Tonight we took our twin daughters to 99 Newport to celebrate their 9th birthday. Â
I almost vomited when one of the girls pulled a big fingernail clipping out of her mouth and said it was from the ice cream sundae she was eating. Â The manager confirmed that it was a fingernail clipping and said she would talk to the staff about being more careful. Â Really?? Â More careful?? How about talking to them about not clipping their nails in the kitchen!! Â I'm sickened by the whole event.
Always enjoyed eating at the Pub 99. Â The bar area is usually kept in a nice clean state and there's always lots of seats with good views of TV.
The food is good for a chain restaurant. Â I don't stray too much from my usual few dishes but I never seem to get a bad meal. Â Most of the time if an appetizer and main dish are ordered, some food comes home with us, which is always nice.
Staff are always super friendly.
The music could be improved, they are all over the map and its usually the WORST music you could hear.
I don't know if the 99 has improved since the last time I went, but I was pretty disappointed with the last few times I went. Â The food was rarely cooked well, and it was apparent that such an issue was hardly an anomaly, as the bartender had already taken everything off our bill that wasn't fully consumed. Â I do have to give him credit for doing that, which is why I give 3 stars and not less.
Review Source:I would compare this restaurant to the likes of Applebee's or Chili's. Â The prices are as reasonable but the quality of food is much better. Â They have spectacular entree specials for $9.99. Â I've had the New Orleans shrimp, the balsamic grilled chicken, the New England fried shrimp, and the chicken and sausage al forno. Â I have not been disappointed with a single meal, both in portion size and taste. Â The 99 reasons to love Ninety Nine signs that hang around the restaurant are kind of cheesy, but I don't care.
It is a casual dining place so don't expect a gourmet meal, but it is definitely good food and generous portions at a great price.
My first experience with this establishment was not under the best of circumstances. Â We had just moved here, nothing was unpacked and we needed to pick up a few things from the store to survive the night. Â We saw this place nearby and decided to have a go and were pleasantly surprised at how good this place actually is.
At first glance you would think this place is just a cheap Applebees rip-off, but it is actually surpasses them by a large margin.
The food is pretty remarkable. Â A little heavy on the sodium, but otherwise on par with most local places that charge top-notch price, and even better than some. Â
The atmosphere is what you would expect. Â The music reminds me of high school and college, so it doubly resonates with me. Â They serve beer, so hooray!
Word of caution, many places like this are only as good as what you order. Â If you order a BBQ brisket and expect Texas, you have no one to blame but yourself. Â If you want a decent generic steak with a nice glaze and good side, you'll be just fine. Â If you just want a nice dinner with the kids, give it a shot. Â Expect 10-15 dollars a person, more if you include alcohol.

Pre-dinner popcorn: a fun snack & the kids loved it.
Kids meals: great portions! Quesadilla comes with pico & lettuce on the side & a side & a drink (juice or milk is an option, yay)
Fish tacos: were quite good, but not quite enough fish on each one. Sauce was mayo mostly with something mixed in. Needed more toppings. Came with dried shredded cabbage.
Chicken fajitas: the worst my dad has ever had. He orders them just about everywhere. Overly seasoned. Dried out meat.
Casual family dining, but definitely nicer than Friendly's or similar places. Â Much better value than Ruby Tuesday. Â This particular location in Newport has been known to support the military, which is a definite plus. Â Last year we were treated to a free Easter dinner for our whole family, and the kids were all given Easter goodies as well. Â They always give a 10% discount to military. Â I think it's interesting that they give "free" popcorn before your meal. Â I don't quite understand it because it tends to help fill us up, so I have never had room for dessert there. Â My absolute favorite dish there is the Sweet Southern Fried Chicken. Â I never would have thought of drizzling honey on fried chicken, but MAN! I am hooked! They have a fairly wide variety of choices on the kids menu, which is a plus for me. Â Chicken Parmigiana, steak-finger bites, honey mustard chicken salad, teriyaki chicken, and sirloin steak in kid-size portions are a fab addition to the standard burger, grilled cheese, etc. Â I like how the restaurant is set up, how you can adjoin booths. Â It's a pretty unique concept.
