Drove in rain from La Grange to Winchester on a sat night. 45 min wait turned into 1 1/2 hour wait, while listening to others come in and tell how they knew they made reservations but for whatever reason were not on the books, then they were seated and we were again bumped back. After we were seated no one waited on us for over 15 minutes. Waitresses waited on everyone around us but never even stopped to see if we had been waited on, hard not to notice. We had to get up and go to a waitress and ask could we possibly be waited on. She came to us and said our waitress was helping the table behind us, 10-12 people. She took our drink orders and 10 minutes later our waitress came. She was very personable but had to much to do and we were going to get the short end of the stick. Took a while to get our order, 3 of us ordered steaks, 1 sirloin and 2 filets. The filets were ordered medium rare and blood was pouring out of our steaks, I for one could not eat such a rare steak and after another 5 min finally got the attention of our waitress. She put my potatoe in a styrofoam container took my steak and it was over 15 min later when I got up went to the bar and asked could the boy behind the counter find out about my steak, no one else to ask. Waitress came out later with steak and it was gray, still blood red on the inside, I was not going to eat this either. Â She said she would take it off the bill, in the interim the bartender came over at the same time and said he would get me another wine on him, at which time I told him I did not want a second glass of wine. My daughter was giving me pieces of her steak and my friend was eating her raw steak. Our bill was totally screwed up and I took it over to the bar to have someone explain what it all meant. I was charged for the 2 glasses of wine, salad bar, bean bar and a baked potatoe. The bartender was rude and immature and sarcastic. They took off the one glass of wine, which was still full on my table and informed me when someone orders the $20 steak and doesn't like it you are still charged for everything else. I could have asked for the raw steak and taken it home for my dog, and come out better on the bill. Shameful, it was my daughters birthday, I am eating part of her steak out of a styrofoam box at 9:00 at night and dealing with this bologna, and an immature boy behind the bar. He told me he gave me a free glass of wine, what else did I want. I told him I was driving and did not want another glass of wine, had finished the one I had, would have liked to have drank it with my filet that was never cooked properly. Just a ripoff and not friendly at all.
Review Source:I'll give it five stars because I can get steak, a side, and a cheap salad for less than $20. This is what a five-star $20 steak tastes like.
If I had this same steak at an expensive downtown Austin restaurant, it wouldn't be worth three stars.
It was fun to go out and check out this place. Â I liked that I could wear a torn up t-shirt and hat. Â Couldn't be more casual.
Great steaks and let me warn you now you should order at least one size smaller than you would normally eat since the steaks are HUGE.....the baked potato was on the small size and the salad bar is average but the free beans make up for it. Call ahead if your going on a weekend since the wait can be long. Its very worth the drive and if you save some room go next door and visit the Ice Cream Parlor which was my grandkids favorite part of the evening.
Update to the first rating.....was so excited about this place that I invited a friend to make the drive from Houston to eat at Murphy's. I gushed praise all the way there and of course what happens, yep you guessed it, the food was crap.
My friend ordered a ribeye medium and it came out half fat and the rest tough as shoe leather. I ordered the New York Strip Medium and I get a steak with the blood still oozing out. We waited over 25 minutes for our waitress to stop hanging out and talking to her friends to come by and ask how the meal was....My now cold baked potato was put on a new plate and handed back to me and my steak was taken to the kitchen where it hung out for another 25 minutes before being brought back to tough to chew. My friends meal wasnt even commented on. When checking out the man taking the money didnt even acknowledge I was standing in front on him other than to tell me the cost and hold his hand out for $$$, no eye contact at all. The lady hanging around the bar/cash register asked how the steak was after it went back to the kitchen since she had seen how raw it was. When I told her that it was unedible and was going home as dog food she didnt say a word but turned around and picked up the phone and made a call. TRUE customer service. Well I have now had a 5 star and a less than 1 star meal so dont really feel that I will take another chance on the food and the people to make the drive again.
Cool old building ,Steak sandwich  grilled onions flavor just right was very nice. The onion rings were very good, ice tea was best I have tasted, Server was excellent an cute too,  The staff was friendly an very pretty just a nice place  I love it , Will go back for the food and the red head soon
Review Source:We discovered Murphy's by accident one Saturday while out riding motorcycles. Â We have been back many times since. Â Recently we have been riding out from Houston to Murphy's for dinner then riding back to Houston, (a 200 mile round trip). It is that good. Â The staff is friendly and don't let the huge number of cars discourage you, there are plenty of tables.
Review Source:We were invited to dine here with some friends. Â We called ahead to make dinner reservations and asked what the corkage fee was since we enjoy a good wine with our steak. Â We were told over the phone that the corkage fee $8. Â Not a big deal. Â So later off we went and once we were seated, the waitress said it was a $15 corkage fee. Â We told her what we had been quoted on the phone, she double checked, and said it would be $15. Â Ok, fine, but then she brought a corkscrew to our table and left without opening and serving the wine! Â Um, what are you charging $15 for? Â So, we had to open and serve the wine ourselves and proceeded to request to speak with the manager/owner about what a corkage fee is. Â The waitress did apologize and explain most patrons bring in crown, not wine. Â LOL, ok, but we prefer a nice wine with our steak. Â So it would be nice if everyone was trained to open and serve wine, especially if you are going to charge so much. Â Corkage fee aside, the meal was good. Â We especially enjoyed the tasty onion rings, beans, and huge steaks.
Review Source:Very Disappointed!!! Been eating here for years, but the last 3 times were bad. Quality of meat was very disappointing compared to past years. The prices have gone up while the quality has gone down. It is very upsetting this use to be a our favorite restaurant and I don't think we will be back.
Review Source:PURE HOWDY !!! This is one of my all time favorite places to eat anywhere !! I am in the area often for work and when I am I HAVE to go for lunch !! Ok the food...everything is fantastic, the steaks are hand cut and cooked to perfection, the fetuccini Alfredo is delicious, a whole plate full, Â and the Alfredo sauce is homemade, burgers are big and tasty, the salad bar is great and you have to try the beans !! The place is pure Texas all the way, the portions are Texas size, the decor is old and eclectic- kind of a barn style meets old Post Office complete with a saloon girls leg lamp on the bar ! The waitstaff is precious, always super friendly. I haven't been there in the evening or on a week end, because I know better- but it is most definitely worth the wait !!!
Review Source:We are lucky in that we only live 7 miles from Murphy's Steakhouse, so we go there frequently. You just have to try their 12 ounce rib eye. They hand cut their steaks, and the menu has a note that says they sell it by the inch, not ounce. Believe it. It is almost a roast, but oh so good. Their salad bar is good, but I do wish they had fruit on it. With ever meal you can get a cup of beans at the salad bar, and they are great. Their onion rings are big and wonderful. You get five on a small order, but that's more than you can eat. Their fried shrimp are huge, and also wonderful. The catfish is great, too. The restaurant is in a hundred year old building that was and still is a US Post Office. The decor is simple and the floors concrete and the ceiling is tin. If you go to the restroom, be sure to walk down the small hall to the men's room. At the end of the hall is a picture of some nude women that were once a part of the La Grange Chicken Ranch, which was the basis for the Best Little Whor House in Texas movie. I love Texas, and Murphy's!!
Review Source:First visit last night and I went with my GNO group. Â We can be a tough group with several who are not afraid to speak candidly about their meals. Â I wanted a steak but was nudged to order the fried shrimp instead. Â I can only say that these were the largest, best fried shrimp that I've ever had! Â The onion rings were superb as well, a "must order" in my opinion. Â The kicker and may I state, the best part of the entire evening, had to be the "fresh from the oven" BREAD PUDDING"!! Oh-la-la!! I'll be back, For sure!
Review Source:What I absolutely love about Texas every time I visit is the good 'ol southern hospitality. Â Texans are wonderful, and their food is as well.
Murphy's is truly a hidden gem. Â Situated in the outskirts of the country side, most who frequent this place are locals or from the neighboring cities. Â My in-laws, who lives about 30 miles from WInchester took me here. Â We went before 6:00 pm and it was already packed. Â Go around 7pm and there will be at least 1/2 to one hour waiting line. Â If I were you, I'd definitely make a reservation to be on the safe side.
Okay, being a transplant from the SF Bay Area and after living in NoVa for a few years, I've had myself quite a few good steaks. Â Murphy's will be on the top of the five star list. Â This place doesn't joke around. Â They can cook up one mean steak, I tell ya! Â I ordered the 10oz ribeye (see attached pic) medium rare and it came out just the way I like it. Â I cut into the steak and the juices just seep out. Â The steak is amazingly flavorful, tender, juicy, and fresh. Â It's exactly what beef is supposed to taste like!!! Â
The steak came with a salad bar, and the veggies were fresh and pinto beans were great! Â Make sure to get a side of onion rings. Â We ordered a small side of it and the portions were HUGE. Â The steaks were huge, and their ice cold sweet tea was in a huge cup. Â I tell ya, everything is BIGGER in Texas!!
The service was fantastic and the waitresses were all very sweet! Â It's a very nice, casual (you can wear jeans!) type of family run local restaurant ... love it!
To top off the dinner, you must order their homemade pies. Â Their coconut creme pie and pecan pies are a must try! Â Remember ... it's pea-can pie! ;)
Yep, we already went back to Murphy's. Â After hearing about how much my husband and I liked it, my mom really wanted to go. Â
Because of work schedules, paychecks, etc., we ended up going on a Friday evening. Â Yes, I know that's what I told you not to do. Â But we all went there straight after work, so were there by 5:15 or so. Â The place was nearly full even at that early time, but we did get a table right away. Â
Got a small order of onion rings as an appetizer and they were very good. Â Light/nongreasy, firm, and the batter stayed on. Â We didn't even finish the small order though because we knew there was much more food coming. Â
My mom and my husband both ordered the middle size of New York Strip, cooked medium. Â I'd warned them that it would be too big, but htis fell on deaf ears. Â She asked for a baked potato as a side (of course), and he wanted rice. Â I ordered the chicken fried chicken with a baked potato. Â
We all went up to the salad bar after ordering. Â The beans were even better than they were on my last visit because the container was full and they were fresher. Â The pieces of real bacon available on the salad bar were a great addition to the baked potatoes we got later. Â
As we waited for our food, we saw that the restaurant was completely full other than the big family tables, and that many folks were waiting to be seated. Â I was definitely glad that we got there when we did.
Our food didn't take too long to arrive. Â All of it was good. Â The steaks were a bit on the rare side for "medium," but not enough for my husband or my mom to send them back. Â The steaks were huge and both of them took home leftovers (my mom never does this, preferring to just leave food on her plate to be disposed of, so this was a surprise). Â They both enjoyed their sides. Â I thought my baked potato was better than the last one I'd had at Murphy's (which was good anyway). Â My chicken was good, the portion wasn't exaggerated as much as I'd expected, but it was still enough that I took some of it home and had a good sandwich a couple of days later. Â
We decided to get pie to go, so my husband and I each asked for a slice of coconut cream pie, and my mom got a slice of chocolate pie. Â The meringue was the highest we've ever seen (and my mom and I are actually good at the lost art of making meringue, so that's saying something). Â The pie was good when we tried it the next day ... nice texture, perhaps a bit too sweet (didn't ask how mom liked her pie, but it must have been okay or she'd have told us). Â
The best part? Â With tip, our share of the bill was around $35. Â Yes, counting the pie and enough food for each of us to have another meal.
If for some strange reason you find yourself in Winchester, Tx., you can't go wrong here. Everything is homemade - our table had shrimp, catfish, and chicken fried chicken. All were great. Onion rings were outstanding. Salad bar is good and bean bar is fantastic. Â Murphy's is a restaurant and post office - very cool building. Staff was super- friendly. This place is worth a trip out of your way just for fun.
Review Source:Oh dear God! Â Just about an hour's road trip from Austin, or long enough to listen to a Gary P. Nunn CD.... Â
This is the most quintessentially Texan restaurant I've been to in a long time -- and certainly the most Texan restaurant around Austin. Â Steaks (hand-cut, and tending to be more than generous with the size of the cut), burgers, Tex-Mex, seafood, and the BEST chicken fried steak around. Â For a place that's not a wide spot in the road, they also have a nice salad bar.
The waitresses are exceedingly sweet, but I'll warn you that they can get a bit harried during the weekend dinner rush, so be patient. Â I also recommend dinner reservations as the wait can become long on the weekends.
Well worth the drive and definitely THE place to take your non-Texas friends when they visit.
OK - nobody go here. Â I mean it the lines are long to get in and I don't want to start going just at lunch on Saturdays to get my fix. Â Excellent little family run place with big food. Great owners, incredible instincts for what people will like and just far enough to need to speed slightly and hurry there. Join me next trip - I am buying. Â What a spot.
