Awesome "dive" restaurant/bar! I'm hesitant to call it a dive because it wasn't dirty or dingy, just a small pub with a humble menu and terrific beer. They gladly accommodated our party of 20 on a last minute notice. We were able to squeeze most of us along the communal table which was absolutely perfect.
The staff was incredibly friendly, even during a slight order mishap. The food was what you might expect at a tavern but maybe even a little above expectations. The pizza hit the spot, the appetizers were nice and crunchy and the fries were delish. Kudos to the waitress for putting up with all of us including my chatty, cheesy-joke-filled father. Â We'd love to come back on our next visit to Tahoe!
I've driven past this place many times when staying in South Lake Tahoe and never gave it a try until last week. I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a Cheesburger and French Fries. Both very good! I will be back! Izzy's Burger Spa is also a great spot for a Cheeseburger. Mott Canyon has the benefit of a good atmosphere, plenty of seating, TV screens and a Full Bar. Good pricing on drinks also and I wasn't even there for happy hour.
Review Source:Stopped in with a friend for a few drinks. Â This is a casual place not far from the casinos on Kingsbury Grade. It has that rustic feel, several TVs and a big fish tank. Â
If you're a visitor and staying on the grade it's an easy in/out on your way home or down to the casinos.
Staff is friendly. Drinks are moderately priced. Â We did not have any food last night, but based on past experiences it is good for bar food.
If you are at the lower end of the grade stop by for a drink and some video gambling.
Mott Canyon Tavern & Grill is a solid dive bar! Â
I'm not going to come here specifically for any of the food items (typical bar food), but I will go ahead and eat something while I'm here enjoying a drink. Â Truth be told though, I did not try many entrees...and I hear the pizza is good. Â
They have a great Happy Hour and Reverse Happy Hour as well...and I will most certainly come for that!
Mott Canyon is a locals place...quite a different vibe than you get from the touristy venues near Heavenly. Â The staff is friendly and there is a portrait of Kramer on the wall! Â They are also one of the few non-casino establishments open late!
Buy one get one free drinks every night after 10pm! How can you NOT like this place?! We ended up getting 4 pitchers of beer and 22 shots of Jameson to share between 9 people because we were celebrating my boyfriend's birthday. The shots were originally $5.75 each while the beer was about $20 a pitcher. Good deal!
We were also having a really late dinner (around midnight almost) because some of the guys did Tough Mudder in North Lake Tahoe and so we got back to the hotel late. After washing up, there really wasn't a lot of places open in Lake Tahoe for food. This place is open 'til 4am! The food is okay, nothing really that special. The crab and artichoke appetizer was good though. I also liked the battered shrimp.
Alcohol service was relatively fast but food service was slow. Be prepared to be there for a while. Only one person was working the front and I'm assuming just one person worked in the back because of how slow it was. The server was nice and also told us he'd have to come back after he gets other stuff done so at least you know what to expect.
There's jukebox music for about $1 a song. The place was empty enough that you could start your own dance floor. Some other people definitely did.
Overall a chill place to hang out at night in South Lake Tahoe where there's not much to do at night!
Rolled in here the other evening, for my usual burger and beer combo.
The food was deelish, as always, with excellent and friendly local service.
Gotta love the picture of Kramer on the wall. Â I need one to put above the fireplace!!
Skip the pinball game, as it keeps breaking down more and more over the past 10 years and the owner just doesn't want to spend a dime fixing it.
If you're riding 2 wheels then check out Kingsbury grade eastbound, as you make your way to Mountain View BBQ in Walker, CA for lunch.
Came across this place thanks to yelp and I loved it. I came here on a Saturday night. The fish tank in the middle of the bar was very cool. There were two female bartenders that were friendly and definitely funny. One was rapping along with the jukebox. They had hip hop playing on the jukebox which was cool. I played some video poker at the bar and won $5. I ordered a pizza and it was delicious. And can't forget the 2 for 1 Happy Hour specials. -1 star because the 2 for 1 drinks didn't taste like they had any liquor in them, but hey I guess you get what you pay for.
Review Source:Just on the other side of the NV/CA border and on your way down from the Nevada side of Heavenly is probably the best place in Tahoe for apres. Â The BLTA is awesome and the amount of fries they service up with their sammich is amazing.
the prime rib sammich is also pretty good to go with a solid selection of beers. Â the place gets a bit loud and rowdy, but perfect for sharing your awesome moments in Killebrew Canyon with friends over a pint and some chow.
This place was whatever. Â I was in the area and yelped this spot and it appeared to be a cool looking dive bar. Â It was very dark inside which to me usually makes a good atmosphere. Â Sitting at the bar I realized that this was probably the dimmest bar I had ever been in. Â On a thursday it was super dead. Â They should have some kind of extended happy hour or thursday special to increase legitimacy. Â A bartender that could have cared less reluctantly served me. Â They have 3 Deschutes beers on tap which I guess is good for Nevada. Â I ordered a crabby melt sandwich which sounded pretty good, and was, but was really minimal for being $10. Â Not even a pickle with it. Â After I finished my beer I was up for one more, but instead of asking me if I'd like another, the bartender just asked "you done?" so I said yes, paid my tab, and left. Â
Not a very impressive spot overall.
My group of 4 followed the Yelp reviews and Google provided directions, but the directions led my group astray! We had to ask a local, like in the olden days (gasp!), and could not have been happier. MCT&G has a great atmosphere, a nice selection of beers, and excellent food. Service was also superb. I wish I could recall our server's name...regardless, she was in good spirits and her witty banter made us quickly feel at ease. Next time I'm in the area, I'm definitely heading back.
Review Source:Great place. Cozy and dark with a long natural wood bar. Video poker if you're too lazy to hit the casinos. Good happy hour prices.
I ate the King Crab Melt (has artichoke & jalapeno) and it was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! Â I had a salad instead of fries, and it was a huge portion! Â The bartenders were both very friendly, and made me feel like a friend. (lol)
Will DEFINITELY come back!
Save your stomachs.  Three of us ate here today and all of the food was average to below average.  Apps - fried mushrooms - average, with runny ranch sauce.  My prime rib sandwich  - bun was burnt so that made every bits have a charcoal taste.  The "prime rib" is only available after 2pm which indicates it comes fresh off an actual prime rib... NO WAY.  This was chewy, overcooked sirloin at best. Â
My friend's chicken park (chicken fried chicken with a white cheese and red sauce) was "blah". Â The other guest had a burger that was average as well.
The up side - the beers were cold, the servers very nice girls, and the bathrooms were clean. Â I'd say drink here, but don't eat here!
Best pizza I've had in Tahoe by far!
Have not had the pleasure of receiving service from the cranky bar tender - the blond one was working the day we came in; she was really nice and was very patient with a table full of adults with toddlers.
Great for families for LUNCH. Wouldn't bring our little here after dark.
Nice, wide selection of beer on tap (and bottled) and good selection of appetizers.
The bathrooms are very clean, and full of hilarious signage. Note for parents: There isn't a changing table in the bathroom, so be prepared to bring a changing pad and change diapers on the floor.
Service was fast & friendly - we'll definitely be back.
We didn't actually get to dine in because it was farther from our hotel than we thought. Luckily, they open pretty late and still serve food until 3am. We ordered take out. We got pulled pork sandwich, chili cheese dog and apple pie a la mode.
For a tavern, the food wasn't bad. I am sure it would've tasted better if it wasn't take out and it was after midnight but I think it was a pretty good midnight snack. The chili cheese dog is HUGE and the chili was good. Our fries were a little stale but it seemed like a slow night at the tavern so it probably sat out for a bit. The pulled pork sandwich was good but not great. Good prices, reasonable portion. I wished it was closer to our Heavenly resort and we could've dined in. Seemed like a chill place. They even have some old school arcade pinball machines.
The surprising winner of the meal was the apple pie. Homemade and DELICIOUS! The crust was not too doughy. Plenty of apples and not too sweet, especially with TWO SCOOPS of vanilla ice cream. Order the dessert of the day, you will not regret it.
My Girlfriend and I drove from the San Francisco Bay Area to South Lake Tahoe for the first time together. It was challenging trying to find a bar that didn't feel creepy.
As you walk in you see the bar and fish tank. We arrived after midnight , after a long drive from Reno we stumbled upon Mott Canyon Tavern via smart phones. The positive yelpers pointed us towards some awesome bar food!
Food n Drinks: They have a Nightly Happy Hour. I don't know or remember, but after 4-5 rounds of Hennessey we ordered their RIBS n CRISPY FRENCH FRIES, Full Order, spit between us two. BOY, we were so happy. I was faded - but these were some of the best crispy french fries I have ever had. The Ribs were moist and succulent, with just the right amount of sauce.
The decor, ambiance, and friendly waiter/bartender was a welcome sight for a couple of weary travelers. Before this place, we were wandering aimlessly around the -casino bars- and got tired of having second hand smoke blown in our grill(s).
Even if you are staying at South Lake Tahoe's Harrah's, Montbleu, Lakeside Inn, Etc. Etc. I highly recommend this place. ESPECIALLY their Nightly Late Nite Happy Hour which offers a 2 for 1 drink special. I love 2 for 1 drink specials.
b.t.w. we left pretty hammered  and I know you shouldn't drive drunk - thankfully we stayed at the Lakeside Inn which is half a mile away... but umm yeah I wouldn't have done that wit mama around .
fin~ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â =o)
Hubby requested a late lunch here plus to watch Football!
The place wasn't too busy and there were PLENTY of tv's playing Directv Football games and a baseball game. Our waitress was cool. Â She was also the bartender. Â A blonde, very nice and checked on us and refilled drinks. Â No complaints! Â
DH order a bacon burger. Â It looked really good and juicy with lettuce tomato and onion plus cheese and bacon. Â He isn't too sure if the burger's are THE best thing on their menu but isn't too sure what is. I ordered a Prime Melt. Â It is like a sourdough grilled swiss cheese with tomatos, onion and thinly sliced prime rib. Â But there wasn't much meat and that was dissappointing. Â Both came with a HUGE amount of crispy fries. Â Their fries are really good. Â There is a seasoned coating ont here that makes it extra crunchy.
I totally agree with Mase! I've been in on more than one occasion to watch games and that same bartender Maryelle or something like that--I think she is from Iowa (is often wearing that jersey)-- is always extremely rude. The worst customer service ever. She makes you feel like you are bothering her to do anything--even when there is like no one in there....
I've been in other times and have witnessed her behaving the same way to other patrons, so at least it's not personal to me-ha! Equal opportunity offender! I'm surprised she still has a job in this place. Definitely encourages me to get my beer from staff that make me feel welcome.
The blonde bubbly girl, Sheri-or Shannon, however, is 100% the opposite. Always friendly, positive and accommodating. I like going in when she is working.
I absolutely LOVE this place. Specifically at night! The 2 for 1 after 10 is amazing. The wings and onion rings are delicious. I recommend getting teriyaki and buffalo sauces! The fact that they serve food until 3 am is absolutely fabulous! The boys that serve at night are super friendly and attentive. This is a great local's spot and you'll always have a great time!
ONLY downside is during the day... We have gone in only once during the day due to an extremely rude female server named mary something. We weren't greeted upon entering and had to wait a good amount of time before she had acknowledged us. We had came in to watch a stanley cup game and grab some lunch. There were two other gentlemen sitting at the bar area and there were plenty of TV's available. We asked kindly if she wouldn't mind putting the game on any one of the TV's and she let us know that this wasn't our living room. So after finishing our beers we decided to go elsewhere for lunch and return for some Mott grub after 10 :)
Its a late night favorite for locals, though I dont go there much as I live on the other side of town. Whoever yelped this place as 'good for kids' however, is mistaken. I consider it a bar which also serves food, and just wanted to take up the extra space by adding some tables. In reality, when I am having drinks here, and I look over and see some family eating at one of the tables, I find it just strange. They are one of the only places that serves food late (which is typical delicious greasy bar food) and they have a great late night happy hour too!
Review Source:We went here with the rug rats becuase it said "good for kids" on Yelp. Â No sir--not good for kids. Â At least not little kids. Â The music was super loud, I could barely hear my man, let alone the kiddos. Â Food was meh--the buffalo chicken salad didn't sit well with hubby (if you catch my drift). Â
Also, for a place this big, on a weekend at dinner time...I suggest more service. Â The bartender was trying to work the tables too and it was just a bit slow. Â She was overworked.
Next time we'll stick with the Fox and Hound.
An eclectic place. We like it enough that we're regulars during ski season. The food isn't fancy, and a lot of it is pretty heavy, but after a day of skiing, a burger or fish and chips or pizza sounds pretty good. Their menu isn't dirt cheap, but it isn't as expensive as many of the other places around South Lake Tahoe. The service is always very friendly and the two of us have never had to wait for a place to sit. We always leave smiling.
Interesting amenities: a giant table down the center seats a huge group but also works a bit like a bar, where many people sit comfortably. There are lots of 4-person tables you can put together if you need to. Ancient Simpsons pinball and a jukebox. The bar is nice and long, though the gambling consoles are annoying. Big salt water aquarium to keep the kids entertained.
It can be a little cold because the ceilings are high and people are always coming and going through the big door, but with the giant fireplace going, you can warm up nicely. I always wear a sweater and a scarf, just in case.
Strangely, it is a great place for families and at the same time is a great place to go out drinking. I don't know how they manage it, but it works.
Great place for late night munchies that was close to our hotel (The Ridge Resorts) and still open at 10:30pm.
I was plesantly surprised by this place! I didn't expect the food to be as good as it was, well as good as you can make my fav bar food chicken strips! They were fried, crunchy and hit the spot. I also substitued the fries for a salad. Salad at a bar, hold up! Well it was delicious. The lettuce was fresh romaine, not a brown piece in it, crunchy cucumbers, croutons, shredded veggies, and it was huge! Not just a small salad, it took up half my plate. I did try the fries though and they were quite yummy so I would definitely recommend those as well.
Also, 2 for 1 beers on a Saturday after 10pm, how fantastic! I wish more bars had that, what a steal! It also wasn't too crowded and was a great place to just relax and chill.
This place was AWESOME.
Our waitress was super friendly and hilarious throughout the night, it wasn't crowded at all when we went on a Saturday, and the food was just what we were looking for.
Artichoke hearts on the pizza - and every day after 10pm it's buy one get one free drinks... if they were in San Francisco I would be a regular.
3 Stars is tops for Mott Canyon. Very dark, sticky floor tavern would be a good description of this place. Well, if the floors aren't actually sticky, it's the sort of pub that when you walk in, you expect they should be.
They do have some umbrella adorned tables on their outdoor patio in the summer.
The three stars are for the fries..my faves! ...and when I get a hankering for a tuna melt or prime rib melt with cheddar and tomato on sourdough, or the Prime Rib Tallac with jack and green chiles on sourdough.
Oh, and they have corona with lime....
2 years ago I would have given this place 5 stars. Standard pub fare. I was very disappointed with the chinese chicken salad but then again maybe I shouldn't have ordered a CCS in a pub? Bag of lettuce, sliced fried chicken strips, airline peanuts and crunchy chow mein noodles from a can?! That wasn't in the menu description. I made a semi-complaint to the waiter that the menu didn't specify fried vs. grilled chicken ...all he said in response was 'Yeah, it's fried'.
On the other hand, DH ordered tuna melt and love it + their special potato bacon blue cheese salad which was pretty good. Â
I still plan to return to this place and hope this was an isolated event.
Good beer, good vibe, good food. Nothing wrong with the place at all.
We took our kids on a weekday night, and sat next to the fish tank. Mott Canyon Tavern is a dark place, more Tavern than Grill, but not inappropriate for kids. There was no smoking when we were there--I'm sure I'd have been negative about the place if it had been filled with smoke from the bar, but it wasn't.
The food was just fine. We had burritos and tacos, and they were quite good. Worth another trip. Service was good.
Fun dive bar near the Nevada entrance to Heavenly.
Last place I would guess to find a huge salt water fish tank, but it sits smack dab in the middle of the place.
Didn't eat anything, but the food coming out looked like traditional bar grubb. Greasy, deep fried, and served in plastic baskets. The way I love it.
Definitely a local hangout, but its a fun place to apres ski.
I suppose i would make an easy target for the mob if i was ever in trouble. Â My routine is so predictable that they would know exactly where to find me. Â Wake up, eat at Red Hut, ski, eat at Mott Canyon, hit the spa. Â
Everything on this menu is awesome. Â Do not get the healthy salad instead of the fries. Â You are missing the best part. Â I think this place still has a mean happy hour where ladies drink well drinks for almost nothing.
