We go here all the time but last the service we received was beyond bad. The place was not busy at all and it took over 20 min to get our first round of beers for the four of us (one beer was wrong) then when we got our app "soon to be famous nachos" it was burnt and had almost nothing on them. After waiting and waiting and waiting we finally got our burgers about 2 hours after we ordered them and they were beyond burnt, they were not edible. The waitress could not be found, i had to go in and talk to the bartender, who told me the waitress we had was useless!
All winter long this place had the best "soon to be famous nachos" and service. But after last night we won't go back till they make a change.
Love this place. Â There are so many good places in Newport but this one has small town charm in a unique setting.
Great mix of beers on tap, probably 15 or so, with some nice regional beers in the mix. Â Food menu is standard pub fare but everything I've eaten here, from the pizza to fish and chips to their outstanding burgers, is above average. Â The back of the bar opens up (literally) onto the right field of the baseball stadium. Â Unique, friendly and a good value. Â Love it!
Seriously one of the best Margarita pizzas i've ever had! Its hand tossed and grilled and just delicious! They also have this super yummy vodka that soaks in this large container with pineapple and it comes out tasting like pineapple-y water....sweet and refreshing, doesn't even taste like vodka. I will definitely be back!
Review Source:Ok I have to start this off by saying I have not had a hamburger in over four years....not by choice but by need. Â Anyway. Â I use to come here all the time and have hamburgers and their dirty fries and loved it. Â I just with a bunch of friends and as I ate my salad they were digging into their Boursin Stuffed Burger which is basically a jelly doughnut but with meat. Â And I have to tell you I almost broke.
If I go off the wagon I am coming here for a stuffed hamburger. Â Forget Morton's, screw Ruth Chris popo on Smith's and Wolansky this is the place to come. Â It would even be better if it was the summer and there was a Gulls game playing at Cardine's field.
Damn.
It's Friday and today my buddy (Mr.X) and I went over the big bridge to the home of the tourist. Newport. But it is winter and the tourist are gone seeking warmer climates. Thank goodness.
We chose Mudville for two reasons. First, because I've heard the have great food especially the burgers. Second, because almost all the review here are very good. So lets see what happened on our visit yesterday, 1/11/12.
I love the bar and that is where we plopped our tired butts down. I should note that this place has NO parking. Street parking only with public parking across the street for free.....IN THE WINTER ONLY!
The place was pretty empty with 4 customers. 2 at the bar, 2 sitting down. The bartender came to us immediately and asked us if we would like a drink. I wanted a beer and was a little overwhelmed by what they had on tap. She pointed to the wall where a chalkboard listed all the beers they had. She said if the title had an "X" next to it, they were out. OK, I wanted a Bud LIght draft out. Coors Light draft, out. And on and on it went. Come on guys....REALLY? There's no excuse for that. I know its winter and the tourists are gone but come on. I settled for a Coors Light in bottle, Mr X had a Miller Light. Lets move on to the good stuff!
Typical of most Newport Restaurants....nothing is cheap but we knew that when we came because we looked here first.
We read about the "Soon to be famous Pot Roast Nachos ($12)" so we ordered one of those and some wings with barbecue and asian sauce mixed ($9). The bartender recommended the mixed wings.
The Nacho portion was huge and there were about 9 wings ($1 each). More than enough for two guys needing to lose some tonage.
An interesting concept....Pot Roast Nachos. It might have been good if I could find more than just a few scraps of the Pot Roast. As a matter of fact, there wasn't much in the way of toppings on them at all. As a result, they were dry and pretty much tasteless. We both agreed on that point. Maybe like the beer, they were out of the toppings. Really? We were pretty disappointed.
On the other plate, the wings were much better. They were plump and the combination of asian and barbecue sauce make a sticky gooey delicious combo. But on the other hand, we know a place in NK where you can get .25 wings on Wednesday and they aren't all bad.
So the total for the nachos, wings and 3 bottled beers was like 34.00 Spitting the bill with Mr.X cost me 20.00 with tip. Way too much for lunch when you are NOT a tourist.
BRING your gold card.....you'll need it here.
Poor experience!!! Went in for a late lunch. Ordered apps and burgers for 2. Waited over 45 minutes, no food. We watched  tables that sat after us being served, same food as we ordered. The Waitress kept telling us it would be just a minute longer. The final straw was another table gets sat. They place a nacho  order. The owner stops by and chats with them and their nachos show right up. Still we have no wings, no chili or burgers. We told the waitress that we were now leaving. We expressed that we felt the whole situation was just insulting.  She was aware that our order was not coming out but did nothing to rectify it.
Review Source:Stopped in after a trip to the beach with two friends. Â We were the only people there, but the staff didn't seem annoyed by that. Â The girl working the bar was great, told us all about the history of the place and the ballpark outback. Â We even went to check it out on our way out the door. Â Food was surprisingly good. Â When the chowder first came out I thought it was going to be to watery, but it turned out to be delicious, even on a hot summer day!
Review Source:The good part was the food. Â Portions were nice size and the food was flavorful. Â We ate the blue cheese stuffed burger and it was delicious.
I only rated 3 stars because the service was really slow (30 minutes before we placed our lunch order and still had to wait another 30 minutes to be served.) Also, the cleanliness was not up to par. Â The place is dark, but still looks run down and dingy. Â And the bathroom stunk like a litter box (odd, because I am pretty sure they don't have cats.) Â The smell of urine was pretty strong. Â They had a rug in the bathroom that was wet. Â The whole bar section smelled like a moldy wet dishtowel.
One of the best beer selections in town! Great place to go if watching the Newport Gulls or just want to chill.
I got the pot roast nachos and I literally high-fived my boyfriend for picking such a great appetizer. Who would of thought to put a comfort food ON a comfort food?! Adds so much flavor to the nachos. Mudville does it right because they layer the cheese between the chips, not just a heap of shit on top which gets reaaal nasty.
When you check Mudville on Facebook you can get one app half off and then they add 20% to your bill which is a fair deal to me.
The people who were here are awesome and laidback. Great place to be!
We stayed at the Hyatt close by and I asked the shuttle driver to suggest a divish type bar to watch the Nats vs Red Sox game. He suggested Mudvilles and I am glad he did. Â Some of the other reviews I read here didn't match our experience at all. There are tons of beers here and the HD TVs were great and turned to the game.
We had lobster rolls with sweet potato fries. It was very good, we actually considered coming back the following day to order it again but we had to drive back to DC before they opened. I didn't care for having to pay $2 more for the sweet potato fries, but they were good nonetheless.
If I ever go back to Newton I'll come back to Mudville's.
I was so disappointed with The Mudville Pub. The service was terrible! We waited for about 12 minutes and still no server paying us attention but a table of 6 guys come in and they were served immediately! They were right next to us. I went and complained to the hostess and a server came after that to take our order but we continued to wait for a second drink and to pay our bill. The nachos that we ordered were ok but nothing special. We will not go back.
Review Source:Went to Mudville on 3/22/12 because I wanted to watch the Sweet 16 and the bar I was at wanted to play the PRESEASON Red Sox v. Yankees game instead. Â But enough of that rant.
This was my first time in Mudville. Â I had heard about it before but never stopped by. Â It's definitely not easy to spot if you're not looking for it directly. Â It is in a great location being connected to the baseball park.
My first thought upon walking in was that it's a very clean, nice looking pub with a good amount of TVs (big & small) for whatever you want to watch. Â Next thought once I moved over to the bar was that they crammed all the chairs they could find around the bar. Â I'm not a small guy but most bars I can sit comfortably, here the chairs were literally right next to each other with no space in between. Â Which for only a few people being there was very uncomfortable since every time I moved my arm I hit another chair.
The bartender was very nice and was more than willing to make sure the Louisville v. Michigan State game was on one of the bar TVs (Go Cards!). Â Mudville has a good size menu and good drink specials including $9/$12 pitchers. Â I started with just some drinks as I was waiting for some friends. Â Then eventually ordered the calamari. Â Let me tell you I've had all kinds of calamari and have never found one I didn't like (even one with big tomatoes in it and I hate tomatoes but it still tasted good). Â The calamari I had was very very over cooked and the pieces were so small I'm not sure where they go them from. Â I told the bartender I couldn't eat them because they were so bad. Â He immediately threw them out after telling the kitchen staff. Â He then removed them from my bill and gave me paper and asked if I wanted to write a note to the owner about it (great idea!).
If I didn't order the calamari and with the small amount of people that were there it wasn't horribly uncomfortable on the chairs like it would be if it was packed. Â The bar is very clean and looks good and is in a great location right off America's Cup. Â Also good service.
I do suggest Mudville just be careful what you order, maybe ask for recommendations from the staff first.
I usually give my ratings based on the food, but this rating is based on the service. The food is typical "meh" pub food - nothing special in my opinion. But what made this place stand out is the service. Some friends and I went to Mudville to watch the Patriots for my boyfriend's 30-something birthday. The game was set to start at 8pm. The other couple in our party of 4 went back home to let their dogs out so my boyfriend and I went a little early (around 7:45pm) to get a table. The place is crowded; most of the tables were taken, but we were lucky and found a table in the area by the back door that had its own separate TV. Within 5 minutes of sitting down a waitress came by to give us menus and get us drinks. When she brought us our drinks we told her we were expecting friends and that we'd like to order food when they got here. The lovely waitress then asked us what our friends looked like so that when she saw them she could direct them to us!
Throughout the night our waitress must have come by another 5 times to make sure we were doing well and to get us more beer or food or napkins. The owner came by to make sure the volume on the TV was loud enough so that we could hear the game.
The beer is reasonably priced and they serve tap beers in an imperial pint (16oz instead of 12oz). A pitcher of 'Gansett runs you $9.00 and for the fancier brews, $12.00. Â
I'd definitely go back!
Oooh Crudville, or Browntown, or whatever you want to call it. We hit this place up after work on wed and sundays when Mark O'Donnell is working. Hes full of good dirty jokes, and doesnt take shit from anyone. Its a great place to just have a beer (and they have a great list!) and on Sundays while football is going on, you can get a  menu where everything is like $5. WHO can beat that??
Its also a great place to kick back after our kickball games at Cardines.
Place used to be great, but since the owners have changed, NOT. I doubt we'll go back. No food? No fries? NO BEER ON TAP? What? They only had a few choice of bottled beer. The burgers here used to be the best. Yes, a limited menu, but limited is fine when what's offered is top of the line. They probably don't have HD because they haven't even been ordering beer/food.
Review Source:When you are visiting Newport on a crowded summer weekend and you just want to hide out for a few hours from family and friends then the Mudville is  the place for you. It's location is close to all the harbor action but still off the beaten path of the high traffic tourist area.
If you want a while tablecloth gourmet burger with a trendy hip staff forget it. The pub is dark and small with a large selection of beers. The burgers are ok. They tend to be very greasy along with the usual side items like onion rings or fries. Mudville has a steak sandwich which is a 7 ounce piece of strip steak on a toasted roll that was pretty good. The drinks are pretty good and the prices are cheaper then some of the places closer to the piers.
Parking in the area is impossible. Save yourself a stoke and just pay to park across the street in lot. Mudville is not my first choice in the area but in a pinch they are ok for a afternoon of beers, sports and some food.
Well.....I had heard the Mudville HAD the best burger in Newport. Â So, naturally, after the renovation it was on the "To Try" List. Â Sadly, I think my kibble would've been a better option. Â The "Appetizer" was chips (stale) and dip (guessing El Paso). Â The signature burger wasn't much to write home about either.
On the plus side - the beer was wet and cold. Â It's a nicely done bar, but......not a place that's on the "Try Again" List. Â Woof.
Went to this place with friends and it had a great vibe to grab a beer and be as loud as you want. We sat down for dinner and it was to be expected that it was typical pub style average food moderatly priced and run of the mill. The staff was not too friendly and it was just so-so. I liked te drinking part better than the eating part. The dinner was just an average meal at a drinking hole. The decor is dark and pub like and the location is on a side street not far from the trendy downtown. Skip it, you arent missing much, especially in the summer when most places have an outside patio.
Review Source:HOW CAN YOU NOT HAVE THE HD PACKAGE???
This place has big, huge (expensive) HDTVs all over the joint - but no HD signal!! Â WTF?! Â We went to watch Game 6 of the ALCS, friends meeting us on the way over said "good choice" with Mudville, since Pour Judgement and Fastnet were packed when he drove by. Â Now I see why - they have HD. Â Stupid stupid stupid. Â
The food is decent - and the burgers really are the bomb. I got the blue cheese stuffed burger with cajun rub and bacon. Â Need i say more? Â My fries were ok, they have Smithwicks on tap (which would earn the diviest hole a star in my book) and pretty decent ambiance for what it is. Â Our server was very friendly and chatty.
But seriously Mudville, GET HD. Â I won't go back to your establishment to watch sports until you do. Â I'll bet that's why other places were packed and you weren't - the additional business you'd get would pay for itself in about 5 minutes.
I'm torn between saying I love this place and that it totally sucks. Â I've been to Mudville's three times and had three totally different experiences. Â The food was fantastic twice and mediocre once. Â The service was exceptional twice and totally non-existent once.
I'll probably keep going back, but possibly at my own peril. Â As mentioned in some of the other reviews, they do make an awesome burger.
I actually dig this place. Â It's not great, but it's fine. Â I'd give it 4 stars, Â but one time I ordered one of their stuffed burgers and it came out almost completely raw. Â I can only imagine the cook put the burger on and counted to 10 as some sort of 'calm-the-fuck-down' scheme and promptly took the burger off the grill because he/she is ADD in addition to being an angry person. Â They did actually cook the burger once I brought it to the waitress's attention.
Anyway, other than that odd shit, Mudville has been fine. Â The chain-link fence enclosed back-patio, where you can watch Newport Gulls games, is cool. Â Not the best way to view a game, but you can drink and watch something other than Newporters (not that that isn't really entertaining in and of itself). Â
Also, no cover here. Â At least I've never experienced it. Â There's nothing cover-worthy here either, but that sure as shit doesn't stop other bars in Newport.
My recent travels to Newport led me here, Mudville, for lunch. It was after 2 but the place was still packed with all Newport's preppiest--we opted to sit out back on Red Bull tabletops and stools, overlooking a Newport ball-park and a strange game of cricket. The music was terrible--a mix of Fine Young Cannibals, Goo Goo Dolls, Kelly Clarkson, and Billy Joel. No consistency whatsoever. No personality.
The menu was unimpressive with pizzas, sandwiches, and salads in the forefront. I didn't linger too long over the dinner menu as I was sure it would be equally dismissable. I got the fish sandwich--when I ordered the waitress asked me if i wanted lettuce, tomato, and onion. I said all three, please. My sandwich arrived with only a piece of standard lettuce. I asked for the rest of my accoutrements--she didn't return with them until 10 minutes later and I was on the last bite of my sandwich. Hey, I was hungry and she was a dingbat. The facts of life. She was apologetic, of course, but too little, too late. Oh, and my french fries were COLD, over fried, and there was oil from them leaking all over my plate. My friends' fries, by contrast, were underdone, but still oily.
Have I made myself clear yet? Mudville sucks. Don't go here unless you prefer to be uninspired and/or are self-loathing. You'll definitely hate yourself more for going here.
