We frequent the Oregon Coast several times a year, but had yet to find a "go to" restaurant in Newport...until today.
We all ordered different plates: BBQ Albacore Tuna, Clam Linguine, Scallops and Chips, and Rockfish. We loved everything. We shared the oysters on the half shell which were perfectly shucked, chilled, and delicious. But the show stealer, hands down, were their version of a hush puppy, the Sea Pups. These sweet corn pups with cheese and dungeness crab were absolutely amazing. I can honestly say we will never again visit Newport without stopping here.
With that said, I should note that while their food is stellar, their service is greatly lacking. Their young, grumpy, unprofessional waitress brought our experience down a bit. But as long as you go in knowing you're not getting great service, you won't be disappointed.
Don't think about it, just go.
We were visiting the coast and I had a craving for some fish and chips. We decided to try this place as we were touring the Historic Bayfront. Anyway, we ordered clam chowder, fish and chips (made with rockfish), and popcorn shrimp. The chowder  was well rounded and tasty and the seafood was fried nicely. An added bonus was the coleslaw that came with our meal. The coleslaw was lightly dressed in a vinaigrette which helped cut the richness of the deep fried food.
Review Source:Passing through Newport on a Thursday afternoon and happened on this place by chance.
Not being a big fan of most seafood, I always look for good fried shrimp and this is the place! The popcorn shrimp is excellent. The potatoes are equally great.
My wife had the whole Dungeness crab and  her comment was "woo hoo".
The service was good and the atmosphere is awesome if you like a real seafood dining experience.
Don't know when I will be back to the OR coast but when I do, I will definitely be back here to enjoy this place again.
We were not willing to wait for Local Ocean Seafood and we were told to skip Mo's. On a Saturday night we made it to OceanBleu at 7:30 pm. There was no wait. It is a small space not great for groups. It accommodate us well including our stroller and 5 year old.
I was particularly impressed by the clam chowder, ceviche and popcorn shrimp. It was expensive but delicious. I would go back.
First time here, but not the last one, for sure. We had the fried herbed oysters and the popcorn shrimp. Both dishes were very good, freshly made and cooked perfectly.
Dessert as good, too. Very good berry cobbler and creme brulee.
Service was kinda amateurish, Â but very friendly and reasonably fast.
WoW! Great fresh seafood! We showed up Friday night of the Newport Seafood and Wine festival and ordered a bottle of Reisling that was perfect then we all (4) of us ordered fish tacos. Now I am picky when it comes to fish tacos and I will admmit- next time I will tell them 1/2 the amount of aioli sauce and twice the amount of cilantro- but truly, it was scrumpshious-less than $10 and more than e could eat! Fabulous and great wait staff too!
Review Source:Both the signs on the door and the menus say Ocean Bleu @ Gino's -- and Yelp has an entry for both Ocean's Bleu, and for Gino's -- at the same address. Â So I guess I'll leave a copy of this at both entries.... Â Very confusing!
The food, however, is not confusing. Â In fact, it may be the best meal we've had in a month -- and it was purely by accident that we stopped there at all! Â I was planning on going home for lunch, but the timing for another appointment kept me in Newport -- I hadn't gone Yelping to find a good new place for us -- so we just sort of -- picked a spot blindly!
Husband ordered their popcorn shrimp w/ potatoes and slaw -- I ordered the house salad with clam chowder. Â Before our lunch arrived, the server brought us each a little 1/2 c sample of their clam chowder with oyster crackers -- always a good move to give little tastes -- and it was yummy. Â Maybe a tad thick for my prefs, but the flavor was spot on with lots of good bits in the creamy soup.
We'd just finished the samples, when the meal arrived -- and I don't mean to gush, but OH MY GOD! --
Husband actually cleaned his plate -- not a crumb left of either shrimp or potatoes -- and I think he would have eaten more if the plate had been bigger -- and this is a very tall, thin, picky eater who ALWAYS leaves at least 1/3 of what he's served, and sometimes more.... Â I took one nibble of his shrimp and half a potato to taste the seafood sauce -- and it really was the best popcorn shrimp I've ever tasted.... Â The potatoes were crisp rounds full of tender, fluffy potato on the inside -- absolutely amazing fresh and no starchy potato-ness. Â It almost made me regret ordering a salad!
Until I tasted my salad, that is. Â First it was beautiful. Â Some places, that's all you get -- but the flavors were amazing. Â House salad is mixed baby greens, carrot, egg, avocado, and pan-toasted almond slices. Â I got it with their house passion-fruit vinegrette -- and it was light and fresh and wonderful. Â A great mouthful of bright flavors. Â (see photo)
The soup/salad plate came with 2 slices of garlic toast -- each with a crust of fresh parm, toasted onto the top -- at least an ounce of cheese on each slice. Â It was warm and crunchy and a real delight!
In fact, the whole experience was a real delight, and such a pleasant surprise in the middle of an otherwise busy day!
*their menu says the owners of the cafe/fish market own their own fishing boat, and also buy fresh from other local boats -- and that's the fish on the menu! Â I love it!
I had the oysters & chips and my friend had the calamari and chips. I was given the choice of having my oysters grilled or deep fried and chose the grilled. They were crispy on the outside and juicy in the inside. Delicious ! The flavor of the calamari was fabulous. It was a blend of Oregon coast and Cajun. Â We both loved the coleslaw, which was more of a cabbage salad with a house vinaigrette that was light, with a flavor we couldn't quite put our fingers on, but very tasty. The plank fries were the perfect thickness so that they were crispy, with good body. They had a great flavor and were perfect for dipping. Â We haven't had customer service like this since the 1970's. We will definitely come here again!
Review Source:Had a nice, cozy time getting out of the rain and having dinner at Ocean Bleu. I'm crazy for just eating fresh seafood at the coast and not mucking it up too much with a lot of cooking or ingredients that would mask the flavor. I ordered three appetizers as a meal and it was the perfect amount of food to fill me up. Had half a dozen oysters on the half shell where they give you cocktail sauce and a separate cup of horseradish so you can mix your "heat" just right, along with fresh lemon wedges. The oysters were the small Yaquina bay ones and were excellent. Also ordered the crab cocktail, which was very fresh along with the steamed clams in a white wine, butter sauce. The clams were very small and hard to pierce with a fork but were tasty and the many crostini breads it came with were perfect for soaking up the liquid.
My husband had a special of grilled prawns in some sort of reduction that carmelized on the prawns and was delish.
Had great food, but it is a seafood market as well with the counter up front, so it's serving two purposes.
To use the typical parlance, "Wanna have the worst risotto you've ever eaten?" "Wanna be seated next to the smelly trash bins?" Â "Wanna have the worst 'garlic cheese bread' you've ever tasted?" Well you've come to the right place. Â I'm a local and had never eaten here so thought I should just try it out since I like to patronize businesses in town. Â At some point you just have to draw the line. Will never go back - and did I mention there really is only two 2-top tables (one of which is high traffic) inside the restaurant? Â For the price - go to Local Ocean which is MUCH better in all categories (ambiance, food, wait staff, etc.
Review Source:We ordered 3 things on the menu . Waited. About 40 mins  . When asked the waitress about our order, she says it takes longer because they cook their food fresh  and them walk away. First of all , I hope it is fresh and not some canned food. The the food is ok,Nothing too special . Also clam chowder is not the best in the coast. I give it 2 stars for the bad service.
Review Source:Wanna have perfectly done rockfish? This is the place to come. Wanna have great potato "chips" and not French fries? This is the place to come. Do HUGE Eastern scallops coated in a delicious lemon sauce make you smile with anticipation? Â Wanna have some great homemade cole slaw to go along with all this seafood? This is the place to come.
Sweet table service where your server smiles as she pours your glasses with liquid refreshment.
Ambience and location? Right on the historic Bay Front of Newport. It doesn't get much better than this for casual dining with an amazing menu of choice seafood.
We'll be back.
Granted it's located in a wonderful place, in the right part of town, how can it miss? Â It doesn't!
The Oregonian gave Ocean Bleu high raves, and we made the trip from Scappoose just to have lunch! That's about 3 hours to/from, people! So, it had better be good. Â We weren't disappointed. Â I chose not to do seafood (don't ask me why, I don't know, especially in Newport!), but my husband has the fish and chips...so, of course, I got several bites. Â The fish was incredible. Â Thin coating, perfectly cooked. Â And, the chips were to die for......
We'd come back, again and again. Â Even during tourist season.
It's a small fish market that serves food. A fun place with a tiny kitchen up front where you can watch them take the same seafood they would sell you fresh from the display case and cook it for you, wash the pans and do it for someone else. Nothing fancy or pretentious, just good food. The staff wasn't the friendliest we've experienced, and the service was pretty slow, but the ambiance and quirkiness of the experience along with the good food made this a 3-4 star dinner. Definitely would go back to try something else.
Review Source:Great spot on the waterfront. Â I went with the grilled cheese. Â It has their spectacular chipotle sauce. Â R had... something! AH! I wish I could remember. Â R was really excited about the sea pups. Â Traditional hush puppies, but with crab meat added. Â Very friendly staff.
The place is also a seafood market. Â All their seafood is sustainably harvested.
Here I sit in Beaverton packing to move to Newport and I am hungry. I cannot wait to get back and sample everything on the menu. So far I have only had the popcorn shrimp and was in heaven. The shrimp was fresh and succulent and coated in what in my opinion is the perfect batter. The potato rounds were sprinkled with sea salt and so tasty. The service was friendly and attentive and really welcoming. I am one of those that tends towards finding a usual item from the usual spot and just sticks with it but I am really ready to taste all they have to offer.
Review Source:This is a very good place on the waterfront to eat incredibly fresh and sustainably harvested seafood. It's very casual dining, but hey, you're on the coast and in a fish market no less.
My wife and I split a crab and it was quite tasty. Honestly though, we could've each eaten our own crab.
Definitely worth a visit.
Been here twice (both for lunch) and enjoyed the food a lot each time. I wanted something that was just yanked out of the water, and this place has that in spades.
First time in, my dining partner and I ordered a whole steamed Dungeness crab to split. Exquisite. The only problem is that the waitress kept giving us weird looks when we asked for this. It was on the menu, and I don't come to a restaurant to be judged on my food choices by the employees...anyway. She obviously wanted to be somewhere else, but she did her job. Other than that it was a fantastic experience.
The second time I came with my folks and the service was considerably better. My dad got the seafood stew and loved it. I got popcorn shrimp, they were the most adorable, delicious little pink shrimp and tasted totally unlike anything you will get inland. My mom got some landlubber sandwich or another and said it was good as well. The chips were extremely fatty and extremely delicious, so beware!
Overall, nice place despite hit-or-miss service, and a good variety of options, including some non-fried stuff.
OceanBleu made a few changes and I like it. I came here a while back and we had to place our order at the counter. I came back here not too long ago, now you will get to sit down first, and a server will come and take your order. I think this way is a better way than the old system.
I'm happy to say, they still serve really good food here. Jesse and I shared the $16 combo meal which has Halibut, Prawns, Oysters, and a Scallop. All of them are fried and serve with deep fried potatoes. I don't call these potatoes french fries because they slice  them. I love how they prepared these potatoes. It's literally seafood & chips.
We also shared a bowl of Clam Chowder. I love creamy soups and they know how to make a mean one. Service was excellent. Our server was nice, tentative, funny, and I've never had a better service at any other places along the Oregon Coast.
I'm looking forward to more trips to Newport. :).
Just o.k. for me. I had the rockfish and chips and the fish was fresh, but it and the chips were definitely greasy. I could see the shine of the oil, and was tasting the meal for hours afterwards. The clam chowder was kind of a gluey consistency and tasted of bacon, not clams. It's great housemade bacon, but I was looking for clam flavor. The oyster po' boy was the same story, a good bacon sandwich, and you could see the oysters but the bacon was the only flavor present. I liked the coleslaw, which was light and included apples and cilantro. Service was efficient, the facility is pretty clean. Will I go back? Nope. Local Ocean has way better fish and chips, and if I'm going to spend my fried-food calorie account, that's where I'll spend it.
Review Source:First time at this restaurant and we had a great experience. Good food and fun atmosphere, service was marginal. Went back the second night and we walked out. We were seated at a table and waited 20 minutes and no one waited on us. They all looked at us and went by us, even sang happy birthday to the table next to ours. You would have thought 3 closed menu's on the table would have been enough.
Review Source:A solid offering in the SW Bay/Harbor Area of Newport. This restaurant also has a fish shop in it. The food is well done and the fish is fresh.
Some highlights: Â The popcorn shrimp is really good, the clam chowder also solid. It's heavy on the smokey bacon notes but still really good. Â The evening we were there they had sturgeon on the menu and it also was extremely good. Â Halibut fish and chips were tasty as well. Â Best not sway off the sea food offerings though, if you are here, you are here for the fish. My son decided to go with some pasta because he was a little fished out this week and he wished he had just taken the plunge and gotten the popcorn shrimp.
Ambiance is super casual, staff very friendly and service solid. Â An excellent option for dinner.
Enjoyed my crab melt and clam chowder, but here is the problem. Â That weekend, we went to Aprils and Saffron Salmon for dinners and had fantastic seafood. Â Compared to that, OceanBleu was just ok. Â Otherwise i probably would have rated them higher, but knowing they can do so much better, i only gave them 3 stars
Review Source:AMAZING Food, service and quality. We stopped in after our drive to Newport from Eugene, and arrived hungry. We had Yelp up on the phone to make sure we ate at a place with good reviews. We had walked by a few places that had great reviews and wondered if we would be missing out if we stopped here. We stopped in front of Ocean Bleu @ Gino's and I quickly looked them up. I was super happy to see almost 5 stars and in we went.
Upon arriving we were greeted by a very friendly staff that quickly sat us and sent our server over for drinks.
I ordered the Rockfish Tacos, and a cup of chowder. My Husband also ordered the chowder as well as Fish and Chips. My 5 YO ordered her usual Grilled Cheese.
We waited for our soup to show and it came in a soup mug (aka cup, super cute), with a package of Oyster Crackers. We were pleasantly surprised upon our first taste of the Clam Chowder. It was awesome. Â
When all of our meals arrived I was more than surprised at the beautiful presentation. My Fish tacos were beautiful and along with them was a plate of gorgeous grilled veggies & brown rice pilaf. On top of that it was decorated with gorgeous Blueberries and Cherries! What a nice touch!
My Daughters Grilled Cheese came on wheat, which was also a very welcome surprise. We all had the lovely presentation of the berries and cherries to our plates, and my 5YO was in LOVE because she is a blueberry fanatic. :)
I cannot explain how fantastic my Tacos were. The Chipotle Aoli was to die for and the grilled Rockfish, superb. I only ended up eating the insides of the Taco after the first couple of bites, as they started to fall apart, but that was fine by me!
My Daughter LOVED her Grilled Cheese and my Husbands only complaint was that he felt like they didn't give him enough fish. (It was a bit on the skimpy side...) But he loved the Fish! The fries are AMAZING. I stole a couple of bites to try them and we all loved them as well.
The Iced Tea was awesome, and everything about our experience here was amazing.
We will be back, again, and again. Please keep up the good work, guys! Never close! :) We love Ocean Bleu!!
The service was prompt and friendly. Â All of our food was delicious. Â Our party consisted of 6 (2 kids, 4 adults) Â We ordered the rockfish and chips, popcorn shrimp and chips, blackened salmon sandwich and both kids had the mini burgers. Â Everything was fresh, hot and not greasy at all. Â We will definitely be back!!
Review Source:I have lived in Oregon for over ten years and was proud to show my extended family (from Texas, Chicago, and Boston) around the amazing Oregon coast. Â Our lovely experience in Seal Rock and Newport came to a halt when we entered this restaurant. I considered taking my family to the obvious choice: Mo's Restaurant, but I thought a different pick would diversify our dining experiences. Â BIG MISTAKE. Â We walked in to the restaurant and were treated rudely by the three hostesses (or waitresses). Â We were a 12-person party, and explicitly stated that we were open to splitting up. Â There was a 6-top table clearly and completely open and they told us that it would take 25 minutes to seat us, even after I stated 3 times (once to each hostess) that we could be split up. Â So, we said okay and proceeded to begin our wait. Â We were rudely informed that we could not stand in the entrance and not allowed to wait inside the restaurant. Â We were given a barking order to leave the restaurant and wait "outside, in the parking lot." Â We were told that we could sit on the bench in the parking lot. Twelve people for one bench. Â The hostess's rude tone of voice was noticed by nearly every customer in the restaurant who stared at us as we walked outside. Â Needless to say, we felt humiliated, shunned, and discriminated against. Â
The one-star rating is simply b/c I can't speak about the actual food except to say that it did look good. Â It's too bad we did not have the warm and friendly invitation to make us feel good about waiting to try it out. Â And, too bad for them that they did not give us the chance to give them the $300+ business we took to Mo's.
If ever I return to Newport, I will stay true to Mo's.
We've been here twice, it's always our go-to spot when we are in newport.
We've had the chowder, oyster po-boy (with extra delicious red sauce), the prawn&scallop skewers, fries, half dungeness crab, and the fish&chips.
The oyster po-boy may be the best thing we've had here, or in Newport for that matter. The red sauce is delicious, the oysters are cooked perfectly with an amazing batter- well seasoned.
The shrimp & scallops were also perfectly cooked. The fries are big yukon gold? potatoes.
Chowder is pretty good. Not the best, but pretty darn tasty- worth getting again.
Service is awesome.
Outdoor seating in a covered partially enclosed patio is really nice, even with a bit of wind it is sheltered.
I would like to try the crab cakes and some more items.
It's got a good vibe, local- small- locally owned, fish seafood counter and they fish for themselves or buy locally. Very fresh.
A guy was out cracking crabs and brought us each a leg straight from the cooker, just to snack on. Really friendly. Delicious crab too.
Will return a third time!
Live Free, Love Often, Eat Wild.
I'm totally on board with their motto and Ocean Bleu is one of the best dining experiences my family has had this year.
Ocean Bleu @ Gino's just opened in the summer of 2010 and it will be a place we visit on every trip to Newport. It is one part fish market and one part seafood restaurant. It is run by a young couple, Mike and Vanessa, with a great sense of fun and energy.
The location is cute as a button in a casual, yet vibrant way and the food was excellent. It is one of those rare occasions where I can't even provide any critical feedback because it was all so good. I talked to a local shop owner who has them cater events and she couldn't stop raving about them either.
The only downside is that the restaurant isn't on the water. It is across the street in the Bayfront historic district, so you will sacrifice a water view. Every item we ordered was excellent with a special rave reserved for the fish tacos. The slaw, the tortillas, the fish, the brown rice, the sauce -- everything was just right.
I ordered the seafood slider sampler and they told me it is about to be discontinued. Really sad, because I loved having a little of this and a little of that (shrimp, tuna and crab) on my plate. Great kids' menu with the highlight being Gino's fries. Scallop cuts of potatoes that are just so much better than your average fry. The large strawberry lemonade has chunks of strawberries and come with one refill.
Prices were reasonable and the service was so sweet it made my boys blush. Nice selection of beer and Mr. K is now all about Rogue's Dead Guy ale which is brewed just across the water. We had a number of wonderful meals in the area, but this one was a hit across the board.
If you can't visit in person, you can also have their fish shipped to you: <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oceanbleuseafoods.com%2Fshop.php&s=88fb357739bb0175080a602868113ac8354f1348aeb5a37b6c2d19936c2ebcea" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.oceanbleuseaf…</a>
