soup and was not impressed. He is not a very picky eater and until this meal  I had never seen him meet a short rib he didn't like. Also, the beans in his soup were hard and inedible. I know because he had me try the ribs and the soup and I agree that the ribs needed more seasoning and the beans were just not cooked long enough. To make matters worse the side that came with his meal was not the same side that was on the menu and when we got our bill they had overcharged us by $2 for his sub-par meal. I also feel I should let people know that they charge for every soda you get so we basically paid $8 for 3 cans of Pepsi. For a restaurant on rte 18 in a small town they want to charge North End Boston prices and the quality isn't even close to that.
Review Source:I live practically right down the street and I can't believe that I have never been here before.
The restaurant is very well priced for the portions of food as well as the pours of alcohol being served. The establishment offers an excellent rendition of a martini lounge which is friendly to the long-ago married couple, newly acquainted young man and lady as well as the office clique.
The sheer multitude of different martinis available to order means that if you make a rule of having 2 different martinis each time you dine here, then you will have to come at least 50 or so times to have all of the martinis. As a former professional bartender, Â I recognize that alot of these are shooters served in a cocktail glass. Regardless, mere technicalities shouldn't deter anyone looking for a good time at a reasonable price from this place.
The bar staff was excellent during my visit: Proactive in making sure I had enough beverage in my glass without being so over the top that I would feel pressured into ordering another cocktail.
My wife had the chicken saltimboca (pardon the spelling) and I had the chicken picatta off the early bird menu since we were there around 4:45pm. Even for an early bird menu, the portion was generous, included a cup of soup or salad AND a dessert. Both of our entrees were under $15.
For cocktails, the Mockingbird doesn't completely satisfy my thirst for a Capital Grille, Smith and Wollensky or Ruth's Chris cocktail hour environment. Â But for the price, portion, friendly staff and local feel, it definitely will be a spot for me to choose again for a Macallan on the rocks.
The two stars is for the big problem of the night--service. Â We brought in a large group (called ahead for a reservation) and while we were seated right away, our waitress seemed less than interested in the potentially large tip a group of 7 could bring her. Â We waited (I counted) 22 minutes before we were even asked what we'd like for drinks. Â While the place has an excellent martini selection, unless you're a martini drinker you're pretty much out of luck. Â I listed three other drinks first and was flatly told "We don't have it." Â So much for that. Â After we ordered our first round of drinks, the drink menu was promptly taken from the table, and later it would be next to impossible to get it back when we wanted to order another round. Â After the drinks and apps were ordered, she disappeared for another 20 minutes until we got the appetizers. Â The drinks came five minutes after that. Â The meals were good, no one had any complaints, but she again never checked to see how they were and by now the table was littered with dirty dishes and silverware. Â When the check was finally asked for, it took ten minutes to bring it to us, and even though we placed a credit card in in right away, we waited another fifteen minutes for her to come collect it. Â She definitely didn't get the kind of tip she could have from us. Â While the food wasn't bad, the service was terrible. Â I won't be making the drive back.
Review Source:Ehh...... my wife went with some friends a couple months back and said she loved it. She was pregnant at the time and wasnt able to partake in any of the martini fun. I took her back there last weekend for our anniversary, and I was not impressed at all.
We were crammed in to a table where I felt I was closed to the people next to me than I was my wife. We felt so close to the tables next to us, that when they were getting their food dropped off, and the waitresses butts were in our face. Our waitress had no personality.
I asked if we could keep the martini list to order another drink and we were told that there were people who hadnt yet ordered a drink and they needed the menu first. We never got the menu back.
I am not a picky eater, but stick to basic foods. Nothing on the menu seemed appetizing and since I am not a seafood person, there wasnt much of another choice. I got filet, dry and fatty. The 'butterfly cut' I requested ended with my filet being cut in to two pieces.
One bright side was the bacon cheddar mashed potatoes.....
My wife agreed that it wasnt as good as she originally thought. We would not be going back.
The wife and I had dinner here once after hearing good things. Â We are martini fans so we did appreciate the martini menu and they do make a good drink here. Â The food however was just mediocre - I can't even remember what we had because it was so bland. Â The service was good, the ambiance was good but they never really gave me a compelling reason to go back.
Review Source:Went for our anniversary-Friday night, 8:00.  Parking spot right up front-great! Not too busy (1st warning). Tell hostess it's our anniversary-not looking for anything extra, just  not be dicked with, you know? Seated immediately at a huge table for 6, but with a cool couch, so...ok, still great.  Waitress shows up w menus. Wine list has 3 crappy reds by the glass, everything decent is by the bottle only.  Ok, I choose a crappy pinot noir.  Waitress eventually shows back up to take the drink order, then breezes by the table 3 more times to let us know the drinks "will be right out". We were about 15 feet from the damn bar, and there were only 4 other parties (and 1other server) in the room, but hey, it's our anniversary, we're still cool.  Waitress serves a party of 4 and hits their table 3 times before she ever took our order. Drinks/wine served in "fun-sized" glasses-im no wino, but these were SMALL glasses, and only about 1/2 full.  Not wanting her to get away again, we ordered everything at once. She swiped the martini menu, so I guess we didn't need dessert martinis, anyway. Apps arrive 45-50min after we were seated, and ONLY after waitress has cleared and bagged the table of 4's leftovers and brought them coffee.  Burned clams casino and calamari that had more "shrapnel" than rings. Good pepper relish accompaniment, though. Love of my life ordered surf and turf special, I got the haddock w blue crab. His dinner consisted of 4 small/med shrimp, and maybe 5 pieces (already cut up bite sized, no fooling) of what might have been steak, but so thin Im thinking it began life as last nights roast beef leftovers.  No garlic to speak of in his garlic mashed potatoes. My dinner, though beautifully presented, was saltier than my Irish Nana's Sunday dinner cooking, to the point that even with more lemon than it had a right to, (i squeezed 4 slices into it to try and overpower the sodium), it was inedible (and trust, I'll eat almost anything). Husband had to wave his credit card in the air to get the waitress to come back and release us from the misery. She didnt even ask about coffee or dessert. I get that sometimes a place will have an "off" night, but generally, either the food or the service is redeeming enough that you can overlook the bad. When the seating is the best thing to be said about the place, though, you gotta move on. It's a shame, because our adorable little country town deserves a nice restaurant, and we had high hopes. On the upside, I still got to enjoy the company of my best friend, and we'll have a do-over anniversary dinner at an actual good restaurant next week. C'est la vie...
Review Source:My Hubby and I go to dinner a lot, and this was our pick last Saturday evening. Â We went late-ish, 7:30pm or so, and we were impressed with how busy it was. Â The place is of a minimalistic and modern decorative nature. Â Not MY style, but very nice and comfortable to sit and have dinner in. Â Nice ambiance. Â We did wait a bit for the waitress to come over and take our drink and food order, but once we got our drinks, we were happy... Â I got a Campari and soda, and Hubby got a lemondrop martini. Â Nice and boozy! Â The menu was small-ish, but nice... Â Hubs got Chicken Saltimbocca, and I got the panko crusted haddock with asian slaw and basmati rice. Â Both were HUGELY portioned, and well done. Â Well done as in DELICIOUS. Â Perfect. Â The chef knows his stuff! Â My haddock piece was HUGE. Â I was full before half of it was finished, and I can EAT. Â Hubby as well... Â The chicken breast was HUGE and there were many pieces of ham and the sauce was killer! Â Even though we were "I hate myself" full- we got the molten ganache chocolate cake. Â Whoa nelly it was soooo decadent, I was full, but MAN, I could have had another serving!!! Â We will go back to Mockingbird most definitely. Â It is 5 minutes form our home, and a very nice place to go on an "old married people" date. Â We recommend it :)
Review Source:The service was very good but the the food is descent but nothing that I would go out of my way to go to. I must however say they do a great job on the greek salad. I dont live too far away but I usually just go here once every 3 years or so. There is no doubt that it is a good place for a martini if that is your thing but the food just is not memorable.
Review Source:A Homerun on the South Shore!
My wife and I have dined at the Mockingbird nearly 30 times since 2003. I have never found a better place to dine on the south shore since then. Newly renovated, the atmosphere here is spacious, modern and dimly lit. A large sized bar with plenty of seating offers the best martini list around nearing 100 different martinis to choose from! The appetizers are top notch with below average prices for the area such as blackberry glazed sea scallops, the delicious flat bread pizza, deep fried sage and butternut squash ravioli(mamma mia!!) and more with prices ranging from 6 to 12 $. For entrees, the bangkok tai scallops are sensational and the chicken saltimbocca is the best you will sink your teeth into on the south shore of MA! Entree prices range from 13 to 23$ and even more reasonable if you get there earlier for the sunset dinner menu option. If you enjoy vino with your meal, I recommend the McManus Cabernet if they still have it, it has a nice spicey and toasty oak taste to it and it is served at room temperature! Don't even get me started on the desert! I will leave you with this - the deep fried banana cheesecake is to die for! If you have not ventured out to this too good to be true hidden jewel of a restaurant, I highly recommend that you hesitate no longer, Â and if you can, say hello to chef Frank, he continues to be on top of his game in the kitchen, and we have not been disappointed yet!
Really liked this place. My friend and I Â (girls night) put our names in on a Saturday night around 7 or so. We were told there would be an hour wait, which was fine. We ended up with seats at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and handed us a martini list like I have never seen before...you name it, it was there! I ordered a jolly rancher martini (yum) and a grape martini (okay), by the time we started sipping on the 2nd drink, the buzzer was going off and we were seated at a table. The waitress was also great, she brought bread, and took our order. I had a lobster ravioli scampi with scallops and shrimp, it was really good! We ordered dessert martini's, but the waitress asked how many we have had, I guess there is a 3 martini limit, this would be my third! I had a thin mint martini and again, it was yummy. All in all, I would go back here again, really liked the atmosphere, decor, drinks and food. We had a really good time!
Review Source:My surprise briadl shoer ended up being held here. Â The front dining area turned out to be perfect for our # of guests (buffet was arranged just outside, near the bar). Â Food was delicious. Â They work with the Bashful Baker for cakes for events (or did at the time anyway)... Â don't depair! Â The cake was TO DIE FOR! Â Have also been for an anniversary dinner with hubby (ended up in same room, only now set up for dinner. Â Have not been disappointed.
Review Source:Loved this place! Service was good. Prices were good as well...salad, dinner, and dessert for $19 (sunset specials). Drinks were deeeelish! I had the panko crusted scallops, which were amazing! Wish this place was closer to home. If I must criticize something (which I guess a yelper must), the lighting was a little bright for dinner time, but it really didn't matter as I was engrossed in my food.
Review Source:Love Love Love this place! Bacon wrapped raspberry glazed Scallops. Yum. Bacon wrapped giant stuffed Pork Chop. Oh man. Jack Daniels Creme Brulee. This place is awesome. The regular menu is amazing and they always have great specials. The martini menu is at least 10 pages long, but be warned they have a three martini per person rule. The service is always friendly. I recommend reservations for large groups or on Saturday evenings. Who ever decorated this place needs to be my personal interior decorator.
Review Source:Steve M. said "I don't like the atmosphere. It doesn't feel comfortable, something is just out of place there."
Dude you are right on the money! Its not just you, trust me... People seem to either love or hate this place... never a middle of the road review when you talk to the locals.
I've been there like 5 or 6 times hoping it would get better because its so convenient but I finally gave up.... Great job on the exterior! Looks way more inviting than it really is... JMHO
My boss took her entire unit for dinner here one Christmas (Pre-Recession) and I think I fell in love with the idea of the place more than with the food. I remember feeling  like I wanted another piece of chicken or something. It was descent, I don't remember being extremely disappointed but I wasn't completely "wow-ed" either.
The martini's however were great! I would like to try it out again maybe a "date" spot or maybe a girls night out where the crowd doesn't really matter.
I have been dining here since they opened 9 years ago. I have not one complaint and have ate here at least 20 times! I always go for my birthday and also recieve a gift certificate there twice a year.
The service is always excellent and I am always satisfied and get food to take take home. My favorite appetizer there as of late is the chilled sea scallops...they are always  fresh and very delectable. My two favorite dishes are the raspberry marinated roasted breast of duck and lobster & shrimp stuffed tortellacci. They are known for there martinis and they are very strong. Beware, 1 is usually enough.
They are a bit pricey but for the value and quality of the food it is well worth it.
PS: I also eat there when I don't have a certificate. On thursdays they have 3 mini martinis..great for a girls night out.
This place is definitely a bright spot on the south shore and I was happy when I finally got the chance to check it out! Â We went on a Friday night and while I expected a wait - we were seated right away! Â I agree with a few of the other reviews - the decor in here has a split personality. Â The bar side of the restaurant is very contemporary, spacious and modern while the other side is nice but pretty plain. Â The martini menu is just as advertised - extensive! Â Lots of great options and you will likely take longer to order a cocktail than your dinner...or maybe not. Â The dinner menu was also varied and lots of delicious sounding options and it took forever to decide what to choose. Â I ordered the roasted chicken and fresh mozzerella pasta dish - it was FANTASTIC!! Â The portion was huge (and the leftovers were just as good for lunch the next day). Â My date had the cajun salmon which was also delicious. Â Our waitress (Colleen) was really nice and very attentive without being intrusive.
I am already looking forward to going back!
Great food and 1/2 the atmosphere with good prices.
The food is fairly top notch however the atmosphere of the place is just slightly off. The exterior is lovely and gives the illusion that the inside will be just as nice. Â Half of the interior feels like a dumpy pizza joint while the other half has a more upscale modern look to it. All in all the inside is just strange.
It gets such a good rating on the main attraction, the food. I will certainly return just for that.
updated 4/13/11,
I went back and they must have updated the other 1/2 of the decor. Well done, it was in need of it and now it looks great!
I love this place and went there for the first time last night. I wish I'd known they existed while I was at Bridgewater State. They've been open for about 8 years but have had recent renovations. Some of the tables have couches for seating and there are 2-3 separate dining rooms. The atmosphere is modern and service was great. I am one who always asks a lot of questions about the entrees and they really helped me figure out what to order, as I was debating between 4 or so entrees.
A decent reisling went with my meal. The fried ravioli appetizer was delicious yet tasted like cookies!! Also, on a friend's fish entree, tehy put "caperberries" which is something I never heard of before and was surprisingly good.
Looking forward to going back to order one of my other debated-over options.
I came here with a group of friends for dinner on a Saturday night. Â Mockingbird was a pleasant surprise! Â There are many, many martini choices. Â I had the Vegas Lemon Drop, which was delicious and *strong.* Â There is a good variety of dinner choices as well. Â The service was excellent. Â Overall the Mockingbird is an upscale choice for the area with reasonable prices for the high quality food, drinks, and service.
